  • Immunology of Behçet's Disease

Taylor & Francis Ltd Immunology of Behçet's Disease

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBehçet's Disease (BD) is one of the most-studied systemic disorders characterized by an occlusive vasculopathy of multiple organs. The etiology and pathogenesis of BD are still unclear, but there is evidence for genetic, immunologic and infectious factors in the onset and throughout the course of the disease. Immunology of Behçet's Disease highlights various aspects of BD. After an epidemiological overview, the clinical presentation of ocular and non-ocular symptoms of BD are summarized. The immunopathological changes reflect a chronic vasculitis of arterioles, venules and capillaries. The role of T-cells, but also of NK-T-cells, secreted cytokines and neutrophils is covered. For years microorganisms have been under investigation as initiating BD and, in particular, immune reactions against various microbial heat shock proteins could be an important etiological factor. It has been shown that the pathogenic gene involved in the development of BD is pinpointed to HLA-B51. Finally, the treatment of BD is discussed in detail, including new options like anti-TNF-alpha-antibodies and interferon-alpha. Immunology of Behçet's Disease summarizes our knowledge regarding the most important factors that induce or trigger BD and will stimulate research in the field and help to initiate new ideas.Table of Contents1. • Cell Adhesion and Migration in Skin Disease

Taylor & Francis Ltd Cell Adhesion and Migration in Skin Disease

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe past few years have seen considerable advances in our understanding of the molecular basis underlying cutaneous cell adhesion mechanisms. Co-authored by a number of leading experts in the field ^Cell Adhesion and Migration in Skin Disease provides a comprehensive overview of the critical role played by cell adhesion in determining the structure and function of both healthy and diseased human skin. The book is divided into three main sections, with each one addressing a principal function of adhesion molecules. The first part focuses on the epidermis, which as the skin's outermost layer, acts as the human body's primary barrier of defence. Roles played by cytoskeletal intermediate filaments and junctional complexes in cutaneous cell adhesion are emphasised with descriptions of blistering skin diseases that can arise if these molecules malfunction. The second part describes the macromolecular interactions responsible for the anchorage of cells to the underlying extracellular basement membrane. The experimental approaches detailed in the text not only reveal how the molecular components of the dermal-epidermal junction have been elucidated, but also highlight how mutations in the genes which encode these molecules are responsible for many heritable skin diseases. Leukocytes continually infiltrate the skin and patrol it for potentially harmful pathogens. Control of leukocyte adhesion to resident cells within the skin and to the extracellular matrix plays a key role in controlling these processes. These mechanisms constitute the primary focus of the final section. The pivotal role of leukocytes is examined in conjunction with the chronic inflammatory diseases which arise when components of the skin's finely tuned defence strategy go awry and the potential for these anomalies to be pinpointed as important immunotherapeutic targets for skin diseases.Table of Contents1. • Ultrasonic Diagnostics in Medicine: Physical

Brill Ultrasonic Diagnostics in Medicine: Physical

Book SynopsisTo correctly diagnose a human organism with the help of acoustic waves is impossible without knowledge of the physics of acoustic waves interaction with the issues of the organism. This book is dedicated to the given problem. It consists of four sections, the first of which deals with physical models of the biological issues used in ultrasonic diagnostics. In the other sections the basic stages of ultrasonic diagnostics (sound radiation, sound scattering, depictions visualization) are studied. It is shown how different bodies and issues of a human organism scatter acoustic waves and how, using the scattered wave, one learns about what happens with some body or issue.Trade ReviewVery didactically organized, with ample attention for mathematical detail, which nowhere becomes so complicated that it obscures the physics behind it [...] The first three chapter give a thorough but accessible description of the physics of ultrasonic pulse-echo imaging, while the fourth discusses the possible methods to apply these data for 2D, 3D or time-dependent imagery [...] This book is a useful addition to the ultrasonic imaging literature, stepping into the - rather large - gap between more engineering-oriented texts and theoretical works. Book SynopsisBringing together colorful historical vignettes, social and anthropological theory, and quantitative analyses, this title examines these interactions between the Khmer, Cham, and Vietnamese of Cambodia and the French, documenting the differences in their understandings of medicine.Trade Review"Mixed Medicines is just the sort of book that the field of colonial medicine has been clamoring for. It offers much more than a study of the imposition of French colonial medicine on the Khmer people of Cambodia; it show us why people 'mix' health care practices in ways that make sense to them but baffle others. This brilliant book will inform scholars and policymakers alike." (Ken Alder, Northwestern University)"

It demonstrates how generosity is renewed through dialogue.Trade Review"Frank's vision of how a lost sense of story could be restored to medicine is both lucid and profound.... • Me Medicine vs. We Medicine

Columbia University Press Me Medicine vs. We Medicine

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewDonna Dickenson's book offers a compelling and overarching framework for interpreting new trends in biomedical science, such as gene biobanks, pharmacogenetics, and the banking of cord blood. It forces the reader to ask whether every new technological advance in medicine truly betters the field-and for whom. -- Sheldon Krimsky, Tufts University Few words have as much ethical clout these days as that of 'choice,' a word that can be construed as the centrality of 'me.' Donna Dickenson's splendid book shows how deeply the 'me' has become embedded in medicine and abetted by the seemingly unchallengeable ethical concept of autonomy. What we have lost is the importance of 'we.' Using personalized medicine as her point of departure, she brilliantly works her way through a range of recent medical developments to show the damage the dominance of 'me' can bring. Her book can help restore the 'us' that has been diminished. -- Daniel Callahan, cofounder and president emeritus of The Hastings Center and author of The Roots of Bioethics: Health, Progress, Technology, Death In this timely book, Dickenson levels trenchant criticism at the poster child of the twenty-first-century biomedical establishment: 'personalized medicine.' Analyzing an impressive array of practices in the new life sciences, she makes a persuasive argument that, as personalized medicine unfolds, market values and individualism are trumping the ideals of public health. This book comes at a critical moment. As we reappraise the social contract of health care, this book helps better direct research and development towards the common good. -- David Winickoff, University of California, Berkeley Donna Dickenson's book is a seminal philosophical examination of the enthusiastic embrace of 'personalized medicine,' questioning easy assumptions about its benefits for patient care and for public health. Dickenson sounds powerful warnings about the extent to which personalized medicine risks confusion with individual self-interest and the devotion of biotechnology for private gain. -- Leslie Francis, University of Utah, co-author of The Patient as Victim and Vector: Bioethics and Infectious Disease Recognizing that there are trade-offs in how we conceptualize medicine as either driven and developed for the common good or specialized for the individual, Dickenson offers an important examination of contemporary medicine and a beautifully written account of what is at stake when the common good is overlooked. Hands down, she is one of the most insightful contributors to law and medicine discourse, and this book is a must-read for everyone concerned about the future of biotechnology. -- Michele B. Goodwin, University of Minnesota, and editor of Baby Markets: Money and the New Politics of Creating Families If you are wondering what to make of personalized medicine's grand claims, let Dickenson be your guide. Turning her keen scientific and political intelligence to biotech visions of individually tailored drugs, consumer gene tests, enhancement technologies, and more, she finds tidbits of hope for improving health care among scads of hype-some of it dangerous. This must-read book makes a powerful case for taming market domination and 'me-centeredness' and for renewing our commitments to public health and the common good. -- Marcy Darnovsky, executive director, Center for Genetics and Society Dickenson's mapping out of this vital fork in the road is valuable. Publishers Weekly This book is filled with clearly explained, hard science, giving equal treatment to the benefits and problems of personalized medicine... I recommend expending the necessary reading effort not only for healthcare workers but for the general public. New York Journal of Books Dickenson's greatest achievement in this book is that she largely succeeds in creating a coherent, compelling narrative across the five disparate case studies and that she does so incorporating insights from a range of domains including sociology, ethics, philosophy, law and biomedicine. -- Michael Morrison New Genetics and SocietyTable of ContentsPreface 1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewJonathan Kahn's approach offers an airtight analysis of the commoditization of race in pharmaceutical development, and Race in a Bottle should be of interest and deep concern to numerous audiences. -- Ruha Benjamin, Boston University Jonathan Kahn has produced a major and unique contribution, giving readers a 'big picture' understanding of this vital issue by integrating empirically grounded analysis of real controversies into a detailed conceptual roadmap. This is a substantial piece of scholarship and will be of interest to anyone concerned with the escalating, even geometrically expanding use of the concept of race in science and medicine. -- Troy Duster, University of California, Berkeley Jonathan Kahn is the undisputed Hercules Poirot of biomedicine. His unraveling of the nonsense, non-science, and complicated illogic that allowed the vasodilator BiDil to be approved by the FDA exclusively for 'black' patients is as compelling a read as any good mystery. This riveting book details what happens to scientific method when profit motive drives the marketing of a drug to the extent that its curative properties are touted as race-specific-even when they're not. Genetic variation in humans has no correlation to the shifting historical meanings of race, yet pharmaceutical companies continue to force the square peg of social category into the round hole of scientific fact. Race in a Bottle is a brilliant deconstruction of the kinds of thought processes that make for bad policy, bad medicine, and ultimately endanger our health as a species. -- Patricia Williams, Columbia Law School Jonathan Kahn brilliantly exposes the stunning truth behind new race-based medicines: they are driven by market incentives, not scientific evidence. Based on meticulous research and astute analysis, Kahn constructs a gripping, devastating portrait of profit motivating the use of race in genetic research and pharmaceuticals. Race in a Bottle is absolutely essential for understanding why the myth of biological race has reemerged in genomic science and biotechnology and how it is distorting research, damaging pubic health, and undermining justice in our supposedly post-racial society. -- Dorothy Roberts, author of Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-first Century Kahn expertly weaves together the legal and ethical ramifications of continuing to pursue racialized drugs... No background in health sciences or genetics is necessary to understand this work. Library Journal [Race in a Bottle] tackle[s] one of the most important concerns pertaining to race facing our society today... Must-read material. New Scientist An extraordinary book... I highly recommend it. -- Osagie Obasogie BioPolitical Times Mr. Kahn deserves credit for teasing out all the daunting complexities behind these events, including the details of genetic analysis, the perils of racial determinations, and the minutiae of patent law. -- Abigail Zuger, M.D. New York Times Kahn's book should be required reading. At a time when the ties between scientific researchers and the pharmaceutical industry are becoming ever more entangled, Race in a Bottle provides valuable insights into the consequences of these connections for health and health care - and, importantly, for what passes as knowledge. -- Lundy Braun GeneWatch A powerful saga packed with engrossing twists and turns of plot and filled with food for thought and debate on the politics and health implications of racial perception. Midwest Book Review Finely crafted and written. -- Alejandra Suarez PsycCritiques [Kahn] seems as much at home discussing epidemiology and drug marketing as he does the history of US race relations and the intricacies of patenting... Magnificent. -- Dr. Martyn Pickersgill The Biologist A compelling account of a fascinating case. -- Anne Pollock Bulletin of the History of Medicine Race in a Bottle is lucid and energetic, with fascinating and little-known evidence about clinical trials, the federal regulatory and patent systems, and the history of racial classification... Kahn offers a heartfelt and persuasive case against allowing race to be reduced to biology. -- Jennifer L. Hochschild Journal of American History [Kahn] skillfully uses the story of the drug BiDil... as the backdrop for examining the expanding role of race in medical genomics, even when the same science has called the existence of race into serious doubt. -- Aravinda Chakravarti Nature Medicine Highly recommended. Choice [Jonathan Kahn's] rich portrayal of the changing meaning and uses of race in the wake of genomics makes this book a 'must read' and 'must assign' for all sociologists of race and ethnicity. Book SynopsisA leading bioethicist explores the intractable threats to our well-being that persist despite the multigenerational effort to defeat them.Trade ReviewThis book is a wide-ranging, sincere, and syncretic attempt to identify and analyze the greatest threats to the planet today. It is a work of tremendous breadth of vision, with an earnest concern about some of the most serious problems of our time. Callahan is a master of clear communication. -- Donna Dickenson, author of Me Medicine vs. We Medicine: Reclaiming Biotechnology for the Common Good Daniel Callahan's powerful, lucid book offers a sober confrontation with some of the most serious problems facing the world today, asking us to change our ideas of progress to mitigate the catastrophic consequences of how we have come to live. -- Michael Roth, Wesleyan University Callahan, a pioneer in bioethics, has written a thoughtful meditation on our most recalcitrant worldly challenges, from the health of our bodies to the wellbeing of our planet. Well-written and accessible, The Five Horsemen of the Modern World demonstrates how the complex mix of technology, politics, and media have slowed progress and calls for a more productive partnership with sustainable businesses to chart a path forward. -- Paul Sabin, author of The Bet: Paul Ehrlich, Julian Simon and Our Gamble Over Earth's Future Callahan is subtle in expressing his point of view-you never feel like he is pushing an ideology or a single-minded solution at the reader. He lets the data speak first, and then he sets the path. -- Sheldon Krimsky, author of Stem Cell Dialogues: A Philosophical and Scientific Inquiry Into Medical Frontiers Callahan's analysis of the evolution of global problems is instructive and accessible; his use of data, clear and persuasive. A work of impressive scope. -- Steve Cohen, Columbia University It is hard enough to write a wise book on a single major social problem, but Daniel Callahan has written a wise book about five of them, ultimately proposing important suggestions for moving forward.
