Pentagon Press Maritime Power Building: New 'Mantra' for China's

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe growth of China's maritime prowess has been a key facet marking the ascendency of its comprehensive national power. A fact amply indicated both by the articulation of the Chinese leadership and empirical evidences, it flows from Beijing's realisation of the growing salience of the oceanic realm and the attendant imperative of being strong at sea for China to attain the status of a global power. In recent years, the scale and speed with which, the erstwhile continental power has accreted all facets of its maritime capacity- both civilian and military - has surpassed the best practitioners of the 'maritime trade-craft', worldwide. In this book titled 'Maritime Power Building: New 'Mantra for China's Rise', 'Mantra' is an Indian word denoting a sacred utterance, believed to have spiritual power. The book is a collective endeavour of India's National Maritime Foundation (NMF) and the U.S. Centre of Naval Analysis (CNA). It seeks to collate the academic efforts and perspectives of the two premier maritime think-tanks located on the opposite sides of the globe to examine and extrapolate China's approach to maritime power building. A key facet addressed is the modernisation of the PLA Navy, which is the final arbiter and preserver of China's maritime and overseas interests in the extended Indo-Pacific region. The book is aimed at facilitating an understanding of the opportunities and challenges of China's rise as a maritime power for the region in particular, and for the world at large.

Book SynopsisYahagi, the second Japanese warship of that name, was the third of the four Agano-class vessels (the other three being Agano, Noshiro and Sakawa). Construction of the Agano-class cruisers was approved by the Japanese parliament (Diet) in March 1939 under the Fourth Naval Armaments Enhancement Program (Dai-Yon-Ji Kaigun Gunbi Jūjitsu Keikaku), also known as “Four-in-Circle” Program (Maru Yon Keikaku), or simply Maru 4. Under the terms of the program, the four light cruisers (kei jun’yōkan), also referred to as type B cruisers (otsu-gata jun’yōkan, or simply otsu jun) and officially classed as second-class cruisers (ni-tō jun’yōkan), were to fulfill the role of destroyer squadron flagships. At that time destroyer squadrons (DesRon), called literarily torpedo squadrons (suirai sentai), consisted of four four-ship destroyer divisions (DesDiv, or kuchiku-tai).Trade ReviewIf you’re building the Yahagi in any scale then this is the only reference book you need. * Model Builder International *

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisSuzutsuki was the third ship from the series of the most powerful Akizuka destroyers, designed specifically as anti-aircraft defenseships, whose main armament consisted of 8 universal 100 mm caliber guns with excellent ballistic characteristics. The Akizuki destroyers were designed before the beginning of World War II as anti-aircraft ships for fast Japanese groups of aircraft carriers. They were completely different from the previous Japanese destroyers, in which the emphasis was put on strong artillery (127 mm guns) and torpedo armament. They were inspired by the British Dido class light anti-aircraft cruisers, however, in contrast with them, the Akizuki destroyers were medium size ships intended for anti-aircraft defense of groups of fleet.Trade Review...full of worthwhile source material for those looking to detail and enhance their model. * Model Shipwrights 21/12/2022 *This book is intensely focused on modeler’s needs for building this ship in any scale. • The Japanese Battleship Kirishima 1940

Kagero Oficyna Wydawnicza The Japanese Battleship Kirishima 1940

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1902, Japan signed an Alliance Pact with Britain, which was then a leading sea power. It ordered modern ships at British shipyards, and Japanese shipyards were to co-operate. After the new class of battlecruisers had emerged, Japan decided to design them for its navy. They were to be ships with a displacement of 19,000 tons and a main armament of 305 mm calibre guns. However, with the news that the British were working on a new design of the LION class cruiser with 343 mm main armament, work on the Japanese project was discontinued. An agreement was signed with the Vickers shipyard for the design and construction of new ships. The design of the LION cruiser was significantly improved by Vickers in co-operation with the Japanese Navy Technical Department. The new project’s main armament envisaged 356 mm guns not used before and developed by Vickers. Medium gun calibre was increased from 102 mm to 152 mm. The power unit was left as on the LION class. Four ships were ordered. The first, KONGO, was built at Vickers’ shipyard, the others were to be built in Japan. KIRISHIMA was built at the Mitsubishi shipyard in Yokosuka. Keel laying – 17 March 1912, launching – 1 December 1913, commissioned on 19 April 1915.

The keel was laid on 23 April 1936, she was launched on 22 August 1938, and commissioned on 1 August 1940. She took part in the first mission of the battleship BISMARCK, during which they sank the British battlecruiser HMS HOOD. Having split with BISMARCK, PRINZ EUGEN was supposed to commence hunting the Allied convoys, but due to engine failure she sailed back to France. Once repaired, she participated in Operation “Cerberus” - the passage of German ships from France to Germany through English Channel.Trade ReviewCompleting the package, the back cover includes a full-colour profile, although no time period is referenced for the two-tone grey livery. Book Synopsis“A wealthy man in Denmark, citizen of the town of Schleswig, built a large ship at great expense. And the king of the country decided to join company and take part in the profits. And after he had made good half of the costs, he owned a corresponding part of the ship …”The medieval Hanseatic merchants are famous for their maritime trade network, which extended across Northern Europe from the 13th century onward. The rare quote above sheds light on a less known period, beginning in the late Viking Age, when large, elegant cargo ships were built and sailed across the sea by Scandinavian merchants. This volume presents the earliest archaeological evidence for specialised merchant seafaring in Danish waters. The cargo ship-finds of Eltang Vig, Lynæs, Karschau and Haderslev are explored in detail in order to illuminate the technology and style of a dynamic age of maritime enterprise and cultural transformation.

  • Viking Age War Fleets: Shipbuilding, resource

Viking Ship Museum Viking Age War Fleets: Shipbuilding, resource

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe military operations of Scandinavian societies in the Viking Age depended on their ships. Different types of ships were used in order to transport troops and war supplies. Some ships were designed to conduct the speedy transport of large numbers of troops, while others were specialised cargo vessels used in military operations as carriers of supplies and sometimes troops as well. This book examines the building and use of ships for warfare in 11th century Denmark. The subjects are addressed through detailed analyses of aspects such as resources, organisational structures and naval warfare. The outcomes are a more informed understanding of 11th century Scandinavian military organisation, shipbuilding and resource management.Trade ReviewThis study reveals, by careful research and analysis based largely on reconstructive archaeology, the full implications of creating, maintaining, and operating war-fleets during the Viking era... The argument is detailed, and might have been tedious had not skilful use been made of tabulated data to lighten and clarify the text. As a result it is a rewarding read with a thought-provoking message, with the tables readily to hand for those who wish to delve more deeply into the evidence. There are two appendices, a glossary, extensive footnotes, and a very full bibliography. * International Journal of Nautical Archaeology *

  • The UP Saga

Book SynopsisHistories of the plantations sector in Malaysia have largely focused on the rubber industry and on the rise and fall of big British-owned colonial enterprises. But since independence, the sector has entered a new phase of spectacular growth founded on the oil palm. This volume offers a radically different history of a firm which spans both eras. The fascinating story of United Plantations Berhad (UP) highlights a Scandinavian-founded firm that evolved along quite different lines from the normal models of British imperial business. Tracing the company's origins before the First World War, it describes the crisis years of economic depression and Japanese occupation then on to the years of spectacular growth which has lasted since the time of the Emergency and Merdeka right up to the present day. The success of this firm - based not just on an extraordinary combination of agricultural, engineering and marketing innovation but also on the company's engagement and commitment to its local environment - provides a glowing example of a partnership between Europeans and Asians which has benefited both sides.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEmpires of the Sea brings together studies of maritime empires from the Bronze Age to the Eighteenth Century. The volume aims to establish maritime empires as a category for the (comparative) study of premodern empires, and from a partly ‘non-western’ perspective. The book includes contributions on Mycenaean sea power, Classical Athens, the ancient Thebans, Ptolemaic Egypt, The Genoese Empire, power networks of the Vikings, the medieval Danish Empire, the Baltic empire of Ancien Régime Sweden, the early modern Indian Ocean, the Melaka Empire, the (non-European aspects of the) Portuguese Empire and Dutch East India Company, and the Pirates of Caribbean.Trade Review"I highly recommend Empires of the Sea to ancient historians studying Mediterranean empires. Altogether, the volume should act as a gateway for historians to think comparatively and to challenge what we take for granted about Greco-Roman imperialism." Nordic Academic Press Vasa II: Part 1. Martnet, whipstaff, and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen Vasa was raised in 1961 a lost world was revealed in astonishing detail. Among the most remarkable finds were the remains of the rigging. Normally shipwrecks offer only a few clues to the structure above the waterline, but on Vasa the lower masts, a myriad of blocks and deadeyes, hundreds of metres of rope and cable and – most astonishingly – nine sails from the ship and its boat survive. The unique finds provide an unparalleled opportunity to reconstruct the rigging in detail and to form an understanding of how ships were sailed in the seventeenth century. With a sail plan, rigging, and steering gear that are substantially different to the classical full-rigged ship of the nineteenth century, the evidence from Vasa paints a vivid picture of ship-handling in the Age of Sail. Vasa II Part 1 presents more than a thousand finds of wood, metal, and cloth from the most complete rig to survive from before 1800, which form the basis for a complete reconstruction of the rig and sailing performance of a large warship of the 1620s.

Amsterdam University Press Encountering Water in Early Modern Europe and

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisBoth the Christian Bible and Aristotle’s works suggest that water should entirely flood the earth. Though many ancient, medieval, and early modern Europeans relied on these works to understand and explore the relationships between water and earth, sixteenth-century Europeans particularly were especially concerned with why dry land existed. This book investigates why they were so interested in water’s failure to submerge the earth when their predecessors had not been. Analyzing biblical commentaries as well as natural philosophical, geographical, and cosmographical texts from these periods, Lindsay Starkey shows that European sea voyages to the southern hemisphere combined with the traditional methods of European scholarship and religious reformations led sixteenth-century Europeans to reinterpret water and earth’s ontological and spatial relationships. The manner in which they did so also sheds light on how we can respond to our current water crisis before it is too late.Trade Review"Of the four elements that classical philosophy—and subsequently the hermeneutics of the Judaeo-Christian tradition—saw as forming the essence of life on Earth, water has undoubtedly received the greatest attention in both scientific and religious-philosophical writings. This fact is clearly demonstrated by Lindsay Starkey in Encountering Water in Early Modern Europe and Beyond. [...] Adopting a convincing line of argument, Starkey says that from the sixteenth century onwards there has been a shift away from a philosophical-religious approach to one that is more practical, discussing water more in terms of human activities (in particular, voyages of geographical discovery)."- Salvatore Ciriacono, Università degli Studi di Padova, Renaissance and Reformation 44.1 (Winter 2021) "Through the long-term approach, Starkey presents a novel and informative overview of developments in European intellectual thought over the course of a millennium and a half. [...] Encountering Water in Early Modern Europe and Beyond is evidence of the important insights that can be gained through covering long time periods. The book is also an important contribution to the discussion of how people have understood their environment throughout history and adds to our understanding of early-modern world views." - Charlotta Forss, Imago Mundi, Vol. 74, Pt. 1Table of ContentsIntroduction: Why Water? • Art and Ocean Objects of Early Modern Eurasia:

Amsterdam University Press Art and Ocean Objects of Early Modern Eurasia:

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDuring the early modern period, objects of maritime material culture were removed from their places of origin and traded, collected and displayed worldwide. Focusing on shells and pearls exchanged within local and global networks, this monograph compares and connects Asian, in particular Chinese, and European practices of oceanic exploitation in the framework of a transcultural history of art with an understanding of maritime material culture as gendered. Perceiving the ocean as mother of all things, as womb and birthplace, Chinese and European artists and collectors exoticized and eroticized shells’ shapes and surfaces. Defining China and Europe as spaces entangled with South and Southeast Asian sites of knowledge production, source and supply between 1500 and 1700, the book understands oceanic goods and maritime networks as transcending and subverting territorial and topographical boundaries. It also links the study of globally connected port cities to local ecologies of oceanic exploitation and creative practices.Trade Review"This fascinating study is meticulously researched and presented with verve. Anna Grasskamp is a rare scholar who is equally conversant with the European archives and the Chinese ones. Her examination of shells and other maritime organisms as collectible transcultural objects casts new light on these objects, and reveals attitudes towards alien creatures, faraway places, and the natural world that are quite different from modern attitudes."- Dorothy Ko, Barnard College “Grasskamp’s exquisitely illustrated study …offers interpretations of individual objects and the Chinese and/or Occidental symbolism associated with them, while at the same time, she tries to embed her findings in larger cultural patterns, variegated forms of local belief, and neglected traditions. … Conchophiles who wish to find out why and how the well-to-do adored nautilus shells and similar specimens will discover many fascinating details in Grasskamp’s account. … Art and Ocean Objects … will inspire scholars to explore the story of marine products in new ways; it is a lively contribution to the field of Euro-Asian (art) history and cultural exchange.”-Roderich Ptak, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies 2023, 86, 2 “Drawing on fields as diverse as art history, object studies, the history of science, and area studies to inform its robust methodology of material culture, the book brings much-needed nuance to the study of the transregional material culture of early modern Europe and China through the maritime world. …Drawing on this new perspective on connected maritime history, the book distinguishes itself by paying almost equal attention to the visual and material cultures of early modern Europe and China, at times articulating their connectivity through objects such as nautilus cups carved in Guangzhou and mounted in Europe, while also comparing patterns of knowledge and gendered imagination generated by shells in the two regions. Although connection and comparison are well-established methods in transregional and global history, Grasskamp adds nuance and complexity to them by way of (transmedial) materiality. …Art and Ocean Objects of Early Modern Eurasia successfully portrays seashells as boundary-crossing objects that went far beyond (re)connecting Europe and China to challenge the entrenched binaries of inanimate things and living organisms, reality and fantasy, secular and religious worlds, and human and non-human entities.“ - Kyoungjin Bae, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, CAA Reviews , 2023, June “Art and Ocean Objects is an important contribution to material culture studies and a model for inter- and cross-cultural studies. It is ambitious in tackling such a large subject—shells and the creatures that build them, the use of shells in art and as art, and common iconographies of shell art (maritime, marginal, erotic, and the feminine)—across the European and Asian cultures that made and collected such works. …. This study shows both the challenges and opportunities of exploring a broad geography and body of works. Grasskamp moves deftly between literary, philosophical, and religious texts and material and visual culture, weaving a rich and nuanced account, made possible by her comfort working with sources across time, cultures, and languages.”- Marsely Kehoe, June in West 86th: A Journal of Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture, 2023, 30, 1 “Grasskamp explores these associations …in her richly illustrated new book, Art and Ocean Objects, on the multicultural complexity of marine objects in early modern Eurasia. Through her expertise in both Asian and European art history (and languages) she is able to situate shells at the crossroads of China and Europe as natural objects and material entanglements…”-Marika Kebluse, Renaissance Quartely, LXXVI, 3,2023Table of ContentsIntroduction 1 Shell Connections: The Exoticization and Eroticization of Asian Maritime Material Culture From Guangzhou to Florence: Parrot Cups as “Actors” Layers of Exoticization: Chinese and European Shell Surfaces Surfaces and Skins: The European Eroticization of Asian Shells Conclusion – Shell Connections 2 Shell Bodies: The Creative Agency of Molluscs across Cultures Clever Objects Shell Agency Clam Creations Female Features Bird Bodies Cultured Connections Conclusion 3 Shell Worlds: Maritime Microcosms in EurAsian Art and Material Culture Shells in Flux Coralscapes Conclusion 4 Woman with a Shell: Transcultural Exchange, Female Bodies and Maritime Matters Women on Shells Women in Shells Women with Shells Women with EurAsian Shells Conclusion – Woman with a Shell Conclusion Cited Primary and Secondary Sources Acknowledgments Index

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisBritain's emergence as one of Europe's major maritime powers has all too frequently been subsumed by nationalistic narratives that focus on operations and technology. This volume, by contrast, offers a daring new take on Britain's maritime past. It brings together scholars from a range of disciplines to explore the manifold ways in which the sea shaped British history, demonstrating the number of approaches that now have a stake in defining the discipline of maritime history. The chapters analyse the economic, social, and cultural contexts in which English maritime endeavour existed, as well as discussing representations of the sea. The contributors show how people from across the British Isles increasingly engaged with the maritime world, whether through their own lived experiences or through material culture. The volume also includes essays that investigate encounters between English voyagers and indigenous peoples in Africa, and the intellectual foundations of imperial ambition.Trade Review"The Maritime World of Early Modern Britain demonstrates how different the questions and methodological approaches of early modern maritime history can be." - Patrick Schmidt, Historisches Institut, Universität Rostock "[The Maritime World of Early Modern Britain] is the inaugural volume of the new Maritime Humanities 1400-1800: Cultures of the Sea series and it is an excellent first statement in that series. The very high quality of the papers is exceeded only by their diversity of topics and approaches […] This book is a good statement on the future of maritime history in the early modern period. It should be widely made available and all students of maritime history be encouraged to read it and be inspired." - Dr. Sam McLean, Global Maritime History "With contributions that consider familiar sources from new angles and include unconventional actors in the narrative, The Maritime World of Early Modern Britain 'reveals a picture of connection, exchange, and interdependence' (35), identifying stimulating themes and methods for maritime historians of Britain and beyond." - Margaret E. Book SynopsisThe Maritime Silk Road foregrounds the numerous networks that have been woven across oceanic geographies, tying world regions together often far more extensively than land-based routes. On the strength of the new data which has emerged in the last two decades in the form of archaeological findings, as well as new techniques such as GIS modelling, the authors collectively demonstrate the existence of a very early global maritime trade. From architecture to cuisine, and language to clothing, evidence points to early connections both within Asia and between Asia and other continents—well before European explorations of the Global South. The human stories presented here offer insights into both the extent and limits of this global exchange, showing how goods and people travelled vast distances, how they were embedded in regional networks, and how local cultures were shaped as a result.Table of ContentsIllustrations Acknowledgments (Franck Billé, Sanjyot Mehendale, and James W. Out of stock

Book SynopsisMaritime Musicians and Performers on Early Modern English Voyages aims to tell the full story of early English shipboard performers, who have been historically absent from conversations about English navigation, maritime culture, and economic expansion. Often described reductively in voyaging accounts as having one function, in fact maritime performers served many communicative tasks. Their lives were not only complex, but often contradictory. Though not high-ranking officers, neither were they lower-ranking mariners or sailors. They were influenced by a range of competing cultural practices, having spent time playing on both land and sea, and their roles required them to mediate parties using music, dance, and theatre as powerful forms of nonverbal communication. Their performances transcended and breached boundaries of language, rank, race, religion, and nationality, thereby upsetting conventional practices, improving shipboard and international relations, and ensuring the success of their voyages.Trade Review"This original and accessible book draws on archival sources and embraces social history, labor history, and the history of performance. The stories of these artists, actors, dancers, and musicians who are thrown together with common seafarers and how they are forced to (or are delighted to) navigate between the sailors’ rough ways and the courtly pretensions of their senior officers makes a striking new contribution to the history and sociology of shipboard life during the early modern period." - Colin Dewey, California State University Maritime Academy ''Seth’s method is to be expansive, considering as wide a range of performers — singers, musicians, dancers, play actors — as he can, and attempting as full a recapitulation of the lives of the performers as sources will allow. And it is his capacious conception of music and performance that makes this work unique; his chapters include not only the expected attention to military and civilian performers, as well as interest in the performative underpinnings of rituals and diplomatic entertainments; they also explore signaling work and the importance of nonverbal communication to early modern colonizers.''- Manushang N. Amsterdam University Press Piracy in World History

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn a modern global historical context, scholars have often regarded piracy as an essentially European concept which was inappropriately applied by the expanding European powers to the rest of the world, mainly for the purpose of furthering colonial forms of domination in the economic, political, military, legal and cultural spheres. By contrast, this edited volume highlights the relevance of both European and non-European understandings of piracy to the development of global maritime security and freedom of navigation. It explores the significance of ‘legal posturing’ on the part of those accused of piracy, as well as the existence of non-European laws and regulations regarding piracy and related forms of maritime violence in the early modern era. The authors in Piracy in World History highlight cases from various parts of the early-modern world, thereby explaining piracy as a global phenomenon.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements 1 Introduction: Piracy in World History Stefan Eklof Amirell, Bruce Buchan, and Hans Hagerdal 2 "Publique Enemies to Mankind": International Pirates as a Product of International Politics Michael Kempe 3 All at Sea: Locke's Tyrants and the Pyrates of Political Thought Bruce Buchan 4 The Colonial Origins of Theorizing Piracy’s Relation to Failed States Jennifer L. Book SynopsisMementoes of HMS Tamar abound in Hong Kong, but what is really known about this troopship and her role in the maintenance of British imperial rule? Using logbooks, newspapers, and numerous other sources, this book pieces together the multifaceted and largely unknown history of the Tamar. From her launch into service to her roles as a hospital, theatre stage, and transport for military personnel, the Tamar carried not just people, but also their mundane dreams and ambitions - for friends, families, and staying alive. Any ideas or concerns about sustaining the empire seldom featured in their minds at all, but it was this empire that the Tamar served for seventy-nine years, steaming the equivalent of thirty-two times around the Earth and transporting tens of thousands of people to what would seem to them another world. In this engaging narrative, the Tamar's exploits and the experiences of her crew and passengers parallel those of the British Empire and its subjects, bringing to life the realities of imperial life on land and at sea. As mud continues to settle over the Tamar's forgotten remains in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, Transport to Another World will appeal to historians and readers interested in maritime history and colonial Hong Kong in general, and makes a case for conserving the memory of a past some would prefer to forget.Table of Contents Prologue: All Valiant Dust that Builds on Dust Part I: Far-called, Our Navies Part II: Drunk with Sight of Power Part Ill: On Dune and Headland Sinks the Fire Part IV: Still Stands Thine Ancient Sacrifice Epilogue: All Our Pomp of Yesterday

Book SynopsisThe South Indian Chola kings had developed a sophisticated maritime enterprise based on sea based commerce with trading contacts in Malaya, Sumatra and China. This had resulted in an ocean going fleet that was dispatched by the Chola King Rajendra Choladeva I against the Srivijaya Kingdom. The essays in this volume reflect on the naval expedition, which is also mentioned in the inscription dated 1030-31 of the big temple of Tanjavur in South India. Perhaps the most significant contribution of this volume to Asian maritime history is the translations of ancient and medieval Tamil and Sanskrit inscriptions relating to Southeast Asia and China and the Chinese Texts describing or referring to the Chola Kingdom as Zhunian.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is a highly readable and generously illustrated history of piracy and privateering in the Indian Ocean. At the beginning of the 17th century, pirates infested the Caribbean waters, harassing the major European powers, but they were eventually driven from the region. Some pirates took refuge in Madagascar, where they attempted to capture the lucrative cargo carried by vessels on the shipping route of the European East India Companies. At the end of the 18th century, in order to weaken British influence in the Indian Ocean, France hired privateers to attack commercial ships of the British East India Company. This was an alternative to open warfare, and heralded the privateers' era. Author Denis Piat recounts the history of the pirates and privateers in the Indian Ocean, especially in Mauritius, from the pirates' arrival in the region to the wrecked ships still to be found today in deep water, and provides portraits of the most famous privateers among them.
