V&R unipress GmbH The Mamluk Sultanate from the Perspective of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Mamluk Sultanate represents an extremely interesting case study to examine social, economic and cultural developments in the transition into the rapidly changing modern world. On the one hand, it is the heir of a political and military tradition that goes back hundreds of years, and brought this to a high pitch that enabled astounding victories over serious external threats. On the other hand, as time went on, it was increasingly confronted with modern problems that would necessitate fundamental changes in its structure and content. The Mamluk period was one of great religious and social change, and in many ways the modern demographic map was established at this time. This volume shows that the situation of the Mamluk Sultanate was far from that of decadence, and until the end it was a vibrant society (although not without tensions and increasing problems) that did its best to adapt and compete in a rapidly changing world.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWith a rich history of conflicts, a society full of contrasts, Lebanon presents a theater not less fascinating with its wide spectrum of social peculiarities. Confessionalism, which crystallizes to a key concept in the social balance as well as its misbalance, defines the images of the "self" and of the "other" within the Christian and Moslem social worlds and in the manner they interrelate with each other. It also generates a complex base for the interpretation of theatrical signs and symbols, theater being another stage for interaction between two conflicting social worlds. This book sheds a light on theater in Lebanon, its production and reception, the significance of theatrical performance and its implications, and the many categories ruling this phenomenon.

Book SynopsisThe Saljūqnāma, very probably penned between 1177 and 1186 by Zahīr al-Dīn Nīshāpūri, is one of the main sources of the political, social an cultural events in the history of the The Great Saljūq and the Saljūq o Iraq. Dedicated to Abū Ṭālīb Ṭughril b. Arslan the last Iraqi Saljuq ruler (1177-1194), the work is the first known Saljūqnāma and a main referece for the historians studying the Saljūq history, which makes the work extremely outstanding and notable. Depending on the work of A.H. • Israeli Memory Struggle: History & Identity in

University Press of Southern Denmark Israeli Memory Struggle: History & Identity in

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Israeli Memory Struggle'' analyses changes of Israeli imaginations of history and identity through the 1990s. This particular decade of Israeli history was characterized by significant cultural clashes and vigorous debates over Jewish-Israeli history, identity, literature and not the least the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. The book provides thought provoking perspectives on issues related to the so-called post-Zionism debates and the globalization of Israeli society through the 1990s. It critically investigates the new Israeli historians, prominent authors of the 1990s, diasporic philosophy and Israel''s 50th anniversary in 1998 in the shape of TV documentary, Tekumah. Finally, the book discusses new tendencies in Israeli culture production that are suggestive to Jewish-Israeli identity in the age of globalization. Located within the field of Cultural Studies, the book is highly theoretically engaged. It integrates the perspectives of cultural studies and post-colonial studies with a literary approach to historiography inspired by Haden White and Richard Rorty. In the perspective of this book, histories are seen to working social institutions that set the parameters of what is real and common sense, on the one hand, and what is ideological and radical on the other. The book presents detailed theoretical investigations of the historical imagination as a social fact in an Israeli context.

Book SynopsisThis is a compelling and moving account of life in Israel today. In a series of essays, author and Jerusalem resident Judy Lash Balint travels to the very heart of Israel. From embattled Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip, to the home of the grieving family of a victim of the Ramallah lynching incident; from the barricades in Gilo under Arab fire, to the gas mask stations where Israeli citizens queue to collect their lifesaving equipment. These vivid descriptions piece together a stirring portrait of a people struggling to maintain normal life in the most abnormal of settings. Balint succeeds where the evening news and the most sophisticated media technologies fail. She chronicles the everyday existence of ordinary citizens, whose lives have been irrevocably altered by extraordinary events. The result is an absorbing and inspiring account of a nation and a country weathering a rough and relentless storm.

Book SynopsisThe story of Miriam Peretz''s life the story of a mother and a homeland; of love for the Land of Israel, the State of Israel, and the Jewish people; and of the victory of spirit and faith. 1st Lieutenant Uriel Peretz, commander of a Golani Brigade Special Forces unit, dreamed of becoming the first Moroccan chief of staff of the IDF. But his mother Miriam sensed that her oldest son would not leave Lebanon safely. On the day he was drafted, she became a woman waiting for news of disaster. In November 1998, Uriel was fatally wounded by an explosive device planted by Hezbollah terrorists. He was 22. Miriam transformed the pain over his death into education and volunteer service. She began to visit schools and military bases, talking about her son''s leadership vision. Tragically, in March 2010 Miriam was forced to face another test. Her second son, Major Eliraz Peretz, was killed in an exchange of fire in the Gaza Strip. He died almost twelve years after he had eulogized his older brother: Sometimes we pay a price for doing the right thing. The price of life. Eliraz, who was 32, left behind a wife and four children, including a baby just two months old. Overnight, the mother who lost two sons as well as her husband, whose heart couldn''t bear the death of his oldest son became a symbol of grief and of strength. In December 2010, IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi awarded her a medal of appreciation. He said: Miriam''s ability to continue to express her deep pain and channel it into a contribution to the education and formation of future generations, serves as an example and model of inspiration for us all.

This book sheds light on the global changes taking place as harbingers of the modern era from a regional perspective focusing on the eastern Mediterranean region, in which the pace of conflicts escalated due to the rise of the Ottomans to the forefront of events in the Islamic world, and the imbalance of power. This period of time laid the foundation for the events and struggles of the modern era. The Ottomans in the Near East continued to fight against the intervention of foreign powers until their defeat in the First World War and the subsequent division of Islamic lands between the European colonial powers, a move with consequences from which we continue to suffer from today.

We are pleased to present the second volume of the project "Qatar and the Arabian Gulf States in the Documents of the Indian Archives, Selections from the Indian National Archives in Delhi", which includes the translation of documents related to Qatar and the Arabian Gulf States and their relationship with the various international powers, as well as regional and local ones, in the period (1872-1875), as monitored in the records of the British Government and the Indian British Government. • Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press Bridges not Barriers

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book reveals the intricacies of inter-civilisational relations between Northern and Southern countries and details the resultant mistreatment of Southern nations. It discusses the North's centralizing and condescending approach that has greatly harmed both stability and peace in the modern world. Starting with the author's own personal experience and proceeding to offer a succinct historical overview, the West's blatant disregard for many contributions from other human civilizations - including the Arab-Islamic civilisation - appear in stark contrast. Having worked in the fields of diplomacy and culture for decades, the author aims to remind this generation of Arabs of their own heritage, hitherto overshadowed by conflicts and neglect of their role in building human civilization. The author calls for building bridges instead of erecting barriers and a completely new approach to relations between the North and the South; a message which resonates globally. "Bridges, not Barriers" is already in circulation in Arabic, German, French, Spanish and Farsi.

Academic Studies Press End of Days Ethics, Tradition, and Power in

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisEnd of Days is both a meditation on Jewish morality in the age of Israeli Jewish power, and a cri du coeur by an Orthodox Israeli Jew, a former combat officer in the IDF, for Israelis to look into the Jewish religious ethical tradition for an alternative to the secular and religious Zionism that sanctifies power, statehood, and sovereignty. Appealing to a wealth of Jewish sources from the Bible to the present, including medieval Jewish ethical literature, rabbinic sources, Jewish law, and contemporary Israeli thought, the book presents an argument against Israel’s occupation of the Palestinians and the suppression of their rights from the perspective of a modern Israeli religious Jew.Trade Review“Drawing on an impressive range of sources—the Talmud, the writings of Ashkenazi and Sephardic medieval Jewish pietists, the Chofetz Chaim’s forgotten guide for Jewish soldiers, the Yiddish poetry of Jacob Glatstein—Manekin traces in compelling detail the traditional Jewish ethical disposition that recoils from pride, abhors violence, and views power with suspicion. He argues that this traditional Jewish ethics requires a radically different approach to the reality of Jewish political power instantiated by the Israeli state than the dominant view in Israel allows. By the book’s end, he leaves the reader with little doubt that not only is there no need to compromise one’s commitment to Jewish tradition in order to oppose Israel’s occupation, but that a commitment to traditional Jewish ethics requires active opposition to the occupation. Powerful yet unconventional, [this book] is a hybrid of memoir, mussar [morality], family history, halakhic argumentation, and social criticism. It is a manifesto for a new religiously committed Jewish left that is taking shape.”— Joshua Leifer, Tel Aviv Review of Books (on the Hebrew edition)Table of ContentsPreface, by Shaul MagidIntroductionAcknowledgments Remembering Patience Submission Devotion Contentment Listening Index

Book Synopsis“Poignant . . . deeply personal . . . an indelible history of the largely forgotten Jews of Egypt . . . ”Miami Herald In vivid and graceful prose, Lucette Lagnado re-creates the majesty and cosmopolitan glamour of Cairo in the years before Gamal Abdel Nasser's rise to power. With Nasser's nationalization of Egyptian industry, her father, Leon, a boulevardier who conducted business in his white sharkskin suit, loses everything, and departs with the family for any land that will take them. The poverty and hardships they encounter in their flight from Cairo to Paris to New York are strikingly juxtaposed against the beauty and comforts of the lives they left behind.
