Book SynopsisDavid Howe tells the story of the Lake District, England's most dramatic landscape. Home to vistas of stunning beauty and a rich heritage, it is an area of England that fascinates, inspires - and has bewitched David for a lifetime. With passion and an endless curiosity, he reveals how half a billion years of shifting ice, violent volcanoes and (of course) falling rain have shaped the lakes and fells that have fired the imaginations of the great sons and daughters of the area, the poets and the scientists. He shows that Lakeland is a seamless web where lives and landscape weave together, where the ancient countryside has created a unique local history: of farming and mining, of tightknit communities, of a resilient and proud people. The Lake District is a place of rocks and rain, reason and romance, wonder and curiosity. And this book celebrates it all: the very character of Cumbria.Trade Review"Written in a tremendously readable narrative style (think `Mountains of the Mind' by Robert Macfarlane) ... skilful ... compelling." The Great Outdoors; "Chapters on mountains, ice and lakes, on farming and national parks and Wainwright ... set against Cumbria's wider cultural importance ... very accessible ... [yet] holds a considerable weight of authority." Country Life; "Interesting ... links the landscape with the scientists, the Romantic poets and other notable residents [of the Lake District] ... forensic details of the geology and geomorphology of the Lakes ... detailed biographies on the lives and loves of the Romantic poets." BBC Countryfile Magazine; "An ambitious and enjoyable biography of a landscape." Cumbria Life, Book of the Month; "Affectionately written ... a ramble through the Lake District ... elegiac ... a reflection on the transience of life and beauty." Birlinn General Orkney: A Historical Guide

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisOrkney lies only 20 miles north of mainland Scotland, yet for many centuries its culture was more Scandanavian than Scottish. Strong westerly winds account for the scarcity of trees on Orkney and also for the tradition of well-constructed stone structures. As a result, the islands boast a large number of exceptionally well-preserved remains, which help us to form a detailed picture of Orcadian life through the ages. Sites and remains to be explored include settlements from the Stone Age, stone circles and burials from the Bronze Age, Iron Age brochs, Viking castles, the magnificent cathedral of St Magnus in Kirkwall, Renaissance palaces, a Martello tower from the Napoleonic Wars and numerous remains from the Second World War. In this updated edition of her best-selling book, Caroline Wickham-Jones, who has worked extensively on Orcadian sites for many years, introduces the history of the islands and provides a detailed survey of the principal places and sites of historic interest.Trade Review'Wickham-Jones' clear writing, expertise and obvious enthusiasm for her subject make her brand-new 2015 Guide a must-read for anyone drawn to this approximately 70-island-strong historical treasure trove' - Joan Lennon, History Girls blog

  • Birmingham in 50 Buildings

Amberley Publishing Birmingham in 50 Buildings

    3 in stock

Although Birmingham’s history goes back beyond the Middle Ages, there are only a few fragments of medieval Birmingham left, some of which have been moved from their original site as the city expanded. The city expanded rapidly in the industrial age and although Birmingham has many properties from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was radically transformed by the bombing raids of the Second World War and the subsequent rejuvenation by city planners. Some 1960s and 1970s buildings like the Rotunda have become icons of the city, but in recent years much of the mid-twentieth-century building, often in concrete brutalist style, has in turn been replaced by new structures like Beetham Tower and Birmingham Library. As England’s second city, Birmingham was a major centre of manufacture, and many of the buildings still stand today. It was also the home of a significant art and architecture movement, the Arts and Crafts movement, which has left its mark on the architectural legacy of Birmingham. Birmingham in 50 Buildings explores the history of this fascinating West Midlands metropolis through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years. It uncovers the earliest churches and dwellings in the city, unique pieces of industrial architecture, the amazing heritage of Victorian religious and municipal structures, art deco cinemas, modernist high-rise blocks and iconic shopping centres. This book will appeal to all those who live in Birmingham or have an interest in the city.

  • The Lives They Saved

Rowman & Littlefield The Lives They Saved

    3 in stock

Book Synopsis The Lives They Saved is the story in artifacts and oral histories of the 300,000 New Yorkers who were evacuated from Manhattan on 9/11by boat. It is a story that has not yet been written about or told. It includes hundreds of oral histories and many photographs of this high drama, set against the terrifying backdrop of the day when the Earth stood still, every airport in the U.S. was closed down, and Manhattan was seized by gridlock. For perspective, the boatlift that saved Britain's expeditionary force from the beaches of Dunkirk removed approximately the same number of people: 300,000. Trade ReviewNetGalley Review: 5 starsLast updated on 13 Jul 2021"There are some books you finish and right away you write the review, with a book like this I think it takes serious processing time. What can I say? How do I feel or what do I even write? This story is absolutely gut wrenching and truthfully or shamefully one I wasn’t aware of. I always like to read about September 11 around this time of year and this book hit the mark for me. I knew about the boats the led massive people to safety but I really didn’t know about them and how many times have I ridden the Staten Island Ferry or the Seastreak? I think it’s so important to know as much as possible about September as to truly never forget! Again, I’d highly recommend this! I loved how it was written because it was easy to put down and then come back to it because with books like this sometimes you need that. So many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my gifted ebook copy." —Jamie Iannuzzelli, reviewer at 1982NetGalley Review: 5 starsLast updated on 03 Aug 2021"This is a story of heroes, An unseen look in word and photo of the day that shook this country and the world to its very core. Amidst the horrific events of the day and the gridlock in NYC, a magnificent effort was underway by the individuals that worked the waterways; the Staten Island Ferry, the Seastreak (as an example) to bring hundreds of thousands to safety. I was unaware of the enormity of this evacuation. I as you, have seen hundreds of photos and read many accounts of 9/11. In some photographs, the boats on waterway are the foreground to the backdrop of the burning towers. I haven’t thought of the work and unending diligence of those that were accountable for ferrying people out of the city. This is an emotional and heart wrenching account that needed to be told. As a portion of the book subtitle reads “The Untold Story of Medics, Mariners and the Incredible Boatlift” it is all that and so much more. This is a day that I will never forget and L. Douglas Keeney has given us an oral history that will add to the unconditional efforts of the human spirit."—Susan Derbacher, consumer reviewer

Book SynopsisMONA has done a lot more than just rescue a flagging tourism economy. It has changed the city’s body language, teaching it to stand up straight and look others squarely in the eye, even putting on a swagger in its step. From Hobart’s convict legacy, its spectacular natural setting, heritage architecture and climate, to crime rates, economic hardship and new developments, not to mention the game-changer that is MONA, Timms brings a wealth of fresh insights, exploring the city with a mixture of affection, admiration, frustration and sadness. He interviews a wide range of residents along the way – many of whom, given the weather, might be found in Gore-Tex and beanies. Those who have experienced Hobart as tourists will be surprised and intrigued by the complex society and history this book reveals. Those who live here will surely discover their city anew, propelled by the author’s fondness for it. Now with a new introduction where Tims reflects on what has been nothing short of a tourism-driven revolution since Hobart was first published in 2009. New edition of a classic with a new Introduction in which Timms reflects on how much – and how little – Hobart has changed since his book was first published in 2009, before MONA, before more people started moving there and before water restrictions in summer The writing is wonderfully evocative – literary non-fiction at its finest Foreword by Robert Dessaix Originally published as In Search of Hobart, this was the first book published in the City Series – the arrival of MONA means it has already been updated once Will be supported with marketing campaign and local events Trade Review... 2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe first book to look specifically at the movement of Cornish men and women to and from the Caribbean from the early days of colonialism. A fascinating subject for those with an interest in all things Cornish, be they in Cornwall, in the Caribbean, or in the wider Cornish diaspora. The Cornish in the Caribbean is the first study to tell the stories of some of the many Cornish men and women who went to the Caribbean. Some became wealthy plantation owners, while others came as indentured servants and labourers. Cornish men were active in the armed services, taking part in the numerous sea and land battles fought by the competing European powers throughout the region. Cornish officers and crew sailed on the ships of the Falmouth Packet Service which took the mail to and from the Caribbean. Methodism was strong in Cornwall and Methodist missionaries and their wives came to the Caribbean to evangelise both the enslaved and the newly free. The most striking transfer of Cornish skills to the Caribbean was to be found in mining. As Cornish mining declined, and the Great Emigration of miners and their families got underway, Cornish mining engineers, captains and miners went out to mines throughout the Caribbean. “Meticulously researched and highly readable” Bridget Brereton, Professor Emerita, University of the West Indies.
