Book SynopsisDiscusses in the practical and theoretical aspects of one-period asset allocation, i.e. market Modeling, invariants estimation, portfolia evaluation, and portfolio optimization in the prexence of estimation risk The book is software based, many of the exercises simulate in Matlab the solution to practical problems and can be downloaded from the book's web-siteTrade ReviewFrom the reviews: This exciting new book takes a fresh look at asset allocation and offers up a masterly account of this important subject. The quantitative emphasis and included MATLAB software make it a must-read for the mathematically oriented investment professional. Peter Carr, Head of Quantitative Research, Bloomberg LP, Director of Masters in Mathematical Finance program, NYU Meucci’s Risk and Asset Allocation is one of those rare books that takes a completely fresh look at a well-studied problem, optimal financial portfolio allocation based on statistically estimated models of risk and expected return. Designed for graduate students or quantitatively oriented asset managers, Meucci provides a sophisticated and integrated treatment, from investment theory, to optimization methods, to statistical analysis of multi-variate return data, through computational implementation of the results. This is rigorous and relevant! Darrel Duffie, Professor of Graduate Business School, Stanford University A wonderful book! Mathematically rigorous and yet practical, heavily illustrated with graphs and worked examples, Attilio Meucci has written a comprehensive treatment of asset allocation starting from statistical concepts, covering investment primitives, and leading to portfolio optimization in a Bayesian context with parameter uncertainty. Bob Litterman, Head of Quantitative Resources, Goldman Sachs Asset Management This book takes the reader on a journey through portfolio management starting with the basics and reaching some fascinating terrain. Attilio Meucci shows a real talent for explaining the most difficult of subjects in a very clear manner. Paul Wilmott, wilmott.com "This book presents a detailed and well-explained introduction to one-period asset allocation techniques … . the book gives an impressive and comprehensive introduction to static one-period asset allocation. It explains most of the concepts intuitively and with a minimal mathematical machinery. … For practitioners, the book serves as a theoretical basis of their actual work. For students of finance and economics it gives a self-contained overview of the main quantitative concepts in the subject." (Ludger Overbeck, SIAM Review, Vol. 48 (3), 2006) "This book delves into the classical mathematics of portfolio optimization with a few nods to more recent developments in risk measurement such as value-at-risk and copulas. … For anyone with an interest in the mathematics of portfolio optimization, the book is certainly worth a look. … The author covers a wealth of statistical and optimization techniques that are worth reading about." (www.riskbook.com, May, 2006) "The book offers a wide exposition of the main approaches to asset allocation, starting from the classical models up to the recent developments in portfolio management. … By virtue of the sequential structure of the subjects and the simple but efficacious mathematical treatment, the monograph is useful for graduate students and quantitatively-oriented practitioners too. … The book is complemented by online resources, consisting of software applications performed by MATLAB … ." • Strategic Management of Global Manufacturing

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Strategic Management of Global Manufacturing

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe preceding process of globalization and the continuously rising competitive pressure on manufacturing companies in more developed economies unveiled the limits of classical site-focused optimization approaches. The focus of network optimization shifts ever more towards an integrative view of manufacturing networks, striving for a harmonization of the strategy-, configuration- and coordination levels. This book presents such an integrative approach to the strategic management of manufacturing networks. Besides strategic network requirements, this book discusses the derivation of an optimal global footprint and the optimization of network coordination activities. Special attention is paid to the site roles concept, especially to the concept of 'lead factory'. A large number of up-to-date cases from the producing industry enrich the book and provide the reader with vivid examples for the application of the presented concepts. Hence, this book is a must-read for both practitioners and academic researchers.Trade ReviewFrom the book reviews:“The authors’ aim is to explore strategic management challenges around global manufacturing networks. … In terms of content and structure, the book follows a logical progression from theory to application, with plenty of examples thrown in. … it all comes together nicely, making the book both a pleasant and informative read. … an excellent source for key concepts and their application and the numerous and detailed industry examples are both illustrative and enjoyable to read.” (Jannis Angelis, Production Planning & Control, October, 2014)Table of ContentsDevelopment of Production Management- from Site to Network Optimisation.- A Model for Network Design.- Clarification of the Initial Strategic Situation.- The Network Configuration.- Network Coordination.- Analysis and Design of Networks in Practice.- Outlook and Summary.

  • Project Management with Dynamic Scheduling:

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Project Management with Dynamic Scheduling:

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe topic of this book is known as dynamic scheduling, and is used to refer to three dimensions of project management and scheduling: the construction of a baseline schedule and the analysis of a project schedule’s risk as preparation of the project control phase during project progress. This dynamic scheduling point of view implicitly assumes that the usability of a project’s baseline schedule is rather limited and only acts as a point of reference in the project life cycle. Consequently, a project schedule should especially be considered as nothing more than a predictive model that can be used for resource efficiency calculations, time and cost risk analyses, project tracking and performance measurement, and so on.In this book, the three dimensions of dynamic scheduling are highlighted in detail and are based on and inspired by a combination of academic research studies at Ghent University (www.ugent.be), in-company trainings at Vlerick Business School (www.vlerick.com) and consultancy projects at OR-AS (www.or-as.be). First, the construction of a project baseline schedule is a central theme throughout the various chapters of the book, and is discussed from a complexity point of view with and without the presence of project resources. Second, the creation of an awareness of the weak parts in a baseline schedule is discussed at the end of the two baseline scheduling parts as schedule risk analysis techniques that can be applied on top of the baseline schedule. Third, the baseline schedule and its risk analyses can be used as guidelines during the project control step where actual deviations can be corrected within the margins of the project’s time and cost reserves. The second edition of this book has seen corrections, additions and amendments in detail throughout the book. Moreover Chapter 15 on "Dynamic Scheduling with ProTrack" has been completely rewritten and extended with a section on "ProTrack as a research tool".Trade ReviewFrom the reviews of the second edition:“This book is brought in such a way that it is able to inform a wide audience about the current state-of-the-art principles in dynamic project scheduling. The target audience can consist of undergraduate or MBA students following a project management course, participants of company trainings with a focus on scheduling or software users who search for added value when using software tools. … I recommend this book as a compliment to your project management studies and especially for those already working in this area.” (Inspire and Action blog, inspireandaction.wordpress.com, December, 2013)Table of ContentsPreface.- I Scheduling without resources.- II Scheduling with resources.- III Project control.- IV Scheduling with software.- V Conclusions.- Index.

Book SynopsisThis textbook presents the basics of game theory both on an undergraduate level and on a more advanced mathematical level. It is the second, revised version of the successful 2008 edition. The book covers most topics of interest in game theory, including cooperative game theory. Part I presents introductions to all these topics on a basic yet formally precise level. It includes chapters on repeated games, social choice theory, and selected topics such as bargaining theory, exchange economies, and matching. Part II goes deeper into noncooperative theory and treats the theory of zerosum games, refinements of Nash equilibrium in strategic as well as extensive form games, and evolutionary games. Part III covers basic concepts in the theory of transferable utility games, such as core and balancedness, Shapley value and variations, and nucleolus. Some mathematical tools on duality and convexity are collected in Part IV. Every chapter in the book contains a problem section. Hints, answers and solutions are included.Trade Review“It can be used at an advanced undergraduate course or a graduate course. … I found the book very well written and appropriate for a game theory course focused on business and economics students and applications. Some of the problems are very challenging but most of them are at the appropriate level and the reader will have some fun and learn from them. This is a book that I recommend if you are interested in game theory … .” (Philosophy, Religion and Science Book Reviews, bookinspections.wordpress.com, June, 2016)“This book is therefore a very successful work on the task of providing the largest number of readers, independently of the initial levels of knowledge, an introduction to game theory simultaneously accessible and rigorous, with a wide exemplification of applications, allowing them to achieve efficiently an advanced level of knowledge in the field. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides a theoretical, empirical, and pragmatic understanding of social dilemmas (SDs). A SD is a social situation where cooperation maximizing collective or social profit is different from defection maximizing individual profit. Problems arise when too many group members choose to pursue individual profit and immediate satisfaction rather than behave in the group’s best long-term interests. The problems include an environmental problem and various types of urban, economic, and political problems. Most books treating SDs are not monographs but are proceedings or omnibus volumes written by different researchers. Few monographs have been published for SDs, but those few deal only with basic theories and empirical findings. This book, by contrast, is a monograph by a single author and provides complete coverage from basic theories in Part I to applied theories and pragmatic solutions for urban, transportation, and environmental problems in Parts II and III. Various types of strategies are proposed in this book to overcome the problems caused by SDs in various situations based on the basic theories of those dilemmas. The strategies are psychological and structural ones. The book includes theories, empirical evidence in experiments, and practical policies in the real world for these strategies. Thus, the work effectively provides a bridge between basic behavioral scientists, applied behavioral scientists, and practitioners. With this useful source, basic scientists will understand how to apply their scientific knowledge to the real world and also will encounter new scientific problems that should be solved scientifically. Applied researchers and specialists will become familiar with new solutions through basic research on SDs and will be made aware of new pragmatic problems that should be solved with a practical approach.Table of ContentsWhat Are Social Dilemmas?.- Various Types of Social Dilemmas.- Strategies for Solving Social Dilemmas: Structural Strategy and Psychological Strategy.- Theory for Behavior modification Process for Cooperation.- “Objective–Information–Provision” Method.- “Inducing Temporary Cooperation” Method.- Basic Theory for Communication to Change Attitudes and Behavior.- Communicative Strategies to Change Attitudes and Behavior.- Successes and Crimes of the Structural Strategy.- For Introduction of a Structural Strategy.- Dilemmas of a High Order Produced by Structural Strategy.- Public Acceptance of Structural Strategy.- Concluding Remarks.

Book SynopsisFor many decades, play has been placed outside of learning spheres and only meant for children. What can be observed now is a revival of the phenomenal characteristics and potentials found in strong play experiences across life-long learning target groups and applied situations as well as broadly in the product, service and experience development industry. The effect play can have on participants and surroundings can be extremely effective. This book provides operational design guidelines on how to find strong balances in the making of specific play-based designs as well as how to involve users and stakeholders in the process of play design making. Through curious mindsets and surprising features, designers, learners and innovators are moved to new types of perspectives, approaches, beliefs and routines. This is considered to be a vital ingredient in the 21st century and of the coming decade because of rapid changes in school sectors and industry markets. This book provides frameworks and theories at a more operational level, which can guide those interested in designing for particular play experiences at a hands-on level.

Book SynopsisThis book takes a fresh and critical look at the leading sources of global risk — terrorism, disease, crime, poverty, environmental damage and others — and sets out a practical way to respond far better than we have to each risk area.Drawing from his state-of-the-art knowledge of global strategy as applied in the business world, the author provides analysis, insight, realistic strategies, and hope for a better way forward. His foresight has already been demonstrated. Early in the year 2000, he wrote: “Sadly, the history of mass terrorism is just about to be written. … Even the US is no longer a safe haven from foreign or local terrorists. … US policing has done little to limit the operations of terrorist Osama bin Laden. … The vulnerability of large government and civilian buildings and even military targets has also contributed to an increase in the scale of potential harm.”Without a more informed set of strategies and better global leadership, the catastrophe of 9/11 will only be a forerunner of many more disasters in the future. We can do much better. This important book shows us how.Table of ContentsWorld of Risk -- World of Opportunity; Scale and Nature of the Challenge; A New Approach to Strategy; Next Generation Strategies; Leadership and Engagement; A Message of Hope
