Hodder & Stoughton How To Read Water
Book Synopsis''A wonderful read... It''s one of those books that gives you a new pair of eyes to see the world in a different way. I''ve been transported by it... You''ll love every minute, the writing is absolutely beautiful.'' - Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall From the bestselling author of THE WALKER''S GUIDE TO OUTDOOR CLUES AND SIGNSA must-have book for walkers, sailors, swimmers, anglers and everyone interested in the natural world, in How To Read Water, Natural Navigator Tristan Gooley shares knowledge, skills, tips and useful observations to help you enjoy the landscape around you and learn about the magic of the outdoors from your living room.Includes over 700 clues, signs and patterns. From wild swimming in Sussex to wayfinding in Oman, via the icy mysteries of the Arctic, Tristan Gooley draws on his own pioneering journeys to reveal the secrets of ponds, puddles, rivers, oceans and more to show us all the skills we need to Trade ReviewThis inspired guide to water in all its forms will make a big splash...Gooley has done his subject proud - this is seriously fascinating stuff. * The Times *This study of the behaviour of rivers, lakes and seas brims over with astonishing facts... His observational skills can be breathtaking... Gooley's infectious delight in knowledge translates into a gleeful hoarding of words... The joy of these words and phenomena is that they make you yearn to observe them in the real world... Gooley even manages to explain tides coherently and excitingly in just 14 pages, which is quite some feat, given that they are a lot more complicated than being a mere effect of the moon's gravity. * The Sunday Times *Quite apart from being well written and an enjoyable read, there is plenty in the book that is revelatory. * The Royal Institute of Navigation *He writes with passion, humour and clarity and engages so deeply with the tributaries of inquiry that reading it feels as exhilarating as being towed by a dolphin...There's so much here that I can't do it justice; chapters on water at night; currents and tides; reading waves; the coast. This is an absolute gem of a book. A must-have for anyone who loves the water. * The Outdoor Swimming Society *The goal of the author is to have his readers never look at water the same way after reading this book. He has certainly achieved his objective and I doubt I will now ever be able to walk past a lake or even a pond without checking for surface patterns. * thebookbag.co.uk *The quirks and habits and secrets of good old H2O were crying out to have a book written about them. That said, it had to be written by the right person... Fortunately, the job went to Tristan Gooley... His tales recount wisdom gathered on the ground (literally), often by trial and error, and his joy at discovering something almost makes you feel you did the work yourself... The book doesn't just cover the rural sections of the waterfront: urban dwellers get a look-in too. * The Spectator *Gooley, who has single-handedly been reviving natural navigation in this age of GPS, has the birdwatching skills of Bill Oddie and the deductive powers of Sherlock Holmes. He can make you feel that you've spent half your life walking about with your eyes only half-open. He does it again with this fascinating guide to watching and interpreting water, everywhere from the garden pond to the Pacific. * Telegraph *Tristan Gooley's lovely and exhaustively researched book...if you like water, as I do, you will learn a lot. * Wall Street Journal *Anyone who spends time in, on, or by, water - whether at the helm of a narrowboat or merely playing Poohsticks with grandkids - will benefit from some of the extraordinary insights in this book. * Waterways World *

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Heroes of the RNLI: The Storm Warriors
Book SynopsisWhenever vessels have foundered off the coasts of Britain, there have always been those willing to give their all to save those in peril. But in 1823, Sir William Hillary decided that this admirable but impromptu approach was not enough. He believed that many more lives could be saved by the establishment of a national, organised rescue service. His idea was realised the following year. From the days of oar-powered open boats to modern high speed, hi-tech vessels, rescuers have battled storms and unimaginable conditions, risking - and sometimes forfeiting - their own lives in efforts to save others. The most outstanding of these operations led to the awarding of gold medals for gallantry, the RNLI version of the Victoria Cross. Above all, these are human stories. Using information gleaned from archives, contemporary newspaper accounts and genealogical records, this book looks not just at the details of the rescues, but into the people behind them.

Book SynopsisAn engaging first-hand memoir of life in the Royal Navy during the Cold WarTony Beasley joined the Royal Navy as a teenager in 1946. Nova Science Publishers Inc Arctic Maritime Infrastructure: Key Issues and
Book SynopsisThe United States is an Arctic nation. Due to climate change, the Arctic is warming faster than any other region on Earth. As the loss of sea ice creates a more accessible Arctic, the nation must consider risks and opportunities for commerce and economic growth; security of our maritime domain; indigenous peoples and their subsistence cultures; and marine resource management, particularly along the Alaskan coast. To enhance Arctic marine transportation safety, protect Arctic people and the environment, build Arctic marine infrastructure, and to ensure safe and secure maritime shipping in the Arctic, Congress directed that the interagency Committee on Marine Transportation System (CMTS) coordinate the establishment of domestic transportation policies in the Arctic. This book answers that Congressional directive while addressing the considerations outlined above. This book also discusses current commercial maritime activity in the U.S. Arctic and anticipated activity in the next 10 years; actions taken by government entities in support of planning and developing U.S. Arctic maritime infrastructure; and federal interagency efforts to identify and prioritize Arctic maritime-infrastructure investments.

Whittles Publishing Archie's Lights: The Life and Times of a Scottish
Book SynopsisBorn at a clifftop lighthouse in 1910, Archie's life was spent in the world of Scottish lighthouses - he was one of the third generation of his family in the service of the Northern Lighthouse Board. Archie's stories have gripped listeners of all ages and have now been compiled by Anne MacEachern. Written in Archie's words, this account portrays the man and reveals a past way of life. From peacetime through war, dealing with goats, shipwrecked sailors or German spies, the story brings vividly to life the challenges of living and working at a lighthouse, including raising a young family at such an isolated and potentially dangerous place. Many characters appear at various lights, each with their own personality and often annoying habits. Short-term transfers took place in and just after World War 2 when communications and transport were particularly difficult. There were hardships and rewards, and a mystery to solve: the well-known disappearance of three keepers at the Flannan Isles in 1900. The men had to be - and were - remarkably resourceful and courageous, although not all could stand the isolation and dangers at offshore pillar rock lights, especially in wartime. The sea ruled their lives - creating idyllic periods on sunny, calm days but being uncontrollably destructive for much of the time. Like his colleagues, Archie upheld to the best of his ability the ideal of their Service, `For the Safety of All', but in his younger days he was not afraid to speak up and press, with others, for better conditions. His service as a full-time keeper continued in part-time capacities, extended over a period of 67 years. Through this man's keen eye, the reader will meet people, birds, animals and situations from a lifetime of service; a revealing glimpse into this close-knit world. There is also humour, often that dry Highland humour, which adds spice to the telling; in Archie's case a fondness for wild places and dried figs helped.Trade Review‘Anne’s faithful recounting of her husband’s career shows the importance of oral histories and is a shining example of how to preserve ancestral knowledge and records of maritime service’. Nautilus International -------------------- `A work of enduring love and humanity... and so much more. ...Archie's Lights is a balm in its comforting cadences and its reassuring tones, which hark back to a world of unshakeable values and quietly understated wisdom. ...Anne MacEachern has brought forward a masterpiece. ...she has woven a spell that transports the reader into another world; a world of harsh and inhospitable places like Dubh Artach and Skerryvore...' Scottish Review -------------------- `Not only is the daily routine of a keeper brought vividly to life but so are the remote communities that generously welcomed Lighthouse families into their midsts. The book is littered with fascinating anecdotes and details that are unlikely to be recorded elsewhere. We owe much to Archie's wife Anne for sharing this important story'. NLB Journal -------------------- `The story brings vividly to life the challenges of living and working at a lighthouse, including raising a young family in isolated and potentially dangerous places. I am sure that all those who have an interest in lighthouses, their history and the lives of keepers will enjoy Archie's Lights as much as I have'. The Northern Scot -------------------- `...this is undoubtedly one of the best books I have read in years! There is so much material to enjoy both anecdotal and factual... ...this book is crammed full of detail and excitement. Surely a worthy addition to the swelling bibliography of today's lighthouse world. This book stands in top place for me, and I give it full marks!' Bellrock.org.uk -------------------- `Over the years, Archie's stories have gripped listeners of all ages and have now been beautifully compiled by Anne MacEachern in this wonderful book. Highly recommended'. Sea Breezes -------------------- `...this book takes one on a rich journey through the twentieth century as a lightkeeper. ...a compelling biography. ...offers a fascinating insight into the distinct way of life which no longer exists. Through Archie's memories, Anne has opened up a wealth of detail relating to the history of lighthouses, their keepers and the communities they served in twentieth-century Scotland'. LAMP -------------------- `...a wonderful book for anyone with the slightest interest in lighthouses, and especially in Scottish lighthouses. ...succeeds in bringing the lighthouses to life in a way we've never quite seen before, by focusing on the story of one remarkable man. It also succeeds in bringing vividly to life a man who was an integral part of that long-gone world...' Undiscovered Scotland

Whittles Publishing They Once Were Shipbuilders: 1
Book SynopsisLeith-Built Ships is a testimony to the skill of the men who built the ships and to the many men and women who may have sailed or served on them. This history is brought together in vol. I of a three-volume series about the almost-forgotten part that Leith played in our great maritime heritage and is the culmination of the author's lifetime experience of shipbuilding. Most people may well be aware of the part played by the great shipbuilding centres in the UK's history but many may be unaware of the part played by the shipbuilders of Leith. This port was once Scotland's main port with many firsts to its name. Leith had begun building ships some 400 years before the great shipyards of the Clyde and these vessels reached all corners of the globe, touching many people's lives. Some had sad histories while others took part in some of the great conflicts of the times; many were just ordinary working vessels that carried their crew safely through long working lives. With a pedigree of shipbuilding second to none going back over 660 years of recorded history, the ships built at Leith deserve their place in history and this book begins the story.Trade Review'...Mr Neish's splendid and very thorough 144 page tome offers a complete history of the ships built at Leith from c. 1850 until the end of World War I...includes tales of famous ships, steam yachts, adventure and new trade routes as well as a helpful glossary'. Gloucestershire Transport History-------------------'...the ships built at Leith deserve their place in history and this book, the first of a triology begins the story'. The Bosun's Chronicle------------------'...an engrossing book that will have a lasting value...you'd expect this book to be superbly researched and knowledgeably written. It doesn't disappoint. It is also readily accessible to the non-expert.' Undiscovered Scotland-------------------...A valuable history is provided of the ships built at Leith from around 1850 until the end of the First World War detailing the yards and the famous ships they constructed, accompanied by tales of adventure, trades and inevitably fates'. Africa Ports and Ships-------------------'The narrative is filled with anecdotes and a warmth that can only come from someone with personal memories of the industry and it is a fitting homage to the shipbuilding heritage of Edinburgh, so often eclipsed by Glasgow'. Whittles Publishing In the Treacle Mine: The Life of a Marine
Book SynopsisIf anyone has ever wondered what happens in the engine room when the Captain on the bridge rings 'Full Ahead' on the telegraph then this book will enlighten the reader. This is a story of one man's life at sea, from his beginnings as a lowly cadet to his qualification as a Chief Engineer. There are many anecdotes about his experiences - some amusing and some terrifying - together with pen portraits of a few of his fellow seafarers and the places he visited. In the Treacle Mine starts in the 1960s when steam power was still the preferred option for larger and more powerful ships but over the following decade, the availability of ever more powerful and more fuel-efficient, diesel engines sounded the death knell for steam propulsion. Now there are only a few preserved steamships left as a reminder of how things used to be down below in the 'treacle mine', which was how Geordie marine engineers described the engine-room. Despite the fact that steam power has disappeared from everyday use, there are still a great many enthusiasts from all walks of life who are prepared to give up their spare time to ensure that steam lives on. This dedication means that heritage steam railways, steam traction engines and even the occasional preserved steamship, can continue to operate and give pleasure to millions of visitors every year. One whole chapter is devoted to a voyage with an 'up and downer' (a steam reciprocating engine) and although the remaining steamers were all turbine vessels which may lack the same visual appeal, there will still be much that will be of interest to any steam enthusiast. Following his experiences with steam, the author eventually began working on motor ships but these were also not without incident and there is much in this book that will spark the interest of anyone who enjoys stories of the sea and seafarers.

Lodestar Books Forthright & Steadfast: The Wooden Fishing Boats
Book SynopsisHaving recorded in pen and ink the -"Fishing Boats of Scotland" which she loves, Gloria Wilson here focusses her attention on the -Peterhead yard of Richard Irvin & Sons, and the wooden, cruiser sterned fishing boats for which it became renowned in the second half of the twentieth century. Almost one hundred of her own photographs accompany her account of the boats and the people who made up a distinctive and now disappearing maritime culture. As Paul Gartside writes in his Foreword: "Gloria Wilson truly belongs in the tradition of the folklorists—individuals moved initially by the discovery of beauty in the commonplace who are then compelled to understand and record what they find… One hopes her example will spur others to similar effort, for the capturing of culture and local knowledge before it slips away is always a noble pursuit."

Lodestar Books Remembering the Boats: A lifetime with the North
Book SynopsisFishing boats, particularly those along the eastern seaboard of Britain, from Whitby northwards, have always been fundamental to my existence writes Gloria Wilson in her Introduction. … I touch upon my own story, give some account of how I have arrived at the happy and somewhat unconformable circumstance of being a writer and illustrator within the commercial fishing and boat building communities. Nevertheless, the boats themselves form the mainstay, the connective narrative throughout the book… I have chosen those which, for me, are the most likeable and pleasing, predominantly the classic, cruiser-sterned wooden-hulled seine netters and dual-purpose craft which are splendid sea boats and have such beautiful hull forms.

Lodestar Books Working Sail: A life in wooden boats
Book SynopsisLuke Powell has almost single-handedly pioneered a revival in the building of traditional pilot cutters in Great Britain; he also has a flair for storytelling, both when looking back over a rich if unconventional life lived to the full, and when describing the long struggle to win acceptance for the wooden boats on which he established his reputation. Luke’s interest in boats began when clambering over the rotten hulks then mudbound in the backwater creeks of his Suffolk boyhood. Aged nine, he set sail with his family for the Greek islands. From then on the sea was his school. After an apprenticeship as a shipwright restoring Thames barges, he returned to the Mediterranean and the nomadic life of a journeyman boatbuilder. In due course he acquired a French girlfriend – the first of many long-suffering partners in his adventures – and Charmian, a 75-year-old cutter. In 1990, with a baby son on board, he sailed Charmian up the Helford River in Cornwall, little realising that seven years later this would become the home of his boatbuilding business, Working Sail. Luke’s arrival in England coincided with the renewal of interest in traditional boats. Having stumbled on a book about Scillonian pilot cutters, he vowed to build one from scratch. Risking what little money he had on buying timber, he built Eve by himself – almost with his bare hands. Success came gradually, yet to this day remains underpinned by a passionate belief in skills, craftsmanship and values that cannot be quantified in terms of money. Other boats have since been launched into the Helford – Lizzie May, Agnes, Hesper, Ezra, Tallulah, Amelie Rose, Freja – whose names are a rollcall of some of the most admired boats to have recently been built in Britain. Working Sail was first published in 2012; since then Luke and his team have built the 65ft Falmouth pilot cutter Pellew, the process being recorded in Christian Topf’s visual and verbal diary From the Loft Floor to the Sea.

Fernhurst Books Limited The Restoration Handbook for Yachts: The
Book SynopsisRestoring a fibreglass yacht is not something for the faint-hearted, even if you don’t intend to do all the work yourself (you still need to understand the processes to be gone through). But the satisfaction of the job well done, not to mention the possible cost savings on buying a new yacht, are immense. Nevertheless, it is not something that should be undertaken lightly and without careful consideration. That is where this book comes in, as Enric Roselló takes you through his restoration of a 30-year-old 40-foot yacht. Broken down into 46 chapters, Enric details the stages of his restoration in chronological order. For each he starts with an overview of the task and the thinking behind the approach he took. Just these introductory pieces alone are ideal for someone contemplating a restoration (of all or part of a boat) to read before making the final decision as to whether to go ahead. For those who decide to take on the challenge, each overview is followed by an in-depth step-by-step account of what they did, accompanied by numerous informative photo sequences (with over 800 colour photos in total). The material in this book would be invaluable both to boat owners who are considering a complete overhaul and to those who have one or two smaller jobs to do. All possible subjects are covered, including dealing with osmosis, the interiors, deck, rigging, electrics and electronics, plumbing, engine, galley, heads and much more. The author is very honest about the amount of work and commitment required and also offers advice about when to call in the professionals and when to consider doing the work yourself. Anyone contemplating a complete or partial restoration is advised to read this book beforehand, so you know what is ahead, and to follow its guidance if you to decide to proceed.Trade Review"...a very well researched book, easy to browse and easy to follow. Fernhurst Books Limited Knox-Johnston on Seamanship & Seafaring: Lessons
Book SynopsisOn 14th June 1968 Robin Knox-Johnston set sail from Falmouth to take part in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race - the first, non-stop, single-handed sailing race around the world. He was an unknown 29-year old Merchant Navy Officer. Ten and a half months later he sailed back into Falmouth, the only finisher in the race and the first man to complete a non-stop solo circumnavigation. Since then he has had an illustrious sailing career, with 3 further circumnavigations, including the fastest circumnavigation and last racing solo round the world in 2007, aged 68. Few people have sailed as many miles as Robin. Now, 50 years since setting out on the Golden Globe Race, you can benefit from Robin's wealth of experience as he shares his thoughts on seamanship and seafaring in this new book, selected from his most provoking, insightful and perceptive writing from the pages of Yachting World magazine. The first half of the book concentrates on seamanship and looks at the skills and gear required. The second half allows Robin to reminisce on memorable boats, races and places he has experienced in his last 50 years of seafaring. The book starts with an original piece by Robin reflecting on the last 50 years.Trade Review“What makes this book so exciting is that it contains many of the things that Robin has learned over the years since he set of from Falmouth in 1968. Anyone who ventures to sea would be wise to take advantage of the seamanship lessons that Robin has learned. However, anyone who has met Robin also knows that he is not just a wise old seaman – he is also great fun and lives life to the full. This shows in the pieces on seafaring in this book where he tells of some of his favourite boats, races and places he has visited – always with a twinkle in his eye! They are a joy to read and remind us that sailing is primarily a fun activity, to be enjoyed!” (Alex Thomson, June 2018) “Now leisure sailors can benefit from Robin’s wealth of experience.” (Yachting Life, July 2018) “Hints, tips, advice and yarns from Britain’s most famous sailor; this is a great book to dip into when you’ve just come off watch or are waiting for someone to get back from the showers… Robin covers a huge range of subjects with seamanlike directness and a master mariner’s authority.” (Classic Sailor, June 2018) “well crafted and highly authoritative” (Sailing Today, Aug 2018) “One of the world’s greatest yachtsmen shares his thoughts on seamanship and seafaring.” (Julian Stockwin, June 2018) “This book is a delight to read. The chapter headings alone are worth the cover price. His advice is as useful for sailing round the Isle of Wight as for sailing round the world. Every word is helpful. An engaging and well written book.” (Little Ship Club, Summer 2018) “Every one is valuable” (Yachting Monthly, Aug 2018) “A very readable and wide-ranging collection of short essays… The brevity of these essays makes this an ideal book to pick up and browse, even when there is not much time for reading. Knox-Johnston writes very well, and all of the essays can be read and re-read, profitably and with enjoyment.” (Royal Cruising Club, Nov 2018)Table of ContentsForeword; Introduction; PART ONE: SEAMANSHIP: Skills; Gear; PART TWO: SEAFARING: Boats; Races; Places.

Springer International Publishing AG Maritime Decarbonization: Practical Tools, Case
Book SynopsisThis volume analyses maritime decarbonization from various perspectives. It contains unique approaches and tools in four areas: scenarios, value chains, enablers, and partnerships.Decarbonization has become a very important focus in the maritime industry. Anyone that delves into the topic quickly appreciates its breadth and complexity. Minimizing greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in maritime practices at large and doing it swiftly is far from simple. The Paris 2015 climate goals and the IMO ambitions may be the industry’s guiding lights. But is this enough? Probably not. At the managerial level a paradigm shift is needed: from a fixed mindset that is calling for compensation to a growth mindset that seeks to capture the benefits of decarbonization. This will require a structured approach in the form of practical frameworks and clear recommendations. In this book 75 scholars and industry and subject matter experts have joined forces to explore different scenarios, value chain designs, decarbonization enablers, and partnership models to develop frameworks and recommendations around how to effectively work and make progress. The books offers a valuable mix of theory, practical tools, and real-life cases. Table of ContentsPart 1: Outlining Baseline and Perspectives.- Chapter 1. United Nations Review of maritime transport 2023
Book SynopsisThe Review of Maritime Transport is an UNCTAD flagship publication, published annually since 1968. Around 80 per cent of the volume of international trade in goods is carried by sea, and the percentage is even higher for most developing countries. The Review of Maritime Transport provides an analysis of structural and cyclical changes affecting seaborne trade, ports and shipping, as well as an extensive collection of statistical information. The report calls for a 'just and equitable transition' to a decarbonized shipping industry. The sector, whose greenhouse gas emissions have risen 20% over the last decade, operates an ageing fleet that runs almost exclusively on fossil fuels. As global leaders prepare for the next UN climate conference (COP28), UNCTAD advocates for system-wide collaboration, swift regulatory intervention and stronger investments in green technologies and fleets. Full decarbonisation by 2050 will require massive investments and could lead to higher maritime logistics costs, raising concerns for vulnerable shipping-reliant nations like small island developing states. The report emphasizes the need to balance environmental goals with economic needs but underscores that the cost of inaction far outweighs the required investments. The report recommends policy actions to overcome supply chain hurdles African countries face, including poor logistics, low levels of technology, fragmented markets, limited capital sources, and weak institutions and regulations. Beyond cleaner fuels, the industry needs to move faster towards digital solutions like AI and blockchain to improve efficiency as well as sustainability. In its analysis of global maritime trends, the report highlights shipping's resilience despite major challenges stemming from global crises, such as the war in Ukraine. Maritime trade is expected to grow 2.4% in 2023 and more than 3% between 2024 and 2028
