  • Signs of Disability

New York University Press Signs of Disability

Book SynopsisHow can we learn to notice the signs of disability? We see indications of disability everywhere: yellow diamond-shaped deaf person in area road signs, the telltale shapes of hearing aids, or white-tipped canes sweeping across footpaths. But even though the signs are ubiquitous, Stephanie L. Kerschbaum argues that disability may still not be perceived due to a process she terms dis-attention.To tell better stories of disability, this multidisciplinary work turns to rhetoric, communications, sociology, and phenomenology to understand the processes by which the material world becomes sensory input that then passes through perceptual apparatuses to materialize phenomenaincluding disability. By adding perception to the understanding of disability's materialization, Kerschbaum significantly expands our understanding of disability, accounting for its fluctuations and transformations in the semiotics of everyday life.Drawing on a set of thirty-three research iTrade ReviewThis engaging, accessible book builds on Stephanie Kerschbaum’s already-award- winning scholarship on difference and discourse, constructing new research methods and approaches, but also building community on these pages. Signs of Disability offers an incredibly generative vocabulary for understanding the ways that disability matters: how we mark and signal it, how we ignore and hide it, how we powerfully inhabit and embody it through stories. Signs of Disability is a transformative book. * Jay Dolmage, University of Waterloo *A lovely, powerful read, Signs of Disability makes consequential, engaging, and evocative contributions to scholarship in disability studies and in rhetorical studies. The book’s theoretical and methodological interventions are significant and it offers cogent readings of texts, material culture, bodies, and more. Stephanie Kerschbaum tells powerful stories and draws readers deeply into the material life of disability and its signs. * Christa J. Olson, University of Wisconsin-Madison *

  • Just Medicine

New York University Press Just Medicine

Book SynopsisOffers an innovative plan to eliminate inequalities in American health care and save the lives they endanger Over 84,000 black and brown lives are needlessly lost each year due to health disparities: the unfair, unjust, and avoidable differences between the quality and quantity of health care provided to Americans who are members of racial and ethnic minorities and care provided to whites. Health disparities have remained stubbornly entrenched in the American health care systemand in Just Medicine Dayna Bowen Matthew finds that they principally arise from unconscious racial and ethnic biases held by physicians, institutional providers, and their patients. Implicit bias is the single most important determinant of health and health care disparities. Because we have missed this fact, the money we spend on training providers to become culturally competent, expanding wellness education programs and community health centers, and even expanding access to health insurance will have only a moTrade Review"Just Medicine is a must-read for everyone! Weaving together from insights from research in history, sociology, psychology, law, and more, Matthew crushes the argument that racial disparities in health and health care are due to factors like biology and bad behavior. Time and time again, Matthew exposes the role of racial bias and discrimination in disparate outcomes. More so, she offers meaningful and achievable suggestions for resolving these problems. Lets hope those with the most power to create these changes are paying attention to this important scholarly contribution!" -- Angela Onwuachi-Willig,Charles M. and Marion J. Kierscht Professor of Law, University of Iowa College of Law"A powerful socio-legal reflection on the history of health disparities and how that terrible legacy now further impedes racial equality and results in death. . . . Masterfully written. The author provides a captivating narrative that is at once stark and grizzly (how many ways can people of color suffer at the hands of medicine) and yet so provocatively and artfully written that one cannot stop reading. Not since Harriet Washington's page-turning (and award-winning) book, Medical Apartheid, has there been another that makes medical discourse so captivating." -- Michele Goodwin,Chancellor’s Professor of Law, University of California, Irvine"A remarkably ambitious and provocative book on the ways that implicit bias exacerbates racial disparities in health. Matthew provides a critical analysis and call to action that should be taken seriously by all health care professionals, policymakers, and anyone interested in health equality." -- Osagie K. Obasogie,UC Hastings"The book is highly engaging and worthwhile reading for health care providers, hospital administrators, insurers, medical students and educators, and those involved in civil rights law." * Health Affairs *"Having presented a thorough picture of the problems facing minorities in the health care system, Matthew proposes a solution: reform of specific sections of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which she claims would provide a legal and moral basis to hold liable those who unconsciously discriminate and would help to establish a new standard of care in medicine....[F]ood for thought here." * Kirkus Reviews *"Her ambitious book lays out a case for a legal remedy for racial health inequality." * Los Angeles Review of Books *"Just Medicine is necessary reading for all who envision a society in which health equity is a moral imperative. I would place Matthew's contributions on the scale of Michelle Alexander's transformational book, The New Jim Crow. Matthew not only documents the problem of color-blind racism but also provides solution-oriented road maps for a way forward." * Political Science Quarterly *"This book will spark much debate." * Choice Connect *

  • The Wetiko Legal Principles

University of Toronto Press The Wetiko Legal Principles

Book SynopsisIn Algonquian folklore, the wetiko is a cannibal monster or spirit that possesses a person, rendering them monstrous. In The Wetiko Legal Principles, Hadley Friedland explores how the concept of a wetiko can be used to address the unspeakable happenings that endanger the lives of many Indigenous children. Friedland critically analyses Cree and Anishinabek stories and oral histories alongside current academic and legal literature to find solutions to the frightening rates of intimate violence and child victimization in Indigenous communities. She applies common-law legal analysis to these Indigenous stories and creates a framework for analysing stories in terms of the legal principles that they contain. The author reveals similarities in thinking and theorizing around the dynamics of wetikos and offenders in cases of child sexual victimization. Friedland’s respectful, strength-based, trauma-informed approach builds on the work of John Trade Review"The Wetiko Legal Principles is a timely and interesting book that addresses prevalent issues in Indigenous communities, such as child victimization and violence, in a unique fashion by mixing narrative and legal analysis." -- Evan Best * Saskatchewan Law Review, vol 82 *Table of ContentsStory #1: Sweet Dirt Chapter 1: Introduction and Methodology Chapter 2: The Wetiko as a Legal Concept or Category Chapter 3: Understanding the Dynamics: The Wetiko and Child Victimization Chapter 4: The Wetiko Legal Principles Chapter 5: Future Directions in Wetiko Law Story #2: Beyond Sweet Dirt Bibliography

Book SynopsisAdding to a growing body of knowledge about how the social-ecological dynamics of the Anthropocene affect human health, this collection presents strategies that both address core challenges, including climate change, stagnating economic growth, and rising socio-political instability, and offers novel frameworks for living well on a finite planet. Rather than directing readers to more sustainable ways to structure health systems, Health in the Anthropocene navigates the transition toward social-ecological systems that can support long-term human and environmental health, which requires broad shifts in thought and action, not only in formal health-related fields, but in our economic models, agriculture and food systems, ontologies, and ethics. Arguing that population health will largely be decided at the intersection of experimental social innovations and appropriate technologies, this volume calls readers to turn their attention toward social movements, practicesTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction to Health in the Anthropocene: Living Well on a Finite Planet Katharine Zywert, University of Waterloo and Stephen Quilley, University of Waterloo Part 1, Population Health in the Anthropocene: Addressing Wicked Problems in the Transition to an Alternative Social-Ecological System Guided by Ecological Constraints Introduction Katharine Zywert, University of Waterloo and Stephen Quilley, University of Waterloo Individual or Community as a Frame of Reference for Health in Modernity and in the Anthropocene Stephen Quilley, University of Waterloo "Regional Overload" as an Indicator of Profound Risk: A Plea for the Public Health Community to Awaken Colin Butler, University of Canberra Medicine and Healthcare in the Anthropocene: Who Pays and Why? University of Toronto Press Neural Integration of Physiological Mechanisms

Book SynopsisPhysiology, unlike most biological sciences, is characterized less by methods of study than by its goal, the understanding of the complex interactions at the cellular and organismic levels. Ever since Claude Bernard’s introduction of the concept of homeostasis as a basic principle of survival, biological scientists have attempted to integrate mechanisms characteristic of organs and systems to explain the overall functioning of the whole animal. This book is dedicated to the memory of the distinguished Canadian physiology J.A.F. Stevenson, who maintained in his teaching and research activities a holistic approach to the study of physiological regulations and life processes. Two of the book’s introductory essays are tributes by men who remember James Stevenson as a scientist and as a friend. The third gives a sketch of early studies of physiological regulations. The twenty-four remaining articles serve as examples of integrated physiological regulations with speci

The essays, given originally as lectures at one of the Jubilee celebrations of the University of Saskatchewan, were deliberately designed to be of interest to laymen concerned with the problem of education as well as to academics dealing daily with products of the brain's activity in teaching and learning. One of the main themes of the book is that the human brain has far greater potentialities than our present methods of education are exploiting; another is that, although our universities can be said to owe their very existence to the multiplex activities of the human mind, the subject of how the brain functions and the application of even our rather meagre knowledge of this field to the sphere of teaching and learning remains greatly neglected in university programmes. He delivers a clear and convincing argument for a complete shift in the global and U.S. approach to developing and providing essential medicinesand a primer on how to make that change happen. Globally, 10 million people die each year because they are unable to pay for medicines that would save them. The cost of prescription drugs is bankrupting families and putting a strain on state and federal budgets. Patients' desperate need for affordable medicines clashes with the core business model of the powerful pharmaceutical industry, which maximizes profits whenever possible. It doesn't have to be this way. Patients and activists are aiming to make all essential medicines affordable by reclaiming medicines as a public good and a human right, instead of a profit-making commodity. Book SynopsisSearching the internet for health information or using health apps on mobile devices has become part of our daily routine, yet can be just as disempowering as empowering. This engaging overview critically examines the theoretical underpinning of digital health promotion and the use of digital tools and strategies to promote health. Ivy O’Neil investigates how modern technologies can enhance health services provision and increase the accessibility and efficiency of health communication and promotion. She also looks at the challenges they bring to the social model of health, as they often focus on the individual and neglect the many social, environmental and economic determinants of health. Digital technologies, O’Neil argues, can have negative as well as positive implications and may be contributing to the ever-widening health inequality gap, thereby failing to be compatible with health promotion principles and values. Offering a critical, practical and thoughtful overview of the application and usefulness of digital technology, this book will appeal to students of public health and health promotion, communication and policy. Trade Review‘This book addresses a significant need, exploring health promotion strategies in light of new digital technologies and advances in communications. I particularly appreciate the incorporation of values-based and ethical considerations, with emphasis on health inequities and a more critical health promotion practice – perspectives of key importance in our current communications climate.’Charlotte Lombardo, Program Director, MPH–Health Promotion, University of Toronto ‘Digital technologies have major implications for healthcare and public health. Boydell & Brewer Ltd Childrens Health and Urban Ecology in England

Book SynopsisAnalyzes public health efforts to reduce infant mortality and improve children's health in three large English cities: Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. While English public health efforts had reduced the threat of infectious diseases and improved sanitation by the end of the Victorian era, soaring infant mortality rates brought children's health to the forefront of public health concerns. Efforts to understand the causes of infant mortality and improve children's survival required attention to the environments where infant mortality was often highest, i.e., in the cities. Children's Health and Urban Ecology in England, 1885-1919 examines the history of urban public health campaigns in three of the largest English cities, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. It considers how local environments impacted children's health by creating ecological conditions ripe for the spread of disease, as well as opportunities for improvements and interventions. Between 1885 and 1919, English public health leaders began to establish increasingly localized approaches to public health that included interventions in households and at schools. This work was conducted by new types of public health professionals, including health visitors to new mothers and school medical officers. While these programs emerged from local environmental conditions, two imperial military conflicts (the Second Anglo-Boer War and the First World War) drew national attention to the importance of children's health. In examining the effects of these conflicts as well as the urgent response to local environmental conditions, Children's Health and Urban Ecology highlights how the epicenter of public health shifted from cities to the state by the end of the First World War.

  • Putting Plastic Surgery on Paper

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Putting Plastic Surgery on Paper

Book SynopsisTaking an interdisciplinary approach to medical history, this book shows the key role that drawings and photographs had in shaping the material, professional, emotional and aesthetic parameters of reconstructive plastic surgery in Britain during the 20th century.Plastic surgery in twentieth-century Britain was a medical discipline with deep ties to art, artists and art history. It was also a field still in the process of creating its reputation and its archives. Putting Plastic Surgery on Paper examines these archives, focusing in particular on the works on paper held within these collections by two artists: Diana "Dickie" Orpen and Percy Hennell. Plastic surgeons depended upon the drawings and photographs made by these and other medical illustrators to craft certain narratives about their field and their surgical practice. In addition to telling an art history of plastic surgery during this period, Putting Plastic Surgery on Paper engages with the affective parameters of archival objects, and with what working as a historian involves when done within potentially traumatic spaces. Paying particular attention to the emotional dimensions and effects of this visual culture and the ways in which it is archived and framed by the discipline of plastic surgery - then and now - Putting Plastic Surgery on Paper explores not only what it meant to make art in a surgical space, but also what it means to study these affecting paper objects in the archive today. • Health Education and Prevention

ISTE Ltd and John Wiley & Sons Inc Health Education and Prevention

Book SynopsisSocial representations, beliefs, values and knowledge are just some of the aspects that affect how the beneficiaries of preventative health measures perceive their wellbeing. Health Education and Prevention questions and analyzes these concepts in order to consider new ways of theorizing patients’ conceptions of their health. From a methodological point of view, these analyses are put into practice with the design of prevention tools and devices. The use of a corpora of photographs is particularly meaningful in this respect. This book offers an authoritative perspective by noting important points of vigilance in training, and especially by distinguishing instructive contents conducive to the development of an explicit health pedagogy for more effective prevention measures. A model for categorizing situations integrating both educational and healthcare paths is also proposed. Table of Contents1. Conceptions and Deciding for One’s Health. 2. • Climate Change and Global Health

CABI Climate Change and Global Health

Book SynopsisThere is increasing understanding that climate change will have profound, mostly harmful effects on human health. In this authoritative book, international experts examine long-recognized areas of health concern for populations vulnerable to climate change, describing effects that are both direct, such as heat waves, and indirect, such as via vector-borne diseases. Set in a broad international, economic, political and environmental context, this unique book expands these issues by reviving and championing a third ('tertiary') category of longer term impacts on global health: famine, population dislocation, conflict and collapse. This edition has an expanded foundation, with new chapters discussing nuclear war, population and limits to growth, among others. This lively yet scholarly resource explores all these issues, finishing with a practicaldiscussion of avenues to reform. As Mary Robinson, former UN High Commissioner for Hum

  • Communication and Professional Relationships in Healthcare Practice

Equinox Publishing Ltd Communication and Professional Relationships in Healthcare Practice

Book SynopsisCommunication and Professional Relationships in Healthcare Practice focuses on the crucial role that spoken interactions play in shaping relationships in contemporary healthcare practice. The authors apply theoretical concepts of communication to the workplace of healthcare, drawing upon scenarios based in the settings of clinical experience. The book presents a wide range of interactions (including consultations, team meetings, dialogues and casual conversations) between health professionals, their colleagues and their clients or patients in a variety of settings. Drawing on the latest research in applied linguistics and professional communication, the authors introduce readers to a number of approaches that can be used to analyse these interactions. Using these techniques, readers will discover exactly how central themes of healthcare practice (including trust, empathy, expertise and breaking bad news) are constructed through the communicative choices that participants make in these interactions. Designed specifically for medical, nursing and allied health practitioners with an interest in communication, the book makes the techniques of discourse analysis accessible and provides ample opportunities for individual practitioners to apply this knowledge to their own professional contexts.Trade Review'Refreshingly, the book addresses communication not only in interactions between health professionals and patients, but amongst team members and between health professionals in an array of communicatively challenging real world contexts. It brings home to the reader the complexity of communication in health care, and it offers practitioners many tools for reflecting on their own and others' communicative practices, and for enhancing their professional interactions.' • Center for Global Development Making Markets for Vaccines: Ideas to Action

Book SynopsisMaking a commitment in advance to buy vaccines if and when they are developed would create incentives for industry to increase investment in research and development. New commercial investment would complement funding of research and development by public and charitable bodies, accelerating the development of vital new vaccines for the developing world. This report presents the proposal from theory to practice, by showing how a commitment can be consistent with ordinary legal and budgetary principles. By creating arrangements that devote the same scientific effort to diseases of the poor as we put into diseases of the rich, we can make a lasting contribution to the defeat of poverty.Trade Review"MAKING MARKETS FOR VACCINES goes to the heart of one of the most tragic market failures of our times." —Trevor Manuel, Minister of Finance, South Africa|"[This book] offers specific and creative proposals for utilizing market mechanisms to address one of the critical challenges facing the world today." —Meles Zenawi, Prime Minister, Ethiopia|"This is an innovative and practical idea which would unleash the resources of the private sector to develop vaccines that would protect millions of people from terrible diseases. MAKING MARKETS FOR VACCINES is policy analysis at its best: realistic, evidence-based and focused on the world's most pressing challenges." —Tony Blair, Prime Minister, United Kingdom|"The advance purchase commitments recommended in this book will provide important additional incentives for private sector research and development... The authors are to be congratulated for bringing this incisive analysis forward at a time when major breakthroughs are possible in development finance." —Richard G. A. Feachem, Executive Director, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria|"The idea explored in this remarkable book--that a firm commitment be made to buy vaccines at prices and in quantities that attract private resources into developing urgently needed new vaccines--is an interesting and important innovation. It deserves the widest possible attention and action." —Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati, Columbia University, author of IN DEFENSE OF GLOBALIZATION
