Oxford University Press On the Take
Trade Review"A surprisingly bare-knuckled book by one of the last editors-in-chief at the New England Journal of Medicine."--Mother Jones"A temperate but tough look at how big business is corrupting medicine."--Publishers Weekly"An important and thought-provoking analysis of the extensive conflicts of interest that pervade the relationship between pharmaceutical companies and the medical profession. This book is a wake-up call for physicians, policy-makers, and the public." --Senator Edward M. Kennedy"His quiet fury is palpable as he watches his beloved medical profession being corrupted by businesses willing to do whatever it takes to get their drugs prescribed."--American Scientist"From this book's title to its final words...Jerome P. Kassirer slams his fellow physicians.... 'It shouldn't have to be patients' responsibilities to protect themselves against the medical profession,' Kassirer writes. Bravo to that."--Tom Graham, Washington Post Book World"Documents with well-referenced examples, how conflicts of interest, primarily financial in nature, have infiltrated all areas of the profession."--New England Journal of Medicine"On the Take should be required reading for anyone concerned about the future of medicine in this country. Kassirer has shined a much-needed spotlight on the dark underbelly of physicians' financial dealings with industry. He argues compellingly that the corrupting influence of money is now so entrenched that the medical profession alone may not be able to save itself from rank commercialism. Public outrage at the unconscionable practices documented in this book may be our only hope of redirecting the medical profession away from overweening self-interest and back towards its moral purpose--protecting patients' interests. If readers of this book are not outraged at what they learn, hope for a future of beneficent medicine may indeed be lost."--Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., President, Association of American Medical Colleges"Kassirer...has taken on the daunting task of documenting the varied and ingenious ways in which his fellow physicians have managed to accept money and gifts from pharmaceutical companies without calling the practice 'bribery'.... One virtue of this fine book, at least as a muckraking exhibit, is that its author, a physician of the old school, has been around long enough to see a lot of unraked muck.... You have to admire Kassirer's willingness to call a spade a spade."--American Prospect"On the Take describes the web of financial interests that entangles many doctors and threatens their objectivity and professionalism. Equally bad, financial conflicts of interest can undermine public trust in doctors. In this book, Dr. Jerome P. Kassirer diagnoses the malady as systemic, widespread, and insidious. Dr. Kassirer's powerful account will make it hard for anyone to deny that a serious problem exists and demands attention. On the Take deserves to be read by everyone who has a stake in the future integrity of medicine and health care."--Harvey V. Fineberg, President, The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences"Dr. Jerome Kassirer authoritatively describes the emerging immersion of the practice of medicine into the activities of the pharmaceutical and medical device world. As medicine itself has become a big business, the duties of the physician to the patient are in danger of being compromised and subverted. Personal vignettes from the author's experience lend credibility to many of the dangers described. The observations are disturbing and the implications profound." --Joseph B. Martin, M.D., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Harvard University"This important book provides a thoughtful, well-documented, and ultimately devastating exposé of the pervasive relationships between health care corporations, researchers and practicing physicians. Every patient should be familiar with the conflicts of interest that affect the care they receive, and this book explains those conflicts with often frightening clarity. The time has come for full disclosure." --Dr. John W. Rowe, M.D., Chairman and CEO, Aetna, Inc."On the Take paints a disturbing portrait of a medical system twisted by unseen and pernicious conflicts of interest. Dr. Jerome Kassirer writes with the authority of a leader in medicine, with the candor of an advocate who pulls no punches, and with the common sense of a citizen who can smell when something is just not right. I highly recommend this book." --U.S. Representative Henry A. Waxman, California

John Howard and Walter Hess have spent their professional lives as academic pancreatic surgeons. Their book is the culmination of a prodigious effort to bring together a literature that begins with the Greek anatomist and surgeon Herophilus, who first described the pancreas around 300 b.c., and ends with the modern-day physicians and scientists who continue to expand our knowledge of the pancreas. History books can sometimes be a dull catalogue of events. Howard and Hess have made the journey personal with their insights into each investigator and into the ways in which various discoveries were made. Many of these discoveries were not focused efforts to understand the pancreas but observations made serendipitously. We are also treated to glimpses into the lives of many famous people, some of whom are well known for their discoveries outside the study of the pancreas but who also provided new knowledge of the anatomy and function of the pancreas. This well-organized book begins with early observations of the anatomy of the pancreas and accounts of the early experiments conducted to determine its function. We are brought from one of the first descriptions of the pancreas, as a "cushion of the stomach and pad supporting the vessels," to the discovery of the pancreatic duct by Johann Georg Wirsung in 1642. Wirsung made this discovery when he was a medical student in Padua, Italy, where he performed the autopsies before his mentor, Johann Wesling, presented the demonstration-lectures to the public in the anatomy theater. The next year, Wirsung was assassinated. His mentor, Wesling, was accused of the crime, the motive for which was rumored to be jealousy, but was eventually acquitted. Such vignettes add spice to the history of these discoveries and offer insight into the people who had a role in the history of knowledge about the pancreas and the times in which they lived. The studies that led to the determination of the function of the exocrine pancreas include those of Johann Conrad Brunner, who examined the effect of ligation of the pancreatic duct in dogs, the work of others who determined the acidity of pancreatic juice by tasting it, and Tiedemann and Gmelin's identification of the role of pancreatic juice and bile in digestion. Subsequent chapters focus on the history of acute and chronic pancreatitis, the discovery of the pancreatic islets and their relation to diabetes, and the identification of various tumors specific to this gland. The development of interventional approaches is presented in detail, including the first endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in 1965 by Rabinov and Simon, radiologists at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital, and the Whipple procedure in 1934 by Allen Whipple at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. Many medical history books would stop at this point. This book, however, continues the journey into the present, bringing us up to date on contemporary researchers, new surgical procedures including islet-cell transplantation, and recently discovered genes. Although I initially found the size of this textbook daunting, the book is easy to read. This is in part owing to the fascinating portrayal of each of the major players who participated in developing our present understanding of the pancreas. It also reflects the authors' understanding of the history of medicine itself -- especially how discoveries were made before the era of high technology. This book will benefit not only anyone interested in the pancreas and the gastrointestinal tract, but also readers who want insights into the history of medicine." (Steven D. Freedman, M.D., Ph.D. in the New England Journal of Medicine, September 2003) "History Of The Pancreas creates a layered timeline meant to record the major discoveries surrounding the organ … . In sum, this treatise serves to outline the pancreas for clinicians and surgeons who now can use the information to formulate better approaches to patient treatment." Kelley Lee's book is essential reading for those engaged in the debate on globalization.' - Professor Colin McInnes, Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University, UK 'Kelley Lee's new book is an artful introduction to a vexingly complex topic. It usefully defines the globalization territory, pinpoints some of its key landmarks, offers a succinct conceptual model of how its contemporary incarnation might influence health and importantly offers optimism for the future in a debate redolent with despair. Policy makers, researchers and students intrigued by globalization and its discontents, but fearful of being overwhelmed by its vagaries, will find this book an engagingly helpful primer.' - Ronald Labonte, Director of the Saskatchewan Population Health and Evaluation Research Unit, Canada 'Kelley Lee provides a clear-headed and balanced discussion of the content and consequences of globalization. Springer-Verlag New York Inc. Beyond Fear
Book SynopsisMany of us, especially since 9/11, have become personally concerned about issues of security, and this is no surprise. Security is near the top of government and corporate agendas around the globe. Security-related stories appear on the front page everyday. How well though, do any of us truly understand what achieving real security involves? In Beyond Fear, Bruce Schneier invites us to take a critical look at not just the threats to our security, but the ways in which we''re encouraged to think about security by law enforcement agencies, businesses of all shapes and sizes, and our national governments and militaries. Schneier believes we all can and should be better security consumers, and that the trade-offs we make in the name of security - in terms of cash outlays, taxes, inconvenience, and diminished freedoms - should be part of an ongoing negotiation in our personaTrade Review"Does arming pilots make flying safer? Computer security guru Schneier applies his analytical skills to real-world threats like terrorists, hijackers, and counterfeiters. BEYOND FEAR may come across as the dry, meticulous prose of a scientist, but that's actually Schneier's strength. Are you at risk or just afraid? Only by cutting away emotional issues to examine the facts, he says, will we reduce our risks enough to stop being scared." -- Wired "Schneier provides an interesting view of the notion of security, outlining a simple five-step process that can be applied to deliver effective and sensible security decisions. These steps are addressed in detail throughout the book, and applied to various scenarios to show how simple, yet effective they can be....Overall, this book is an entertaining read, written in layman's terms, with a diverse range of examples and anecdotes that reinforce the notion of security as a process." --Computing Reviews "Schneier is a rare creature... Although he made his name as an alpha geek in cryptography... [he] can also speak to laypeople about the general security matters that increasingly touch all of our lives." -- Business Week "Once again Schneier proves that he is the one of few people who indeed understands security, and what is more important and more difficult, can explain complex concepts to people not specializing in security. Whatever your trade and whatever your background, go ahead and read it ..." -- itsecurity.com "In his new book, 'Beyond Fear', Bruce Schneier -- one of the world's leading authorities on security trade-offs -- completes the metamorphosis from cryptographer to pragmatist that began with Secrets and Lies, published in 2000." -- infoworld.comTable of ContentsSensible Security.- All Security Involves Trade-offs.- Security Trade-offs Are Subjective.- Security Trade-offs Depend on Power and Agenda.- How Security Works.- Systems and How They Fail.- Knowing the Attackers.- Attackers Never Change Their Tunes, Just Their Instruments.- Technology Creates Security Imbalances.- Security Is a Weakest-Link Problem.- Brittleness Makes for Bad Security.- Security Revolves Around People.- Detection Works Where Prevention Fails.- Detection Is Useless Without Response.- Identification, Authentication, and Authorization.- All Countermeasures Have Some Value, But No Countermeasure Is Perfect.- Fighting Terrorism.- The Game of Security.- Negotiating for Security.- Security Demystified.

Basic Books Pox Genius Madness and the Mysteries of Syphilis
Book SynopsisFrom Beethoven to Oscar Wilde, from Van Gogh to Hitler, Deborah Hayden throws new light on the effects of syphilis on the lives and works of seminal figures from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries.Writing with remarkable insight and narrative flair, Hayden argues that biographers and historians have vastly underestimated the influence of what Thomas Mann called this exhilarating yet wasting disease. Shrouded in secrecy, syphilis was accompanied by wild euphoria and suicidal depression, megalomania and paranoia, profoundly affecting sufferers'' worldview, their sexual behaviour, and their art. Deeply informed and courageously argued, Pox has been heralded as a major contribution to our understanding of genius, madness, and creativity.

Random House USA Inc Hidden Valley Road
Book Synopsis#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER? OPRAH?S BOOK CLUB PICK ? ONE OF GQ''s TOP 50 BOOKS OF LITERARY JOURNALISM IN THE 21st CENTURY ? The heartrending story of a midcentury American family with twelve children, six of them diagnosed with schizophrenia, that became science''s great hope in the quest to understand the disease. Reads like a medical detective journey and sheds light on a topic so many of us face: mental illness. ?Oprah WinfreyDon and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don''s work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their twelve children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins--aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony--and they worked hard to play their parts. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the ten Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic. How could all this happen to one family? What took place inside the house on Hidden Valley Road was so extraordinary that the Galvins became one of the first families to be studied by the National Institute of Mental Health. Their story offers a shadow history of the science of schizophrenia, from the era of institutionalization, lobotomy, and the schizophrenogenic mother to the search for genetic markers for the disease, always amid profound disagreements about the nature of the illness itself. And unbeknownst to the Galvins, samples of their DNA informed decades of genetic research that continues today, offering paths to treatment, prediction, and even eradication of the disease for future generations. With clarity and compassion, bestselling and award-winning author Robert Kolker uncovers one family''s unforgettable legacy of suffering, love, and hope.

Elana Freeland Geoengineered Transhumanism
Book SynopsisGeoengineered Transhumanism is the third book in Elana Freeland''s trilogy on geoengineering. It completes the picture of what geoengineering has been from its very inception decades ago: to control the ionosphere with phased array heater blasts so as to maintain an ionized atmosphere in which chemicals, nanotechnology, and synbio synergies can be continuously laid by jets, drones, and rockets in the name of climate change. Thus, the groundwork for the synbio (synthetic biology) neural network inside Human 1.0 began by manipulating the macro environment upon which our extraordinary interior micro environment depends. The air we breathe, the soil we grow our food in, the water we must replenish-all have been commandeered by biotech and Big Pharma for Human 2.0 Transhumanism. Chemicals, nanotechnology, and electromagnetics are manipulated for geoengineering, genetics, and vaccinations, all in preparation for the software phase of the brain-computer interface (BCI) we now face after decades of quiet war preparation.
