Nova Science Publishers Inc The Southwest Border: Apprehensions, Military
Book SynopsisThe Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) processes to identify, collect, document, and share information about family members apprehended at the southwest border are fragmented. DHS's U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) apprehends family members and determines how information about each individual -- and his or her relationship to other family members -- will be collected and documented. Other DHS components, such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), use information collected at the time of apprehension to inform how those who are members of a family, including children, will proceed through immigration proceedings. Family members apprehended at the border and placed into expedited removal that indicate an intention to apply for asylum, or a fear of persecution or torture or fear of return to their home country, are referred to DHS's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for a credible fear screening. This book discusses key issues related to our southwest border.Table of ContentsPreface; Southwest Border: Actions Needed to Address Fragmentation in DHSs Processes for Apprehended Family Members; Southwest Border: Actions Needed to Improve DHS Processing of Families and Coordination between DHS and HHS; Military Funding for Southwest Border Barriers; Boots at the Border: Examining the National Guard Deployment to the Southwest Border; National Drug Control Strategy: Southwest Border Counternarcotics Strategy 2020 (Office of National Drug Control Policy); Index.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Asia's Security Challenges
Book SynopsisThe Asia-Pacific Region has changed from a region of permanent crisis to a major economic growth area of the world. This is mainly based on the stability of the region despite some conflict potentials. Consequently the influence of new challenges for national security is of great importance for the analysis of the future developments of this region. Security is one of the crucial needs for the individual as well as the nation or state. A comprehensive security approach is recognised by most of the Asian nation states, but most of the regional organisations in Asia are lacking it. Nevertheless, the coming era of globalisation, increasing interdependence, closer communication networks, and a growing ecology factor will show the need for closer co-operation and more regionalisation in order to fulfil the requirements of the nation state towards its inhabitants. The chapters contained in this volume provide an invaluable guide to a modified security approach in Asia, which can be the first step of building a common Asian security thinking. The covering of major security challenges as well as the regional security panoramas and the selected country profiles provide a crucial overview concerning this complex problem.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Russia on the Brink of the Millennium:
Book SynopsisTransition from one millennium to another is not just a calendar date, but rather a complex historical process of qualitative changes in the development of human civilisation. Such understanding of history is especially important when one would like to assess the ''double step'' (a new century and a new millennium) being made at the advent of a new era. Together with the geopolitical regrouping, principal qualitative shifts are taking place on the international scene. They are already evident in the territories of some of the former republics of the Soviet Union which have been replaced by the Commonwealth Independent States (CIS). The goal of this book is to contribute to a more profound study of the global changes in the area of both international and national security which have been well underway in the world community in a whole and the CIS in particular, started by the dissolution of the former Soviet Union and accelerated by the subsequent political, economic and social reforms in the CIS countries.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Security in Iraq
Book SynopsisThe United States is relying heavily on private firms to supply a wide variety of services in Iraq, including security. Based on the information available in published sources, this is the first time that the United States has depended on contractors to provide such extensive security in a hostile environment, although it has previously contracted for more limited security services in Afghanistan, Bosnia, and elsewhere. This book summarises what is currently known publically about companies that provide personnel for security missions in Iraq and some sources of controversy surrounding them. A treatment of legal status and authorities follows, including an overview of relevant international law as well as Iraqi law, which currently consists primarily of Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) orders that remain in effect until superseded. The various possible means for prosecuting contractors under U.S. law in civilian or military courts are also detailed, followed by a discussion of possible issues for Congress. This is an edited, excerpted and augmented edition of various government publications.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Ocean Piracy
Book SynopsisThis book explores the increase in pirate attacks off the Horn of Africa which is directly linked to continuing insecurity and the absence of the rule of law in war-torn Somalia. The absence of a functioning government in Somalia remains the single greatest challenge to regional security and provides freedom of action for those engaged in piracy along the Somali coast. Some observers also have alleged that the absence of coastal security authorities in Somalia has allowed illegal international fishing and maritime dumping to occur in Somali waters, which in turn has undermined the economic prospects of some Somalis and may be providing economic or political motivation to some groups engaged in piracy. The apparent motive of many active Somali pirate groups is profit, and piracy has proven to be a lucrative activity for many thus far. Beginning in January 2009, the Obama Administration signalled its intention to continue working with U.S. partners in the Contact Group on Somalia and the Contract Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia. Enhanced diplomatic engagement with Somali Transitional Federal Governmental officials and leaders from the semi-autonomous region of Puntland also will be launched with the aim of encouraging local Somalis to take steps to secure regions where pirates currently enjoy safe havens. Nova Science Publishers Inc Counterinsurgency & the Armed Forces
Book SynopsisCounterinsurgency is now the greatest challenge facing the armed forces of the US and NATO countries today. Although that challenge is faced daily in Afghanistan and Iraq, the assault is also on the liberal democratic institutions of all these countries. this book will fill a crucial gap in explaining how insurgents think, and how this is different from how the armed forces think. Given these differences, this book answers questions not only about how armed forces should design their counterinsurgency operations, but also about how governments should design programs to prevent the development of insurgent populations. This book includes a chapter exploring the type of thinking that insurgents use, and several case studies that can be used to train the military and civilian policy professional. Underdog strategy is the ancient ''way of thinking of women and the vanquished,'' the form of strategy which was excluded by Aristotle from philosophical discourse, but did not disappear from practice.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Border Security & Who is Responsible for it
Book SynopsisThis book explores U.S. border security and the role of the key agencies and their missions. The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) has a long and storied history as our nation''s first line of defence against unauthorised migration. Today, the USBP''s primary mission is to detect and prevent the entry of terrorists, weapons of mass destruction, and illegal aliens into the country, and to interdict drug smugglers and other criminals along the border. In the wake of the tragedy of September 11th 2001, the U.S. Congress decided that enhancing the security of the U.S. borders was a vitally important component of preventing future terrorist attacks. After the massive reorganisation of federal agencies precipitated by the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there are now four main federal agencies charged with securing the U.S. borders: the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Bureau of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This book serves as a primer on the key federal agencies charged with border security and describing each agency''s role. Book SynopsisThis book is an overview of the assessment of the reserve component of the U.S. military and its recommended changes to ensure that the National Guard and other reserve components are organised, trained, equipped, compensated and supported to best meet the needs of U.S. national security. The Commission on the National Guard and Reserves was established by the Ronald Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005. Through its enabling statute, Congress tasked this Commission to report on the roles and missions of the reserve components, on how their capabilities may be best used to achieve national security objectives, including homeland defence, on their compensation and benefits and on the effects of possible changes in these areas on military careers, readiness, recruitment, and retention, on traditional and alternative career paths, on their policies and funding for training and readiness, including medical and personal readiness, on the adequacy of funding for their equipment and personnel and on their organisation, structure, and overall funding. Congress has asked this Commission to provide it a road map to a strong, capable, sustainable reserve component. Nova Science Publishers Inc U.S. Counterinsurgency Guide & Tactics
Book SynopsisThis book examines American counterinsurgency practices and tactics. At its heart, a counterinsurgency is an armed struggle for the support of the population. This support can be achieved or lost through information engagement, strong representative government, access to goods and services, fear, or violence. This armed struggle also involves eliminating insurgents who threaten the safety and security of the population. However, military units alone cannot defeat an insurgency. Most of the work involves discovering and solving the population''s underlying issues, that is, the root causes of their dissatisfaction with the current arrangement of political power.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Science of Cybersecurity & a Roadmap to Research
Book SynopsisInformation technology has become pervasive in every way, from our phones and other small devices to our enterprise networks to the infrastructure that runs our economy. As the critical infrastructures of the United States have become more and more dependent on public and private networks, the potential for widespread national impact resulting from disruption or failure of these networks has also increased. Securing the nation''s critical infrastructures requires protecting not only their physical systems but, just as important, the cyber portions of the systems on which they rely. This book examines the cybersecurity research roadmap in order to define a national R&D agenda that is required to enable us to get ahead of our adversaries and produce the technologies that will protect our information systems and networks into the future.

The Department of Defense endorses the Navy''s desire to establish a second Atlantic Fleet CVN home port in Mayport, Florida, to be ready by 2019. Transferring a CVN from Norfolk to Mayport would shift the local economic activity associated with homeporting a CVN, which some sources estimate as being worth hundreds of millions of dollars per year. This book explores the issues for Congress as to whether to approve, reject or modify DOD''s proposal to transfer a CVN to Mayport. Congress''s decision on the issue could affect Navy capabilities and funding requirements, and the local economies of Mayport and Norfolk.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Security Force Assistance in the Development of
Book SynopsisHistorically, the U.S. military''s Special Operations Forces (SOF) have had primary responsibility for training, advising and assisting foreign military forces. Today, although this mission has not been completely relegated to conventional forces, the National Security Strategies of the current and previous administrations direct the U.S. military services to organise, train and equip themselves to carry out these activities on a larger scale with conventional (non-SOF) forces. This responsibility in its broad sense of building the capacity of partner states has been termed "security force assistance" (SFA). This book presents the distillation of best practices and lessons learned from the contemporary operating environment in Iraq and Afghanistan with regard to security force assistance, and offers recommendations that build upon recent initiatives within the Department of Defense (DoD) to create a comprehensive approach to improve U.S. SFA.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Improving Adaptability of U.S. Military Forces
Book SynopsisThis book provides important recommendations for how the Department of Defense can better face the rapidly changing security environment of the 21st century by increasing its adaptability. The study used business and government case studies to derive its definition of adaptability which identified the key elements as the ability and willingness to anticipate the need for change, to prepare for that change, and to implement changes in a timely and effective manner in response to the surrounding environment. Strategies were identified to promote the elements of adaptability in the Department of Defense (DoD), with an ultimate goal of improving mission effectiveness, including aligning enterprise functions to support mission outcomes; reduce uncertainty through better global awareness; prepare for degraded operations; enhance the adaptability of the workforce and changing the culture.

Book SynopsisIn the early 1990s, Georgia and its breakaway South Ossetia region had agreed to a Russian-mediated ceasefire that provided for Russian "peacekeepers" to be stationed in the region. Moscow extended citizenship and passports to most ethnic Ossetians. Simmering long-time tensions escalated on the evening of August 7, 2008, when South Ossetia and Georgia accused each other of launching intense artillery barrages against each other. Georgia claims that South Ossetian forces did not respond to a ceasefire appeal but intensified their shelling, "forcing" Georgia to send in troops. This book provides a post-conflict assessment of the Russian-Georgian conflict of August 2008, with a focus on the implications for U.S. interests and the organisational change in the Russian airborne forces.

Nova Science Publishers Inc 21st Century Defense Strategy Guidance & Defense
Book SynopsisOn 5 January 2012, President Obama announced a new defence strategic guidance entitled "Sustaining U.S. Global Leadership: Priorities for 21st Century Defense". This new guidance is significant because it is explicitly intended to reshape future Department of Defense (DOD) priorities, activities, and budget requests for the next decade. While the guidance is intended to steer DOD decision-making as it reduces defence spending by about $487 billion over the next 10 years, to meet the initial budget caps set in the Budget Control Act (BCA) of 2011, it does not account for the possibility of sequestration, further significant, across-the-board cuts that could be required pursuant to implementation of the BCA. This book highlights and analyses key strategic-level issues raised by the new guidance.

Nova Science Publishers Inc U.S. Defense Build-up on Guam
Book SynopsisSince 2000, the U.S. military has been building up forward-deployed forces on the westernmost U.S. territory of Guam to increase U.S. presence, deterrence, and power projection for potential responses to crises and disasters, counter-terrorism, and contingencies in support of South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, or elsewhere in Asia. Since 2006, three joint exercises based at Guam called the "Valiant Shield" have boosted U.S. military readiness in the Asian-Pacific region. The defence build-up on Guam has been moderate. China still has concerns about Guam''s build-up, suspecting it to be directed against China. There has been concern that China and North Korea could target Guam with missiles. Still, Guam''s role increased in engaging with China''s military. This book examines the U.S. defence build-up on Guam with a focus on defence deployments; the costs and challenges in meeting construction timelines; and proposed military treatment facilities on Guam.
