    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a self-contained, concise, rigorous book introducing the reader to the basics of atmospheric thermodynamics. This new edition has been brought completely up to date and reorganized and is an ideal text for short undergraduate courses taken as part of an atmospheric science, meteorology, physics or natural science program.Trade Review' … Tsonis does an excellent job. … the book certainly achieves its aim of a clear, concise and well-presented introduction to atmospheric thermodynamics and I would recommend it as ideal as a teaching resource.' Weather'… a handy reference for many of the basic concepts …' EOS'This is really a student's book, not a monograph pressed into classroom service. The strength of Tsonis' book is that the author talks to the students without sacrificing rigor. He has included many good examples at the end of each chapter; these examples are, so to speak, application notes … problems are given too, to tease and torture the students. In general, the pace is unhurried and unforbidding. The book is attractively produced. … the book has a niche as a first exposure beyond basic physics to the marvelous complexities of the gaseous atmosphere.' Bulletin of American Meteorological Society'Overall this text has the potential to be a future classic for atmospheric thermodynamics.' Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society'…well written and nicely produced.' Kedar N. Shukla, Zentralblatt MATH'The book is clearly written and provides an appreciable and concise introduction to the major concepts of atmospheric thermodynamics. Various examples, along with their solutions, are provided at the end of any chapter and discussed in detail.' Meteorologische ZeitschriftTable of ContentsPreface; 1. Basic definitions; 2. Some useful mathematical and physical topics; 3. Early experiments and laws; 4. The first law of thermodynamics; 5. The second law of thermodynamics; 6. Water and its transformations; 7. Moist air; 8. Vertical stability in the atmosphere; 9. Thermodynamic diagrams; 10. Beyond this book; References; Appendix; Index.

With student exercises at the end of each chapter and worked solutions online, this is an invaluable resource for any related course.Trade Review'This textbook is well-structured, coherently explained and it is ideally priced for advanced students and researchers in the fields of aeronautical, mechanical and environmental engineering as well as oceanography, applied mathematics and physics.' International Journal of Metrology'The many quotations from researchers working in the field provide an interesting historical perspective. Such personal touches are welcome in a turbulence text. The book would probably be most accessible to students of atmospheric science who are familiar with concepts such as static stability and geostrophic balance. Nevertheless, Turbulence in the Atmosphere is admirable in its exposition and its breadth. It will still serve well as a graduate textbook and certainly conveys the author's affection for the subject.' Joseph H. LaCasce, Universitetet i Oslo'… provides a modern introduction to turbulence in the atmosphere and in engineering flows, written by a specialist in the field. … an excellent textbook on atmospheric turbulence with a fully developed mathematical presentation for advanced students and researchers in the atmospheric sciences, meteorology, aeronautical, mechanical and environmental engineering, and oceanography. … written in an agreeable and clear way … should be included in the library of every researcher in the field.' • Cambridge University Press The Arctic Climate System Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis second edition brings this definitive book up to date with the many advances in our understanding of Arctic climate since the first edition was published in 2005. The book has also been extensively reorganized to weave issues of Arctic change throughout the text, rather than confining them to a single chapter. It is the first to provide an integrated assessment of the Arctic climate system, recognizing that a true understanding of how the Arctic functions lies in appreciating the interactions among its various components. The book begins with a historical perspective, followed by discussion of the basic physical and climatic characteristics of the Arctic. Following a review of past climates (paleoclimates), the book closes with an assessment of the Arctic's uncertain future. Though targeted mainly at advanced students and researchers, this book is accessible to anyone with an interest in the Arctic and a basic understanding of climate science.Trade ReviewReview of the first edition: '… comprehensive and up-to-date book … A wealth of valuable information about the recent climate of the Arctic is presented … [in] this excellent volume … This is one of the best books on the Arctic climate system and should be required reading for all scientists and students engaged in the study of the Arctic environment.' Polar GeographyReview of the first edition: 'I do like this book, which indicates current knowledge concerning the climate of the Arctic and its interaction with the lower latitudes as of today. The authors made a major effort to include recent advances … This book will be essential for all climatologists interested in the Arctic.' Polar RecordReview of the first edition: 'The authors demonstrate their expert knowledge and understanding of the topic of climate and provide a comprehensive coverage of this topic, which is likely to appeal to and be useful to many readers.' Journal of GlaciologyReview of the first edition: 'Researchers and students will delight in The Arctic Climate System, and I can honestly report that if I could have only one text or resource on Arctic climatology, this would be it. Perhaps the best recommendation I can give is to report that I have already adopted this text for the graduate course that I teach in Arctic Climate Dynamics. I expect it will maintain this place for many years and future editions.' Arctic: Journal of the Arctic Institute of North AmericaTable of Contents1. • The Atmospheric General Circulation

Cambridge University Press The Atmospheric General Circulation

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn engaging, comprehensive, richly illustrated advanced undergraduate and graduate level textbook about the atmospheric general circulation, written by leading researchers. This textbook relates fundamental theoretical principles to observations, and contains extensive exercises and online resources.Trade Review'Sure to become the standard textbook and reference for those interested in the atmospheric circulation. Written by a team that can only be described as world-leading, and especially strong on graphical and visual aspects, the book will be immensely valuable for students and experienced scientists alike.' Geoffrey Vallis, University of Exeter'Surpasses any textbook currently available on the large-scale fluid dynamics of our atmosphere. The balance between figures, equations, and qualitative discussion is superb. Insightful nuggets interspersed throughout will provide food for thought for advanced students and researchers at all levels.' Isaac Held, formerly Princeton University and GFDL/NOAA'This book is an enormously broad and detailed overview of the atmospheric circulation that combines perspectives gained over the sixty-year career of the first author with resources and ideas that are truly up-to-date, ranging from the exploitation of global reanalysis datasets to provide illustrations of important atmospheric characteristics and phenomena, to discussion of very recent events such as the Tonga eruption earlier this year. Those who study the atmospheric circulation or, more broadly, the climate system, will find much here to inform and stimulate them. A book of this scope would surely not have been completed without the evident unselfish cooperation between the four main authors and the team of individual co-authors on particular chapters – to the great benefit of future readers. The illustrations alone, both those based on observations and those based on specially designed model studies, will be an immensely valuable resource to those teaching courses on the atmosphere and the climate.' Peter Haynes, Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), University of Cambridge'This majestic, once-in-a-generation treatise is a graduate multi-course treasure-trove. The authors lead off starkly with the latest observations and ideas (heuristics), then lucidly review the rigorous skeleton of quantitative physical constraints and budgets. From that solid base, Parts III-V parade appreciatively through distinctly updated treatments of now-'classical' mid-20th century topics of the zonal mean and its deviations, and of the stratosphere, using the power of 21st-century theory, models, data, and (not least) display. The Tropics including moist variability and internal waves, long under-emphasized or scattered in the literature, are featured at generous length and depth in the especially novel contributions of Part VI.' Brian Mapes, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, University of Miami'This book started with Mike Wallace wanting to write a summary of what has been learnt about the atmospheric general circulation since the mid-20th century. With the help of the other authors, this has been achieved in a superb book, containing a wonderful collection of figures together with a clear, concise theoretical development. It should be on the desk of anyone interested in the subject, from a student taking a course to a researcher aiming to enhance understanding of how the atmosphere works or how climate may change in future.' Sir Brian Hoskins, Imperial College London'Written by a team of highly regarded experts, this up-to-date book covers a very wide range of topics in the atmospheric general circulation in a well-organized fashion. The thorough treatment of both concepts and the more advanced mathematics will make this an important resource for advanced students and experienced researchers alike.' David Straus, George Mason University'This textbook provides a modern and comprehensive overview of the physical processes involved in the general circulation of the atmosphere. Rigorous discussions are accompanied by very clear schematics that make it easy to grasp even the most complex phenomena. It's engaging and fun … a real joy to read!' Giuseppe Torri, University of Hawaii'For students with some background in atmospheric dynamics, this is a landmark new textbook that provides a fascinating exploration of numerous aspects of the general circulation of the atmosphere. Wallace and co-authors expand what can be expected in a book on the general circulation, including circulations on many timescales in the tropical and extratropical troposphere and middle atmosphere, in all cases building understanding of the observed flows and physical mechanisms.' Paul O'Gorman, Massachusetts Institute of Technology'This is a truly outstanding textbook that offers a comprehensive overview of the atmospheric circulation system and its variability on a wide range of spatial/temporal scales as well as various (thermo-) dynamical processes involved, including air-sea interaction in the Tropics, wave-mean interaction in midlatitudes and troposphere-stratosphere linkages in low and high latitudes. By praiseworthy efforts of the author team led by Mike Wallace, excellent balance is achieved between illustrating phenomena and theoretically interpretating the involved processes. Although most of the topics concern natural variability in the climate system, this book is undoubtedly beneficial for understanding the ongoing anthropogenic climate change.' Hisashi Nakamura, University of Tokyo'This comprehensive study of the atmospheric general circulation, from the tropics to the pole, the troposphere to the stratosphere, strikes the right balance between observation, physical intuition, and theory. The authors have succeeded in producing an excellent textbook that is up-to-date, flexibly organized, and useful for multiple different classes – undoubtedly the go-to resource for experts and students alike.' 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe second edition of this concise, affordable textbook is ideal for curious undergraduate majors and non-majors taking a first course in meteorology. The first two chapters introduce readers to the main concepts and tools used to analyze weather patterns. Chapters 3-8 provide a foundational understanding of the fundamental processes taking place in the atmosphere, and in Chapters 9-12 these physical concepts are applied to specific weather phenomena. Weather concepts are then used in Chapters 13-15 to explain weather forecasting, air pollution, and the impact of climate change on weather. Key concepts are illustrated through a running case study of a single mid-latitude cyclone, providing students with an opportunity to progressively develop their understanding of weather phenomena with a familiar example approached from multiple perspectives. This edition includes expanded and updated coverage of precipitation types and formation, satellite and radar technology, tornadoes, and more. It also features thought-provoking end-of-chapter review questions, new visual analysis exercises, an expanded test bank and nearly 100 new figures.Trade Review'The second edition builds on the strong foundation established by Hakim and Patoux in the first edition. This text is an excellent choice for a non-science majors class or even a first meteorology class for Earth System Science majors. The expanded Appendices and Advanced Topics Boxes allow the instructor to tailor the presentation to the class and provide the curious student with additional enrichment. Clear end of chapter summaries and the new review questions provide a level of engagement for students of many levels. The chapter-spanning case study is an excellent pedagogical tool that ties together many of the concepts presented in the text.' Professor Richard W. Dixon, Texas State University'This textbook on atmospheric sciences is a great introduction for students without strong backgrounds in mathematics and physics. It explains a wealth of weather phenomena in concise, simple, easy to follow steps starting from first principles.' Professor Chuixiang Yi, Queens College'This second edition is a valuable refresh of an excellent introductory undergraduate text on atmospheric science. The book manages to explain complex topics in an engaging and accessible manner, including equations (with clear worked examples) where appropriate. The extensive real world examples, including new visual analysis exercises, are a real strength. I am sure this will remain a popular text with students and instructors alike.' Professor Andrew Ross, University of Leeds'The text has a highly logical topical layout, beginning with basic weather variables then extending into more complex processes to facilitate student comprehension. All pertinent topics are included relative to an introductory weather text but the topics extend from the basic. I especially like the chapter on forecasting as most textbooks peripherally address the topic. The language, detail, explanations, level of information, figures, pictures, and end of chapter materials are all of high quality. Overall, a great textbook!' Professor Anthony J. Vega, Clarion University'This book offers a well-balanced combination of accessibility and rigor in its coverage of weather and climate science. The text is compelling, the illustrations are clear and helpful, and the chapters succinctly cover a great breadth of material in a way that is intuitive but also quantitative. Book SynopsisFor the past twelve thousand years, Earth’s stable climate has allowed human civilization to flourish. But this long benign summer is an anomaly in the Earth’s history and one that is rapidly coming to a close. The radical experiment of our modern industrial civilization is now disrupting our planet’s very metabolism; our future hinges in large part on how Earth responds. Climate change is already bearing down, hitting harder and faster than expected. The greatest danger is not extreme yet discrete weather events, such as Hurricane Katrina or the calamitous wildfires that now plague California, but profound and systemic disruptions on a global scale. Contrary to the pervasive belief that climate change will be a gradual escalator ride into balmier temperatures, the Earth’s climate system has a history of radical shifts-dramatic shocks that could lead to the collapse of social and economic systems. The question is no longer simply how can we stop climate

Book SynopsisAddresses the natural variability of the climate system in the context of global warming Contributes substantially to the ongoing discussion on global warming Integrates state of the art research and brings together modeling and data communities in a balanced way Considers questions of climate change on different time-scales.Trade Review"Volumes such as this provide the historical contexts and broad overviews needed to advance climate change biology toward broader conceptual developments and synthetic methodologies for understanding and predicting climate change effects, as well as developing effective adaptation and mitigation strategies." (The Quarterly Review of Biology, 1 December 2010) "This is an important book for understanding climate changes in a longer perspective." (Geologos, 2010) "This book brings together some of the most prolific names in their field to create a sound and interesting look into this area." (The Environmentalist, November 2009) "It highlights the need to improve not only our understanding of the physical system through time but also our knowledge of human influence on the climate system and vice versa." (Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, April 2009) "Although aimed at 'researchers and advanced students', this layman found the book perfectly accessible." (Geoscientist, August 2009) "The rapid climate change that seems to be occurring world-wide make this volume both timely and instructive, concentrating as it does on the Holocene period.... An essential addition for an meteorological library." (The International Journal of Meteorology, April 2009) "The Holocene, the interval covered by the last 12,000 years, represents a largely nonglacial period in Earth's climatic evolution. This book synthesizes the climate history of this interval and investigates the role of natural climate variability in explaining current global warming. The volume contains ten chapters written by experts in various aspects of past climate change. Chapter 1 provides a short introduction and outlines the objectives/contents of subsequent chapters. The next chapter, the longest (51 pages), considers the progress, paradigms, and problems in Holocene climate research. Chapter 3 addresses the fundamental question of the human role in the changing climate of the Holocene while acknowledging that climate change itself has strongly impacted the history of civilizations. Our ability to predict future climate depends on our ability to reconstruct and model what has already happened; chapter 4 explores this vital issue. Subsequent chapters examine some relevant intervals including the so-called Holocene thermal optimum, and evaluate and model what natural processes might have contributed to observed climate histories. The final chapters assess rapid land-cover change and analyze future climate change within the perspective of the last 12,000 years. Includes chapter references, an eight-page index, and a three-page summary of abbreviations and dating conventions. Summing Up: Recommended."
