Book SynopsisWith gorgeous imagery, visual artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas brings to life the tumultuous history of first contact between Europeans and Indigenous peoples and the early colonization by the Europeans of the northern West Coast.Yahgulanaas uses a blend of traditional and modern art, eschewing the traditional boxes of comic books for the flowing shapes of North Pacific iconography. The panels are filled with colourful and expressive watercolour paintings. The panels of each page, if removed and assembled into one whole image, form a large image reminiscent of a woven robe. The story follows several historical figures, including Johan Adrian Jacobsen (JAJ), who comes to the Haida village of Masset to collect specimens for a German museum, through a time span that includes first contact, the devastation of the smallpox epidemic, and the mass resettlement of disenfranchised peoples, both Indigenous and European.

Book SynopsisThis debut graphic novel tells the story of the 2015 European migrant crisis in Budapest, Hungary through the perspective of Langosh and Peppi, a vagabond and his faithful dog. The pair brings to mind an older, down-on-their-luck Tintin and Snowy with adventures to match. A semi-autobiographical work based on Post's own experiences, Langosh and Peppi escape the pressures of conformity by exploring out-of-the-way places, where they stumble on the vestiges of the war torn region's hidden past. We follow them through streets, alleys, tunnels, train stations, cheap rooms, abandoned buildings and the countryside and witness the effects of various social, political and interpersonal situations through their eyes. The story illustrates a sort of Huckleberry Finn existence, of travelling freely with no responsibilities except finding food and shelter, and meeting fascinating people along the way. However, Langosh and Peppi soon discover the stark difference between choosing a transient lifestyle, and being forced from one's home and country. We meet people whose tragic personal struggles are enmeshed with the national struggles that continue to divide and destroy so many lives, see families torn apart due to ignorance and fear, and witness the disturbing global rise of nationalism. Influenced by Hideo Azuma, Joe Sacco, and Julie Doucet, Post examines the modern dilemma of what it means to be human and to call a place home.

Book SynopsisX-Files meets The Young and the Restless On a typical autumn afternoon, Martha hosts a group of middle-aged women at her suburban home. The day takes a sudden turn when Elisabeth, an estranged friend, turns up unexpectedlyand she isn't the only unwanted guest at the tea party. Martha's sister, Maureen, shows up after years of radio silence, along some painful memories and a lot of confusion. Martha disappears after a simple trip to the backyard for herbs. Martha is the most beloved of the women--but will any of the others be able to look past their own problems long enough to search for her?A satirical portrayal of feminine archetypes in the social landscape of the 60s, Weeding is inspired by soap operas that use unexplained disappearances and repetitive character reanimations to liven up otherwise uneventful plot lines. As a verb, weeding means to remove an inferior or unwanted component of a group or collection. In Weeding, Geneviève Lebleu takes this definition to the extreme with a fable about social exclusion in a world where women turn against one another.

Book SynopsisIn 1932, as famine rages across Ukraine, the Soviet government calls for the harshest punishment for those who keep for themselves even five stalks of grain. When their mother is accused of hoarding and summarily killed, Nadia and Taras must leave their home on a desperate quest for survival.Attempting to navigate a closed country, to stay together, and to stay alive, Nadia and Taras must face secret police, soldiers, and fellow citizens forced to abandon charity and sometimes even humanity in the face of impossible hunger. Unsure who to trust and unable to find refuge, they search for somewhere, anywhere, where they can be safe. Historical fiction at its finest, Five Stalks of Grain is powerfully written and beautifully illustrated, drawing on Ukrainian artistic traditions to tell a story of loss, grief, and hardship with delicate strength. It is a record of a time of profound suffering and a reckoning with the human cost of a tragedy shaped by politics and policy.Trade ReviewTwo siblings scramble to survive during the Stalin-era 1932–1933 Ukrainian famine in this delicately drawn, tightly plotted historical graphic novel [...] Galadza’s idiosyncratic layouts, such as repeated faces in various emotional states, also lend an unfinished, sketchbook feel that matches the account’s emotional intensity and ambiguous ending. Book SynopsisHe is the law - and you better believe it!Judge, jury and executioner, Judge Dredd is the brutal comic book cop policing the chaotic future urban jungle of Mega-City One, created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra and launching in the pages of 2000 AD in 1977.But what began as a sci-fi action comic quickly evolved into a searing satire on hardline, militarised policing and ‘law and order’ politics, its endless inventiveness and ironic humour acting as a prophetic warning about our world today - and with important lessons for our future.Blending comic book history with contemporary radical theories on policing, I Am The Law takes key Dredd stories from the last 45 years and demonstrates how they provide a unique wake up call about our gradual, and not so gradual, slide towards authoritarian policing. From the politicisation of policing to ‘zero tolerance’, from violent suppression of protest to the rise of the surveillance state, I Am The Law examines how a comic book warned us about the chilling endgame of today's 'law and order' politics.Trade Review"I cannot recall a more timely book ... This is not just a celebration of the future fictional character: it is a thoughtful, and often alarming examination of the state of law enforcement in a liberal, or neo-liberal, society." – Nick Lezard, The Spectator"Should leave you incandescent with rage at the injustices of our own world ... a thoroughly researched book that dives deep into the history of policing and totalitarian politics...to make its often damning case." – Wyrd Science

Book SynopsisSerena Katt’s grandfather, whom she knew as Opa, was a ‘Sunday’s Child’, one of the lucky ones for whom everything always went right. Opa left a brief account of his childhood and teenage years, but it is opaque, a story of prizes won and boyish adventures. In Sunday’s Child, Serena Katt interrogates Opa’s version of his life. Was it really so innocent? Did he really not know what the Nazis were doing? He joined the Hitler Youth at the age of ten, swearing an oath of loyalty to the Fuhrer. From then on the games he played were actually military training, designed to produce a ‘new German youth … violent, domineering, unafraid, cruel … which the world will fear’. At seventeen, in the final desperate days of the war, he is called up but his luck holds. He is sent home and thus survives the war.Sunday’s Child marks the debut of a remarkable graphic novelist. Book SynopsisA new book in Bryan Talbot's award-winning science fiction graphic novels series, starring the legendary character Luther ArkwrightThe Adventures of Luther Arkwright, first serialised in 1978, is considered by many to be the first British graphic novel. Praised by many writers and artists, including Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Jean Giroud (Moebius) and Michael Moorcock, the ground-breaking, experimental adult SF story was a seminal work, inspiring and influencing many comic creators. Its sequel, Heart Of Empire, was published in 2001. Both books have been continually in print since they were first published.Set fifty years later, The Legend of Luther Arkwright is another stand-alone story. While still maintaining total continuity with the Arkwright mythos, it is a different kind of adult adventure. Pursued across multiple historically divergent parallel worlds, both utopian and dystopian, and facing a far superior adversary, Arkwright battles to save humanity from mass destruction; his only edge is his experience and force of will. The Legend of Luther Arkwright, beautifully drawn by master storyteller and Eisner Award-winning comics creator Bryan Talbot, is a milestone in British comics history.Trade ReviewBryan Talbot is the most important comic creator in Great Britain. -- Teddy Jamieson * Herald Scotland *Superbly designed, beautifully conceived, admirably written - everything about them is terrific. * Philip Pullman, on the GRANDVILLE series *I've never come across a fictional world as fully-realised as Bryan Talbot's Grandville... Book Synopsis35 YEARS IN THE MAKING: THE MOST ANTICIPATED GRAPHIC NOVEL IN RECENT HISTORY *A GUARDIAN 'BOOKS OF 2021' PICK*The year is 1964. Bailey doesn't realize he is about to fulfil his tragic destiny when he walks into a US Army recruitment office. Secretive, damaged, innocent, trying to forget a past and looking for a future, Bobby is the perfect candidate for a secret US government experiment, an unholy continuation of a genetics program that was discovered in Nazi Germany nearly 20 years earlier in the waning days of World War II. Bailey's only ally and protector, Sergeant McFarland, intervenes, which sets off a chain of cascading events that spin out of everyone's control. As the monsters of the title multiply, becoming real and metaphorical, the story reaches a crescendo of moral reckoning.A 360-page tour de force of visual storytelling, Monsters' narrative canvas is copious: part familial drama, part thriller, part metaphysical journey, it is an intimate portrait of individuals struggling to reclaim their lives and an epic political odyssey that plays across two generations of American history.Monsters is rendered in Barry Windsor-Smith's impeccable pen-and-ink technique, the visual storytelling, with its sensitivity to gesture and composition, the most sophisticated of the artist's career. There are passages of heartbreaking tenderness, of excruciating pain, of redemption and sacrifice, and devastating violence. Monsters is surely one of the most intense graphic novels ever drawn.Trade ReviewBarry Windsor-Smith has for over three decades, been working on Monsters. Almost twenty years ago I read an unfinished version and was shocked and astonished at the power and delicacy of the storytelling, by the honesty of the family relationships, by the feeling that this was being created by someone willing to reveal too much and go too deep in order to tell the story he had to tell. That it is completed and that it will be released to the world is something that's genuinely exciting for any of us who care about comics, or stories, or the place where art and imagination meet -- Neil GaimanNearly 40 years in the making, Monsters is surely Windsor-Smith's magnum opus. It demands re-reading, not only in order to take in the intricacies of the densely constructed narrative but to marvel further at the meticulously crafted artwork. -- Stephen Jewell * SFX *It's been 16 years since Barry Windsor-Smith's last book and in Monsters, you can see the work of those days and years on every page and panel... His classically influenced style...fills the pages with drawings and sequences you can easily lose yourself in the depths of... he has now created a work that his legacy will be forever tied to, melding his stylistic artwork with a story that explores trauma and grief in ways that he has never been able to before. -- Scott Cederlund * GamesRadar+ *Forcefully told and thoroughly affecting drama. Windsor-Smith's return is big news... Monsters hums with suppressed violence and regret, and Windsor-Smith renders both with real power. His command of pose and gesture...brings his cast to life. -- James Smart * Guardian *Monsters is drawn and inked with extraordinary delicacy, its pace is often meditative and it is just as interested in family relationships as it is in superpowers. Book SynopsisAuthor Edouard Cour revisits one of the greatest Greek myths by painting the often-heroic Herakles as, well . . . somewhat of a jerk. Crude and stubborn at times, in little glimpses we meet a man—half-human, after all—with a psychology more complex than he appears, entangled in guilt over the ghosts who have haunted him since childhood. A mournful sadness seizes him as he crosses the fleeting silhouettes of a woman and her three children. "Friends or foe, all those who cross his path end up stiff and worm food," comments Linos, the ghost of his childhood music teacher. Brimming with pathos and dark humor, this portrait of Herakles is a graphic whirlwind leaving little respite and often revealing beautiful surprises. This second volume follows the titular hero on four more of his epic quests, each one a stepping-stone in his growth as both man and god.

Book SynopsisThis third and final volume focuses on Irena's later years, flashing back to her ongoing efforts to reunite the children she saved with their families, despite the tragic consequences many of those parents faced in the Nazi prison camps. Her mission to help those orphaned find new homes led to her worldwide recognition, including being nominated for a Nobel Prize, in the years shortly before her own passing.Trade ReviewASSOCIATION OF JEWISH LIBRARIES -- This three-volume graphic novel treatment of the life of the famed Irena Sendler is a remarkable achievement. The first volume was published in French in 2017 and the last two volumes were published in English in 2020. All four authors and artists involved tell an age-appropriate, emotional story of Irena Sendlerowa, the righteous gentile who saved over 2500 Jewish children in wartime Warsaw. Their careful research goes further than most of the present biographies for young people by separating her life experiences into three volumes. Book One: Wartime Ghetto, describes how Irena, a young social worker, began her resistance work in the German-occupied Warsaw Ghetto of the 1940s. The amazing Where's Waldo style of artwork provides numerous ways a reader can immerse themselves in ghetto life quite powerfully by simply staring at the opening two-page spread. The dark color palette recalls the period and sets the right mood. Irena saves children, gets arrested, refuses to reveal her contacts and is ultimately saved from death with bribes to the guards. The artists use the contrivance of an adorable little white dog named Shepsi that at first protects ghetto children and later accompanies Irena and her resistance network. The antics of this feisty little companion allows readers a respite from the many tragic scenes of Nazi cruelty, poverty, and smuggled babies, and will especially appeal to younger readers. The second volume, Book Two: Children of the Ghetto, begins after the war in 1947, focusing on Irena's imprisonment by the Nazis and her desperate search for the mostly-orphaned children, along with her attempts to reunite them with the remnants of their families. The narrative jumps back and forth in time to when Irena visits Yad Vashem and tells her story in 1983 upon receiving honors and acclaim in Israel. The third volume, Book Three: Life After the Ghetto finds Irena still in Poland in her later years, looking back on her life and her accomplishments. The color palette has been brightened, she has a new little dog, and her name is now recognized around the world. The authors repeatedly highlight Irena's regrets that she was not able to do enough and save more children. She died in 2008 at the age of 98. The books should be read in order and although there may be some confusion from the time-jumps, the artistic style and colors are the clues to the time period in Irena's life. This book will appeal to anyone who likes graphic novels, and although it is not a light-hearted read, it is a wonderful testament to a truly righteous person.

When she starts her employment in formal service on the grounds of an opulent country manor, she has no idea that her own personal revolution is about to begin. Selfless, dutiful, and just a touch naive, she takes to both her place as a parlor maid and to her new roommate, the bookish and progressive lady’s maid, Esther. In another time, the two women would have kept one another’s company forever in their little attic bedroom, living out their days in the employ of a Lord. But it’s now the dawn of a new age. The expanding empire has brought with it not only plundered wealth, but worldliness and new ideas. Suffragists agitate in the street, idle-rich bohemians challenge sexual mores, and Patience and Esther slowly come to realize the world is wider and full of more adventure and opportunity than they ever imagined . . . so long as they find the will to seize it. Sensual, sweet, and beautifully illustrated, PATIENCE & ESTHER is a steamy period romance and an inspirational erotic journey across the epic sweep of history, from the end of a gilded age to the start of an uncharted future.Trade Review"This charmer serves scorching heat in a sugar coating." – PUBLISHERS WEEKLY "An engrossing and delightful read." – NEWSARAMA "A tender, nuanced, and sensual adult graphic novel." – FRESH FICTION “Searle's work revolves around relationships, often but not always romantic ones. Out of stock

Book SynopsisMadame Livingstone is based on the true story of the unlikely partnership between a Belgian and an African who were responsible for the sinking of a German battleship in the Congo during the First World War. Aviator Gaston Mercier, lieutenant in the Royal Belgian Army, arrives at Lake Tanganyika, Congo in 1915 on orders to sink a critical German warship, the Graf Von Götzen. To find out the ship’s exact position, he is assigned a guide, an enigmatic, mixed-race African and the supposed son of the famous explorer David Livingstone who is nicknamed “Mrs. Livingstone” for the Scottish kilt he wears. Little by little, while the war between Belgian and German colonial powers rages on and the pair hunt down the Graf Von Götzen, the young Belgian pilot learns more about the land around him from Mrs. Livingstone and discovers the irrevocable and tragic effects of colonialism on the local people. A historical fiction story of adventure and friendship against the backdrop of World War I in Africa, Madame Livingstone was originally published in France by Glénat in 2014. The graphic novel is authored by historian and comics specialist Christophe Cassiau-Haurie and Congo's unique beauty is presented in full color illustrations by beloved Congolese artist Barly Baruti.Trade Review“The complexities of war are explored with a curious what-if twist in this elegantly drawn adventure. […] a well-researched drama of human connections forged in an inhumane period.” —Publishers Weekly“Madame Livingstone uses a World War I conflict in the Congo as the backdrop for an exciting adventure, glimpsing into the country’s history of colonial exploitation. […] Madame Livingstone is a rousing historical tale. Its excellent, authentic art is attentive to details when picturing boats, airplanes, uniforms, and Congolese clothing and landscapes.”—Foreword Reviews"There have been countless narratives about people who are "torn" between two racial heritages, but for the most part, Madame Livingstone felt like a fresh and nuanced character study. Livingstone knows exactly who he is; he has an affinity for his famous father and Scottish heritage, but his central motivation is to protect his African family and community and see the European war in Central Africa end as quickly as possible. The result felt like a nuanced meditation on the forms resistance can take within a colonial system. [...] [A] unique and important graphic novel." —2021 VLA Graphic Novel Diversity Award Committee“Belgian comics curator Cassiau-Haurie (Le Singe Jaune) and Congolese cartoonist Baruti (Chaos Debout à Kinshasa) team up for a stellar historical graphic novel about another partnership, in the context of European colonialism in Africa during World War I. […] Based on a true incident, this beautifully rendered and rousing graphic novel will give readers naïve about Belgian colonialism an entry point for understanding viewpoints and outcomes.” — Library Journal

Book SynopsisA child is born in an ancient distant land, celebrated by the shamen Ozbeg who senses the spirit of greatness inside him. This boy, Temudjin, must be guided to listen to the voices of nature around him, for one day, he will lead the Mongol clans to glory as the great Genghis Khan. A lush, lyrical, almost operatic fable speculating on the youth of the first Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. Filled with mysticism and surreal visions, this grand epic takes on a fantasy quality lightly infused with just enough nuggets of history to set in time. Torn between a destiny he is told to have and a life he would otherwise chose for himself, the mind of a legendary warlord is laid bare to readers in a cinematic and poetic narrative breathtakingly illustrated by Antoine Carrion.Trade ReviewPUBLISHERS WEEKLY -- Ozanam (Klaw) fuses biography and fantasy in this ethereal graphic novel imagining Genghis Khan’s reborn spirit, Temudjin. Born to a human and a wolf spirit in a remote Mongolian village centuries after Khan’s death, Temudjin is prophesied by the shaman Ozbeg to unite clans and overthrow tyrants. Ozbeg raises Temudjin, teaching him to tap into the spirit realm, and Temudjin marries the spirit Ayami. As he grows up, Temudjin uses the realm to escape life’s torments, defeat enemies, and win over clan leaders. But while he grapples with the brutality of Khan’s legacy, he still follows his path: quarreling with his closest allies, mirroring Khan’s rifts with trusted generals; betraying Ayami by marrying a human woman, paralleling Khan’s adultery; and employing his same ruthless war tactics. Carrion’s artwork juxtaposes sprawling landscapes with intimate close-ups, atmospheric darkness with bright colors, and rigid panel structures with dreamlike interludes. Temudjin ultimately unites Mongolia, exemplifying the best of Khan’s leadership, but then follows the darker side of his inherited power to expand his dynasty into China because “his destiny summons him there. And he must see it to the very end.” Fans of Luen Yang’s Boxers & Saints will relish this quasi-historical quest. (Nov.)
