Oxford University Press, USA Knowledge to Action EvidenceBased Health Care in Context EvidenceBased Health Care in Context
Book SynopsisHealth services can and should be improved by applying research findings about best practice. Yet, in Knowledge to Action?, the authors explore why it nevertheless proves notoriously difficult to implement change based on research evidence in the face of strong professional views and complex organizational structures. The book draws on a large body of evidence acquired in the course of nearly fifty in-depth case studies, following attempts to introduce evidence-based practice in the UK NHS over more than a decade. Using qualitative methods to study hospital and primary care settings, they are able to shed light on why some of these attempts succeeded where others faltered. By opening up the intricacies and complexities of change in the NHS, they reveal the limitations of the simplistic approaches to implementing research or introducing evidence-based health care. A unique synthesis of evidence, the book brings together data from 1,400 interviews with doctors, nurses, and managers, as well as detailed observations and documentary analysis. The authors provide an analysis, rooted in a range of theoretical perspectives, that underlines the intimate links between organizational structures and cultures and the utilization of knowledge, and draws conclusions which will be of significance for other areas of public management. Their findings have implications for the utilization of knowledge in situations where there is a professional tradition working within a politically sensitive blend of public service, managerial accountability, and technical expertise. Knowledge to Action? will be of interest to Academics, Researchers, and Advanced Students of Organizational Behaviour, Public and Health Management, and Evidence-Based Medicine; and also of particular interest to Practitioners, Clinicians, and Public Health Managers concerned with implementing change to clinical practice.Trade ReviewIt represents a breath of fresh air and contains lessons for those both producing and implementing evidence in EBM (Evidence Based Medicine). Although written as an academic book, it's readibility and numerous case studies allow it to drift close to being a 'how to' manual for implementing EBM. British Medicine Journal (BJM) Based on more than 50 studies of attempts to implement evidence based health care in different NHS settings, it provides a comprehensive and thoughtful review... Oxford University Press, USA Manufacturing Rationality The Engineering Foundations of the Managerial Revolution Author Yehouda Shenhav May2002
Book SynopsisManagement is a powerful mode of thought and code of conduct in the modern world, closely associated with the American way and a natural extension of economic progress. This is a book about the history and development of management and managerial rationality in the United States in the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century.Through careful analysis of contemporary records in the engineering profession, the author shows how management invented itself and carved its own domain in the face of hostility and resistance from both manufacturers and workers. The book demonstrates how the new language and rhetoric of management emerged, and how it confronted and replaced the language of traditional capitalism: ''system'' instead of ''individuals''; ''jobs'' instead of ''natural rights''; ''planning'' instead of ''free initiatives''.Manufacturing Rationality can be read simultaneously as an historical account of the genesis of modern management, a chapter in the history of American capitalism, a critical analysis of industrial engineering, and as a sociology of (managerial) knowledge.Trade ReviewReview from previous edition This book is original and refreshing. * Robert R. Locke, Business History *the book tells an absorbing story. * Judith Maas, Bookshelf, Sloan Managment Review, Spring 2000. *Yehouda Shenhav shows that the American system of management required elaborate social construction. Managers had to justify thier existence vis-a-vis owners and workers, and it took a great deal of effort to 'normalize' their social power. This book makes an imortant critical contribution to our understanding of how the large corporation emerged in the U.S and deserves to be read by anyone interested in the origins of American 'managerialism'. * Neil Fligstein 18/03/1999 *Yehouda Shenhav rewrites business history in this magisterial account of the role of engineers in the American management revolution. That revolution, Shenhav demonstrates, was spearheaded by engineers, whose rational, calculated precepts of work organization depoliticized the relationship between labor and capital. Modern management's rhetorical claim to neutrality stands on this technical foundation. This elegant and compelling study undercuts conventional efficiency arguments about the rise of modern management. * Frank Dobbin, Princeton University, 1999 *Table of ContentsIntroduction ; 1. Taylor & Francis Ltd CSR Sustainability and Leadership
Book SynopsisWith the acceptance of CSR and Sustainability as important business performance indicators, it is timely now to assess the impact that leadership has on the development of these processes. CSR, Sustainability, and Leadership seeks to explore the integration of these three elements through an examination of concerns and trends in contemporary organisations. The authors discuss empirical and theoretical studies which focus on processes and practices which inform the field. Organisations wish not only to participate in responsible behaviour, but also actively lead within their local environments. However, businesses are failing in their execution of CSR because of ineffective leadership. Business leaders are central to an organisation's purpose in the world and this book will inform a robust discussion about social issues which are pressing to scholars, policymakers, not-for-profit organisations and students.Trade Review"I agree with the key message of the book that sustainability leadership cannot be taught solely from the perspective of traditional leadership theory; here the book makes a useful contribution, especially in chapters two, three and seven." -Paul IlesTable of ContentsSection A: Leading for Sustainability 1.
