V&R unipress GmbH Zur Literarischen Darstellung von Adoleszenz in
Book SynopsisText in German. In this work, a transdisciplinary approach is used to find out the ways in which literary texts of contemporary literature represent experiences of adolescence in the GDR and the extent to which they contribute to the expansion of collective memory. The selected texts take into consideration specific forms of female and male adolescence, record different subcultural tendencies as well as specific rituals of youth cultural life in the 1970s and 1980s, therefore fulfilling an archival function that is important for the maintenance of cultural memory. In an excursus, selected patterns of adolescence that become the subject of representation in texts produced in the GDR in the 1970s are discussed.

V&R unipress GmbH Frauen erzahlen Geschichte: Historische Romane osterreichischer Autorinnen von der Ersten zur Zweiten Republik
Book SynopsisResearch has shown that the historical novels after 1918 are more concerned with the present than with the past. They reflect the political and social upheavals as well as the contemporaneous changes in the First Republic of Austria. This volume presents historical novels by Austrian women authors who have so far either received marginal treatment or been overlooked altogether, but whose literary work was met with great resonance in their time. Apart from literary works, biographical portraits of the generation of female authors who flourished during the First and Second Republic are delineated, as well as through new analyses of works the history of Austrian literature. The discourse of femininity in the respective historical transformations also plays an important role in this presentation.

V&R unipress GmbH Thomas Mann in Munchen: Religion und Narration
Book SynopsisThe study examines the interplay of religion and narrative technique in Manns early and middle literary works. Following Friedrich Nietzsches God is dead, religion and narration form an increasingly dynamic connection in Thomas Manns thinking and writing. This connection, however, has hardly been accorded any attention at all up to this time. Yvonne Nilges finally analyses this very relation, also shedding new light on Thomas Manns religious education at the Katharineum in Lübeck (18891894). The book includes archival illustrations that have been unknown in scholarship so far.

Peeters Publishers New Trends in Modern Dutch Literature
Book SynopsisThis volume contains a selection of essays presented at the international conference of Cultural Crises in Art and Literature, held in Groningen in November 2002, in special sessions concerning modern Dutch literature. The recent decennia have shown a gradual transition in Netherlandic Studies towards new scopes: a contextual orientation of literature and the reception of 'Theory'. The contributions to this volume touch upon the theme of cultural crises from the perspective of these frameworks, approaching topics like the interrelation of literary representation and historical and medical discourse concerning the obsession by dirt, contamination, and dust; the impact of nationalism and humanism (in the political field) on literary education; the decline of modernism, resulting in the changing position of women authors, the rise of children's literature and the reassessment of 'low' genres like melodrama. A brief outline of the development of the study of modern Dutch literature opens this volume, the presentation of a general theoretical and methodological framework for conceptualizing the notion of cultural crisis concludes it.

Peeters Publishers Time and Temporality in Literary Modernism
Book SynopsisThis book contains a selection of the papers presented at a conference hosted by the MDRN research lab of the University of Leuven (www.mdrn.be) in 2013. It explores the breadth and depth of the issues of time and temporality in European modernist writing and classic avant-garde literature. High-modernist and avant-garde authors were not the first to investigate in detail the problems of time and temporality, but their reflection has proven essential to our contemporary views on the subject. To date, however, we still lack a systematic understanding of the different forms and functions of time and temporality in the writings of the period. This book wants to fill this gap, not by delivering clear-cut answers to complex questions, but by presenting the multi-layered and often contradictory perspective on time articulated in the modernist era.
