Dieser Band zeichnet an einem repräsentativen Text-Corpus zu diesem Heiligen exemplarisch nach, wie mittelalterliche Erzählungen Jahrhunderte lang tradiert und dabei verändert wurden nicht nur über räumliche, sondern auch über sprachliche, soziale und mediale Grenzen hinweg. Die Studie ist interdisziplinär angelegt und orientiert sich bei den Analysen an den aktuellen Diskursen zum Wiedererzählen sowie zur Retextualisierung innerhalb der Mediävistik, wobei ein erweiterter Textbegriff im Sinne der ''Material Philology'' zugrunde gelegt wird. Neben textinternen werden insbesondere auch textexterne Modifikationen wie die handschriftliche Mitüberlieferung eines Textes in den Fokus gerückt. Durch diesen Ansatz wird für die Brandanforschung Neuland beschritten und werden wertvolle Impulse für die Erzählforschung des Mittelalters geliefert. Tales about the sea voyages of the Irish abbot Brendan of Clonfert (6th century) were well known through the Middle Ages and spread almost over the whole of Western Europe in that period. This volume focusses on a representative text corpus of a particular saint to show in an exemplary way, how medieval tales were passed on and changed from century to century. Not only did they cross country borders, they traversed also linguistic, social and medial borders. Therefore, this investigation is interdisciplinary, and its analyses are based upon recent discourses concerning theories of retextualization and retelling, following a notion of text that stems from Material Philology. In addition to textinternal modifications the study aims specifically at textexternal modifications such as other texts in collected manuscripts. By doing so it enters new ground for Brendan research and it creates new impulses for medieval narrative research.

The categories of courtly culture intersect and thus generate a multitude of ambivalences that are constantly used for creative reinterpretations. Jöran Balks examines in his study these ambivalences and potentials for reinterpretation in three Arthurian novels from the heyday of courtly literature around 1200. Through a systematic intercategorial intersectionality analysis, he presents a complex web of intersections between identity categories by which courtly identity can be negotiated. This diversity also shows that the discussed literary works not only presuppose a high inherent complexity of the question of courtly identity, but also receive it vividly and productively.
