  • Cambridge University Press Plato and the Art of Philosophical Writing

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisPlato's dialogues are usually understood as simple examples of philosophy in action. In this book Professor Rowe treats them rather as literary-philosophical artefacts, shaped by Plato's desire to persuade his readers to exchange their view of life and the universe for a different view which, from their present perspective, they will barely begin to comprehend. What emerges is a radically new Plato: a Socratic throughout, who even in the late dialogues is still essentially the Plato (and the Socrates) of the Apology and the so-called 'Socratic' dialogues. This book aims to understand Plato both as a philosopher and as a writer, on the assumption that neither of these aspects of the dialogues can be understood without the other. The argument of the book is closely based in Plato's text, but should be accessible to any serious reader of Plato, whether professional philosopher, classicist, or student.Trade Review"Rowe...displays an impressive grasp of a wide rage of literature. ...His book offers a penetrating analysis... ." --BMCR"Plato and the Art of Philosophical Writing is an engaging and well-argued book that focuses on both Socratic epistemology and the nature of Platonic argument." --Ancient PhilosophyTable of ContentsPreliminaries: reading Plato; The dialogues; Introduction: The simile of the cave in the Republic; 1. • Cambridge University Press Samnium and the Samnites

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRome engulfed first her near neighbours, then Italy and finally much of the known world. Her expansion was so successful that the history and culture of her main rivals, the Samnites, is too often overlooked. The author describes Samnium and the language of the Samnites, then reconstructs their culture, religion, economy and governmental system. Professor Salmon discusses their policy in Italy and their relations with Rome. The subsequent description of the three Samnite Wars and the Pyrrhic War critically reinterprets the principally Roman evidence for the military history of Roman Italy. Professor Salmon presents evidence about Samnium in the political organisation and civilisation of Roman Italy, and includes an important discussion of the Social War from the Italian point of view rather than from the purely Roman viewpoint. Originally published in 1967, much of the evidence collected and interpreted by Professor Salmon in this study - involving art, archeaology, topography and liteTable of ContentsList of maps; List of plates; Preface; 1. • Cambridge University Press Homer on the Gods and Human Virtue

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book shows that Homer was not only a great poet but also a great thinker. Peter J. Ahrensdorf shows that Homer elevates human virtue over reverence for the gods, celebrates the wisdom of the poet over the heroism of the warrior, and teaches that the courageously questioning Achilles is superior to Hector and Odysseus.Trade Review'Turning to the epics of Homer as resources for reflection about the deepest sources of human virtue and happiness, Ahrensdorf's challenging and persuasive book, by inverting the familiar views of the central characters created by the poet, elucidates the relation between the singer of songs and the true meaning of excellence.' Arlene W. Saxonhouse, University of Michigan'This provocative study will arouse controversy as it attempts to revive the ancient view of Homer as a teacher of virtue and to demonstrate that Achilles, rather than the apparently more lovable Hector or more rational Odysseus, really is the best of the Achaeans.' Jenny Strauss Clay, University of Virginia'Peter J. Ahrensdorf's Homer on the Gods and Human Virtue is a profound and moving book. His argument will provoke healthy controversy. It will also demand respect for its meticulous attention to intellectual history and scholarly disputes, its fair-mindedness, and its gravitas. The book is gracefully written and intensely argued, exemplifying the courageous wisdom of the poet Homer and the warrior Achilles in reflecting on questions of justice, divine providence, human mortality and human happiness.' Susan Collins, University of Notre Dame, Indiana'… [Ahrensdorf] gives us striking insights into the epics, and highlights Homer's humanity …' Susan Kristol, The Weekly Standard'Ahrensdorf makes a strong - indeed, to my mind, irrefutable - argument that the apparently dutiful, home-loving Hector is in fact anything but that; in Ahrensdorf's treatment, Achilles rightly emerges as the more profoundly thoughtful and ultimately more compassionate man.' First Things'Ahrensdorf shows the complexity and seriousness of Homer's moral universe. Especially strong is his examination of the virtue of Achilles' rage, the rage that begins the Iliad.' The Washington Free Beacon'Under Ahrensdorf's hand, Achilles emerges as the only hero who truly rivals Homer himself in terms of the depth of his wisdom, and his liberation from convention inspires the later birth of philosophy in classical Greece.' Review of Politics'Homer on the Gods and Human Virtue takes the poet seriously and, by doing so, illustrates the powerful voice that Homer and - more generally - literature can and should have within political philosophy. Unlike so many volumes, Ahrensdorf's new book on Homer successfully navigates between the twin dangers that haunt such endeavors: he neither cherry picks the story selectively to support his argument, nor does he lose sight of his thesis (and hence the philosophy) in the labyrinth of the poetry. As a result, this contribution successfully marries literature and philosophy. Ahrensdorf's introduction is a beautiful and succinct defense of the place of Homer in the study of politics, and the body of the book … explores the relationship between men and gods and the resulting implications for human virtue.' Michelle M. Kundmueller, Polis: The Journal for Ancient Greek Political Thought'[Ahrensdorf]'s depiction of Homer as a philosophical poet of the first rank is compelling. This book is deserving of a close reading by scholars and students alike.' Robert J. Rabel, The Classical Review'To call Peter J. Ahrensdorf's book on Homer 'thought-provoking' would be an understatement, as the length and substance of this review might convince you. It is a book to be read and reread, enjoyed and argued with, a book that will, with its swift pace and disarming forthrightness, whisk you through it in a few sittings.' Robert Goldberg, Interpretation: A Journal of Political PhilosophyTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. The theology of Homer; 2. Achilles and Hector; 3. Achilles and the limits of virtue; 4. • Cambridge University Press The Jew in the Medieval Book English Antisemitisms 1350 1500 60 Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature Series Number 60

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis interdisciplinary study explores images of Jews and Judaism in late medieval English literature and culture. Using four main categories - history, miracle, cult and Passion - Anthony Bale demonstrates how varied and changing ideas of Judaism coexisted within well-known anti-semitic literary and visual models, depending on context, authorship and audience. He examines the ways in which English writers, artists and readers used and abused the Jewish image in the period following the Jews' expulsion from England in 1290. The texts are analysed in their manuscript and print contexts in order to show local responses and changing meanings. This important work opens up fresh texts, sources and approaches for understanding medieval anti-semitism and shows how anti-semitic stereotypes came to be such potent images which would endure far beyond the Middle Ages.Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: '… a tremendous book … meticulously researched and lucidly composed …' Studies in the Age of ChaucerReview of the hardback: '… outstanding … nuanced and historically grounded … [offering] a contextualized and scholarly approach to the subject.' The Times Literary SupplementReview of the hardback: '… an important contribution …' Journal of Interdisciplinary HistoryReview of the hardback: '… wide-ranging … subtle … valuable.' The Year's Work in English StudiesReview of the hardback: 'Bale ably combines capacious palaeographical study, insightful multidisciplinary readings, and fully documented and beautifully written prose. … This book is an important critical resource and will find a place on bookshelves now and for years to come. Even more, Bale's The Jew in the Medieval Book is a pleasure to read.' Medium AevumReview of the hardback: 'The Jew in the Medieval Book is an outstanding contribution … Bale is fluent in the latest theoretical innovations and very much engaged with confronting the ugly role that antisemitism continues to play on the world stage. What is so impressive about this volume is the way that Bale manages to weave this theoretical sophistication together with his smart and learned understandings of these medieval objects … This volume is essential reading for anyone interested in medieval representations of Jews, but its deep engagement with history and with manuscript culture should make this book important to many other scholars as well … I strongly recommend it to anyone with interests in medieval spirituality, manuscript studies, and questions of gender and sexuality.' SpeculumReview of the hardback: 'Bale's research, detailing the representation of the Jew in the words and images of medieval manuscripts, simultaneously marks a particularly necessary intervention into, and departure from the established conversation about the Jew in medieval England. … This book is an important critical resource and will find a place on bookshelves now and for years to come. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThrough examining some of the everyday items that helped establish a person's masculinity or femininity, this book offers a new analysis of gender identity in early modern English literature and culture. Individual chapters focus on items such as codpieces, handkerchiefs, beards, and hair. Fisher argues that these seemingly peripheral parts were in fact constitutive, and consequently that early modern gender was materialized through a relatively wide range of parts or features, and that it was also often conceptualized as being malleable. The book deliberately brings together sexual characteristics (beard growth and hair length) and gendered accessories (codpieces and handkerchiefs) in order to explore the limitations of using the modern conceptual distinction between sex and gender to understand early modern ideas about masculinity and femininity. Materializing Gender engages with a range of historical materials including drama, poetry, portraiture, medical texts, and polemical tractsTable of ContentsIntroduction: Prosthetic gender in early modern England; 1. That Shakespearean rag: handkerchiefs and femininity; 2. 'That codpiece ago': codpieces and masculinity in early modern England; 3. 'His Majesty the beard': beards and masculinity; 4. 'The ornament of their sex': hair and gender; Conclusion: detachable parts and the individual.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book re-examines the most traditional area of classical scholarship, offering critical assessments of the current state of the field, its methods and controversies, and its prospects for the future in a digital environment. Each stage of the editorial process is examined, from gathering and evaluating manuscript evidence to constructing the text and critical apparatus, with particular attention given to areas of dispute, such as the role of conjecture. The importance of subjective factors at every point is highlighted. An Appendix offers practical guidance in reading a critical apparatus. The discussion is framed in a way that is accessible to non-specialists, with all Latin texts translated. The book will be useful both to classicists who are not textual critics and to non-classicists interested in issues of editing.Trade Review'… this is an excellent book both in itself and because it puts so many things into question.
