Bold Type Books The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History
Book SynopsisThis singular history of a prison, and the queer women and trans people held there, is a window into the policing of queerness and radical politics in the twentieth century. The Women’s House of Detention, a landmark that ushered in the modern era of women’s imprisonment, is now largely forgotten. But when it stood in New York City’s Greenwich Village, from 1929 to 1974, it was a nexus for the tens of thousands of women, transgender men, and gender-nonconforming people who inhabited its crowded cells. Some of these inmates—Angela Davis, Andrea Dworkin, Afeni Shakur—were famous, but the vast majority were incarcerated for the crimes of being poor and improperly feminine. Today, approximately 40 percent of the people in women’s prisons identify as queer; in earlier decades, that percentage was almost certainly higher. Historian Hugh Ryan explores the roots of this crisis and reconstructs the little-known lives of incarcerated New Yorkers, making a uniquely queer case for prison abolition—and demonstrating that by queering the Village, the House of D helped defined queerness for the rest of America. From the lesbian communities forged through the Women’s House of Detention to the turbulent prison riots that presaged Stonewall, this is the story of one building and much more: the people it caged, the neighborhood it changed, and the resistance it inspired. Catapult Hello Stranger
Book SynopsisWitty and winkingly playful, Manuel Betancourt’s Hello Stranger explores modern queer romance and the expansive possibilities of ephemeral intimacies“Hello stranger.” As an opening line, you really can’t ask for better.Hello Stranger is a book about chance encounters—at a bar, through social media, in a bathhouse—and what a stranger can reveal about who we are and who we could still yet be. A stranger, after all, is a site of endless possibilities. As Manuel Betancourt looks back on his past relationships, he turns to characters and narratives that helped him question notions of what monogamy and coupledom (and relationships and marriage) can and should look like. From films like Before Sunrise and Cruising to the poetry of Frank O'Hara and the musicals of Stephen Sondheim, Betancourt uses pop culture to make sense of the alluring prospect of forging intimacies with strangers—even, or especially, the strangers within ourselves. At once a personal excavation and a broad cultural critique, Betancourt grapples with everything from online sexting and real-life cruising to divorces and throuples. Hello Stranger examines the intimacies we crave, value, and oftentimes destroy with rote familiarity.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Way Out: A History of Homosexuality in Modern
Book SynopsisIn 1957, there were over a thousand men in prison for 'homosexual offences'. A little over half a century later, homosexuality is an active part of the mainstream. Homosexuality has a public profile - on TV, in film and in literature and popular culture. When did today's fairly open discourse on homosexuality begin? Sebastian Buckle argues that homosexuality as a public identity began after the Second World War, on the release of the Wolfenden Report which recommended gay sex be decriminalised, and tells the story of homosexuality in the public eye. Buckle takes us through early images of homosexuality in the 1950s, the founding of the Gay Liberation Front, Section 28 and community radicalism under Margaret Thatcher's government, the AIDs crisis of the 1980s, the expanding musical and cultural influence of gay subcultures and the resulting partial acceptance into the mainstream of queer identities. The result is a complex and nuanced history of gay movements, society and the media, and a fresh look at how the struggle for acceptance and equality has been fought.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements List of Acronyms Preface Introduction Section 1: Gay Liberation Section 2: A Visible Subculture Section 3: Joining the Mainstream Conclusion Notes Bibliography Index

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Sappho
Book SynopsisSappho has been constructed as many things: proto-feminist, lesbian icon and even - by the Victorians - chaste headmistress of a girls' finishing school. Yet ironically, as Page DuBois shows, the historical poet herself remains elusive. We know that Sappho's contemporary Alcaeus described her as 'violet, pure, honey-smiling Sappho'; and that the rhetorician and philosopher Maximus of Tyre saw her, perhaps less enthusiastically, as 'small and dark'. We also know that her 7th/6th century BCE island of Lesbos was riven by tyrannical and aristocratic factionalism and that she was probably exiled to Sicily. Much of the rest is speculative. DuBois suggests that the value of Sappho lies elsewhere: in her remarkable verse, and in the poet's reception - one of the richest of any figure from antiquity. Offering nuanced readings of the poems, written in an archaic Aeolic dialect, DuBois skillfully draws out their sharp images and rhythmic melody. She further discusses the exciting discovery of a new verse fragment in 2004, and the ways in which Sappho influenced Catullus, Horace and Ovid, as well as later writers and painters.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Bravado
Book SynopsisScottee grew up around strong, brave and violent men and boys. Bravado is his memoir of working class masculinity from 1991 to 1999 as seen by a sheep in wolf's clothing. Scottee grew up on a council estate in Kentish Town, where as a child he knew the inside of every pub. In Bravado he goes back to the raw, harsh days of that childhood - growing up among men who worked hard, drank hard and fought hard. He describes his first fight, trying to prove himself to tougher boys and experiences of domestic and sexual abuse. Scottee also grapples with the contradictions of being a gay man who is attracted to working-class men, but also feels scarred by the experience of growing up with them. Bravado was devised as a show that would be performed in typically male, working-class environments such as pubs, garages or changing rooms, and that would be performed by a volunteer who would be paid £100 for reading the script, and receive counselling after the show. Bravado explores the graphic nature of maleness and the extent it will go to succeed. This show is not for the weak-hearted – it includes graphic accounts of violence, abuse, assault and sex.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Researching Sex and Sexualities
Book SynopsisSexuality is a complex and multifaceted domain – encompassing bodily, contextual and subjective experiences that resist ready categorisation. To claim the sexual as a viable research object therefore raises a number of important methodological questions: what is it possible to know about experiences, practices and perceptions of sex and sexualities? What approaches might help or hinder our efforts to probe such experiences? This collection explores the creative, personal and contextual parameters involved in researching sexuality, cutting across disciplinary boundaries and drawing on case studies from a variety of countries and contexts. Combining a wide range of expertise, its contributors address such key areas as pornography, sex work, intersectionality and LGBT perspectives. The contributors also share their own experiences of researching sexuality within contrasting disciplines, as well as interrogating how the sexual identities of researchers themselves can relate to, and inform, their work. The result is a unique and diverse collection that combines practical insights on field work with novel theoretical reflections.Trade ReviewA very welcome addition to the field. It will be enormously useful for developing reflective research across a range of disciplines. * Feona Attwood, Middlesex University *A rich and engaging exploration of the ways in which multifaceted sexual subjects and diverse sexual practices are situated, embodied and experienced in different contexts. Jessica Kingsley Publishers How to Stop Homophobic and Biphobic Bullying: A
Book SynopsisThis vital teachers' guide to challenging homophobic and biphobic bullying offers unique insights to address the issue at its core. With a renewed focus on a whole school approach, it builds capacity in those who work with young people and inspires an inclusive approach in every setting. Laying out clear advice on how to recognise, stop and prevent homophobic and biphobic bullying, readers are given strategies to work with its perpetrators, bystanders and targets. The author explains how to handle disclosures regarding sexual orientation and provides advice on effective Anti-Bullying Policy referencing homophobic and biphobic bullying. Based upon the work of the UK's leading and award-winning LGBT+ anti-bullying charity Educational Action Challenging Homophobia (EACH) this book additionally explores why young people are too often reluctant to report these forms of bullying; the increasing role of the online environment and the profound impacts bullying can have well into adulthood. Written by an expert in this field, this essential guide is for teachers, youth workers, the care sector and anyone with a duty of care towards young people.Trade ReviewThis book on the bullying of gay, lesbian and bisexual pupils is well-organised, sensible, and packed with useful information for teachers as well as parents and pupils themselves. It can be highly recommended as a handbook to help tackle this important issue in the school context. -- Peter K Smith, Goldsmiths, University of London, UKWe have been incredibly fortunate to have benefitted from Jonathan's outstanding work with our school over the last 10 years. He has helped us shape our school's attitudes and ethos regarding LGBT matters. He has delivered inspirational training to our staff that has engaged and educated, as well as being a key focus for developing our policy and practice across the LGBT field and homophobic and biphobic bullying. Further, and most importantly, Jonathan has had huge impact on our student community: being thought provoking and challenging, yet balancing that with real sensitivity and an impressive ability to listen and empathise. We are proud to be associated with Jonathan's book, his work with EACH and he continues to be our 'go to' for his expert advice and guidance across this area of our students' lives and experiences. -- Steve Moir, Headteacher at Bradley Stoke Community SchoolThis is an essential read for any school leader who is serious about tackling homophobic and biphobic bullying - and that should be all school leaders! It provides straightforward, practical advice and will make sure you are meeting your legal and moral obligations to keep children safe. -- Lauren Seager-Smith FRSA, CEO KidscapeSchool leaders often talk about moral purpose and creating a fair and just society. Jonathan Charlesworth continues to give direction, insight and practical guidance on matters very directly to connected to this important aspect of what schools are about. Jonathan's expert exploration of key equalities issues inspired me - instilling confidence and understanding. School leaders seeking knowledge, insight and the assurance to recognise, stop and prevent homophobic or biphobic bullying will find it in this indispensable book. -- Roland Lovatt, Headteacher, Yeo Moor Primary School, Clevedon, North SomersetWith his many years of experience - both in teaching and leading a charity challenging this form of bullying and discrimination - Jonathan Charlesworth brings a calm wisdom to an issue that schools, colleges and alternative provision often struggle to address successfully. Prejudice related behaviour among students often reflects the environment our young people grow up in. This makes challenging prejudice and discrimination difficult when it may be learned at home or on the media and young people think it is justified. Schools will be better able to do so and make school a safe place with this book at their side. From the basics through to thoughtful considerations of complex situations, the author provides the essentials every teacher needs and will be inspired by.Charlesworth consulted young people and teachers and describes a gap between the lived experience of the young people and the views of the staff. These valuable insights should encourage schools to listen to their student body and change their interventions. Recent changes in legislation in the UK and in Ireland; and a new curriculum for RSE, all have to be assimilated into practice along with the Equality Act. But this is no dry text about law. Threaded throughout are practical tips and advice for the sensitive handling of disclosures and practice strategies that schools will implement in modern Britain. This should be required reading in teacher training and for all pastoral leads. It will be essential for anyone handling behaviour in schools and those preparing for statutory RSE. -- Adrienne Katz FRSA, Director of Youthworks and 2018 joint winner of Inspirational Individual of the Year by the Ben Cohen Stand-up foundationWe have worked with Jonathan and EACH several times and our students and staff have always gained so much from their time with him. His original book, which helped develop understanding of how to recognise, stop and prevent homophobic bullying, was vital to our key staff in this important and ever-evolving area. Jonathan's ability to allow informative, open discussion and debate in a safe and secure environment has really enabled all students to feel more equipped and empowered to deal with challenging topics. His experience and expertise is captured in this new book. We very much look forward to making best use of this. -- Cameron Shaw, Principal, Bristol Metropolitan Academy (part of the Cabot Learning Federation)Education is about more than just the taught subjects on the school timetable. For an education to mean anything at all, our young people need to leave school with a sense of who they are. Our schools need to provide them with the skills, knowledge, character and confidence to assert their identity, in whatever form they find it. Bullying of any kind undermines that process so it is our responsibility as educators to challenge it. Jonathan Charlesworth offers an essential guide for educators who seek to understand the complexity of issues faced by young people concerning their emerging sexual identity. He explains accessibly the homophobic or biphobic bullying which can accompany the coming out (or indeed not coming out) of our lesbian, gay, bisexual or questioning students. If our schools are to be truly inclusive we must understand and adjust to enable all our young people to thrive - however they identify. Jonathan's book is a key part of our toolkit in developing the schools that all our children need. -- Chris Hildrew, HeadteacherTable of ContentsAcknowledgements; Preface; Introduction; Chapter 1: What Is Homophobic And Biphobic Bullying?; Chapter 2: Who Experiences Homophobic And Biphobic Bullying?; Chapter 3: Who Perpetuates Homophobic And Biphobic Bullying?; Chapter 4: Why Do Young People Bully Homophobically Or Biphobically?; Chapter 5: What Is The Impact On Those Being Bullied?; Chapter 6: How To Respond: Practical Advice; Chapter 7: Working With Those Who Bully; Chapter 8: Sensitive Handling Of Disclosures; Chapter 9: Prevention; Chapter 10: Anti-Bullying Policies And Creating Inclusive Environments; Chapter 11: Frequently Asked Questions; Chapter 12: Last Words; Appendix 1: Section 28 Of The Local Government Act 1988; Appendix 2: Rse Guidelines And Homophobic And Biphobic Bullying; Appendix 3: DfE Guidelines For Primary School Facing Protests Against New Rse Curriculum; Appendix 4: Senior Leadership Team Guidance; Anti-Homophobic Bullying Posters And Sexual Orientation Glossary; References

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Caravaggio
Book SynopsisCaravaggio (1986), Derek Jarman's portrait of the Italian Baroque artist, shows the painter at work with models drawn from Rome's homeless and prostitutes, and his relationship with two very different lovers: Ranuccio, played by Sean Bean, and Lena, played by Tilda Swinton. It is probably the closest Derek Jarman came to a mainstream film. And yet the film is a uniquely complex and lucid treatment of Jarman's major concerns: violence, history, homosexuality, and the relation between film and painting. In particular, according to Leo Bersani and Ulysse Dutoit, Caravaggio is unlike Jarman's other work in avoiding a sentimentalising of gay relationships and in making no neat distinction between the exercise and the suffering of violence. Film-making involves a coercive power which, for Bersani and Dutoit, Jarman may, without admitting it to himself, have found deeply seductive. But in Caravaggio this power is renounced, and the result is Jarman’s most profound, unsettling and astonishing reflection on sexuality and identity.Table of ContentsDerek Jarman’s Caravaggio Notes Credits

Across a career spanning five decades, he has made path breaking contributions to our understanding of stardom and celebrity, gay and queer politics and cultural history, film music, race and whiteness and the pleasures of popular entertainment. The Richard Dyer Reader brings together for the first time key writings by this vital and influential figure, many of which are not otherwise available. The anthology guides readers through Dyer’s prolific and rich output through six thematic selections of essays and extracts, each centred on a key theme in Dyer's work: stardom and the image; entertainment and ideology; gay politics and representation; whiteness; the pleasures of popular entertainment, and textual analysis. A seventh section comprises a selection of interviews conducted across the span of his career, as well as a new interview with editors Glyn Davis and Jaap Kooijman. The book will provide an introduction for those new to Dyer’s writings, as well as offering a fresh perspective for readers with a more comprehensive knowledge of his work. The collection includes archival and recent pieces of writing never previously anthologised, newly commissioned essays, a substantial introduction to Dyer’s life and work and framing introduction to each section.Trade ReviewRichard Dyer is one of the most important film scholars in the world – establishing the fields of star and sexuality studies while exercising a huge influence on the analysis of race and gender in popular culture. Medina Publishing Ltd Out On An Island
Book Synopsis**Shortlisted for the International Book Award 2023** Based on deeply personal testimonies and factual research, Out on An Island presents a rich and diverse portrayal of Isle of Wight LGBTQ+ history. Shining a light on stories of struggle and truth shared through recorded oral histories, this is a book which unearths a public history and cultural heritage hidden for over a century. In a collaborative effort among LGBTQ+ Island residents, Out on An Island signifies the first ever project dedicated to local LGBTQ+ oral history on the Isle of Wight. Created in remarkable circumstances, it celebrates a close-knit community surviving together in the face of exclusion, prejudice and misrepresentation. The result is an inspiring collection of interviews from LGBTQ+ people concerning their lives on the Island. The oral histories are shared in a matter-of-fact style, with accounts of disturbing homophobia, rejection and exclusion peppered with moments of joy and celebration. From beginning to end are stories of courage and despair which stand as powerful testaments of human endeavour. While some of the LGBTQ+ community were proud to call the Isle of Wight their home, others feared discrimination, and were desperate to escape. Read about the fierce, enigmatic lesbian Joe Carstairs, and the adventures of the all-female Ferguson's Gang in Newtown in the 1920s. Delving into the Island's 1980s gay scene, hear accounts of a community thriving in the face of negative local press and the grim shadow of Section 28. Onwards to the 1990s, experience the moment the Island welcomed its first ever local Gay Guide; and in the not-so-distant past, learn about a lingering culture of homophobia exposed by the Island's first Pride in 2017, and the resignations of reputable local journalist Charlotte Hofton, and the Island's Conservative MP Andrew Turner. A testament to the history, lives, social and political contribution of the Isle of Wight LGBTQ+ community for future generations, Out On An Island restores a shared and vibrant past. Instigating a broader dialogue on what can be complex and sensitive topics, readers are provided with a better understanding of the importance of equality, inclusion and the hurdles individuals must overcome to be their authentic selves.

Aurora Metro Publications 50 LGBTQI+ who changed the World
Book SynopsisMarsha P. Johnson, Keith Haring, Harvey Milk, Audre Lorde, RuPaul... the names of pioneers and trailblazers who have advanced the LGBTQI+ cause and helped bring about new human rights. This book pays tribute in 50 portraits to the activists, personalities, writers and artists who have advanced the LGBTQI+ movement and celebrates those who have fought and are fighting every day to create a more inclusive and tolerant world. To coincide with a new touring exhibition of Florent Manelli's artworks.Trade Review"A wonderful way to learn more about living LGBT+ history through the people who peacefully challenge the world to be more inclusive and above all, happier." - Tony Malone, writer of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion: The Practical Guide; "From Marsha P. Johnson to Adrian de la Vega, via Hamed Sinno, Laverne Cox, Jean Chong, Anohni or Hanne Gaby Odiele (and yes, I chose to end with the Belgian personality of the book!), the author puts women, men and others at the heart of the LGBT+ cause, showing in passing that there is not only one way to be militant and that the path to a more inclusive world can take many directions. Biographical directories are non-fiction books that I particularly like. I'm more of a fictional reader, so being able to inform myself through a book that gathers information to peck at will is what suits me best. Each portrait is an opportunity to discover a part of LGBTQI+ history and the issues facing the people concerned. The graphic beauty of the book makes you want to come back to it regularly, and I particularly appreciate the diversity of the people represented, both in terms of gender identities and sexual orientations as well as ethnic origins. An essential to discover in a short time a whole part of queer culture and, in the words of the author himself, "to celebrate the courage, the beauty of being and the rage to live by being oneself". --The Literary BlogTable of ContentsForeword 5 Introduction 9 Profiles Bayard Rustin 22 Alan Turing 28 Tom of Finland 36 Edith Windsor 44 Harvey Milk 48 Barbara Gittings 56 Audre Lorde 60 Renee Richards 66 Nancy Cardenas 70 Larry Kramer 74 Miss Major Griffin-Gracy 80 Craig Rodwell 84 Armistead Maupin 90 Marsha P. BenBella Books A Sinner in Mecca: A Gay Muslim's Hajj of
Book SynopsisFrom the recipient of a 2018 Guggenheim Fellow Based on the New York Times' Critic Pick documentary "The first book about the Hajj from a gay perspective, written by a man with a deep knowledge of Islamic history. This pilgrimage is the centerpiece of his book, and he recounts it with courage and fierce emotion." —The Guardian This is the Islam you've never been allowed to see. Daringly reported from its frontlines and forbidden to most of humanity for centuries. The Hajj pilgrimage is a journey every Muslim is commanded by God to go on at least once in a lifetime if they are able and, like millions, Parvez Sharma believes his spiritual salvation lies at Islam's ground zero, Mecca. But unlike the journeys of his fellow Muslims, the consequences of his own could be deadly. In A Sinner in Mecca, author, filmmaker, and 2018 Guggenheim Fellow Parvez chronicles his pilgrimage as a very openly gay Muslim to Saudi Arabia, where Islam's heart beats . . . and where being true to himself is punishable by death. Risking his life, Parvez embarks on a Jihad of the self—filming his experience along the way. Already under fire for his documentary A Jihad for Love, which looks at the coexistence of Islam and homosexuality, he would undoubtedly face savage punishment if exposed—from being thrown off a cliff to public beheading. Parvez's odyssey is at once audacious, global, and remarkable. He meets everyone from extremists to explorers of the spiritual kind and the world they open up is frightening . . . yet breathtaking. In Mecca, Parvez comes out to a pilgrim, who then asks him why he would want to be part of something that wants no part of him. This book is his answer to this question and many more. Parvez provides an unflinching look at our troubling unfolding history, including Hizbullah, ISIS, Trump, the race-wars, an embattled Europe, and more. He offers real solutions, borne of his efforts to get his hands dirty to find them. This is a lived history—and its author is no armchair theorist. Following the New York Times Critics' Pick hit documentary of the same title, A Sinner in Mecca unflinchingly showcases parts of the dangerous ideology that governs today's ISIS and how much it has in common with Saudi Arabia's sacred, yet treacherous dogma, Wahhabi Islam. A Sinner in Mecca is simultaneously one man's personal odyssey as well as a groundbreaking, provocative revelation of a clandestine world and its fastest growing and most contested religion.Trade Review"The first book about the Hajj from a gay perspective, written by a man with a deep knowledge of Islamic history. This pilgrimage is the centerpiece of his book, and he recounts it with courage and fierce emotion." —The Guardian "You will never think the same way about Saudi Arabia and Islam after reading this beautifully written book." —Washington Book Review "Sharma's spiritual search is intimate and careful, and ultimately one of understanding." —Foreword Reviews "Sharma's . . . book uses that trip not only to gain perspective on extremists and religion, but as a glass to view the world here in the United States, the challenges felt by the Muslim community, and the oppressive weight of the Trump admisistration."—Towerload "Parvez's heroism is rare and his courage well-documented. Putting his own life at risk, he takes us on a surprising and compelling journey through the frontlines of his much contested faith. A brilliant follow up to his films, A Jihad for Love and A Sinner in Mecca." —Reza Aslan, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Zealot "In our lives, we face a choice of whether to live with judgment or reach deep within ourselves to find an inner moral compass that leads us to a metaphorical Mecca of unconditional love. With his powerful, brave book, A Sinner in Mecca, Parvez Sharma takes us on his hero's pilgrimage, teaching us of an ethereal truth: the qibla, or direction of Mecca, resides within each one of our hearts." —Asra Q. Nomani, author of Standing Alone: An American Woman's Struggle for the Soul of Islam "Parvez Sharma's Hajj pilgrimage is not only a journey to Mecca but to his deepest self. Both a Muslim and an out gay man, Sharma writes bravely and brilliantly. His religion is ancient. His story is timeless." —Kevin Sessums, New York Times bestselling author of Mississippi Sissy and I Left It On the Mountain "Sharma's gripping journey unfolds with cinematic splendor, giving those of us who will never experience the hajj firsthand the next best thing. This book examines modern Islam's beauty and its ugliness with an unflinching gaze and a hopeful vision for its future." —Cole Stryker, author of Hacking the Future and Epic Win for Anonymous "As a gay man and a Muslim, Parvez Sharma's unique personal journey is reflected in this powerful examination of faith, sexuality, and gender. In a divided world, Sharma fearlessly crosses the boundaries and barriers that separate us from each other and finds common ground in the search for love and truth."—Cleve Jones, author of When We Rise

Verlag Barbara Budrich Blurring Boundaries – ‘Anti-Gender’ Ideology
Table of ContentsIntroduction: Blurring Boundaries.
