  • A Business Leader’s Guide to Philosophy

Springer International Publishing AG A Business Leader’s Guide to Philosophy

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides a unique introduction for business leaders to the philosophical lexicon of classical and contemporary ideas—for and against—that are relevant to business and those destined to lead it. Rather than presenting the reader with a ‘philosophy of leadership’ the author uses his experiences in academia and as a leader in business to illustrate the practical application of philosophical ideas and methodologies covering the art and science of being a business leader: motivating stakeholders to deliver the initial phase of a business plan for a new product or service; processing information (and risky ‘hidden-information’) that brings the company vision into reality; and ethically managing relationships to enhance the quality of decision-making and its outcomes. Creative aspiration, knowledge and ethical character are the three pillars of leadership. Within that construct, this book challenges leaders to seek their own path to self-development inspired by ideas that shape the ecology of capitalism and the opportunities it provides stakeholders to endow meaning and dignity to their lives through their participation in business. Table of Contentsintroduction.- Part 1: Some philosophical foundations.- Part 2: Managing creativity…birthing the dream.- Part 3: Interpreting information to deliver the dream.- Part 4: Ethics and business…uniting the dream makers. • Solutions for Business, Culture and Religion in Eastern Europe and Beyond: The 2016 Griffiths School of Management Annual Conference on Business, Entrepreneurship and Ethics (GSMAC)

Springer International Publishing AG Solutions for Business, Culture and Religion in Eastern Europe and Beyond: The 2016 Griffiths School of Management Annual Conference on Business, Entrepreneurship and Ethics (GSMAC)

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the increased necessity of organizations to encourage human talent in the globalized economy, with particular emphasis on the impact in Eastern Europe. Featuring contributions presented at the 7th Annual Griffiths School of Management International Conference on Business and Ethics (GSMAC) organized by Emanuel University of Oradea, this book presents in-depth analysis of the economic, social and religious implications of the transition from low cost of labor to increased human talent in Eastern Europe and offers multiple theoretical and practical solutions. In 2004, Klaus Schwab, president and founder of the World Economic Forum, stated that the old era of capitalism and socialism is being replaced by a new era of “talentalism”. The true competitive advantage of organizations and nations is increasingly becoming human talent, defined as the ability to “have new ideas that have value”. Nations and organizations are exploring ways to reform their education systems and organizational structures in order to train, foster and encourage human talent. In Eastern Europe since the fall of communism in 1989, the competitive advantage of the region has been low cost of labor. However, since the integration within the European Union, millions of Eastern Europeans have left their home countries rendering the “low-wage competitive advantage” almost obsolete. In addition, the migration of able-working individuals has left behind mainly children and pensioners, placing a disproportionately heavy burden upon public and government services. It is within this context that the contents of this book explore the impact of the increased need of high human talent on Eastern European countries. Featuring contributions around topics such as poverty, healthcare management, cross-border cooperation, education systems, and religious influence on economic development, this book will be of interest of scholars, researchers, students and policy-makers interested in the business development and economic growth of Eastern Europe. Table of ContentsPreface.- Chapter 1 Improving Socio-Economic Opportunities for the Poor.- Chapter 2 An Empirical Analysis of Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory of Work Motivation on Hospital Employees in Jordan.- Chapter 3 Assessment of Employment: An Essential Process in Increasing the Efficiency of use of Human Capital within the Romanian Health Care Facilities.- Chapter 4 The Impact of Cross-Border Cooperation on Human Resources Employed in Local Administration.- Chapter 5 Am I to be an Entrepreneur?.- Chapter 6 Scientific Selling: Improving Sales Performance through Applied Psychology.- Chapter 7 The Need for Mentoring in the Preuniversity Educational System.- Chapter 8 Recruitment and Selection of Human Resources in the Romanian Organizations.- Chapter 9 Identifying the Main Factors of Workplace Flexibility.- Chapter 10 Compounding in Romania.- Chapter 11 How Religion Influences Economic Development.- Chapter 12 The Compatibility between the Music Expectations of Church Leaders and the Training of Church Musicians in Romania.

Thank you for this advancement to our practice! (Ralph A. Oliva, Executive Director, Institute for the Study of Business Markets Professor of Marketing, Smeal College of Business, Penn State University) "Proliferation of similar products, increasing complexity of customer needs (moving from stand-alone products to solutions), and high price pressures will force b2b marketers to focus on brand building. If you are a b2b marketer already thinking along those lines, then this book is the weightiest corroboration you could have asked for." (TMCnet, October 2006) "When it comes to marketing, there is no name bigger than Phillip Kotler. … In this book, co-authored with … Professor Waldemar Pfoertsch, Kotler makes a case for brand management in business-to-business (b2b) marketing as well. … The core proposition in the book is that in the new globalized world ‘being known’ rather than ‘being one of many’ is the need of the hour. … How does branding help in overcoming … challenges? • Corporate Political Responsibility: How

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Corporate Political Responsibility: How

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book demonstrates how companies can effectively promote their business by assuming political responsibility and expanding their investment concept to include a political component. It shows that the success of companies is crucially dependent on socio-political conditions. In other words: politically sustainable management is a business case. Therefore companies should take a closer look at the opportunities at the interface of politics and business. To date, there has not been a satisfactory assessment of the issue of Corporate Political Responsibility (CPR), which combines a conceptual framework with practical measures for implementation. This book remedies that oversight, and shows how companies can develop the necessary attitude and operate in concrete CPR fields of action, illustrated by diagrams and examples. While doing so, the author explains how CPR is different from shere lobbying or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).The author provides an overview of the public realm and its actors, and shows how, through political contributions, they can strengthen the performance of the state and thus their own performance. Companies have unique resources for doing so, and in their own interest they should get involved: being impartial in particular, but partial in principle - when it comes to our liberal way of life as such. • Forget Classroom Learning: A Practical Guide to

Academic Foundation Forget Classroom Learning: A Practical Guide to

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisForget Classroom Learning is differentially explaining the theory of management and describes real life from the manager’s point of view. In doing this, it offers a uniquely illustrated, practical and concrete guide to conducting your business life more positively and to becoming a better manager. It was a conventional belief that one has to learn in classroom theory, to become a manager. But, the target keeps moving; events and people do not always conform long enough to be planned and controlled. The ways and means of management, therefore, involve continual experimentation with new approaches to old and new problems. Remember the maxim: “Try it, fix it, do it”.Learning by doing is the best and the only way of gaining knowledge as classroom learning is nothing but the mental exercise of established knowledge attained through practice. But over a period of time classroom learning has become the primary means of learning due to lack of proper persuasion of knowledge through practical exposure and inadequacy of appropriate knowledge of instructors because of their sole dependency on theory and text rather than practical experience. So this book will help you to get the practical exposure through learning by doing rather than classroom learning.Trade Review“...at least two of the present publications, I have minutely gone through, thus empowered to introspect towards meaningful direction of human life. Book SynopsisThis book focuses on leadership and strategy, corporate governance, operational excellence, and corporate social responsibility. In doing so, it offers both conceptual perspectives and case studies on these topics that are targeted at business executives who want to develop and mature towards being successful value creators in their leadership roles. Authored by the former CEO of National Australia Bank (NAB), Don Argus, and business school professor Danny Samson, the book provides insights on the strategic leadership factors that make a significant and positive difference when they are executed effectively and, in contrast, what happens when ineffective leadership/ strategy are deployed. It proposes and illustrates core leadership axioms, and also delves into sustainable development as an element of strategy. The authors do this by developing and illustrating core concepts that relate to the two major case study companies of NAB and BHP.Readers will be particularly interested in the core elements of leadership and strategy, and the grounded reality of how they operated in the case studies. The authors bring insiders’ and leaders’ perspectives to these topics, including tables that document shareholder value creation, and the logic behind strategic decisions, as well as key organisational leadership and strategic decision processes. • Risk Management: Fundamentals, Theory, and

Springer Verlag, Singapore Risk Management: Fundamentals, Theory, and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book outlines risk management theory systematically and comprehensively while distinguishing it from academic fields such as insurance theory. In addition, the book builds a risk financing theory that is independent of insurance theory.Until now, risk management (RM) theory has been discussed while the framework of the theory has remained unclear. However, this book, unlike previous books of this type, provides risk management theory after presenting a framework for it. Enterprise risk management (ERM) is seen differently depending on one’s position. For accountants, it is a means for internal control to prevent accounting fraud, whereas for financial institutions, it quantifies the risk that administrators can take to meet supervisory standards. Therefore, most of the ERM outlines are written to suit the intended uses or topics, with no systematic RM overviews. This book discusses a systematic RM theory linked to the framework of it, unlike previous books that were written according to topic. After the Enron scandal in December 2001 and WorldCom accounting fraud in June 2002, several laws were enacted or revised throughout the world, such as the SOX Act(Sarbanes-Oxley Act) in the United States and the Financial Instruments and Exchange Law and Companies Act in Japan. In this process, the COSO(Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of Treadway Commission) published their ERM framework, while the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) published their RM framework. The author believes that the competition between these frameworks was an opportunity to systematize RM theory and greatly develop it as an independent discipline from insurance. On the other hand, the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011, caused enormous losses. Also, because pandemics and cyber risks are increasing, businesses must have a comprehensive and systematic ERM for these risks associated with their business activitiesTable of ContentsTable of contents 2 List of Figures and Tables Foreword 14 Part 1 - General Theory of Risk Management 16 Chapter 1 The concept of risk and corporate risk 17 1. Book SynopsisThe COVID-19 pandemic has changed the face of international and domestic tourism and sharply focused attention on the importance of tourist health, safety and wellbeing like never before. This book offers a unique perspective on the challenges facing the world’s largest service industry to protect and care for customers in a rapidly evolving environment where borders have closed, social distancing rules apply and personal hygiene has become a key focus in everyday life. Yet tourism is a very resilient industry and history shows there is always an immediate surge toward recovery after a crisis has passed. Humans want to travel and see the world. While we appreciate that the pandemic is far from over, already there are reports of pent-up demand for travel as restrictions ease at some destinations and borders begin to open. As we move hopefully toward the recovery phase and people begin to move around for business and pleasure, this book presents the reader with key information and insights in both traditional and emerging areas of tourist health, safety and wellbeing, recognising that the world is now shaped by this pandemic, bringing change, potentially enduring benefits and lasting legacies.Table of ContentsForeword.- Preface.- Acknowledgements.- Chapter 1. • Gaming as a Cultural Commons: Risks, Challenges,

Springer Verlag, Singapore Gaming as a Cultural Commons: Risks, Challenges,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book focuses on relatively neglected areas of simulation and gaming (S&G), i.e., cultural aspects and ethical issues, in addition to giving readers a basic knowledge of S&G. Although the educational effects of S&G, and related methods such as gamification, as well as serious games have been studied and are gaining recognition, their downsides are often overlooked. For example, there is always a risk of manipulation by games if maliciously designed and facilitated. Ethical codes of game designers, facilitators, and educators must be established on the basis of academic research. Considerations of the ethics of games are essential not only for S&G researchers and educators but also for the general public, because games have sometimes been used for propaganda purposes in the past and could be again, in the present and future. Looking at the cultural aspect, as the S&G community has accumulated research over 50 years, the book includes the knowledge of the pioneers, i.e., archival interview data. This is the first book that includes extensive interviews of researchers and commercial game designers and critics. It also contains diverse topics from the perspective of gender and Japanese culture. Japan has been attracting attention in the field of board games as there are many independent game designers and an expanding market. Although women in S&G have gained some recognition, the topic has been rather ignored and was first officially discussed in 2019 at the international conference of the International Simulation and Gaming Association held in Warsaw. In summary, by focusing on comparatively overlooked or neglected aspects of S&G, this book expands future opportunities in the field for researchers and educators, with increased awareness by the general public.Table of ContentsPreface- Part 1 Culture in Gaming and Simulation.- Chapter 1: Gaming Simulation – Terminology and Fundamentals.- Chapter 2: Knowledge from the Great Ancestors: The “Cone of Ab-straction” – Revisiting a Key Concept through Interviews with Gaming Simulation Veterans.- Chapter 3.- Board Game Immersion.- Chapter 4: Women (and a little bit of Culture) in Simulation Gaming.- Chapter 5: The Current Status of Japanese Game Players and its Impact on the Society.- Part 2 Education.- Chapter 6: Case Example: KIKATOPIA Game – A Simulation Game on Diversity and Living together with Children as Co-designers.- Chapter 7: Bringing Gaming into Education: Cultural Context and Ethical Issues in the Case of SN Games.- Chapter 8: Code of Conduct for Facilitators and the Ethics of De-briefing.- Chapter 9: Ethics and Simulation Games in a Cultural Context: Why Should we Bother?
