Book SynopsisThis collection of over 200 old photographs provides a fascinating insight into the places and the people that have made Bo'ness such a unique town in Scotland. Famed from its days as Scotland's second largest seaport, the book examines and delves into not only its seafaring past, but other industries such as coal mining, oil and salt production which thrived on the south shore of the River Forth. To many people, however, Bo'ness will always be Scotland's Fair Town' and great detail and attention has been paid by the author to the event which has transformed a mere march into Great Britain's largest and most successful children's festival. Other aspects of the town's varied history examined include the connection with James Watt, the inventor of the steam engine, the founding of Britain's first local version of the welfare state in Bo'ness, and on a anecdotal note, stories of witches and ghosts, including what is reputedly Scotland's most haunted home. This book illustrates beautifully

The History Press Ltd The Big Ditch Manchesters Ship Canal

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNowadays most of us think of the Manchester Ship Canal as that bit of water under the Thelwell Viaduct as we sit in one of England''s traffic jam black spots but in the days before the M6, the Manchester Ship Canal was an important route from the docks at Salford and industrial Manchester to the world. From banana boats to cattle carriers, from tramp steamers to pleasure steamers, all sorts of ships used this busy thoroughfare. It wasn''t always like this - at one time the docks at Birkenhead and Liverpool received the goods that Manchester needed and everything travelled by railway, canal or road to the North''s industrial metropolis. In the 1880s, construction on Britain''s largest man-made inland waterway and soon sizable ships sailed to Salford. A stunning engineering project in its own right, the ''Big Ditch'' also spawned smaller marvels such as the Barton Aqueduct and it remained busy for almost a century. Now little used, it still remains a marvel of Victorian engineering.

  • The History Press Ltd Roman York

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe great historic city of York owes its origins to the Roman army which built a fortress here on the banks of the River Ouse in AD 71. By the early third century York had also became the site of a major urban center and the capital of the northern half of Britain when what had been a single Roman province was divided into two. York's importance is reflected in the fact that two Roman emperors died in the city: Septimius Severus in the year 211, and Constantius I in 306, his son Constantine was then acclaimed emperor here by his father's troops. Roman York tells the story of the fortress and town from their foundation until the early fifth century when Britain ceased to be part of the Roman Empire. Particular emphasis is placed on the results of recent excavations and research which have added great deal to our knowledge and understanding of the people who lived in a place the Romans knew as Eboracum.

The town played a significant role in the Civil War, and over the years has been an important industrial centre and a place known for its highly skilled watchmakers and clockmakers.Despite a history which dates back to pre-Roman times, very little evidence of the early town survived the wholesale reconstruction and expansion which came with the Industrial Revolution and turned Wigan into the centre of both the Lancashire coalfield and the Lancashire cotton industry. Today, the town is a lively mixture of old and new, with Wigan Pier becoming one of the country''s most successful tourist attractions, as well as one of the most inspired examples of industrial restoration. The book includes two walking tours of the town which can be used independently of the main text and enable readers to explore the history of Wigan through the streets, buildings and

Book SynopsisEveryone loves a good ghost story and the city of Sheffield seems to have plenty of them. The tales contained in this book are told by the Steel City Tours ghost walkers themselves, Mr and Mrs P. Dreadful, collected over the years and now brought together here for all to read. There are tales of haunted pubs like the Brown Bear pub in Norfolk Street, where a ghostly coachman is a regular visitor, the Graduate in Surrey Street where, much to the distress of the staff, a lady in black walks through the kitchen and exits through the wall and the Museum pub in Orchard Square where a ghost knocks over the beer glasses! The Lyceum, like theatres everywhere, has also attracted spooky visitors and claims three ghosts, including the enigmatic ''Ben'' who usually asks passers-by for an update on ''the news'' and smells of horses. Out of stock

Book SynopsisOver 250 old photographs, many published for the first time, appear in this new collection covering the districts of Roath, Splott and Adamsdown. This area, along with Penylan, Tremorfa and part of Cathays, once had a collective unity as the ecclesiastical parish of Roath created in the late sixteenth century. Roath as an historical entity is much older, however. Reputed to be pre-Norman in origin, in its time it has served as a manor, parish and village as well as a latter-day Cardiff suburb. Although earlier centuries are not neglected, particular focus is given to the period 1890 to 1950, which saw the emergence and maturity of these communities so familiar to present-day Cardiffians. Scenes of streetlife, work, worship and leisure are captured in a wide variety of often striking and atmospheric images. These are amplified by the fascinating historical detail in the captions providing the reader with a vivid appreciation of the richly significant past of this part of Cardiff.
