  • Race in a Bottle

Columbia University Press Race in a Bottle

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewJonathan Kahn's approach offers an airtight analysis of the commoditization of race in pharmaceutical development, and Race in a Bottle should be of interest and deep concern to numerous audiences. -- Ruha Benjamin, Boston University Jonathan Kahn has produced a major and unique contribution, giving readers a 'big picture' understanding of this vital issue by integrating empirically grounded analysis of real controversies into a detailed conceptual roadmap. This is a substantial piece of scholarship and will be of interest to anyone concerned with the escalating, even geometrically expanding use of the concept of race in science and medicine. -- Troy Duster, University of California, Berkeley Jonathan Kahn is the undisputed Hercules Poirot of biomedicine. His unraveling of the nonsense, non-science, and complicated illogic that allowed the vasodilator BiDil to be approved by the FDA exclusively for 'black' patients is as compelling a read as any good mystery. This riveting book details what happens to scientific method when profit motive drives the marketing of a drug to the extent that its curative properties are touted as race-specific-even when they're not. Genetic variation in humans has no correlation to the shifting historical meanings of race, yet pharmaceutical companies continue to force the square peg of social category into the round hole of scientific fact. Race in a Bottle is a brilliant deconstruction of the kinds of thought processes that make for bad policy, bad medicine, and ultimately endanger our health as a species. -- Patricia Williams, Columbia Law School Jonathan Kahn brilliantly exposes the stunning truth behind new race-based medicines: they are driven by market incentives, not scientific evidence. Based on meticulous research and astute analysis, Kahn constructs a gripping, devastating portrait of profit motivating the use of race in genetic research and pharmaceuticals. Race in a Bottle is absolutely essential for understanding why the myth of biological race has reemerged in genomic science and biotechnology and how it is distorting research, damaging pubic health, and undermining justice in our supposedly post-racial society. -- Dorothy Roberts, author of Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-first Century Kahn expertly weaves together the legal and ethical ramifications of continuing to pursue racialized drugs... No background in health sciences or genetics is necessary to understand this work. Library Journal [Race in a Bottle] tackle[s] one of the most important concerns pertaining to race facing our society today... Must-read material. New Scientist An extraordinary book... I highly recommend it. -- Osagie Obasogie BioPolitical Times Mr. Kahn deserves credit for teasing out all the daunting complexities behind these events, including the details of genetic analysis, the perils of racial determinations, and the minutiae of patent law. -- Abigail Zuger, M.D. New York Times Kahn's book should be required reading. At a time when the ties between scientific researchers and the pharmaceutical industry are becoming ever more entangled, Race in a Bottle provides valuable insights into the consequences of these connections for health and health care - and, importantly, for what passes as knowledge. -- Lundy Braun GeneWatch A powerful saga packed with engrossing twists and turns of plot and filled with food for thought and debate on the politics and health implications of racial perception. Midwest Book Review Finely crafted and written. -- Alejandra Suarez PsycCritiques [Kahn] seems as much at home discussing epidemiology and drug marketing as he does the history of US race relations and the intricacies of patenting... Magnificent. -- Dr. Martyn Pickersgill The Biologist A compelling account of a fascinating case. -- Anne Pollock Bulletin of the History of Medicine Race in a Bottle is lucid and energetic, with fascinating and little-known evidence about clinical trials, the federal regulatory and patent systems, and the history of racial classification... Kahn offers a heartfelt and persuasive case against allowing race to be reduced to biology. -- Jennifer L. Hochschild Journal of American History [Kahn] skillfully uses the story of the drug BiDil... as the backdrop for examining the expanding role of race in medical genomics, even when the same science has called the existence of race into serious doubt. -- Aravinda Chakravarti Nature Medicine Highly recommended. Choice [Jonathan Kahn's] rich portrayal of the changing meaning and uses of race in the wake of genomics makes this book a 'must read' and 'must assign' for all sociologists of race and ethnicity. Book SynopsisBecause of rapidly aging populations, the number of people worldwide experiencing dementia is increasing and the projections are grim. This title exposes the predicaments embedded in current efforts to slow down or halt Alzheimer's disease through early detection of presymptomatic biological changes in healthy individuals.Trade ReviewShortlisted for the 2014 Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-Fiction, Quebec Writers' Federation "[T]houghtful ... convincing... Margaret Lock is an extremely sharp critic of the Alzheimer's scene."--W. F. Bynum, Times Literary Supplement "[A] diligent survey of research, literature, conferences, and interviews... Lock proves that the science of the disease is just as compelling as poignant accounts from caregivers and those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Lock highlights just how much we don't know, from problems with Alzheimer's pathology, testing, and diagnosis to the search for a drug treatment... While science plugs away at solving the Alzheimer's conundrum, Lock's call for improved care and social support takes on a new urgency."--Publishers Weekly "[Lock] delivers key concepts in epidemiology, neuroscience and genetics in a way that is both scholarly and free of unnecessary technical details. Lock's bird's-eye view and mix of diverging sources of information is refreshing... For its wide scope and balanced critical evaluation, The Alzheimer Conundrum is an inspiring read for everyone working in the field."--Eus Van Someren, Nature "Comprehensive, cogent, and densely detailed, The Alzheimer Conundrum provides a useful antidote to media hype about 'silver bullets' that are 'just around the corner' and makes an important contribution to our understanding of an achingly tragic disease that touches virtually all of us."--Glenn Altschuler, Psychology Today "The Alzheimer Conundrum: Entanglements of Dementia and Aging is a welcome addition to a body of work that has so productively explored the historical contingencies, cultural specificities, and philosophical dilemmas that surround and shape bodies and people's understandings and inhabitances of them."--Aaron Seaman, Somatosphere "The Alzheimer Conundrum is a gem for young scientists and medical students, and it will challenge them to step back from traditional models, standardised diagnostic procedures and disease specificity to adopt a broader philosophical approach: when is a disease not a disease? ... Lock's rigorous unpacking of research studies and refusal to accept statements and conclusions from research papers at face value result in a thorough and honest appraisal of the current state of the field. It will be a great help in understanding the confusion and conflicting evidence surrounding this highly important topic."--Rose Anne Kenny, Times Higher Education "Lock's empirical account is a very welcome addition to the literature on biomedical uncertainty."--Des Fitzgerald, LSE Review of Books "[W]hether medical researchers or the general reader, this is a meaningful reading."--Liu, Economic Observer (China) "The Alzheimer Conundrum is an engaging read that, while quite granular in its detail, is never dry... Lock clearly summarizes, synthesizes, and critiques the results from research in molecular biology, genetics, neuroimaging, and epidemiology."--Jason Karlawish, Health Affairs "The Alzheimer Conundrum is an eloquently reasoned, provocative work."--Choice "The strength of this book is the in-depth detailing of the limitations of the existing science of Alzheimer's... This book is particularly relevant for researchers in the field of dementia: for those coming from a bio-medical perspective it may help them to be more reflexive about the choices they make in their studies, and for social scientists it may help to further understandings of and potential links with more medically focused research."--Jane Tooke, Journal of Ageing & Society "Lock's book is balanced, brilliant, and inspirational... The sheer travel, research, and organization that went into its creation are beyond impressive. Its lasting contribution is to leave the thoughtful reader in the AD field pondering the notion of a conundrum--after all, riddles abound in many aspects of our lives, always pointing to uncertainty."--Daniel R. George and Peter J. Whitehouse, Culture, Medicine, & Psychiatry "The Alzheimer Conundrum is a provocative account of why Alzheimer's disease (AD) is such a puzzling mix of scientific hypotheses, research agendas, pharmaceutical interests, funding objectives, and theories of aging... A timely critique of the disease model and its cultural consequences. The book's appeal is that it takes readers beyond scientific fields to consider social, historical, and cross-cultural dimensions of AD that broaden conceptual debates about mind and body, nature and nurture, and normal and pathological."--Stephen Katz, Bulletin of the History of MedicineTable of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Orientations 1 Chapter 1 Making and Remaking Alzheimer Disease 26 Chapter 2 Striving to Standardize Alzheimer Disease 51 Chapter 3 Paths to Alzheimer Prevention 76 Chapter 4 Embodied Risk Made Visible 100 Chapter 5 Alzheimer Genes: Biomarkers of Prediction and Prevention 132 Chapter 6 Genome-Wide Association Studies: Back to the Future 156 Chapter 7 Living with Embodied Omens 174 Chapter 8 Chance Untamed and the Return of Fate 207 Chapter 9 Transcending Entrenched Tensions 229 Afterword: Portraits from the Mind 243 Notes 247 Bibliography 277 Index 301

  • Doctors in Canada

University of Toronto Press Doctors in Canada

Book SynopsisThrough the twentieth century, the nature of medical practice has changed more quickly, more dramatically, and far more publicly than that of any other profession in Canada. In this study Bernard Blishen identifies the social and political pressures on the medical profession and assesses how it has responded to them.Among the changes doctors have confronted are third-party pressures from government and hospital bureaucracies, greater public knowledge, improved technology, recognition of patients’ rights, and legal challenges. Blishen discusses how the doctors achieved dominance in the health field, reviews demographic changes within the profession and the larger population, examines data on the changing health status of Canadians, and charts physician supply against patient demand. He finds that the chief source of his profession’s collegial strength has been the homogeneity of its membership. This homogeneity is declining with increasing numbers of women and ethn

It draws on relevant theoretical, research and policy literature but focuses in particular on the evidence base for the value of their work. While orientated towards UK practice, the book includes some comparative material to add a wider European perspective. The text includes discussion of specialist public health nursing roles such as health visiting and school nursing, as well as the contribution of those who have more general nursing roles but whose work brings them into contact with children, young people and their families. This volume will inform all qualified nurses working in acute care and primary care settings who have contact with children, young people and their families. It will also be of use to those undertaking post-qualifying and post-graduate courses and is particularly relevant for Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHNs) many of whom, once qualified, have significant child protection roles in practice.Trade Review‘This book is an interesting addition to the safeguarding literature as it looks specifically at the role of the public health nurse in safeguarding children and preventing abuse. It was developed from a series of papers forming a symposium that was delivered at the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect European regional conference held in 2013. There are a range of expert contributors from the safeguarding and nursing fields. The book provides an overview of safeguarding and child protection, with an outline of current policy and legislation, followed by a series of chapters from a variety of contributing authors considering ideas such as the importance of early detection, international approaches to public health nurses in child protection and the challenges of leading child protection in acute services. The chapter on the health visiting contribution to child protection is particularly useful for all health visitors, but especially those studying health visiting and safeguarding or those leading health visiting or safeguarding services. The chapter gives examples of the contribution of health visiting to safeguarding in all tiers of practice identified in the Health Visitor Implementation Plan. The chapter also discusses recent research and learning from serious case reviews.A clear argument from the book, that is not always highlighted in many texts around safeguarding, is that the health visitor’s role in safeguarding is more than identifying concerns and referring them to appropriate agencies. The authors highlight the vast amount of safeguarding work completed thatis preventive in nature and, as such, is often not seen as being ‘safeguarding’. For example, building early attachments between infants and parents, and increasing an understanding of healthy sexual relationships in young people are both roles of public health nurses that are preventive or an earlyintervention. This highlights the wider and sometimes less tangible public health role in safeguarding; as such, the text is relevant for those involved in the commissioning and design of services, especially during current commissioning changes where the need to articulate the vital role of the health visitor in safeguarding is so important.’ Journal of Health Visiting'An engaging and informative text which would be a valuable purchase for many practitioners, particularly those undertaking specialist community public health nursing courses.' Book SynopsisSince the publication of the third edition in 1997, the World Health Organization (WHO) has printed two major volumes concerning tumours of the thymus, and the authors of this volume collaborated on these books. In the last 10 years, little progress has been made in the study of tumours of the thymus, although a few new subtypes have been reported. The most significant change was the subtyping by the WHO of tumours of the thymus that do not cause constitutional changes. The present volume has adopted the WHO system of classification. For pathologists who are not as familiar with the WHO system, the authors clearly explain and illustrate both the morphologic and histogenetic classification systems that are its bases. Due to the changes in nomenclature, the chapter on thymic epithelial tumors has been considerably revised, although the main diagnostic terms are presented along with the previous conventional morphologic and histogenetic terms. Newly-recognised tumour entities, new cytologic and genetic findings, and recent references have been added, and the tables have been revised to reflect new data on survival, staging, and classification. This volume will be an authoritative reference on mediastinal tumours for years to come.

Book SynopsisThe authors of this volume have put emphasis on diagnosis, so the presentation is generally concise, yet more comprehensive on key points. In addition, they emphasise diagnostically-important information on immunohistochemistry and molecular genetics, and include additional details when biologically significant. Site-specific soft tissue entities covered in the other atlases are often excluded due to space constraints. The text is aimed as a practical diagnostic aid for pathologists, cytopathologists and pathology trainees, but the authors hope that their clinical colleagues and others may also find it as a useful source of information on soft tissue tumours and tumour-like lesions.

Book SynopsisPengelly's user friendly text will encourage educators in medical science to consider using this material in the complementary medicine/nutraceuticals areas May I congratulate Andrew Pengelly for writing this text as it is going to be very popular with undergraduate students as well as more experienced readers.'D. Green, London Metropolitan University, UKThis unique book explains in simple terms the commonly occurring chemical constituents of medicinal plants. The major classes of plant constituents such as phenols, terpenes and polysaccharides, are described both in terms of their chemical structures and their pharmacological activities. Identifying specific chemical compounds provides insights into traditional and clinical use of these herbs, as well as potential for adverse reactions. Features include: * Over 100 diagrams of chemical structures* References to original research studies and clinical trials * References to plants commonly used throughout Europe, North America and Australasia.Written by an experienced herbal practitioner, The Constituents of Medicinal Plants seriously challenges any suggestion that herbal medicine remains untested and unproven, including as it does hundreds of references to original research studies and trials.Designed as an undergraduate text, the first edition of this book became an essential desktop reference for health practitioners, lecturers, researchers, producers and anyone with an interest in how medicinal herbs work. This edition has been extensively revised to incorporate up-to-date research and additional sections, including an expanded introduction to plant molecular structures, and is destined to become a classic in the literature of herbal medicine.Table of ContentsForewordPreface1. Book SynopsisThis accessible primer on health psychology covers the key theories and models of the discipline. Through the use of real-life case studies and examples, it covers a broad range of topics related to the field of health psychology including: health promotion, risky health behaviour and health in healthcare settings. It explains how health psychology serves to not only promote positive health and reduce maladaptive health behaviours, but also support those who are chronically ill.Unlike medicine, health psychology takes a more holistic approach through the interaction of psychological, social and biological factors to improve health. This book outlines the inter-relationship between how we think and feel, our biological systems and the social contexts in which we live. It discusses how belief and attitude can shape behavior, the pivotal role of stress and how we can adjust to chronic illness. • Study Design and Statistical Analysis A Practical Guide for Clinicians

Cambridge University Press Study Design and Statistical Analysis A Practical Guide for Clinicians

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book takes the reader through the entire research process: choosing a question, designing a study, collecting the data, using univariate, bivariate and multivariable analysis, and publishing the results. It does so by using plain language rather than complex derivations and mathematical formulae. It focuses on the nuts and bolts of performing research by asking and answering the most basic questions about doing research studies. Making good use of numerous tables, graphs and tips, this book helps to demystify the process. A generous number of up-to-date examples from the clinical literature give an illustrated and practical account of how to use multivariable analysis.Trade Review'This is not a textbook of statistics. Neither is it accurate to say that it is a mere step-by-step 'how-to' guide. Rather it falls comfortably between the two extremes combining intelligent insight and practical know-how illustrated by plenty of 'real' examples taken from fully referenced published studies. … this book is very well laid out in the sense that it helps the reader to find exactly what is needed with ease. Thus, it is very easy to delve into this book and find what is the right test one needs and with the information provided, be confident of how and why that test is appropriate. … One striking feature of this book is how 'un-mathematical' it appears. It is not a book abounding in statistical equations. Instead, where equations are presented they are worded rather than expressed in the standard (and for some off-putting) algebraic form. This and the explanations that ensue, seek to spark the reader's interest rather than encumber him or her with calculations. In these days when statistical software packages tend to obfuscate as readily as the produce output and when a greater appreciation of what statistics is really about is needed, this book is a particularly welcome aid to those who want to understand what they are doing.'
