Militaria, arms and armour Books
Trustees of the Royal Armouries British Ordnance Muskets of the 1830s and 1840s:
Book SynopsisBritish Ordnance Muskets identifies and analyses in detail 18 ordnance muskets from the 1830s and 1840s. As well as providing the history and details of the muskets of this important period when the Ordnance transitioned from flintlock to percussion arms, it also covers the impact of two arms shortages, material losses suffered in the Tower of London fire (1841) and the obsolescence of all existing arms for the Militia and Volunteers. By consulting original records, Adrian Roads also offers much about the gun contractors themselves: what drove them, what irked them and their capacity for work. It includes several appendices that facilitate in-depth research into any British ordnance percussion musket held in a collection or under consideration for acquisition, making it an invaluable resource for researchers, students of arms and collectors alike.Table of ContentsPart 1 ~ ‘Pre-Pattern’ Muskets 1. Book SynopsisFeaturing specially commissioned color artwork and drawing upon a range of sources, this engaging study casts new light on the origins, development, construction, and use of the bayonet in warfare from the mid-17th century onwards.Although muskets delivered devastating projectiles at comparatively long ranges, their slow rate of fire left the soldier very vulnerable while reloading, and early muskets were useless for close-quarter fighting. Consequently, European infantry regiments of the 17th century were composed of both musketeers and pikemen, who protected the musketeers while loading but also formed the shock component for close-quarter combat. The development of the flintlock musket produced a much less cumbersome and faster-firing firearm. When a short knife was stuck into its muzzle, every soldier could be armed with a missile weapon as well as one that could be used for close combat. The only disadvantage was that the musket could not be loaded Table of ContentsIntroduction Development Use Impact Conclusion Glossary Bibliography Index

John Wiley & Sons Weapons of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
Book SynopsisWhen Meriwether Lewis began shopping for supplies and firearms to take on the Corps of Discovery's journey west, his first stop was a federal arsenal. In Weapons of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Jim Garry describes the arms and ammunition the expedition carried and the use and care those weapons received.Trade ReviewAnyone even mildly curious about the Lewis and Clark expedition will appreciate this remarkable assembly of information about every type of weapon the explorers carried. Much more than a catalog, Jim Garry's book is an easily read pictorial history of the use of these arms. Beyond that, it gives us, in the explorers' own words, accounts of when and how they used the weapons. No Lewis and Clark collection will be complete without this book."" John D. W.
