Medieval Western philosophy Books
Verso Books Utopia
Book SynopsisFive hundred years since its first publication, Thomas More's Utopia remains astonishingly radical and provocative. More imagines an island nation where thousands live in peace and harmony, men and women are both educated, and property is communal. In a text hovering between fantasy, satire, blueprint and game, More explores the theories and realities behind war, political conflicts, social tensions and redistribution, and imagines the day-to-day lives of a citizenry living free from fear, oppression, violence and suffering. But there has always been a shadow at the heart of Utopia. If this is a depiction of the perfect state, why, as well as wonder, does it provoke a growing unease? In this quincentenary edition, published in conjunction with Somerset House, More's text is introduced by multi-award-winning author China Miéville and accompanied by four essays from Ursula K. Le Guin, today's most distinguished utopian writer and thinker.Trade ReviewWe can't do without this book. We are all and have always been Thomas More's children. -- China MiévilleI am offered the Grand Inquisitor's choice. Will you choose freedom without happiness, or happiness without freedom? The only answer one can make, I think, is: No. -- Ursula K. Le Guin

St Augustine's Press Roger Bacons Philosophy Of Nature
Book SynopsisComprises two of Roger Bacon's works 'De multiplicatione specierum' and 'Dc speculis comburentibus'. Original Latin text with matching English translation.Trade Review"This is truly a beautiful book, carefully wrought to the last detail. Even the printing is exquisite. The ultimate test, to my way of thinking, for this kind of book is how parallel the Latin and English facing pages are. The English translation, in fact, is never behind the Latin text as one turns the page by more than half a line. That is perfection itself." - George March, OFM, 'Speculum'Table of ContentsLatin with facing English translation, preface, abbreviations, introduction, illustrations, textual footnotes, explanatory endnotes, bibliography, appendices, general index, index of manuscripts

St Augustine's Press Veritas Divina – Aquinas On Divine Truth Some
Book SynopsisThis book does some philosophy of religion. It takes as its point of departure what Aquinas calls divine truth (veritas divina), i.e. the collection of truths revealed to man by God. And it tries to make as clear as possible what Aquinas says about some of these revealed truths. Then it agrees or disagrees with what he says, as needed, for reasons of various sorts, whether philosophical, theological, scientific, historical, etc. - of whatever sort, just so long as they are relevant and cogent' to do these things as well as possible, if only in a small way - 'pro nostro modulo', as Aquinas puts it, in describing what he intends to do as the author of the 'Summa Contra Gentiles'. Veritas Divina includes not only certain truths which are attainable by natural reason, like truths abouth certain aspects of the virtue of religion, of prayer, of pain and suffering, of friendship, of death; but also certain truths which are not attainable by natural reason, like truths about the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Eucharist, Purgatory, Heaven, Hell.Table of ContentsIntroduction: What is Philosophy of Religion 1. Ave Maria University Press The Sentences, Book 1
Book SynopsisAlthough he wrote sermons, letters, and commentaries on Holy Scripture, Lombard’s Four Books of Sentences (1148–51) established his reputation and subsequent fame, earning him the title of magister sententiarum (“master of the sentences”). The Sentences, a collection of teachings of the Church Fathers and opinions of medieval masters arranged as a systematic treatise, marked the culmination of a long tradition of theological pedagogy, and until the 16th century it was the official textbook in the universities. Hundreds of scholars wrote commentaries on it, including the celebrated philosopher St. Thomas Aquinas.Book I of the Sentences discusses God, the Trinity, divine guidance, evil, predestination. While Lombard showed originality in choosing and arranging his texts, in utilizing different currents of thought, and in avoiding extremes, of special importance to medieval theologians was his clarification of the theology of the sacraments. He asserted that there are seven sacraments and that a sacrament is not merely a “visible sign of invisible grace” (after Augustine of Hippo) but also the “cause of the grace it signifies.” In ethical matters, he decreed that a man’s actions are judged good or bad according to their cause and intention, except those acts that are evil by nature.
