Book Synopsis Over ten thousand copies sold!'Powerfully insightful book. . . . I am not aware of a more valuable first resource to help shape our thinking on this very contemporary issue.' —Dr. Fred G. Zaspel, Calvary Baptist SeminaryHomosexuality is one of the most controversial moral issues of our day. Headlines teem with stories of athletes “coming out,” politicians changing positions, and courts handing down same-sex marriage rulings.Sadly the church has often been afraid to talk about homosexuality. Many Christians feel confused and divided between the call to love and the call for truth. And many who struggle with unwanted same-sex attraction feel alone and alienated by the church. The time is ripe for God’s people to think and speak about same-sex attraction in a way that is both biblical and beneficial. We must reject our fears and misunderstandings and see ourselves together in need of the grace of Jesus. Love Into Light is designed to move the church toward that end.Written from the heart of a pastor with a love for people and a sensitivity to our culture, Love Into Light is your next step toward becoming more faithfully and helpfully engaged with people in your families, in your church and in your neighborhood.

  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Feminism and War: Confronting US Imperialism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWomen across the globe are being dramatically affected by war as currently waged by the USA. But there has been little public space for dialogue about the complex relationship between feminism, women, and war. The editors of Feminism and War have brought together a diverse set of leading theorists and activists who examine the questions raised by ongoing American military initiatives, such as: What are the implications of an imperial nation/state laying claim to women's liberation? What is the relation between this claim and resulting American foreign policy and military action? Did American intervention and invasion in fact result in liberation for women in Afghanistan and Iraq? What multiple concepts are embedded in the phrase "women’s liberation"? How are these connected to the specifics of religion, culture, history, economics, and nation within current conflicts? What is the relation between the lives of Afghan and Iraqi women before and after invasion, and that of women living in the US? How do women who define themselves as feminists resist or acquiesce to this nation/state claim in current theory and organizing? Feminism and War reveals and critically analyzes the complicated ways in which America uses gender, race, class, nationalism, imperialism to justify, legitimate, and continue war. Each chapter builds on the next to develop an anti-racist, feminist politics that places imperialist power, and forms of resistance to it, central to its comprehensive analysis.Trade Review'A cogent, passionate and damning anti-racist feminist exposè and dissection of the politics of contemporary US warmongering and its devastating impacts. An essential reference point for all those committed to mobilising against imperialist capitalism, war and globalisation.' 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is situated at the intersection of queer/gender studies and theories of acting pedagogy and performance. It explores the social and cultural matrix in which matters of gender are negotiated, including that of post-secondary theatre and drama education. It identifies the predicament of gender dissident actors who must contend with the widespread enforcement of realist paradigms within the academy, and proposes a re-imagining of the way drama/theatre/performance are practised in order to serve more fairly and effectively the needs of queer actors in training. This is located within a larger project of critique in reference to the art form as a whole. The book stimulates discussion among practitioners and scholars on matters concerning various kinds of diversity: of gender expression, of approaches to the teaching of acting, and to the way the art form may be imagined and executed in the early years of the 21st Century, in particular in the face of the climate crisis. But it is also an aid to practitioners who are seeking new theoretical and practical approaches to dealing with gender diversity in acting pedagogy. Trade Review“Acting Queer was written for post-secondary theatre educators, especially practitioners, but I would suggest sharing it with department and college administrators also. … he also intends the book for ‘students themselves who may be asking troubling though perhaps productive questions … who is teaching them? What are they being taught and why?’ … . I look forward to asking these questions alongside students and discovering what may be possible when heteronormative gender roles are actively subverted in our pedagogy.” (Emily Finck, Theatre Topics, Vol. 32 (1), March, 2022)Table of Contents1.
