Taylor & Francis Ltd British Media and the Rwandan Genocide
Book SynopsisThroughout the 1990s, humanitarian interventionism sat at a crossroads, where ideas about rights and duties within and beyond borders collided with an international reality of civil conflict where the most basic human rights were violated in the most brutal manner. This growing awareness of humanitarian crises has been enabled by a more globalized media which increasingly shapes public perceptions of distant crises, public opinion, and political decision-making. Clarke examines the extent to which the public discourse, and particular concepts, including those of an ethical and legal nature, influenced British newspaper coverage of the 1994 crisis in Rwanda, and, in turn, the extent to which that coverage influenced the British Parliamentâs response to the crisis. Through his development and application of a broader methodological approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative analyses, the book offers a fuller understanding of the relationship between media cTrade Review"...one of the great things about Clarke’s book: he does open a long line of questions for possible future inquiry. Application of his methodology to news coverage of other humanitarian crises may also yield important results. Such findings could change how the media deals with stereotyping, pressuring governments, and perceptions of objectivity." - Samantha Stevens, Concordia University, in the Journal of Communication 2019"...a complex and considered study, which adds much to our understanding of media responses to the Rwandan tragedy and should ultimately become an important read for those with an interest in a variety of related fields. ...scholars with an interest in a variety of fields—media and human rights, international relations, British politics—will find this book to be a worthwhile addition to their library." - David Patrick, The International Journal of Press/Politics."As Clarke emphasizes in his book, the liberal interventionist ideals of the decade he captures may not have endured; nonetheless, this work illustrates the value of methodological research to challenge the historical narratives they wove. Such methodologies could be used to challenge other assumptions or examine falsehoods." - Catherine Bond in African Affairs 2022. Table of ContentsPart IIntroduction1. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Rise of Metacreativity
Book SynopsisThis book brings together history and theory in art and media to examine the effects of artificial intelligence and machine learning in culture, and reflects on the implications of delegating parts of the creative process to AI.In order to understand the complexity of authorship and originality in relation to creativity in contemporary times, Navas combines historical and theoretical premises from different areas of research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences to provide a rich historical and theoretical context that critically reflects on and questions the implications of artificial intelligence and machine learning as an integral part of creative production. As part of this, the book considers how much of postproduction and remix aesthetics in art and media preceded the current rise of metacreativity in relation to artificial intelligence and machine learning, and explores contemporary questions on aesthetics. The book also provides a thorough evaluation of the creTrade Review“[A] must-read text for all those interested in the emerging relationship between AI and art […] placing it within a historical and theoretical framework rooted in our cultural, political, and economic past. Taylor & Francis Ltd Paradoxes of Media and Information Literacy
Book SynopsisParadoxes of Media and Information Literacy contributes to ongoing conversations about control of knowledge and different ways of knowing. It does so by analysing why media and information literacy (MIL) is proposed as a solution for addressing the current information crisis. Questioning why MIL is commonly believed to wield such power, the book throws into sharp relief several paradoxes that are built into common understandings of such literacies. Haider and Sundin take the reader on a journey across different fields of practice, research and policymaking, including librarianship, information studies, teaching and journalism, media and communication and the educational sciences. The authors also consider national information policy proposals and the recommendations of NGOs or international bodies, such as UNESCO and the OECD. Showing that MIL plays an active role in contemporary controversies, such as those on climate change or vaccination, Haider and Sundin argue that sucTrade Review"Questions for a Crisis"; a book review by Barbara Fister can be read here: https://creativelibrarypractice.org/2022/06/22/questions-for-a-crisis/#more-1520 A remarkable book. By clearing conceptual ground, synthesizing policies and debates, formulating challenges and first-hand reflections, the book will stand as a key book for researchers and students dealing with MIL. Ulla Carlsson, Professor, University of Gothenburg, UNESCO Chair on Freedom of Expression, SwedenMedia and information literacies are becoming ever more important for society worldwide. Haider and Sundin provide an original, and insightful analysis, balancing theoretical considerations and practical implications, which will be a valuable and timely resource for anyone researching or teaching in these areasDavid Bawden, Professor, Department of Information Science, City, University of London, UK Haider and Sundin brilliantly explain how a digital culture fraught with fragmentation, emotionalization and distrust turns to media/information literacy. By revealing the invisibility of our information systems, they allow us to ponder the contradictions, assumptions, and unintended consequences of such solutions.Francesca Tripodi, PhD, School of Information and Library Science and senior researcher at the Center for Information, Technology and Public Life, UNC-Chapel Hill, USAOur current epistemic crisis has thrown long-standing contradictions in media and information literacy into high relief. Haider and Sundin identify and illuminate key paradoxes that must be grappled with to reorient our teaching policies and practices. This foundational text is bound to spark fruitful conversations now and for years to come.Barbara Fister, Scholar-in-Residence, Project Information Literacy, USAWith this book Jutta Haider and Olof Sundin contribute cutting-edge insights into the subject of Media and information literacy, indispensable to academics and professionals in the field, essential to policy-makers.Louise Limberg, Professor Emerita, Swedish School of Library and Information Science, University of Borås, SwedenParadoxes of Media and Information Literacy: The Crisis of Information makes an important contribution to the analysis of information and media literacy and embeds these concepts into the wider social and political debate that surround digital culture. Haider and Sundin problematize the idea of responsibility, normativity, temporality, trust and neutrality to challenge the crisis of information in contemporary society.
