  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Mathematical and Numerical Modeling in Porous

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisPorous media are broadly found in nature and their study is of high relevance in our present lives. In geosciences porous media research is fundamental in applications to aquifers, mineral mines, contaminant transport, soil remediation, waste storage, oil recovery and geothermal energy deposits. Despite their importance, there is as yet no complete understanding of the physical processes involved in fluid flow and transport. This fact can be attributed to the complexity of the phenomena which include multicomponent fluids, multiphasic flow and rock-fluid interactions. Since its formulation in 1856, Darcyâs law has been generalized to describe multi-phase compressible fluid flow through anisotropic and heterogeneous porous and fractured rocks. Due to the scarcity of information, a high degree of uncertainty on the porous medium properties is commonly present. Contributions to the knowledge of modeling flow and transport, as well as to the characterization of porous media at field scale are of great relevance. This book addresses several of these issues, treated with a variety of methodologies grouped into four parts:I Fundamental conceptsII Flow and transportIII Statistical and stochastic characterizationIV WavesThe problems analyzed in this book cover diverse length scales that range from small rock samples to field-size porous formations. They belong to the most active areas of research in porous media with applications in geosciences developed by diverse authors. This book was written for a broad audience with a prior and basic knowledge of porous media. The book is addressed to a wide readership, and it will be useful not only as an authoritative textbook for undergraduate and graduate students but also as a reference source for professionals including geoscientists, hydrogeologists, geophysicists, engineers, applied mathematicians and others working on porous media.Table of ContentsSection 1: Fundamental concepts Section 2: Flow and transport Section 3: Statistical and stochastic characterization Section 4: Waves

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Six Simple Twists

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis new edition of Six Simple Twists: The Pleat Pattern Approach to Origami Tessellation Design introduces an innovative pleat pattern technique for origami designs that is easily accessible to anyone who enjoys the geometry of paper. The book begins with six basic forms meant to ease the reader into the style, and then systematically scaffolds the instructions to build a strong understanding of the techniques, leading to instructions on a limitless number of patterns. It then describes a process of designing additional building blocks. At the end, what emerges is a fascinating artform that will enrich folders for many years. Unlike standard, project-based origami books, Six Simple Twists focuses on how to design, rather than construct. In this thoroughly updated second edition, the book explores new techniques and example tessellations, with full-page images, and mathematical analysis of the patterns. A reader will, through practice, gain the abiTrade Review"The second edition of Six Simple Twists is a marvelous expansion of the original; like the first edition it provides an introduction to the vast, wide world of origami twist tessellations, with a focus on those based on a hexagonal grid. Through copious and detailed photographs, he shows not just the structure, but how individual folds are actuated, and then how they may be combined in beautiful ways. An expanded selection of photographs of works by worldwide artists provides both inspiration and challenge for the budding tessellator and experienced artist alike."– Robert Lang, author of Origami Design Secrets: Mathematical Methods for an Ancient Art"In this wonderfully expanded new edition, Ben Parker not only describes the basic elements composing his intricate pleated paper artworks, he also unlocks their secrets and logic and teaches their molecules and several examples in a clear format, allowing the reader to create new folded patterns, through both practical and technical approaches!"– Alessandro Beber, author of Origami New Worlds"This new edition of Six Simple Twists is a tremendous expansion of the first edition. Through the thorough investigation of the foundational elements of origami tessellation, Ben has laid the groundwork for understanding design and application of geometry in paper. The second edition expands and refines the insights of the first with copious illustrations and examples, clear definitions and thought provoking exercises. For anyone fascinated by the geometry of origami, or even curious about place of origami in the field of geometry, this edition is absolutely necessary."– Joel Cooper, Origami artist"Ben's second edition is full to the brim with new and exciting insights into the craft and mechanisms of origami tessellations, extending the first edition by a couple hundred pages. He provides extensive explanations and deep insights into the maths behind the scenes and accompanies it with a plethora of projects for you to fold at home."– Peter Keller, Origami artist"As soon as we open the pages of this book, Benjamin DiLeonardo-Parker’s enthusiasm for the design and creation of origami tessellations is clear. The author reveals the patterns that can be formed by paper pleats and their combinations and demonstrates how by folding paper in different configurations the beautiful structures known as origami tessellations can be constructed. The author explains to his readers how to fold tessellations and encourages them to apply their learning to explore the subject to generate their own folding techniques and create their own designs, offering case studies to experiment with. The book is generously supplied with photographs and diagrams illustrating each step of the techniques, and a comprehensive glossary is provided. The author’s creativity and attention to detail are a delight. This second edition is a greatly expanded version of its predecessor [1], benefiting from more instruction in basic skills and pleat manipulation methods, enhanced illustration of the processes, a greater range of demonstrated patterns, an improved notation system, and further mathematical analysis of the behaviour of twists.[. . .] The thorough, detailed, methodical treatment of this subject will surely inspire readers of this book to try out the techniques for themselves, and to embark upon creating many of the tessellations described here, and, with experience gained, even attempting their own tessellation designs. I certainly feel encouraged to reach for some paper and get folding."– Dorothy Leddy, London Mathematical SocietyTable of ContentsPart I1.00 - Why Study Pleat Patterns?1.01 - Basics and Preparation1.02 - How Pleat Patterns Differ from Traditional Origami1.03 - How to Read the Diagrams and Fold Parity1.04 - Folding Uniform Parallel Creases1.05 - Grid Axes and How to Fold a Hexagon1.06 - How to Fold a Triangle Grid1.07 - Simple Pleat1.08 - The Six Simple Twists1.09 - Triangle Twist1.10 - Triangle Spread1.11 - Hex Twist1.12 - Hex Spread1.13 - Rhombic Twist1.14 - Arrow Twist1.15 - Anatomy of a Molecule1.16 - Pleat Intersection NotationPart II2.00 - How to Use the Six Simple Twists2.01 - 32nd’s Grid2.02 - Locking and Unlocking Pleats2.03 - Triangle Twist Tessellation2.04 - 3.6.3.6 Tessellation2.05 - Tessellation Basics2.06 - Applying Tessellation Knowledge Folding2.07 - Triangle Weave Tessellation2.08 - 3.6.3.6 Weave Tessellation2.09 - 6.6.6 Hexagonal Failing Cluster2.10 - Modifications2.11 - Backtwisting2.12 - Twist Handedness and Pleat Symmetry2.13 - Pleat Flattening2.14 - Triangle Twist Tessellation with Flattened Pleats2.15 - Hidden Circles Pattern2.16 - Rhombic Twist Tessellation2.17 - Rhombic Twist Variants2.18 - Twist Sinking2.19 - Twist Expansion2.20 - Nub Offset Tessellation2.21 - Shift Rosette Tessellation2.22 - Ridge Creation2.23 - Button Molecule 2.24 - Button Molecule Tessellation2.25 - Triangle Flagstone Tessellation and Offsetting Pleats2.26 - 3.6.3.6 Flagstone Tessellation2.27 - Crooked Split2.28 - Snowflake Tessellation2.29 - Tulip Split2.30 - Tulip Split Tessellation2.31 - Molecule Size and Different Grid Densities2.32 - “Front” and “Back” Sides2.33 - Tendril Tessellation2.34 - Inverting a Pleat2.35 - Iso-Area Triangle Twist Tessellation2.36. - Pleat Pushing2.37 - Platform Tess2.38 - Triple Twist TessPart III3.00 - Pleat Patterns as Artwork3.01 - Gallery3.02 - Pleat-to-Molecule Analysis3.03 - Twist Archetype Sets3.04 - Molecule Database3.05 - Archetype Composition3.06 - Actions and Notation3.07 - Splitting Equation3.08 - Normal Polygon Models3.09 - Circle Cutout Model3.10 - Molecule-to-Pleat Analysis3.11 - Sectioning Model of Perfect Twist Design3.12 - Brocard PointsFinal thoughtsPleat Notation Thoughts By Matthew BenetGlossary

  • Cambridge University Press Wind Stress over the Ocean

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisUnderstanding wind stress (drag) over the ocean is central to many facets of air-sea interaction, which in turn is vital for models of weather prediction and climate modelling. Wind Stress over the Ocean, first published in 2001, brings together thirty of the world's leading experts in air-sea interaction, under the auspices of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research. Wind Stress over the Ocean provides a thorough re-examination of the physical processes that transfer momentum between the atmosphere and the ocean. As well as describing the established fundamentals, the book also explores active areas of research and controversy. The book will form a comprehensive guide and reference for researchers and graduate students in physical oceanography, meteorology, fluid dynamics and coastal engineering.Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: '… helpful and handy for people who want timely, authoritative information about the different processes that affect the wind stress over the sea.'
