Book SynopsisThe Comprehensive Guide to Bare-Knuckle Boxing TechniquesMartial artists David Lindholm and Ulf Karlsson present this practical guide to learning and effectively applying the classic combative skill of bare-knuckle boxing in real-world situations. This age-old fighting practice, also known as pugilism, began long ago in Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire and developed over time into a precursor to the modern sport of boxing. Lindholm and Karlsson discuss the differences between the bare-knuckle approaches used by various historical teachers, and provide useful technical instruction on how to implement the strategies yourself. They cover stances, strikes, punches, kicks, counters, throws, and avoidance as well as essential components of training and conditioning. Studying these time-tested techniques and carefully practicing the patterns will allow you strike hard yet still protect your ungloved hands, and be able to do so in a variety of conditions and scenarios. The Bare-Knuckle Boxer''s Companion is illustrated with hundreds of pictures depicting classical actions and poses, and is also rounded out with a superb bibliography of recommended historical source texts. This valuable guide is a must-have resource for any modern-day self-defense student, from beginners to experienced martial artists, as well as anyone interested in the history of fighting and boxing. This book is also available from Echo Point Books in hardcover (ISBN 1648370985).

Book Synopsis? This book, by the man who taught them, shows how the British Commandos fought in the Second World War in unarmed hand-to hand combat. It shows how they won their fights – even against enemies who were bigger, stronger, and armed. Brute strength is not required. This book shows you how to put a thug out of action with your bare hands, so fast he won’t know what’s hit him. “Get Tough” is filled with clear, graphic line drawings which, with the easy-to-follow directions, demonstrate the “Fairbairn System”. The author, Major W. E. Fairbairn, was a tough Police officer who spent 30 years with the Shanghai Municipal Police, where he learned ju-jitsu (Judo), Chinese boxing and other martial arts. He was senior instructor to British Special Forces during the war, and was the co-inventor of the legendary Sykes-Fairbairn Commando knife. While in China he became the first foreigner, living outside Japan, ever admitted to Kodokan Jiu-Jutsu University in Tokyo where he was awarded the black belt, second degree. Combining all the knowledge thus acquired he developed a system that stopped the Shanghai terrorists in their tracks, demoralised the Nazis, and probably proved a decisive factor in the success of Allied Special forces in World War Two. This is a “must” book for the armed forces, civilian defence groups, police, security guards, and indeed anyone whose life may be threatened.

Book SynopsisIn 1789, King Chongjo, ruler of the Yi dynasty, ordered General Yi Duk-moo to compile an official textbook on all martial art forms present in Korea. The result, the Muye Dobo Tongji, is the only surviving classical text on the Korean arts of war. Based on the earliest known Korean martial arts treatise, the Muye Chebo(1599), the Muye Dobo Tongji clearly shows the influence of neighboring Japanese and Chinese armies.Through hundreds of wars and invasions, Korean soldiers adapted battlefield skills and tactics from their enemies, creating a unique system. Organized into 24 disciplines comprised of empty hand fighting, weaponry and horsemanship, this is an accurate historical snapshot of the warrior arts of the late 18th century. This marks the first time this volume is available in English.Carefully translated from the original text and illustrated with reproductions of ancient woodblock carvings, this book provides fascinating insights into Korea''s martial arts legacy.

Book SynopsisHe ? said, Go and wrestle him. So, I took him down and thus he ? thus permitted me to join the mission. - Samurah ibn Jundub (Companion of the Messenger of God ?)Sport has been a hallmark of every culture throughout history, and Islamic civilisation was no exception. At the time of the Messenger of God ?, noble arts such as Archery, Swordsmanship, Equitation and Wrestling were the established sports of the day. But how were these sports practised and what purpose did they serve? What emphasis does Islam place on martial arts?Drawing on hadith literature and classical texts, this short work looks at the art of wrestling as practised by early Muslims, including:- A brief history of wrestling in Arabia and amongst the Companions- A translation and commentary on the short treatise by the great 9th century Imam Jalaluddin as-Suyuti''s al-Musar?ah ila al-Mu?ar?ah (''Swiftly to Wrestling'').- A discussion on the objectives of sports in Islam with excerpts from Silat al-Riyadati bil-Din wa-Dawruha (''The Relation Between Exercise and Religion'') by the late Shaykh Muhammad ibn Alawi al-Maliki (1944-2004).In a time when sport is heavily commercialised, Prophetic Grappling hopes to inspire a new generation to turn to the noble example of the Messenger of God ? and use traditional martial arts as a means of spiritual, as well as physical, growth.
