Uncivilized Books New Construction: Two More Stories
Book SynopsisL.A. Times Book Prizes Finalist (Graphic Novel/Comics) 2016 A collection of two new stories from cartoonist and Adventure Time contributor Sam Alden. In "Household," a brother and sister deal with divergent memories of their father and grow closer than ever. In "Backyard," vegans and anarchists share a house, small dramas and bizarre transformations (featuring a new, never before published ending). Designed as a companion volume for the critically acclaimed It Never Happened Again, New Construction cements Sam Alden's reputation as one of the best cartoonists of his generation. Sam Alden Sam Alden is the author of It Never Happened Again, Wicked Chicken Queen, and Lydian, among others. He is a two-time Ignatz winner and four-time nominee, and works full-time as a writer and storyboarder on Cartoon Network's Adventure Time. Praise for Sam Alden's It Never Happened Again: "Alden's natural sense of framing and pace, his willingness to use silent panels to tell stories, and his beautiful (yes, beautiful) pencil images combined to open my eyes to a new idea of what a great comic can be. It helps that he's also an excellent writer--both stories sketch out lonely, lost characters efficiently, and put them each through very different quests for meaning."--Dan Kois, Slate "Two thematically divergent, but devastatingly human portraits from an emerging cartoonist displaying the sort of storytelling and artistic restraint that often only comes after years of toiling away at the drawing board. Alden is a talent to watch."--Publishers WeeklyTrade ReviewL.A. Times Book Prizes Finalist (Graphic Novel/Comics) 2016 "Alden has an explicit gift, no doubt well-practiced, for drawings that are effortless in their breezy sloppiness -- a quick hand, never belabored -- that simultaneously exhibits a brilliant technical ability for composition, lighting, detail, and abstraction. His natural ability seems to reach all the way back to Rembrandt."--LA Times Review of Books "With his delicate pencil work and skill for atmospheric, emotionally rich storytelling, Sam Alden has emerged as one of the most exciting talents in alt-comics. His new graphic novel New Construction is an exceptional showcase of his cartooning prowess."--Onion AV Club "Alden's art is often described as evocative and rich in atmosphere, which it is -- but it's also rich in information. I think as comic readers, we have been trained to be lazy, to skim over the pretty pictures and let text guide our understanding. If we linger over images, it's for our own visual pleasure. That's fine, but with New Construction, a careless reading is not going to cut it. These stories are not like your typical Hollywood blockbuster where you can mentally check out because all the important plot points, not to mention emotional cues, will be shoved down your throat. New Construction requires your full attention."--Cute Juice Comics

Uncivilized Books What Remains: Colombia: Stories and Histories
Book SynopsisWhat Remains is an innovative graphic novel that weaves documentary and memoir forms to capture the sociopolitical fabric of Colombia, spanning 200 years. Camilo Aguirre dips in and out of pivotal historical periods, all while skillfully interweaving family histories and anecdotes of students, union workers, and guerilla fighters. He creates a critical, unflinching vision of Colombia that is profoundly mobilizing in its search for resolution. Aguirre is hopeful throughout, but he refuses to step into the trap of fictitious optimism. The people and the families represent a detailed composite portrait of life in Colombia, sketched from opposing ends of the political spectrum. Colombia is inextricable from its people's complex lives and identities, as well as the lives of Aguirre and his family. Aguirre narrates the complexities from a distant Minneapolis. He details the tides of power and politics, from American and corporate interventions to internal hierarchies of wealth and power, and finally to the impact of emerging globalization and neoliberalism. The criminalization and persecution of union workers and students propagate amidst these political phases. What Remains poses a question. Aguirre answers through a profoundly personal lens and demonstrates that what remains of Colombia are the rich and varied lives of its people.

South Dakota State Historical Society American Ace: Joe Foss, Fighter Pilot
Book SynopsisFrom the time he was four years old, Joseph Jacob "Joe" Foss (1915–2003) found flight fascinating. As an adolescent, he followed the career of flyer Charles Lindbergh and could hardly wait to get into the air himself. In college, he took private flying lessons, and as war broke out across Europe in 1939 and 1940, he joined the South Dakota National Guard, preparing himself for combat by earning more flight time on weekends. After graduation, he joined the United States Marines Corps' flight training program. Finally, in 1942, Joe was ready to be a fighter pilot, just as he had always dreamed of being. But he was now twenty-six years old, and the military deemed him too old for combat. Instead, the Marine Corps assigned Joe to teach men eighteen to twenty-three years old how to fly.Joe accepted his role but also volunteered for special assignments. He became an aerial reconnaissance photographer, hoping the job might lead him to the battle front. He pestered his superiors until he was allowed to take combat training in the Grumman F4F Wildcat, the carrier-based dogfighter of the Pacific theater. Still, he found himself stateside rather than at the front. He continued to volunteer for dangerous assignments, and his determination eventually won him a spot in a fighting unit just as the war in the Pacific heated up.Joining the Marine Corps' VMF-121 fighter squadron as executive officer, Capt. Joe Foss and his unit shipped out to Guadalcanal, code-named "Cactus," in the Solomon Islands. They arrived in early October 1942, just weeks after the Allies had taken Henderson Field on Guadalcanal from the Japanese. By mid-October, Joe had shot down five enemy airplanes, which officially made him a flying ace. With his leadership and his pilots' daredevil tactics, the VMF-121 became known as Foss's Flying Circus, the heart of the Cactus Air Force. Shooting down a total of twenty-six enemy planes between October 10, 1942, and January 25, 1943, Foss became America's Number One Ace and earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his role in Guadalcanal. He was a hero known around the world for his prowess in the skies.Using pen and ink, Hector Curriel draws readers into his subject's triumphs and trials as Joe Foss overcomes difficult and dangerous situations. He is shot down twice, contracts malaria, and loses his friends and comrades in battle. American Ace places action at the forefront, using the escapades of Foss during World War II to showcase the experience of many fighter pilots, while highlighting the perseverance that made this man unique.

Street Noise Books Shame Pudding: A Graphic Memoir
Book SynopsisA celebration of the wacky and wonderful Jewish grandmothers who nurtured the author as she grew from a kid struggling with anxiety and insecurity to a teen finding her own voice. Danny Noble grew up in an eccentric family with two weird and wonderful Jewish grandmas living right around the corner. One grandma stuffed her full of love and gefilte fish, and the other pinched her cheeks shrieking “shayn punim!” The strange words hung in the air, sounding like ”shame pudding.” Was this some sort of insult? It was never explained that those words meant ”beautiful face” in Yiddish. This memoir, told in graphic novel format, is a personal celebration of the author’s charming and vibrant family and how they saved her from the machinations of her own brain. It explores resonant adolescent topics of body image, self-determination, insecurity, fear, religious identity, politics, friendship, romantic love, and family relationships. Danny Noble's expressive style brings this delightful cast of characters to life.Trade Review“Noble immediately establishes an authentically intimate voice, confessional but also self-aware and generous; her endearingly scratchy, impressionistic ink drawings feel like she’s trusting readers with pages from her diary.” —Publishers Weekly. “Growing up, Noble’s inner wolf prevented her from being able to find her voice. While she was fascinated by werewolves, she was very shy with her peers and only really felt comfortable being herself when she was around her loud and vibrant family, especially 'the Mas.' The Mas, Grandma Min and Ma, are Danny’s paternal and maternal grandmothers, respectively, and they are the true heart of this book: They are fully fleshed out in both prose and illustration and are therefore so real that they will be sure to make readers feel as if they knew and loved them too.” —Kirkus Reviews. “Danny Noble’s Shame Pudding is a wonderfully drawn, ridiculously sensitive, very wise and very funny graphic memoir that evokes what it’s like to be a child—or to have been a child (or at least, to have been me as a child)—better than anything I’ve read. It gave me back something precious I thought I’d lost. I’m in awe and will reread it often.” —Liana Fink, author of Passing for Human. “I love this book. It’s beautiful, touching, gritty and hilarious. A refreshing perspective on an era that’s so familiar to many of us. So heartwarming but never saccharine. Very real and true.” —Adrian Edmondson, actor and comedian. “I was absolutely enamored with it from the start. Danny draws her story and the stories of those around her with a wonderfully delicate hand, and in a way that leaves a beautiful and lasting impact. Shame Pudding is a comforting memoir that captures the funny, strange and enduring spirit of family, and the love that we may always return to when things are falling apart.” —Ruby Elliot, author of It’s All Absolutely Fine. “With masterfully whimsical drawings Danny Noble pictures the taste and texture of childhood and the highs and stomach knots of young adulthood. Vibrant family portraits emerge from Shame Pudding, characters I feel like I know, or wish I could: two big-hearted grandmas, one graceful and full of praise, the other ever-threatening fisticuffs, a genius brother who floats in air, quirky and supportive parents. But perhaps the most affecting character captured is the author herself, a self-proclaimed grubby girl plagued by social silence who grows to quell self-hate through music and art. Shame Pudding is a wholly unique story about giving voice to the inner wolf, and the family that always listens.” —Amy Kurzweil, author of Floating Couch.

In this delightfully compelling full-color graphic memoir, the author shares her process of undoing the effects of a patriarchal, colonial society on her self-image, her sexuality, and her concept of freedom. Reflecting on the ways in which oppression was the cause for her late bloom into queerness, we are invited to discover people and things in the author's life that helped shape and inform her LGBTQ identity. And we come to an understanding of her holistic definition of queerness.Trade Review“This potent memoir assuredly navigates the complicated intersections of identity. . . . The author not only explores how her queer identity formed, but also how the intersection of her other identities—for example, race and gender—compounded the struggles she experienced.” —Kirkus Reviews “De La Cruz’s limber, playful debut collection takes on intersectional identity and is informed by her experiences growing up as an androgynous, Xena-loving, Puerto Rican–Dominican Black girl. . . . the wit and exuberance found here marks her as a worthy new artist.” —Publishers Weekly “Anyone out there feeling like they are alone in their struggle may find a kindred spirit in De La Cruz's telling of her own journey.” —Booklist “De La Cruz's work distinguishes itself from other memoirs in her recognition of how internalized stereotypes can stand in the way of self-acceptance.” —School Library Journal “Sharon is the real deal. Enormously talented, smart, and honest. This is the book I've always wished for, and now that it's here, I never want it to end.” —Nicole J. Georges, Author of Fetch and Calling Dr. Laura “Captures all the internal screaming, dizzying uncertainty, and the powerful, vivid joy of discovering your personal place in queer history.” —Maggie Thrash, Author of Honor Girl “Gorgeous, fun to read, and full of truth.” —Liana Finck, Author of Passing for Human “An absolutely genuine and personal look into intersectionality. Book SynopsisStarred Review from Foreword Reviews. “The book conveys emotions in a deep, visceral way . . . an outstanding memoir about the difficulties of overcoming abuse.”A breathtaking and gut-wrenchingly real graphic memoir of the struggles of an adolescent girl processing the trauma of childhood sexual assault. An immigrant at the age of six, she arrived in a strange new world. Karina was labeled "different" immediately, and a desire to be invisible was born. In a life overshadowed by fear, Karina wanted control.
