Cambridge University Press LGBTI Rights in Turkey
Book SynopsisThe LGBTI community in Turkey face real dangers. In 2015, the Turkish police interrupted the LGBTI Pride march in Istanbul, using tear gas and rubber bullets against the marchers. This marked the first attempt by the authorities to stop the parade by force, and similar actions occurred the following year. Here, Fait Muedini examines these levels of discrimination in Turkey, as well as exploring how activists are working to improve human rights for LGBTI individuals living in this hostile environment. Muedini bases his analysis on interviews taken with a number of NGO leaders and activists of leading LGBTI organisations in the region, including Lambda Istanbul, Kaos GL, Pembe Hayat, Social Policies, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Studies Association (SPoD), and Families of LGBT''s in Istanbul (LISTAG). The original information provided by these interviews illuminate the challenges facing the LGBTI community, and the brave actions taken by activists in their attempts to challengeTable of Contents1. Palgrave MacMillan UK Homosexuality and Italian Cinema From the Fall of Fascism to the Years of Lead
Book SynopsisBesides tracing the evolution of representations through both art and popular films, this book also analyses connections with consumer culture, film criticism and politics. Through archival research and a survey of more than 600 films, the author enriches our understanding of thirty years of Italian film and cultural history.Trade Review“The book sounds like it will adopt a historicist approach that reads Italian films in terms of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ images of homosexuality. … One of the strengths of this highly readable, often witty book is precisely the author’s flexibility of approach. … Giori’s book is a valuable contribution to a growing body of work in Queer Italian Studies.” (John Champagne, gender / sexuality / Italy, Vol. 6, 2019)Table of Contents1. Bloomsbury Publishing (UK) Queer Cities Queer Cultures
Book SynopsisMatt Cook is Senior Lecturer in History and Gender Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, and co-director of the Raphael Samuel History Centre.Trade ReviewCook and Evans' anthology offers a rich analytic assemblage of urban queer culture in Europe from 1945 to the present time ... This (reasonably priced) anthology serves as sound multidisciplinary textbook for students and scholars who want to gain multifaceted historical understandings of the dynamic interrelationships between queer, space and sociability in urban Europe and the intrinsically ambivalent and shifting mindsets about queer citizenship. -- Martin Zebracki, University of Leeds, UK * Gender, Place & Culture: A Journal of Feminist Geography *Despite different approaches, each contributor provides an informative narrative that identifies key factors in a city’s queer history: e.g., the memorialization of Nazi persecution of gays in Berlin, the fallout of the ‘sexual revolution’ and Amsterdam’s reputation as a tolerant ‘gay capital,’ the mixing of Western secular and Muslim cultures in Istanbul, and life in Madrid as it moved from dictatorship to democracy … A strong collection and a good introduction to contemporary European queer history. Rowman & Littlefield Sexual Minorities and Politics
Book SynopsisThe political representation and involvement of sexual minorities in the United States has been highly contested and fiercely debated. As recent legislative and judicial victories create inroads towards equality for this growing population, members and advocates of these minorities navigate evolving political and legal systems while continuing to fight against societal and institutional resistance. Sexual Minorities and Politics is the first textbook to provide students with an up-to-date, thorough, and comprehensive overview of the historical, political, and legal status of sexual and gender minorities. Skillfully synthesizing the research of political scientists, political theorists, and historians, Jason Pierceson describes the history of the LGBT rights movement, chronicles the building of political and legal movements and the responses to them, examines philosophical debates within and about the movement, and assesses the current state of the politics and policies concerning sexuaTrade ReviewSexual Minorities and Politics is masterfully done, providing the reader with a comprehensive, timely, and accessible account of LGBT political advocacy. Instructors will find the text versatile for a number of courses across (and within) disciplines. Pierceson also discusses a number of emerging issues that will make the text relevant beyond its initial publication, especially since these public policy questions are unlikely to be ‘settled’ for some time. Finally, the book’s historical analysis should make it a staple despite the dynamic nature of LGBT issues; the how and why regarding LGBT political activism and group mobilization are illuminating for scholarship more generally. * Journal of Political Science *Accessible and comprehensive, the book gives a great overview of all of the major developments in the United States, combining history, theory, and empirical evidence from the latest research... Widely adaptable for courses in political science or interdisciplinary sexuality/LGBT studies. -- Shawn Schulenberg, Director of Graduate Studies, Department of Political Science, Marshall UniversityWell written, comprehensive, and compelling. It is no exaggeration to say this is the best sexuality and politics textbook on the market. -- Charles Anthony "Tony" Smith, University of California, IrvineTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: The Emergence of a Movement for Sexual Minorities and its Opposition in the United States Chapter 3: Political Theory Chapter 4: Social Movements, Electoral Politics, and Public Opinion Chapter 5: Courts and the LGBT Rights Movement Chapter 6: Public Policies Chapter 7: The Transgender and Intersex Movements, Law, and Policy Chapter 8: Global Developments

Rowman & Littlefield Masculinities in the Making
Book SynopsisIn Masculinities in the Making, James W. Messerschmidt unravels the mysteries surrounding the question of how masculinities are actually made. One of the most respected scholars on the subject of masculinities, Messerschmidt brings together three seemingly disparate groupswimps, genderqueers, and U.S. presidentsto examine what insight each has to offer our understanding of masculinities. The book is unique in its coverage, including a revised structured action theory; an intersectional analysis of sex, gender, and sexuality; and an examination of the differences among masculinities from the local to the global. Messerschmidt provides a fresh, accessible, and provocative argument that significantly advances our knowledge on masculinities.Trade ReviewA leading figure in the interdisciplinary field of men's and masculinity studies, Messerschmidt takes a novel approach in theorizing on masculinity: he looks at its social construction over the life course. In chapters devoted to interviews with what he labels ‘wimps’ and ‘genderqueers’ and content analysis of presidential speeches by Barack Obama and George Bush, the author offers a poignant illustration of the relationship between personal life history and sex, gender, and sexuality construction. Messerschmidt has a long history with this topic, and he draws heavily on his own previously published work, with the result that in places the book seems like a unique form of meta-analysis. That said, he does so with an eye aimed squarely on developing a revised ‘structured action theory,’ one paying particular attention to the intersection of gender, sex, and sexuality in masculinity’s construction. Perhaps Messerschmidt's greatest contribution, however, is found in the conclusion of the book: he provides ten well-thought-out, clearly articulated suggestions for future research on masculinity. Scholars—especially those beginning their careers—will be well served by reading this section closely and heeding the author’s sage advice. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty. * CHOICE *In the final and short concluding chapter, James Messerschmidt advances ten priorities for future directions for masculinity scholars that arise from his analysis of the case studies. It is a fine way to finish the book, and it poses some excellent challenges for future research on men and masculinities. Although perhaps not ideal for complete newcomers to this field of study, in bringing James Messerschmidt’s theoretical and empirical work together in one volume, this book will be of immense value to masculinity and gender studies scholars, especially those who are exploring the research implications of hegemonic masculinity and masculinities as forms of structured action. * Gender And Development *Basically we get a new way of looking at key concepts and what we see is backed-up by data. By examining new gender practices and the older patterns of dominance, Messerschmidt provides valuable ways of looking at masculinity. * Reviews by Amos Lassen *This book is indispensable for anyone working in the area of gender. James W. Messerschmidt, one of the founders of masculinities studies, refines and expands the concept and theory of masculinities as structured action, and illustrates this analysis with wimps and genderqueers. He ends by provocatively focusing on Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, both of whom portrayed themselves in their speeches as ‘hegemonic masculine heroic protectors.’ The result is an excellent combination of original theory and close-read data. -- Judith Lorber, professor emerita, Graduate School and Brooklyn College, CUNY; author of Breaking the Bowls: Degendering and Feminist ChangeJames W. Messerschmidt has a rare gift: he uses the well-chosen case study to make bigger and bigger claims, not by imposing some prepackaged theoretical frame onto his subjects, but by letting them frame their own stories. From micro-level interactions of gender nonconforming guys to public performances of our most recent presidents, Masculinities in the Making is both compelling and thoughtful. -- Michael Kimmel, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies, Stony Brook UniversityMasculinities in the Making is an important contribution to gender studies—a book that develops hegemonic masculinity theory, discusses new non-conformist sex and gender patterns, and includes an utterly scary analysis of how masculine fantasy can become global political reality. Warmly recommended! -- Øystein Gullvåg Holter, Centre for Gender Research, University of OsloIn Masculinities in the Making, James W. Messerschmidt brings together some of his key ideas, ranging from theoretical and sociological concerns such as structure and action, to detailed analyses of wimps, genderqueers, and US presidents. The book shows the complexity of this venture and sets out a clear agenda for further and future studies of masculinities. This is another must-read for all those concerned with these questions. -- Jeff Hearn, Örebro University, Sweden; Hanken School of Economics, Finland; University of Huddersfield, UK; and author of Men of the WorldIn this book, James Messerschmidt, one of today’s leading researchers on masculinities, re-thinks key concepts and offers rich data. Masculinities in the Making brings us inside the turbulence of young people’s lives through fine-grained case studies, and also takes us to global power politics, in the Bush and Obama presidencies. Both new gender practices and old patterns of dominance come into view. This important text will be valuable to everyone concerned with questions about masculinity and the lives of men. -- Raewyn Connell, University of Sydney; author of Gender: In World Perspective and MasculinitiesTable of ContentsPreface 1.Hegemony and Beyond 2.Masculinities as Structured Action 3.Wimps: Sam and Jerry 4.Genderqueers: Jessie and Morgan 5.Presidents: Bush and Obama Conclusions References Index

Lexington Books The Economies of Queer Inclusion
Book SynopsisThe Economies of Queer Inclusion explores the formation of relationships between US-based transnational human rights actors and grassroots LGBTI activists in Kampala, Uganda. In doing so, it exposes the unintended consequences of finance-based connections and proposes alternative forms of transnational activism.Trade ReviewI love this book. Rodriguez shares her passionate and erudite “counter-story” to the harmful tropes circulating in the West about “African homophobia” and, by extension, imputed black savagery and white superiority. An autoethnography grounded in wide-ranging critical scholarship, it provides a powerful wake-up call to those gay rights activists in the West who assume their interventions in Africa are necessarily needed, wanted, and helpful. It is also a deeply-moving clarion call for queer people of color in Uganda and the United States, and in Africa and the West more broadly, to develop their own languages of resistance to homophobic nationalism, to white supremacy, to neo-imperialism, and to the corrosive class politics that, until now, have only been discreetly alluded to studies of queer activism in Africa. Rodriguez makes a major contribution to our understanding of current weaknesses in transnational queer activism, and hence to imagining ways out of the impasse.
