  • Making Sense of Race Class and Gender Commonsense

Taylor & Francis Ltd Making Sense of Race Class and Gender Commonsense

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisUsing arresting case studies of how ordinary people understand the concepts of race, class, and gender, Celine-Marie Pascale shows that the peculiarity of commonsense is that it imposes obviousness-that which we cannot fail to recognize. As a result, how we negotiate the challenges of inequality in the twenty-first century may depend less on what people consciously think about difference and more on what we inadvertently assume. Through an analysis of commonsense knowledge, Pascale expertly provides new insights into familiar topics. In addition, by analyzing local practices in the context of established cultural discourses, Pascale shows how the weight of history bears on the present moment, both enabling and constraining possibilities. Pascale tests the boundaries of sociological knowledge and offers new avenues for conceptualizing social change.Table of ContentsChapter One Introduction 1 Chapter Two Routine Matters of Race 47 Chapter Three All The Right Stuff: Gender and Sexuality 97 Chapter Four Class: A Representational Economy 143 Chapter Five Moving Forward 190 Appendix A Interviewees 201 Appendix B Data Collection of Newspaper Articles 202 References 204

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisAn excellent resource for teaching and learning, this book explores the rise and decline of left radicalism in Scotland c.1872 to 1932. A journey through these turbulent times observes the response of Scottish artisans to legal restrictions on trade-union activities in the 1870s, trade union formation among the unskilled from the late 1880s, and the origins and impact of the Scottish socialist movement. The Labour movement in Scotland was to face many new challenges by the twentieth century. During the era of ''Red Scotland'', 1910 to 1922, we see Scottish workers fully engaged in the labour and social unrest in the years before the Great War; monitor the incubation of workers'' grievances during the war; see the growth of the anti-war movement and the influence of revolutionary politics from 1918; and witness Scottish Labour on the threshold of an extraordinary political breakthrough by 1922. The 1920s saw the rapid rise of Labour, but growing unemployment and a massive emigration of Scottish workers helped to fragment the left and set in motion the decline of left radicalism in Scotland. This book represents a major and up to date survey of the most dramatic years in the history of Scottish Labour.Table of ContentsContents; Acknowledgements; List of Tables; List of Abbreviations; Introduction; 1. This book observes the response of Scottish artisans to legal restrictions on trade-union activities in the 1870s, trade union formation among the unskilled from the late 1880s, and the origins and impact of the Scottish socialist movement.Trade ReviewKenefick's examinations of socialism in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee give a far more complete picture of Scottish socialism than is typically afforded by popular culture and historiography. -- Matthew L. McDowell, University of Glasgow Kelvingrove Review Kenefick covers a critically important, turbulent and frequently highly contested 60 years of Scottish labour/ radical history in an admirably clear and concise fashion. He presents a wealth of detail and tackles highly controversial topics like 'The Myth of Red Clydeside' in an exceptionally fair, thoughtful and balanced manner. Kenefick is by no means averse to presenting his own analysis of events but he is careful to present a ranges of contrary views in a fair and respectful manner - the joys of invective, editorialising and getting even with one's political/academic enemies are forgone. Kenefick is never less than professional and the further I read into his book the more impressed I became with his judgement and the more persuasive I found his arguments/analysis... ... The analysis focuses on the impact of political radicalism, industrial unrest, war and the Russian revolution. The author notes that the significance of the book does not lie primarily on its original research but rather on the overall distinctiveness of his approach and conclusions... avoids the trap of Glasgowcentricity... ...He is also particularly strong on international events - World War I (his chapter on 'War Resisters and Anti-Conscription' is perhaps the strongest section in the book') the Russian Revolution (including some fascinating material about Scottish Leftists running guns to Russian revolutionaries in the early 1900s), and the Irish Republican struggles etc on the Scottish Left. More unusually he also examines the impact on the Scottish diaspora on political and industrial radicalism overseas... ...Scottish history has been colourfully, and not totally inaccurately, described as being 'one long brawl'. Kenefick has done a fine job of describing and analysing an important part of this saga - the class war in Scotland during one of its most militant and dramatic periods. He is to be commended for his effort. This is a fine book and will, I would expect, be welcomed as both a significant contribution to the field and as an excellent text book for tertiary students. -- Bill Anderson Labour History Kenefick's examinations of socialism in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee give a far more complete picture of Scottish socialism than is typically afforded by popular culture and historiography. After being the leading party in Scotland for 50 years, Labour was shocked to lose an election and office to the SNP in the 2007 Scottish Parliamentary elections, and thunderstruck when the SNP won a majority government in the same elections in 2011. This book analyses the last 30 years of Scottish Labour, from the arrival of Thatcherism in 1979 right up to the results of the 2010 Westminster elections and 2011 Scottish Parliamentary elections.Trade Review'In this significant book, two scholars with a deep understanding of the Labour Party have explored the 'myth of Labour Scotland'. By 'myth' the authors capture the very real strength of Labour in Scotland but also the equally important existence of a widespread belief in Labour's dominance. They explain why the belief in Scottish Labour hegemony was less real than was often imagined and how devolution, especially its more proportional voting system, exposed the myth. The authors explore how this happened and devolution's impact on the party. The book combines public policy analysis, analysis of Labour's changing electoral base, the impact of New Labour, governing Scotland under devolution and its efforts to address the Scottish Question. This is not only the most up to date book on Labour in Scotland but the most comprehensive analysis of the party. It is required reading for anyone seeking to understand modern Scottish politics.' -- Professor James Mitchell, School of Government and Public Policy, University of StrathclydeTable of Contents1. Monthly Review Press,U.S. How to Read Karl Marx

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHas any major thinker been more poorly understood than Karl Marx? Over the last 150 years, his name has been invoked in connection with everything from unemployment insurance to Hollywood to guerrilla wars. Any number of international movements have claimed his teachings as their inspiration. Time after time, authorities have proclaimed the death of Marx''s theories while new and old audiences continue to draw vital insight from the works of the most important philosopher and economist of the industrial era. Ernst Fischer has crafted a brief, clear, and faithful exposition of Marx''s main premises, with particular emphasis on historical context. Book SynopsisEconomic inequality has reached historic highs worldwide. Almost half the world's wealth is now owned by just 1% of the population. Disparities in the distribution of wealth have grown far more extreme than disparities in income. This is the result of a broken 'system' and no amount of business-as-usual will solve it, the author argues.Trade Review"Governments across the world are grappling with the increasingly toxic issue of social and economic inequalities. This book by Tom Burgess contributes some bold and imaginative ideas to the ongoing debate with a view to coming up with a package of practical solutions designed to bring about a reduction in financial hardship currently experienced by so many people worldwide." Professor David Wilson, Emeritus Professor and Pro-Chancellor, De Montfort University// "A sound, common sense approach to engaging business for the greater good where we all can profit. It is not enough for business to have a social conscience. It is the performance that counts. Tom Burgess offers a practical agenda to engage the philosophy of a corporate social conscience through initiatives such as tax reform, profit allocation and self-financing infrastructure investment. A defining statement which should be read by all entrepreneurs who seek a clear alternative perspective to progress their business." David A Kerfoot MBE DL// "Long before Piketty quantified it, some thinkers realized that a chasm of inequality had been opening up over the past twenty-five years between the have-nots and the have-alls (leaving aside the increasingly squeezed middle). Burgess was one of these early thinkers, and his thesis that zero-sum economics is socially and financially destructive is the product of a generation's-worth of hard thinking on the matter. The analysis and solutions Burgess puts forward are radical and urgently in need of implementation." Prof. Chris Green, Formerly Associate Professor in the Faculty of Humanities, Hong Kong Polytechnic University // "A century ago, civic-minded business people who understood how concentrated wealth undermines our democracy helped launch the struggle that toppled America's original plutocracy. In Income for me/ wealth for we, Burgess reignites that civic-minded spirit." Sam Pizzigati, Associate Fellow, Institute for Policy Studies, Washington DC and author of The Rich Don't Always Win // "Burgess presents a much-needed path to engage both the wealthy and everyone else. It isn't punitive, it is inclusive. It isn't billionaire bashing, it's bridge building. The principle of 'Income for me, wealth for we' is not just practical, it is executable. This book outlines an agenda to build balance again with greater opportunity, a healthy middle class and a productive environment for the continued creation of wealth for the benefit of all, not just the few."
