Book SynopsisThe book critically examines how concepts such as self-determination, participation, ethics, or dialogue, developed not least by the feminist movement and directed against repression, heteronomy and professional paternalism, have been integrated into new contexts and transformed into new social technologies. Crossing a variety of fields from birthing, genetic counselling, living wills, hospital ethics, to population policies and politics of biomedicine, it shows that medicine and medicine-related policies and practices form crucial arenas of these transformations. What we see emerging is procedural management as a new set of social techniques. With a preface by William Ray Arney.

Book SynopsisThe phenomenon of "cancer villages" has emerged in many parts of rural China, drawing media attention and becoming a fact of social life. However, the relationship between pollution and disease is often hard to discern. Through sociological analysis of several villages with different social and economic structures, the authors offer a comprehensive, historically grounded analysis of the coexistence between the incidence of cancer, environmental pollution and villagers’ lifestyles, as well as the perceptions, claims and responses of different actors. They situate the appearance of "cancer villages" in the context of social, economic and cultural change in China, tracing the evolution of the issue over two decades, and providing deep insights into the complex interactions and trade-offs between economic growth, environmental change and public health.Trade Review"This book is an important contribution to China studies and scholarly research on environmental health. Comprising 10 chapters, several of which were first published in 2013 in Chinese, the publication of this English-language edition provides a detailed and informative collection of reports on collective medical claims about China's rural population living in deteriorating environmental conditions."- Suvi Rautio, The China Journal, Volume 86, July 2021 "Impeccably researched and carefully crafted, this work offers a timely and sobering inquiry into collective claims of victimization associated with polluted water and air in rural China."- Jing Jun, Tsinghua University"Chinese "Cancer Villages" is a meticulously researched and emotionally charged book that makes important advances in the fields of China studies, environmental health, rural sociology and anthropology."- Bryan Tilt, Oregon State UniversityTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisSocial inclusion is a key outcome measure for health intervention and social services initiatives. However, there is currently no universal global measure of social inclusion with proven validity and reliability. This prevents accurate cross-cultural comparisons of the impact of social services and policy changes. To fill this void, the authors describe the theory and development of the Social and Community Opportunities Prole (SCOPE) developed in the United Kingdom as a measure of social inclusion. The SCOPE has since been translated and applied in Hong Kong, Poland, and Brazil with proven success in providing empirical evidence of social inclusion among the general public, persons with mental health issues, and immigrants. The first of its kind, this book presents and compares these studies, moving forward social inclusion research and encouraging adoption in academia and by social service providers. The conclusions will also enlighten policy makers at national, regional, and local levels responsible for designing strategies to improve the well-being of disadvantaged groups in society.Social Inclusion: Theoretical Development and Cross-cultural Measurements is the second book in the Mediated Health Series, which focuses on the effects of media, lifestyle, doctor-patient communication, and the economy on health and aims to help inform medical decisions and enhance the well-being of individuals.Table of Contents Part I Social Inclusion Tools and Standards 1. Book SynopsisSocial and environmental factors have profound impacts on health and diseases across the lifespan. Each year, hundreds of millions of animals are used in biomedical research. Yet many experimental studies utilize animals housed in standard conditions conferring minimal physical, social, and mental stimulation. Lacking appreciation of macroenvironment impacts on physiology and disease risks of the laboratory animals may not only hinder the use of appropriate animal models for human diseases, but also question the validity of preclinical assessments of therapeutic agents. This book summarizes our work on environmental enrichment, a housing condition for laboratory animals, recapitulating an active lifestyle by providing a complex physical, social, and cognitive stimulations. Environmental enrichment exerts a wide range of benefits on energy balance, cancer, immunity, stress, behavior, and healthy aging. One underlying mechanism is the activation of a specific neuroendocrine brain-adipocyte axis with brain-derived neurotrophic factor as the key brain mediator. This book integrates recent discoveries regarding mechanisms, mediators, and biomarkers of environmental enrichment, and discusses its translational potential.By providing a timely review and discussion of murine models, this book should be of interest to basic, translational, and clinical researchers, as well as psychologists, nutrition scientists, and students that have interest in cancer, obesity, aging, and genetic disorders.

Book SynopsisAre painkillers mundane medications safe for use to ease human suffering? Or are they drugs of abuse that cause addiction and death? Do they ameliorate pain, or do they cause it? This book explores growing interest among medical practitioners media outlets about the ‘misuse’ or ‘abuse’ of pharmaceutical pain medications. It contextualizes these emerging discourses of pharmaceutical ‘abuse’ within the social and political histories from which they have emerged by exploring the role of pleasure and pain in shaping individualized modes of medication consumption in a neoliberal age of anxiety. The book is divided into two parts: the first addresses the discursive construction of painkiller (ab)use as articulated in research and policy accounts; the second part provides an empirical investigation that draws on the lived experience of those who engage in non-medical consumption. This book argues that, contrary to the stereotype of the ‘seductive’ drug that coaxes its user into a life of dysfunction, there appears to be an intimate relationship between the motivations of pleasure seeking, health practice and productive citizenship among people who use painkillers for non-medical reasons.Table of ContentsForeword.- Acknowledgements.- Abbreviations.- Drug Glossary.- Preface.- Part One.- 1. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines various aspects of ethnomedicine and tribal healing practices, including its importance for inclusion and integration from a health systems perspective. Tribal healing practices is an under-studied component in healthcare system, health policy and health systems research. The book consists of original research papers based on empirical studies done by anthropologists, sociologists, public health practitioners and research scientists in various parts of India. It discusses issues of non-codified folk healing, with a focus on the therapeutic ideas and practices of tribal communities, located in anthropological theory and methods. It has a balance of empirical papers, review and theoretical papers, not only explaining ‘what is inside the healing practices’ but also touching upon the question of ‘why’ and delving into ‘what should be’ looking into the possibility to apply it for a larger good i.e., health care for all. This book discusses several important issues related to legitimacy, evidence and efficacy, recognition, certification and integration, protection and preservation, bio-piracy and bioprospecting, benefit sharing and intellectual property rights, sustainable use of medicinal herbs and conservation of nature and natural resources, biodiversity and possibilities of mainstreaming tribal healing. It is of interest to students and researchers from medical anthropology, medical sociology, cultural geography, liberal studies, tribal studies, ecology, sustainability and development and public health.Table of ContentsIntroduction Sunita Reddy, Nemthianngai Guite, Bamdev Subedi Section 1: Ethnomedicine and Public Health Perspective in Traditional Medicine 2. Springer Verlag, Singapore Care Staff Mobilisation in the Hospital: Fight or

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book offers a novel examination of the relations, actions, and practices of healthcare workers, analysed in terms of collective mobilisation. Based on successive surveys conducted over a twenty-year period in public and private hospitals, it brings a rich new conceptualisation of both social movements and care work. We’ve all witnessed the collective mobilisation at play in hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic. In such a structured, hierarchical environment, the parallel with social movements highlights the ethical and collective dimensions of care work, as well as the bonds of solidarity and identification with the collective. Yet, healthcare workers are often caught in a dilemma between fighting against underfunding and deteriorating working conditions on the one hand, and cooperating to keep the system standing and provide the best care possible for patients on the other. The author's approach in terms of consensual and conflictual mobilisations brings a fresh theoretical and empirical contribution to the literature on social movements, medical sociology, public health, and the sociology of labour, whilst in-depth case studies bring to light the experiences of healthcare workers and enrich the narrative throughout.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Structural limits and consensual mobilisation.- The roots of healthcare.- Institutional trade unionism.- Alternative models of caring and hesitant practices.- Spontaneous protest.- What if the hospitals were co-managed?.
