    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book illustrates the use of ethnography as an analytical approach to investigate academic writing, and provides critical insights into how academic writing research can benefit from the use of ethnographic methods. Throughout its six theoretical and practice-oriented studies, together with the introductory chapter, foreword and afterword, ethnography-related concepts like thick description, deep theorizing, participatory research, research reflexivity or ethics are discussed against the affordances of ethnography for the study of academic writing. The book is key reading for scholars, researchers and instructors in the areas of applied linguistics, academic writing, academic literacies and genre studies. It will also be useful to those lecturers and postgraduate students working in English for Academic Purposes and disciplinary writing. The volume provides ethnographically-oriented researchers with clear pointers about how to incorporate the telling of the inside story into their traditional main role as observers.Winner of the 9th edition of the AELFE's Enrique Alcaraz Research Award

  • Literacy and Written Culture in Early Modern

Central European University Press Literacy and Written Culture in Early Modern

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe key aspect of this volume is to place Hungary on the map of European literacy rates over the whole period between the initial stimuli of Renaissance and Reformation and the developed, state-organized educational systems of the later 19th century. Toth's work is a broad international comparative analysis, concentrating on the long-term development of literacy rates and the use of written and oral culture in early modern societies. An examination is provided of elementarey schools and their teachers, as well as book reading among peasants and noblemen throughout the 16th to 19th centuries in Hungary. Significant sections are included on the development of libraries during the period and on the use of different languages, particularly Latin. By way of illustration examples are taken of village life, legal and administrative issues and the clergy to contribute to major debates in the field of language, literacy, linguistics and social history.Trade Review"This book is a model study of scrupulous rigor in its numerically minded social analysis, of challenging methodological innovation in its approach to the problem, and of marvelous insight into the social and cultural meaning of early modern literacy and illiteracy." * American Historical Review *"István Tóth is fully versed in the literature and provides a model of sensitive analysis and interpretation of the place of the written word in central European culture, from the peasantry on up tthrough the landed gentry and various levels of nobility... the depth of research, the felicity of the prose, the picaresque anecdotes, and the many insights into the nature of early-modern central European cultural and intellectual life should be enough to interest most scholars of the place and period in this book." * Journal of Modern History *"This book's great strength lies in careful analysis of rich archival evidence, impressively documented in footnotes..." * Libraries & Culture *"The author successfully combines quantitative research together with qualitative study of the place of reading among different social groups and by doing so, provides extremely valuable insights into religious life in different social groups.... The book is well translated and it has an index. The quantitative data does not disturb the flow of the description, and the colorful descriptions the author cited make this a very enjoyable read." * Religious Studies Review *"...offers a fascinating view of trends in literacy in Hungary in, basically, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but with some earlier material on the aristocracy and some later information on the peasants." * Slavic Review *"The present work was first published in Hungarian in 1996 ... It is now published by CEU Press in not only flawless English but also under a quite different and rather more earnest title... may serve as an excellent introduction not only to the study of Hungarian literacy but also to the social history of the early modern period." * Slavonic and East European Review *"...a very well documented work, with abundant maps, tables." * Ungarn - Jahrbuch, Zeitschrift für interdisziplinäre Hungarologie *Table of ContentsPart 1 Door to the world of writing; the social history of elementary schools. Part 2 The written word is gaining ground slowly in the peasant culture. Part 3 Writing and reading capacities of the nobility. Part 4 The lower layer of nobility; the petty nobleman living in an oral world. Part 5 The culture of well-to-do noblemen; libraries and their proprietors. Part 6 Outlook in space and time Conclusion

Book SynopsisThis book invites readers to challenge, corroborate, and add to the discourse on more inclusive pedagogical practice. Presenting theoretically and empirically informed research, it highlights potential considerations regarding the intersections of diversity, literacy, and learner difficulties. These three areas provide a stage where opposing paradigms often pose challenges for educators and create unnecessary barriers to providing the best education for all learners. These barriers might reveal how students are positioned through a deficit lens rather than one that recognizes individual differences and how these learner differences sometimes result in labels or put students at increased risk of encountering difficulties. The contributing authors’ goals are to start and sustain a conversation that examines these perspectives and to offer counter-narratives to the deficit lens by recognizing that individual difference does not need to be a barrier to educational access. By examining opportunities for more inclusive educational success, this book encourages discourse among key stakeholders; further, it goes beyond problematizing to offer new avenues for optimal learning and inclusive pedagogy across multiple contexts.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisThe twenty-first century Reading War is, in fact, nothing new, but some of the details are unique to our current culture driven by social media. This volume seeks to examine the current Reading War in the context of the historical recurrence of public and political debates around student reading abilities and achievement.Grounded in a media fascination with the "science of reading" and fueled by a rise in advocates for students with dyslexia, the current Reading War has resulted in some deeply troubling reading policy, grade retention and intensive phonics programs. This primer for parents, policy makers, and people who care confronts some of the most compelling but misunderstood aspects of teaching reading in the U.S. while also offering a way toward ending the Reading War in order to serve all students, regardless of their needs. The revised/expanded 2nd edition adds developments around the "science of reading," including the expanding impact on state policy and legislation as well as robust additions to the research base around teaching students to read.

Information Age Publishing Toward Critical Multimodality: Theory, Research,

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis edited volume seeks to answer the question, "What does it mean to be a critical multimodal scholar in educational spaces?" Toward Critical Multimodality highlights how choices made throughout multimodal design and research processes are critically-oriented and inextricably linked to power. We show how social semiotics and multimodality inform engagement with criticality in educational spaces through questioning dominant narratives (e.g., white, cisheteropatriarchal, ableist, classist perspectives), exploring relationships between selves and space, problematizing and reimagining educational practices, and dreaming of educational futures that are just, anti-oppressive, and with room for all to thrive while learning. These chapters demonstrate how studying multiple modalities in interaction (e.g., image, writing, color, spatial layout, gaze, proxemics, gestures) can reveal how power operates, provide students with opportunities to explore themselves and their identities with respect to power, and provide a vehicle for scholars to disrupt and transform oppressive educational practices. Furthermore, multiple chapters show alternative ways to display, construct and share knowledge as transformative pedagogical practice in learning environments. We reframe social semiotics and multimodality as an integral part of decentering dominant ideas of power and what "counts" as purposeful meaning making by highlighting how criticality and multimodality integrate theoretically and methodologically.
