Book SynopsisDuring the Great War eight battalions of the regiment went on active service and another seven (including 1st Garrison Battalion) served at home. No less than 32,000 men passed through the ranks of the regiment of whom some 6,000 died; forty-eight battle honours were awarded and one VC. Appendices contain separate rolls of honour of officers and other ranks with names grouped alphabetically by ranks; all ranks list of honours and awards and foreign awards, and separate lists of Mention in Despatches. The 1st, 6th, 7th and 8th Battalions served on the Western Front, the 2nd Battalion in Macedonia with 28th Division following ten months in France and Belgium, the 1/4th in India and Aden, 1/5th in India and Mesopotamia and finally the 10th Battalion (formed in Egypt in Feb 1917 from two converted Kent yeomanry regiments) fought in Palestine and on the Western Front with 74th (Yeomanry) Division.Apart from one chapter describing the raising of wartime battalions and the initial disposition of the two TF battalions, and one on their affiliated regiment, the Queen''s Own Rifles of Canada, the chapters of this history each cover well-defined periods of the war in the various theatres in which the parts played by all battalions involved are recorded. The groundwork or skeleton is based on battalion, brigade or divisional war diaries, fleshed out by personal narratives and diaries provided by men who had fought and survived. Where possible, the names of the officers who became casualties in any action are given in the text after the record of the battle, but only the number in the case of other ranks. Again, wherever possible the recipients of honours (all ranks) have been named in the account as news of their decorations reached their battalion. A good history.

Book SynopsisA colourful and exciting unit history of the King''s Royal Rifle Corps which originated in Britain''s wars in the Americas during the 18th and 19th centuries under the first of its great battalion commanders, Henri Bouquet. In this first of five volumes, the unit is continually in action in America, Canada and the Caribbean. In the Seven Years'' War with France (1756-1763) its battle honours included Fort William Henry; the siege of Louisbourg; Ticonderoga; and the capture of Forts Frontenac and Duquesne. The unit fought under General James Wolfe on the Heights of Abraham to take Quebec, and its commander, Jeffrey, Lord Amherst, wrested Montreal from the French. Its final action in the war was the capture of the Caribbean island of Martinique. The Corps helped put down the revolt of the famous Ottawa Algonquin Indian chief Pontiac in 1763-64; defeating him at the battle of Bushy Run and lifting the siege of Fort Pitt. In the American War of Indpendence (1775-1783) the unit took part in the brilliant action at Briar Creek and successfully defended Savannah, but failed to hold St Vincent and west Florida. Run down after Britain''s loss of the United States, it was resurrected and expanded during the French Revoutionary wars, capturing Tobago and Martinique (again!) as well as St Lucia, and brieflty held Guadeloupe. In the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812 with the US, the unit again saw action, capturing Martinique for a third time and fighting in and against Spain. With nine appendices, 12 illustrations and 7 maps.

Book SynopsisA concise, beautifully-illustrated history of one of the British army''s most celebrated Irish regiments from its origins in 1688 after the ''Glorious Revolution'' to 1876. A proudly Protestant unit, the regiment was first raised to defend the town of Enniskillen against Catholic forces loyal to James II. Taking part in the Battle of the Boyne and the Siege of Derry, the regiment became part of William III''s Anglo-Dutch army fighting the French at the siege of Namur. It fought the Jacobite rebels at the battles of Falkirk and Culloden in 1745-6; and then saw service in the Seven Years War with France in the Americas and the Caribbean. After a 2nd and 3rd battalion was added to its strength, the Regiment saw service in Egypt and fought through the Peninsula War, taking part in the battles of Corunna, Busaco, and Olivenca, and the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz. After entering Madrid, it fought under Wellington at the battles of Salamanca and Vitoria, stormed St Sebastian, and crossed the Pyrenees to take part in the battles of Orthes and Toulouse. The Regiment also fought at Waterloo. The Inniskillings defended Peshawar during the Indian Mutiny. Contains an Appendix, Roll of Colonels, Roll of Present Officers etc., and seven illustrations.

Naval & Military Press Ltd Memoirs of the Tenth Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales' Own)

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a very full history of one of the British Army''s elite cavalry regiments over two centuries, written by a former CO of the regiment just before the cavalry galloped out of the annals of war, pursued by the 20th century''s mechanisation of conflict. The 10th Royal Hussars were raised early in the 18th century, and saw their first action at the Battles of Falkirk and Culloden in putting down the 1745-46 Jacobite rebellion. In the Seven Years'' War with France, the 10th fought at the Battles of Minden, Warburg, Campen and Grebenstein. In the reign of George IIi the 10th became particularly fashionable, and George IV, when Prince of Wales, though a very non-military monarch, became its commander. (One of George''s favourites, the arbiter of fashion Beau Brummel, was briefly an officer of the regiment, though his career came to an inglorious end when he was thrown by his horse while parading at Brighton). In the Napoleonic Wars, the 10th faced the Emperor himself in Portugal, before taking part in the Corunna campaign under Sir John Moore. Returning to Iberia, the regiment fought in the battle of Vittoria under the Duke of Wellingortn, pursued the enemy into France, and took part in the battles of Orthez and Toulouse. In the battle of Waterloo, the 10th took a full part, charging the French Imperial Guard at the height of the battle. The 10th saw garrison duty in India before the outbreak fo the Crimean War in which it saw service during the siege of Sebastipol. The 10th Hussars took part in the Afghan Wars and the Suakim War in the Sudan, in which it saw action at the battle of El Teb. This history has many splendid illustrations, several in colour, and is accompanied by appendices listing the officers of the regiment and the sporting achievements of the 10th Hussars. This is a lively and colourful account of a British cavalry regiment at the height of its pomp

Naval & Military Press Ltd Second Twentieth: Being the History of the 2/20th Battalion London Regiment in England, France, Salonica, Egypt, Palestine, Germany

Book SynopsisThe 2/20th Battalion was formed on 3 September 1914 and was allocated to 180th Brigade of the 60th (2/2nd London) Division with which it served till May 1918. The division went to France in June 1916 and served five months on the Western Front before being transferred to Salonika until June 1917 when it was again moved, this time to Palestine with the EEF. In May 1918 the battalion left the 60th Division in Palestine and returned to France, where it was attached briefly (three weeks) to 66th Division before being transferred to 185th Brigade, 62nd (2/West Riding) Division with which it saw out the war and with which it marched into Germany, the only Territorial division to be part of the Occupation Force. The 2/20th Bn''s war service in three different theatres makes this a specially interesting history, culminating as it does with the occupation of the Rhineland. This is an example of an excellent battalion history, intended primarily as a souvenir, an aid to memory for all who served in the battalion, a battalion fortunate enough to keep the same CO throughout the whole of its active service from arrival in France to demob in July 1919. The author has provided a comprehensive account of the battalion''s experiences, full of incident and one in which, bearing in mind his primary consideration, he has named many officers, NCOs and men as the story unfolds, an aspect most welcome to family historians, genealogists and medallists. There is a Roll of Honour for each theatre with names of the dead listed chronologically in each, regardless of rank. Total casualties amounted to 49 officers and 1313 other ranks of whom 18 and 331 were dead. Only six members of the battalion were taken prisoner. Appendices give the list of Honours and Awards; the nominal roll of officers who embarked with the battalion in June 1916 and what became of them; the nominal roll of WOs and sergeants who embarked in June 1916 including those started out at a lower rank but subsequently became sergeants - and what became of them; a list of the officers who joined the battalion overseas with date of joining and leaving (if they did) and why they left; and a similar list for WOs and sergeants. A final appendix describes the presentation of a King''s Colour to the battalion by HRH Prince Albert (later George VI) in April 1920, arranged to coincide with the unveiling of the war memorial. Highly recommended.

  • History of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, 1678-1918

Naval & Military Press Ltd History of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, 1678-1918

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFor the first ten years of its existence the regiment was on the Scottish establishment, but with the abdication of James II and the arrival of William (and Mary) the RSF came over to the English establishment as a Fusilier regiment (it had been equipped with ''fusils'' instead of matchlocks), first known as The Scots Fusiliers Regiment of Foot, changed around 1713 to The Royal North British Fusiliers and when, in 1751, the regiments of the line were numbered it became the 21st (Royal North British) Fusiliers Regiment of Foot. This was its title till 1877 when it became the 21st (Royal Scots Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot, and finally, in 1881, The Royal Scots Fusiliers. Most regimental histories cover the 1914-18 War in one or more separate volumes, but here that conflict takes up the final third or so of the book in which Buchan devotes one chapter to each year of the war and, at the end of the chapter, lists in alphabetical order the names of the officers who died in that year, with date but not place (theatre) of death. As there were nine battalions (1, 2, 1/4, 1/5, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12) which between them served on the Western Front, in Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine and Macedonia, this doesn''t leave too much room for detail. But this lack is redressed by some fine, descriptive writing which provides the reader with a clear picture of the regiment''s part in that war. Four VCs were won and the dead numbered 5,600. It is the same with the pre-1914 history which makes for easy and absorbing reading. In its early days the regiment fought against the Jacobite uprisings of 1715 and 1745, and was in the centre of Cumberland''s first line at Culloden which put an end to the Highland rebellion. In the American War of Independence the regiment was part of Burgoyne''s force compelled to surrender at Saratoga. In 1814 the regiment led the way in the capture of Washington. It fought at the Alma and Inkerman in the Crimea, at Ulundi in the Zulu War and in the S African War won its first VC at Colenso. In an appendix all the Colonels of the regiment are listed and the COs of all the battalions.

    15 in stock

Book Synopsis'German militarism' has long been understood to be a central element of German society. Considering the role of militarism, this book investigates how conscription has contributed to instilling a strong sense of military commitment amongst the German public.A Nation in Barracks tells the story of how military-civil relations have evolved in Germany during the last two hundred years. Focusing on the introduction and development of military conscription, the author looks at its relationship to state citizenship, nation building, gender formation and the concept of violence. She begins with the early nineteenth century, when conscription was first used in Prussia and initially met with harsh criticism from all aspects of society, and continues through to the two Germanies of the post-1949 period. The book covers the Prussian model used during World War I, the Weimar Republic when no conscription was enforced and the mass military mobilization of the Third Reich.Throughout this comprehensive account, acclaimed historian Ute Frevert examines how civil society deals with institutionalized violence and how this affects models of citizenship and gender relations.Trade Review'Ute Frevert's characteristically sweeping and incisive history of military conscription in Germany makes an original and stimulating contribution to our understanding of the problem of militarism in German society in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In this book Ute Frevert confirms her reputation as one of the most original and wide-ranging historians writing on the last two centuries of Germany's troubled past.' Professor Richard J. Evans, Professor of Modern History, Cambridge University'A gripping account of the meaning and impact of conscription in Germany from the nineteenth century to the present. Book SynopsisIn Warriors for a Living, Idan Sherer examines the experience of the Spanish infantry during the formative period of the Italian Wars. Decades of clashes between Spain and France transformed Italy into a crucible of military tactics and technology and brought about the emergence of the Spanish infantry tercios as Europe’s finest military force for more than a century. From their recruitment, through the complexities of everyday life in the army and culminating in the potential brutality of soldiering, the book offers a fresh and much needed exploration, analysis and, at times, reconsideration of what it meant to be a professional soldier in early modern Europe.Trade Review''Sherers Zugang macht die individuelle Erfahrungder Professionalisierung von Söldnerheeren historisierbar und rückt sie damit auch in den Kontext der Phänomenologie gegenwärtiger Tendenzen der Kriegführung [...] Idan Sherer gelingt eine ansprechende Mischung aus Überblicksdarstellungund reflektierter Thesendiskussion'' - Heinrich Lang, in: Zeitschrift für Historische Forschung 46 (2019)2Table of ContentsContents List of Maps, Charts, Tables and Figures ix Abbreviations x Acknowledgments xiii Introduction 1 1 The Infantry Soldiers of the Spanish Army 15 Who Were the Soldiers? 15 The Process of Recruitment 26 2 Conditions of Service: Everyday Life in the Spanish Army 38 Warriors for a Living 38 The Burden of Campaigns 48 Exposure to the Elements 49 Nutrition and Basic Supplies 52 Journey by Land 59 Journey by Sea 65 Disease 68 Friction with the Local Population 78 The Comforts of Soldiering 92 3 Mutiny 102 The Professional, Financial, and Disciplinary Context of the Mutinies 105 The General Characteristics of the Spanish Mutinies 112 The Commencing Stages 112 The Extent of the Mutinies 117 The Organization of the Mutiny 121 The Process of Negotiations 124 Violent Actions of the Mutineers 132 Retaliation, Punishment, and status quo 136 4 The Experience of the Sack 144 Preparing for the Sack 145 During and Immediately after the Assault 154 Organizing the Violence 160 Soldiers and Civilians—The Fate of the Prisoners 166 Leaving the City—The Effects of the Sacks 170 5 Combat 175 The Military Revolution and Combat in the Italian Wars 178 The “Military Revolution” of the Sixteenth Century 178 The Experience of the Military Revolution 192 Skirmishes and Special Operations 193 Siege warfare: besiegers and Besieged 201 Siege Warfare: The Assault 210 Battle 218 The Aftermath of Combat 230 A “Military Revolution”? 235 Motivation and Combat Effectiveness of the Spanish Infantry 236 A Warrior Society 239 Esprit de corps 244 On the Battlefield 250 Conclusion 256 Bibliography 263 Index 281

Book SynopsisHow does growing up in a military family affect the educational experiences of children and youth? What can K-12 school practitioners do to support these students' academic, behavioral, and socialâemotional success? This book describes effective ways to help students and their families navigate such challenges as relocation, school transitions, and parental deployment. Pamela Fenning presents strengths-based assessment, intervention, and prevention strategies that reflect deep knowledge of military culture and fit perfectly within a schoolwide multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). In a convenient large-size format, the book includes a reproducible data collection form that can be downloaded and printed for repeated use. This book is in The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools Series, edited by Sandra M. Chafouleas.Trade Review"Fenning provides school psychologists and counselors with information and resources to support military children in the academic, mental health, and social arenas. She gets down to the brass tacks about the hurdles that these youth and their families often face. Implementation of MTSS with military students is explained, as are legal issues that affect military children in public schools. All chapters feature case studies that bring the information to life for the school psychologist and counselor. This book is a 'must have' for Case Study Committees or IEP teams tackling how best to meet the needs of military students in a school."-- Mark C. Pisano, EdD, NCSP, school psychologist, Fort Bragg Schools, Department of Defense Education Activity; Coordinator, Military Families Interest Group, National Association of School Psychologists "Military-connected youth and families are among the least understood and most underserved populations in schools, making this book essential reading. Administrators, teachers, and school-based mental health professionals will benefit from the practical knowledge and resources provided to meet military students' developmental, academic, and social–emotional needs. A strengths-based MTSS approach that builds on the individual’s resiliency serves as the foundation. The unique stressors of deployment, multiple moves, and grief and loss are addressed, as are considerations for students with special needs. The content is relevant to the full range of military families, both active duty and reserve. As someone with direct experience working with Department of Defense schools, I believe this book fills a tremendous gap."--Melissa A. Louvar Reeves, PhD, NCSP, LCMHC, School Psychology Program, Winthrop University; past president, National Association of School Psychologists "This user-friendly, practical book is an essential guide for understanding the unique strengths and challenges of military children and families. Case studies are used to illustrate how various evidence-based programs and practices can be integrated within a multi-tiered model of service delivery. It is very likely that students in any given school, regardless of proximity to a military installation, have family members serving in the military. School psychologists play a critical role in supporting the strengths and resiliency of these students. The book synthesizes research findings and includes insightful examples, as well as links to a wealth of resources, to help practitioners provide appropriate support."--Abigail Harris, PhD, NCSP, School Psychology Program, Fordham University-This is a solid resource for school psychologists to better understand the needs and available support for students of military families whether at DOD or private/civilian schools. The information is concise and focused with abundant references directing readers to additional resources.--Doody's Review Service, 02/04/2022ƒƒEarly in my career, I was assigned an elementary and a high school serving large numbers of students from both a Navy and an Air Force base. I wish I had this text as a resource, to be more aware of and effective in serving this unique population.--NASP Communiqué, 11/01/2022Table of Contents1. • Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery: Where

Bloomsbury Publishing USA Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery: Where

Book SynopsisGifted writer and reporter Robert Poole opens Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery with preparations for Memorial Day when thousands of families come to visit those buried in the 624-acre cemetery, legions of Rolling Thunder motorcyclists patrol the streets with fluttering POW flags, and service members place miniature flags before each of Arlington''s graves. Section 60, where many of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan have been laid to rest alongside service members from earlier wars, is a fourteen-acre plot that looms far larger in the minds and hearts of Americans. It represents a living, breathing community of fellow members of the military, family members, friends, and loved ones of those who have fallen to the new weapons of war: improvised explosive devices, suicide bombs, and enemies who blend in with local populations. Several of the newest recruits for Section 60 have been brought there by suicide or post-traumatic stress disorder, a war injury newly described but dating to ancient times. Using this section as a window into the latest wars, Poole recounts stories of courage and sacrifice by fallen heroes, and explores the ways in which soldiers' comrades, friends, and families honor and remember those lost to war--carrying on with life in the aftermath of tragedy. Section 60 is a moving tribute to those who have fought and died for our country, and to those who love them.

Book SynopsisBy the end of World War I, 45,000 Australians had died on the Western Front. Some bodies had been hastily buried mid-battle in massed graves; others were mutilated beyond recognition. Often men were simply listed as 'Missing in Action' because nobody knew for sure.Lieutenant Robert Burns was one of the missing, and now that the guns had fallen silent his father wanted to know what had become of his son. He wasn't the only one looking for answers. A loud clamour arose from Australia for information and the need for the dead to be buried respectfully. Many of the Australians charged with the grisly task of finding and reburying the dead were deeply flawed. Each had his own reasons for preferring to remain in France instead of returning home. In the end there was a great scandal, with allegations of 'body hoaxing' and gross misappropriation of money and army possessions leading to two highly secretive inquiries. Untold until now, Missing in Action is the compelling and unexpected story of those dark days and darker deeds and a father's desperate search for his son's remains.
