  • Cannock Chase Past

The History Press Ltd Cannock Chase Past

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCannock Chase has had many changes in its boundaries over the years. This book deals mainly with the are which formed the ancient parish of Cannock; taking in Hednesford, Hatherton, Cannock Wood and Great Wyrley. Cheslyn Hay has been included, partly because its story is most closely linked with Great Wyrleym but also because it was always a sort of 'no-mans land,' coming under the jurisdiction of neither the lord of the manor nor the Church. It was regarded as a wild and lawless place! The Chase has a long and interesting history. Many are familiar with the popular local tales such as the deeds of 'The Wyrley Gang,' but there is much more to be told about the Chase in the past that is less well known. Why, for example, is there evidence of a major flint-working site near Castle Ring, when local flint deposits are few and far between? Who built the hill-fort at Castle Ring and why? Where are the remains of the first known bathroom, complete with hot and cold running water? What did the Norman forest laws mean to ordinary people? Why was the first blast furnace in the Midlands built near Hednesford? What had Cannock Chase miners to do with the first landmine ever detonated? Why should Cannock curate have his sermons burnt by the public hangman? Why, if some Victorian civil servant had made a different decision, might Hednesford Town F.C. have been Arsenal F.C. instead? Finally... How, when and why did the Chase emerge from its centuries-long isolation to become a major coalfield and industrial centre by the end of the 19th century? In this very lively and entertaining account of the history of the area, the author examines all these questions and many more. Well-researched and particularly well-illustrated, her book will appear to everyone with an interest in the past of the Chase as well as to those, from many miles away, recognise its significance in providing the first full history of an important, if previously neglected, part of old England!

Two Rivers Press Coley Talking: Realities of life in old Reading

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisNineteenth and early twentieth century Reading prospered from the canal, the railway, brewing and biscuit making, but massive population growth in the middle years of the nineteenth century brought with it many problems. Coley Talking lifts the lid on a dark aspect of Reading’s, and England’s, history. Memories, photographs, maps and archives, tell the story of how life was lived in one of its poorest communities. All the symptoms of extreme poverty – workhouses, chronic disease, insanitary back-to-back housing – are revealed in shocking, ‘this is what life was like’ detail. But change was on the way: ragged schools, sanitation, the work of socialist councillors Harry and Lorenzo Quelch, and the early days of the local Labour party, together with a strong and resilient community spirit all played their parts. Through the microcosm of Coley we are shown the transformations brought about by slum clearance, the NHS, state education and the work of trade unions, and can appreciate the initiatives which make life better today.

  • Leeds: Changing Places

Great Northern Books Ltd Leeds: Changing Places

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisModern Leeds is a vibrant, bustling city. A shopper's paradise, its broad streets and modern shopping centres offer the latest tastes and favourite brands. It is also a major UK hub of finance and commerce. In many ways, it has always been so. Leeds has a knack for being a savvy city, keeping apace with trends, constantly modifying to accommodate new lifestyle habits, in a bid to make the place a desirable area to shop, work and do business. Moving with the times has meant the appearance of the city is constantly evolving. Leeds: Changing Places is a fascinating, photographic insight which charts these changes over the last 100 years, by comparing the past with the present. In the old photographs, Leeds is awash with bold Victorian buildings reflecting Baroque, Gothic and Classical influences. Electric trams weaved their way along the main thoroughfares. Traders, full of character, proudly displayed their varied, and often niche goods, for all to see. Today's blend of Victorian architecture,1920s and 1930s Art Deco, alongside contemporary Brutalist structures, create a diverse streetscape, brought to life by Peter Tuffrey in this intriguing book for a wide audience to enjoy.

  • A. Cook's Perspective: A Fascinating Insight into

Casemate Publishers A. Cook's Perspective: A Fascinating Insight into

Book SynopsisAnn Cook was an 18th-century cook and cookbook author. Her cookbook was printed in three editions and contained more than just receipts. For some reason, she had a real problem with Hannah Glasse’s cookbook, The Art of Cookery: Made Plain and Easy, which had been republished many times during the 18th century and would have been the first port of call for a puzzled cook or housekeeper. Cook’s book included vitriolic comments about a number of Glasse’s recipes.Historic cooks Clarissa F. Dillon and Deborah J. Peterson use their skills to investigate whether Cook’s remarks were valid. They prepared a number of recipes, both from Glasse and from Cook, and commented on the results. Although a number of people have written about these two women, their emphasis was on the comments, not on the validity of the criticisms. This approach makes this book unique.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction Ann Cook’s First Edition of Professed Cookery Glossary

  • Scratching Shed Publishing Ltd The Home of Footballers: A History of Runcorn

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisRuncorn was a hotbed of rugby in the late Victorian era, the town’s club a proud founder member in 1895 of the Northern Union – the breakaway game that became known as Rugby League. Yet that great rugby tradition was ended by the First World War, with devastating effects for many Runcornians, including members of the rugby club, who served and lost their lives. Runcorn nurtured ten international rugby players in total, all but one born within a few hundred yards of the Irwell Lane ground. Respected sports writer and historian Michael Latham recreates those far-off days when the oval ball dominated and the town’s heroes included Harry Speakman, a member of the first rugby tourists to Australia, Sam Houghton, Jimmy Butterworth, Jimmy Jolley and Dick Padbury, among just a few in a gallery of colourful characters, the rugby league superstars of their day. With a detailed biographical and records section to complement the deeply researched narrative, this is one of the most comprehensive histories ever written about the Northern Union and contains around three hundred photographs. Harry Price was once a promising Runcorn player, snapped up by Wigan in 1906, where he became a highly regarded and popular player and captain. The report announcing his signing in the Wigan newspaper had a simple, approving testimonial: “Price was born in Runcorn, the home of footballers.” Hence the book’s title.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA history of a city-state can cover its political leaders or military past. Historian Eisen Teo is fascinated by something else: its land transport networks, and urban and traffic patterns. He dubs it the History of Movement: an intimate history driven by human nature, the age-old need to move from Point A to Point B for the everyday conduct of life. As the world urbanizes, the history of movement will only grow in relevance. Jalan Singapura sheds new light on Singapore history through 700 years of movement. From horse carriages to subway trains, dirt tracks to million-dollar expressways, ancient attap villages to glass-and-steel waterfronts, the movement of a people has shaped Singapore’s present – and illuminates its future. This book gives readers a new perspective on Singapore history through topics very close to the hearts and experiences of everyone living in the country, namely land transport, urban living and traffic. It will also draw lessons from history to provide bold solutions for present-day urban and land transport problems in Singapore.

He wears the uniform of the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Foot and is one of the last British troops to be killed by direct contact with troops of Napoleonic France. In the absence of a written tradition, for generations of Skianachs, these tales, handed down orally, contained the very warp and weft of Hebridean history. They take us far beyond Christian times, to the edge of the Iron Age, and interweave with threads from the wider Atlantic tradition of Gaelic heroic myth and legend.

De Wolk not only introduces a much more believable Stanford, warts and all, but also does a great job of showing how his legacy and reputation was managed, massaged and sanitized after his death." * True West *"American Disruptor provides a dense but swift-moving primer on Stanford’s rise from tavern owner’s son to tycoon." * Stanford Magazine *"The original tech bro? Leland Stanford, co-founder of Stanford University, emerges as a spiritual forefather of Silicon Valley-style monopolism, exploitation and conflicts of interest in this dramatic new biography by Bay Area journalism professor Roland De Wolk." * KQED Arts *"A superb new account of Stanford’s 'preposterous career and life.'" * Berkeleyside *"Stanford was an uneducated anti-intellectual, yet defined himself as “a technologist” and wanted Stanford University to thrive as a trade school. He played a major role in vaulting America into peak ascendancy, yet had few qualms bilking taxpayers out of millions of dollars in the process (before going on to be a U.S. Senator). And those are just a few of the threads that De Wolk pulls to weave an engaging and highly relevant portrait of a profoundly influential, turbulent and, yes—“scandalous” life." * Six Fifty *"Stanford’s warts have long been on display, and De Wolk doesn’t avoid them, but the details the author has unearthed reveal a far more complex figure, one who clearly loved his wife and son. The author sums him up as an ordinary man who found himself in extraordinary circumstances and contends that history 'shows that the business Stanford pioneered was the foundation not only for Silicon Valley but also for the modern corporation itself.'" * HistoryNet *"Vivid prose and a strong narrative drive." * Journal of Interdisciplinary History *"American Disruptor penetrates the thicket of hagiography surrounding Leland Stanford." * New York Review of Books *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Prologue: Fell Redemption 1. Book Synopsis2023 Lawrence W. Levine Award Winner, Organization of American Historians Between the 1980s and the first decade of the twenty-first century, Asian Americans in Los Angeles moved toward becoming a racial majority in the communities of the East San Gabriel Valley. By the late 1990s, their model minority status resulted in greater influence in local culture, neighborhood politics, and policies regarding the use of suburban space. In the country living subdivisions, which featured symbols of Western agrarianism including horse trails, ranch fencing, and Spanish colonial architecture, white homeowners encouraged assimilation and enacted policies suppressing unwanted changesthat is, increased density and influence of Asian culture. While some Asian suburbanites challenged whites' concerns, many others did not. Rather, white critics found support from affluent Asian homeowners who also wished to protect their class privilege and suburbia's conservative Anglocentric milieu. In Resisting Change in Suburbia, award-winning historian James Zarsadiaz explains how myths of suburbia, the American West, and the American Dream informed regional planning, suburban design, and ideas about race and belonging.Table of ContentsContents List of Illustrations Acknowledgments Introduction 1 • Constructing “Country Living” 2 • The People of “Country Living” 3 • Asian Families Making a Home in the Suburbs 4 • Asian Suburbanites in the “In-Between” 5 • Growth and the Imminent Death of “Country Living” 6 • To Remain Country, Become a City Epilogue Notes Bibliography Index

  • We the Miners

Harvard University Press We the Miners

Book SynopsisThe California Gold Rush is thought to exemplify the Wild West, yet miners were expert organizers. Driven by property interests, they enacted mining codes, held criminal trials, and decided claim disputes. But democracy and law did not extend to foreigners and Indians, and miners were hesitant to yield power to the state that formed around them.Trade ReviewAndrea McDowell’s engaging study of the ensuing Gold Rush challenges Wild West stereotypes and explains how the miners who poured into California built workable forms of self-government. * Financial Times *An important law and economics study of an ‘anarchistic’ episode, going much deeper than some earlier accounts on matters involving Native Americans, fairness of trials, dispute resolution, miner-mining company interactions, and more. -- Tyler Cowen * Marginal Revolution *[This] book does admirable work unearthing overlooked dimensions of U.S. democracy and frontier law, while enriching our understanding of a storied chapter of American history. -- John Suval * Civil War Book Review *The California mining camps are legendary experiments in self-government. McDowell mines thousands of primary narratives to separate fact from fable and extracts a precise and elegant account of how the miners made laws and enforced them by means of meetings conducted by parliamentary procedure. We the Miners is expert and authoritative on details of miners’ property law and criminal law and of mining technology, and unsparingly detailed about their cruelty to outsiders like Mexicans and Native Americans. It is not likely that there will ever be a better history of the law of the Gold Rush than this one. -- Robert W. Gordon, Emeritus, Stanford Law SchoolRooted in the bold and intriguing idea that the organizational skills of California mining camps transcended the originality of their legal ideas, We the Miners is a provocative, well-argued book. McDowell goes beyond the old question of the nature of mining codes to the processes of meeting and decisionmaking in mining camps, especially in the miners’ use of American ‘parliamentary procedure as a form of governance.’ This wide-ranging, carefully researched work also explores the impact of mining codes on Native Americans and Spanish-speaking miners. Gracefully written with passion as well as fairness, it will appeal to a broad audience. -- Donald J. Pisani, author of Water, Land, and Law in the West: The Limits of Public Policy, 1850–1920
