Cambridge University Press The Evolution of Arthurian Romance The Verse Tradition from Chrtien to Froissart The Verse Tradition from Chrtien to Froissart 35 Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature Series Number 35
Book SynopsisThis 1998 study serves as a contribution to both reception history, examining the medieval response to ChrÃtien's poetry, and genre history, suveying the evolution of Arthurian verse romance in French. It describes the evolutionary changes taking place between ChrÃtien's Eric et Enide and Froissart's Meliador, the first and last examples of the genre, and is unique in placing ChrÃtien's work, not as the unequalled masterpieces of the whole of Arthurian literature, but as the starting point for the history of the genre, which can subsequently be traced over a period of two centuries in the French-speaking world. Beate Schmolke-Hasselmann's study was first published in German in 1985, but her radical argument that we need urgently to redraw the lines on the literary and linguistic map of medieval Britain and France is only now being made available in English.Trade Review"In English the book reads with remarkable freshness. Scholarship on the verse romances has continued in recent years, but has concentrated on the production of (very welcome) new editions and articles on fashionable aspects of individual texts; Schmolke-Hasselmann's breadth of approach remains unparalleled. Like all the best criticism, Schmolke-Hasselmann's book raises as many stimulating questions as it answers." Rosemary Morris, AlbionTable of ContentsAcknowledgements; Introduction; Part I. The Response to Chrétien: Tradition and Innovation in Arthurian Romance: 1. The stigma of decadence; 2. Consolidation of the form; 3. Changes in the relationship between ideals and reality; 4. Knight or lover: Gawain as a paragon divided; 5. Old matiere, new sens: innovation in thought and content; 6. Aspects of the response to Chrétien: from plagiarism to nostalgia; Part II. An Historical Survey of the Impact of the Arthurian Verse Romances: 7. The popularity of Arthurian verse romances; 8. The audience; 9. Arthurian literature in French and its significance for England; Bibliography; Index.

Cambridge University Press The Regenerate Lyric
Book SynopsisElisa New presents a major revision of the accepted account of Emerson as the source of the American poetic tradition. New challenges the view that Emerson not only overthrew New England religious orthodoxy but founded a poetic tradition that fundamentally renounced that orthodoxy in favour of a secular, Romantic approach.Trade Review"...[a] superb first book...New's readings are rigorous and rewarding." Lee Oser, The New England Quarterly"The Regenerate Lyric makes the strongest case for the Puritan view since Pearce." Modern Philology"The Regenerate Lyric is an exciting debut. Well-read, and closely argued, it will be of interest for poets, critics, theologians, and historians alike." Matthew Cooperman, American Studies InternationalTable of ContentsIntroduction; Part I: 1. An original relation: Taylor and Emerson; 2. Poetics and the poem: Emerson; 3. The savage source: Emerson and Stevens; Part II: 4. Crossing Leviticus: Whitman; 5. Beyond circumference: Dickinson; 6. Hand of fire: Crane; Epilogue. The regenerate lyric: Lowell and Frost.

Cambridge University Press Hesiods Cosmos
Book SynopsisIn the Theogony and the Works and Days Hesiod provides the earliest systematic and comprehensive account of the genesis of the Greek gods and the nature of human life. Hesiod's Cosmos argues for reading the two poems as complementary halves of a whole embracing the divine and human cosmos.Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: 'The writing is in general very accessible … and the argument … is always set out clearly.' JACTReview of the hardback: '… scholarly, lucid, serious.' The Times Literary SupplementReview of the hardback: '… this remains a thoughtful book which repays careful study and will become a cornerstone of future Hesiodic scholarship.' Bryn Mawr Classical Review'Clay's book is accessible and unpretentious, thoughtfully structured and full of insight. It will convince you that there is much to admire in Hesiod's works, and perhaps much to complement our student's study of Homer.' The London Association of Classical Teachers NewsletterReview of the hardback: 'This is a thought-provoking book, which deserves to be widely read.' Journal of Hellenic StudiesReview of the hardback: 'Jenny Strauss Clay's excellent new book on Hesiod has the strength characteristic of all her work: she takes her text seriously … richly rewarding and filled with intriguing and thought-provoking insights. Clay has provided us with an important new perspective on the Hesiodic corpus.' HermathenaReview of the hardback: '… this book constitutes an estimable and valuable contribution to scholarly debate on Hesiod, which leads me to strongly recommend it. It is informative, accurate, challenging and, so to speak, a 'fertilizer' both for new reflections on the several topics discussed and for promoting increased interest in trying to better understand a poet traditionally neglected and obscured by comparison with Homer. And both these results are, in my opinion, the most precious values an essay can have.' Rosanna Lauriola, University of Texas, San AntonioTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. Orientations: the Theogony; 2. Orientations: the Works and Days; 3. Overtures; 4. The origins of mankind; 5. The two Prometheuses; 6. Perspectives on gods and men; 7. Hybrids; Conclusion.
