  • Wilfrid Laurier University Press Making Feminist Media: Third-Wave Magazines on the Cusp of the Digital Age

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMaking Feminist Media provides new ways of thinking about the vibrant media and craft cultures generated by Riot Grrrl and feminism's third wave. It focuses on a cluster of feminist publications - including BUST, Bitch, HUES, Venus Zine, and Rockrgrl - that began as zines in the 1990s. By tracking their successes and failures, this book provides insight into the politics of feminism's recent past.Making Feminist Media brings together interviews with magazine editors, research from zine archives, and analysis of the advertising, articles, editorials, and letters to the editor found in third-wave feminist magazines. It situates these publications within the long history of feminist publishing in the United States and Canada and argues that third-wave feminist magazines share important continuities and breaks with their historical forerunners. These publishing lineages challenge the still-dominant - and hotly contested - wave metaphor categorization of feminist culture. The stories, struggles, and strategies of these magazines not only represent contemporary feminism, they create and shape feminist cultures. The publications provide a feminist counter-public sphere in which the competing interests of editors, writers, readers, and advertisers can interact. Making Feminist Media argues that reading feminist magazines is far more than the consumption of information or entertainment: it is a profoundly intimate and political activity that shapes how readers understand themselves and each other as feminist thinkers.Trade Review"In her accessible and entertaining Making Feminist Media, Elizabeth Groeneveld brings a nuanced historicizing eye to print magazines in the 90s and 00s. By connecting contemporary zines and magazines to the publishing practices, constraints, and market conditions of the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, Groeneveld illuminates historical continuities that are too often ignored. And with her close readings, she demonstrates that feminist print media--like feminism itself--is always more complicated than as described by others." -- Lisa Jervis, founding editor and publisher of Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop CultureTable of ContentsList of Figures and TablesAcknowledgementsIntroduction: Making Feminist Media: Third-Wave Magazines on the Cusp of the Digital Age PART ONE: HISTORICIZING THIRD-WAVE MAGAZINES 1. • Wilfrid Laurier University Press Music in Range: The Culture of Canadian Campus Radio

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMusic in Range explores the history of Canadian campus radio, highlighting the factors that have shaped its close relationship with local music and culture. The book traces how campus radio practitioners have expanded stations from campus borders to sur-rounding musical and cultural communities by acquiring FM licenses and establishing community-based mandates. The culture of a campus station extends beyond its studio and into the wider community where it is connected to the local music scene within its broadcast range. The book examines campus stations and local music in Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Sackville, NB, and highlights the ways that campus stations - through music-based programming, their operational practices, and the culture under which they operate - produce alternative methods and values for circulating local and independent Canadian artists at a time when ubiquitous commercial media outlets do exactly the opposite. Music in Range sheds light on a radio sector that is an integral component of Canada's musical and cultural fabric and positions campus radio as a worthy site of attention at a time when connectivity and sharing between musicians, music fans, and cultural intermediaries are increasingly shaping our experience of music, radio, and sound.Trade Review[Music in Range] situates campus radio in a wide range of local music scenes in Canada, and it outlines the place, regulation and valorization of this style of radio in Canada's current broadcast mediascape. • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Screening Twilight: Critical Approaches to a Cinematic Phenomenon

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Twilight saga, a series of five films adapted from Stephanie Meyer's four vampire novels, has been a sensation, both at the box office and through the attention it has won from its predominantly teenaged fans. This series has also been the subject of criticism and sometimes derision - often from critics and on occasion even from fans. However, it also offers rich opportunities for analytic and critical attention, which the contributors to Screening Twilight demonstrate with energy and style. Through examining Twilight, the book unpacks how this popular group of films work as cinematic texts, what they have to say about cinema and culture today, and how fans may seek to re-read or subvert these messages. The chapters addressTwilight in the context of the vampire and myth, in terms of genre and reception, identity, gender and sexuality, and through re-viewing the series fandom. Screening Twilight is also a revelation of how a popular cinematic phenomenon like Twilight rewards close attention from contemporary critical scholars of cinema and culture.Trade Review'Harman and Clayton have gathered together a dynamic mix of writers who tackle the series in all its complexities [ - ] This book is a must-read.' • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Working in the Global Film and Television Industries: Creativity, Systems, Space, Patronage

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisLike many other cultural commodities, films and TV shows tend to work in such a way as to obscure the conditions under which they are produced, a process that has been reinforced by dominant trends in the practice of Film and Television Studies. This collection places the workplace experiences of industry workers at centre stage. It looks at film and television production in a variety of social, economic, political, and cultural contexts. The book provides detailed analyses of specific systems of production and their role in shaping the experience of work, whilst also engaging with the key theoretical and methodological questions involved in film and television production. Drawing together the work of historians, film scholars, and anthropologists, it looks at film and television production not only in Hollywood and Western Europe but also in less familiar settings such as the Soviet Union, India, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chronologically wide-ranging, interdisciplinary and international in scope, it is a unique introduction, critical for all students of the film industries and film production.Trade ReviewWe live in a world where work is often about relations between people and place, and about creating an identity. More than that, hidden behind the scenes of the structures within which workers operate are real-life stories that offer unique insights into what the way we work says about our society. That is why I am fascinated by this important book...This book offers a valuable contribution to our reflections on social justice issues and change in work for readers in media and film studies, cinema history, and work and labour studies. One of the many strengths of the text is that it offers revealing and often surprising snapshots of the kinds of politics, restrictions, constraints and pressures under which various workers have had to operate, and that they must delicately navigate...Overall, the collection encourages the reader to reflect on the kind of world in which professionals in creative industries have worked, and invigorates questions about the kind of world in which we might want to work and live. -- Sheree K. Gregory, Swinburne Institute for Social Research * Media International Australia *There is an absence of work in the literature [on film and television] as a whole that would give voice to the crafts and technical trades whose arcane job titles (focus puller, matte painter or dolly grip) cinema goers glimpse fleetingly as the credits roll. The importance of this text is that it makes a contribution towards filling this gap . . . This is a welcome contribution to the literature on work in film and television production, indeed on work in the creative industries more broadly, offering a grounded and empirically informed insight into production cultures that have been ignored, or arguably worse, hyped as glamorous. -- Keith Randle, University of Hertfordshire, UK * Work, Employment & Society *Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION Andrew Dawson and Sean Holmes, "Working in Film and Television" PART ONE: SYSTEMS OF PRODUCTION 1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisGilbert Simondon: Information, Technology and Media is a comprehensive introduction to the work of the French philosopher Gilbert Simondon. In particular it examines Simondon's original informational ontology, as developed from a synthesis of Cybernetics, thermodynamics and French epistemology, The book goes on to delineate the role this ontology plays in developing an original account of individuation in the physical, biological and psycho-social regimes. This is done, in part, through reading Simondon with and against other figures in these fields such as Merleau-Ponty and Stuart Kauffman. Additionally, Mills explores Simondon's contribution to epistemology and invention, including an analysis of his important theories of the image-cycle and transindividuality. He also examines Simondon's influence on several contemporary thinkers, including Bernard Stiegler and Bruno Latour, before exploring the relevance of Simondon's work for theorising contemporary media technology.Trade ReviewThe object of this remarkable book is as clear as it is relevant —to provide the English-speaking readership with a complete and objective presentation of Gilbert Simondon’s philosophy of individuation and technology. Gilbert Simondon: Information, Technology and Media is a truly innovative study, which shows how to rethink the concept of information in an increasingly complex socio-technological system. -- Vincent K. Bontems, Director of the Atelier SimondonSimon Mills’s book is a timely and valuable introduction to Gilbert Simondon’s theory of information and individuation. Despite the fact that Simondon’s philosophy is steadily gaining more attention and recognition worldwide, English translations have been slow in coming; this book thus fills a gap in the Anglophone scholarship and will surely be a helpful English resource for those interested in understanding Simondonian concepts and the significance of Simondon’s thought for Continental Philosophy and Media Studies. -- Nandita Biswas Mellamphy, Associate Professor of Poitical Science, Western UniversityTable of ContentsAcknowledgements / Introduction / 1. Book SynopsisMedia Relations and the Modern First Lady: From Jacqueline Kennedy to Melania Trump examines the communication strategies first ladies and their teams have used to manage press and public interest in their private lives, to promote causes close to their hearts, and to shape their public image. Starting with Jacqueline Kennedy, who was the first to have a staffer with the title “press secretary,” each chapter explores the relationship between a first lady and the media, the role played by her press secretary and communication staff in cultivating this relationship, and the first lady’s media coverage. Contributors exploring the following questions: How effective were the media relations and communication strategies of this first lady and her team? What worked and what did not? Was the first lady a communication asset to her husband's administration? And what can we learn from their media relations strategies? Along with contributing to the scholarship on presidential spouses, the contributions to this volume also highlight the important role media relations plays in strategic political communication. Scholars of communication, media studies, gender and women’s studies, political science, and public relations will find this book particularly useful.Trade ReviewWhile every political strategist should add this to their reading list, this book is also a must-read for the D.C. political press to look in the mirror at its own problematic coverage that has persisted over centuries. Burns lays out significant and clear arguments as to why studying first ladies and their media relations matter. . . . Overall, Burns has done a masterful job with the editing throughout and wisely notes lessons provided also apply to future first gentlemen. For those who need a cheat sheet, Alison Novak’s conclusion spells out step-by-step what first ladies need to do to master media relations and should be taped to every office door in the East Wing. Excellently primary sourced through the connections of the team, this effective and enjoyable book has a shelf life that will benefit politicos for decades to come. * Journalism History *Notable first lady scholar Lisa M. Burns is back with an impressive collection of essays from leading scholars in Media Relations and the Modern First Lady: From Jacqueline Kennedy to Melania Trump. As the roles of women have changed in society since the 1960s, and media has changed too, the complexity and pace with which the media reports on our first ladies is notable. Why do first lady media relations matter? This book demonstrates the importance of astute media relations and how each woman must navigate her unique time in the spousal spotlight while the whole world is watching. -- Nichola D. Gutgold, Penn State UniversityThis comprehensive examination of modern first ladies’ media relations strategies offers both biographical sketches and analyses of the ways in which U.S. presidential spouses have interacted with the press. It is a welcome addition to scholarship on presidential spouses, and underscores how the U.S. presidency is a partnership choreographed for a mediated stage. Media Relations and the Modern First Lady documents the professionalization of the first spouse’s press office, as well as the increasing complexity of political media management in journalistic, televisual, digital, and social media contexts. Students and scholars of the U.S. presidency and presidential spouses, journalism and public relations, and political media management would benefit from reading this book. -- Karrin Anderson, Colorado State UniversityTable of ContentsIntroduction: Why Do First Lady Media Relations Matter? 15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the current day and age, objective facts have less influence on opinions and decisions than personal emotions and beliefs. Many individuals rely on their social networks to gather information thanks to social media's ability to share information rapidly and over a much greater geographic range. However, this creates an overall false balance as people tend to seek out information that is compatible with their existing views and values. They deliberately seek out "facts" and data that specifically support their conclusions and classify any information that contradicts their beliefs as "false news."Navigating Fake News, Alternative Facts, and Misinformation in a Post-Truth World is a collection of innovative research on human and automated methods to deter the spread of misinformation online, such as legal or policy changes, information literacy workshops, and algorithms that can detect fake news dissemination patterns in social media. While highlighting topics including source credibility, share culture, and media literacy, this book is ideally designed for social media managers, technology and software developers, IT specialists, educators, columnists, writers, editors, journalists, broadcasters, newscasters, researchers, policymakers, and students.

Book SynopsisThis interdisciplinary collection of essays explores the impact of media, emerging technologies, and education on the resilience of the so-called post-truth society. This book explores if a return to civic participation, enhanced critical media literacy, journalism for the public good, techno-interventions and lifelong learning systems can collectively foster a more engaged global citizenry. The post-truth society is associated with a raft of terms that challenge the very notion of what should constitute a democratic and inclusive society: the decline and fall of reason; the disruption of the public sphere; the spread of misleading information; fake news; culture wars; the rise of subjectivity; the co-opting of language; filters, silos and tribes; attention deficits; trolls, polarisation and hyper-partisanship; the conversion of popularity into legitimacy; manipulation by "populist"; leaders, governments, and fringe actors; algorithmic control, targeted messaging and native advertising; surveillance and platform capitalism. The contributions from scholars, technologists, policy-makers and activists raise critical questions about the nature and power of knowledge in the 21st century. Readers are challenged to question their own role in perpetuating certain narratives and to also understand the lived context of people on all sides of a given debate. The diverse perspectives by geography, sector, gender and world-views will widen the appeal of this work to an international audience trying to understand the resilience of the post-truth society.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisWhile much attention has been paid to the making of Paris in the work of writers and artists, little is known about the city as defined and created by the fashion media. Filling this gap in studies of the French capital, this original and illuminating book focuses on how the French fashion press - with its rich conjunction of words and images - has been able to construct Paris as a leading world fashion city.Based in an original analysis of fashion writing and images in contemporary French fashion magazines and newspapers, the book shows how the fashion media have been central to the consecration of the city of Paris on the fashion map, as well as its celebration in the collective imaginary. Agnes Rocamora explores, for example, the figures of 'la Parisienne' and 'la passante' (the female passer by), and the presence of the Eiffel tower in fashion visuals. She gives attention to the continuum between the French journalistic discourse and that of cultural forms such as films, paintings and literature, thus revealing the persistence across texts and time of visions of Paris and shedding light on the production and reproduction of the Paris myth.Table of ContentsContents Acknowledgements Introduction Part I Chapter 1: Paris, France Chapter 2: Paris, Fashion City Chapter 3: Fashion Discourse Part II Chapter 4: Paris, 'Capital de la Mode' Chapter 5: 'La Parisienne' in 'Vogue' Chapter 6: 'Passante de Mode' Chapter 7: The Eiffel Tower in Fashion Conclusion Bibliography Index

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDigital Broadcasting presents an introduction to how the classic notion of ‘broadcasting’ has evolved and is being reinterpreted in an age of digitization and convergence. The book argues that ‘digital broadcasting’ is not a contradiction in terms, but—on the contrary—both terms presuppose and need each other. Drawing upon an interdisciplinary and international field of research and theory, it looks at current developments in television and radio broadcasting on the level of regulation and policy, industries and economics, production and content, and audience and consumption practices.Trade ReviewA concise but wide-ranging introduction to the changes in broadcasting associated with digitization ... [and] an excellent starting point for discussions with students. * International Journal of Digital Television *This accessible, incisive and well-structured book cleverly summarizes and synthesizes key debates around 'broadcasting' in a digital age. * Niki Strange, Research Fellow in Media Studies, University of Sussex, UK, and founder of Strange Digital *Digital Broadcasting provides a much needed comprehensive overview of a rapidly evolving television landscape. Finally, here is a book that lucidly explains the technical and economic aspects of digital broadcasting, but also pays attention to the changing dynamics between producers, audiences and the industry. Jo Pierson and Joke Bauwens have a keen eye for complexity but are doing students (and lecturers) a great service by providing so many clarifying examples. I greatly recommend this books to all students in media and communication. * José van Dijck, Professor of Media Studies, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and author of The Culture of Connectivity. A Critical History of Social Media *This is a welcome, timely and extremely accessible account on digital broadcasting. Based on their detailed knowledge of the field, Pierson and Bauwen have written an impressive book, placing digital broadcasting in an interdisciplinary and international analytic framework, providing an up-to-date critical analysis of the evidence so far and the prospects of digital broadcasting. The authors examine digital broadcasting as a multifaceted issue, delving into technological, political, economic, social and cultural developments and assessing the implications for the processes of production, distribution, consumption and use. The book is required reading for students, policy makers, media professionals and citizens concerned about media evolutions and changes in broadcast media. * Maria Michalis, Reader in Communication Policy, University of Westminster, UK *Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: A Short History of Broadcasting Chapter 3: The Broadcasting Industry Chapter 4: Production in the Digital Era Chapter 5: Channels in the Digital Era Chapter 6: Audiences in the Digital Era Chapter 7: Rethinking Digital Broadcasting and New Media

Book SynopsisThis innovative book is about the place of world cinema in the cultural imaginary. It also repositions world cinema in a wider discursive space than is usually the case and treats it as an object of theoretical enquiry, rather than as a commercial label. The editors and distinguished group of contributors offer a range of approaches and case studies whose organizing principle is the developing idea of polycentrism as applied to cinema. They refine and redefine key concepts in film studies, including identification and identity, narrative and realism, allegory and the national project, auteurism and the popular, art and genre. They re-evaluate how cinema shapes and responds to the philosophical, cultural and political effects of transnationalism and cosmopolitanism in the age of the moving image, and explore the interconnectedness of films produced worldwide, as well as the links between cinema and other visual cultural forms. • The Political Economies of Media: The Transformation of the Global Media Industries

Book SynopsisThis book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Some advocates and more than a few critics have misconstrued the political economy of media as a unified field of inquiry. The authors from this volume, by contrast, draw from a more diverse stream of the schools of thought signified by this tradition: Neoclassical Economics, Radical Media Political Economy, Schumpeterian Institutional Political Economy, and the Cultural Industries School. The book as a whole is as alert to developments in our main objects of analysis - media institutions, technologies, markets, uses and society - as it is to changes in the world around us, including current trends in communication and media studies. The contributors show that digital media are disrupting entire media industries, but without erasing the past. Throughout, the impact of the unprecedented wave of media consolidation in the late-1990s and the financial crisis of the past few years loom large. The authors also suggest that there is no 'supra logic' of 'total system integration' that spans the network media, while insisting that one media sector is not the same as the next. Social networking activities often beg, pilfer and borrow 'content' from 'traditional media', but it remains the case that Time Warner, Comcast, the BBC and News Corp. are very different creatures than Apple, Baidu, Facebook or Google. In other words, even in the age of convergence and remix culture, different media continue to display their own distinctive political economies, as the volume's title - The Political Economies of Media - signals.Trade ReviewThe Political Economies of Media is the most thoughtful, original and compelling set of essays on contemporary global media industries that I have ever read. Dwayne Winseck and Dal Yong Jin are to be congratulated for shepherding and contributing to this crucial contribution to media studies. It should be mandatory reading for scholars, studentts and concerned citizens * Robert W. McChesny, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign *Winseck and Jin's excellent collection is one of the most important contributions in years to research and teaching in media industries. * David Hesmondhalgh, University of Leeds *This excellent book analyzes how the forces of digitalization, financialization, globalization, and consolidation affect today's media. In a world full of clarion calls, The Political Economies of Media stands out as essential reading: thoughtful interpretations in a well-organized volume, timely and useful information, a wide coverage of industries and countries, a highlighting of the diversity within political economy, and a willingness to question conventional wisdom when warranted by the data. * Eli Noam, Columbia Business School and Columbia Insitute for Tele-Information *Political Economies of the Media: The Transformation of the Global Media is probably one of the most inspiring books in political economy I have read in recent years. A wide variety of topical issues is debated and statements are underpinned by an impressive amount of empirical data... This book is a must-read for everyone interested in the structural mechanisms underlying power and control in the media and information industries. -- Tom Evens, Ghent University * Journal of Digital Television *Table of ContentsList of Figures List of Tables List of Contributors Preface Acknowledgments Part One: Introductory Essay 1 The Political Economies of Media and the Transformation of the Global Media Industries: An Introductory Essay 3 Dwayne Winseck, Carleton University Part Two: From the Singular to the Plural-Theorizing the Digital and Networked Media Industries in the Twenty-First Century Principal ongoing mutations of Cultural and Informational Industries Bernand Miège, Carleton University Media Ownership, Oligarchies, and Globalization: Media Concentration in South America Guillermo Mastrini and Martín Becerra, University of Buenos Aires Media as Creative Industries: Conglomeration and Globalization as Accumulation Strategies in an Age of Digital Media Terry Flew, Queensland University of Technology The Structure and Dynamics of Communications Business Networks in an Era of Convergence: Mapping the Global Networks of the Information Business Amelia Arsenault, Annenberg School, University of Pennsylvania Part Three The Conquest of Capital or Creative Gales of Destruction? Book SynopsisThe modern family is under strain. What we crave most from our families is intimacy, warmth and self-fulfilment but we often find this difficult to achieve. We hold onto these expectations of our families even in the face of contradictory experiences, so the family sustains a double life. The authors explore the gap between our values, expectations and yearnings, and our experiences of everyday family life. Family ritual, political rhetoric, advertising images and television family sitcoms are all windows onto what we want and expect - our myths of the family. Yet our aspirations for intimacy and self-fulfilment are frustrated by unacknowledged inequalities between men and women, and parents and children. The inequalities have their origins in the division of domestic labour and in labour markets that disregard family responsibilities. The Double Life Of The Family argues that our expectations of family life are more powerful than is usually believed and have enormous influence on both the way governments structure social policy and on the decisions made by ordinary people.

  • Waterside Press Looking for Laura: Public Criminology and Hot News

Book SynopsisDavid Wilson is one of the UK's best-known and most innovative criminologists. This thought-provoking book stems from the author's parallel experiences in the public eye - as a reporter for Sky News and contributor to BBC, ITV and both national and local newspapers and magazines, especially in relation to high profile cases and fast-moving events in the field of crime and punishment. 'Looking for Laura' provides a window through which to appreciate the media pressures that this can create even for a professor in this field and former prison governor with considerable experience of working with offenders who hit the headlines. The book also looks at the way in which crime is packaged and presented for consumption by a news-hungry public. By considering a range of media situations in which the author has been involved, it provides an absorbing context within which to understand the still relatively new field of public criminology. It has a Foreword by the award-winning investigative journalist Donal MacIntyreTrade Review'This significant contribution to criminological studies offers a text where both scholar and common reader can understand the issues regarding crime reporting and society... while the term "public criminology" has recently gained popularity, it can convincingly be argued that Wilson was a public criminologist before it was in vogue': Howard Journal of Criminal Justice. 'Full of observations and insights that reward careful reading, but more than a source of reflection, it is also an attempt to inspire, incite and provoke criminologists into action': Prison Service Journal 'A provocative, readable and interesting text that straddles several areas of criminological theory and specialism, but strikes first and foremost as a stimulating read and a book which makes you think more about public criminology. What it should be and whether and how it should be undertaken. For that reason it should be one of those at the forefront of debate on academic criminology's function and purpose and I hope it enjoys a sufficient readership and acts to re-invigorate and stimulate future debates about the role and function of "public criminology"': Probation Journal 'An excellent addition for those students studying subjects with a focus on cultural criminology. An interesting and engrossing text and an excellent addition for the discipline': Paul Taylor, University of Chester 'An inspiring and intelligent read': Donal MacIntyre (from the Foreword).
