Book SynopsisFocusing on male-on-male rape, this book looks at the common myths surrounding this taboo issue, including the idea that ''men who rape other men must be homosexual'' and that ''real men can''t be raped''. It also reveals that men are not only raped in prison, as is commonly believed, and that they suffer similar trauma to female survivors of rape.Trade Review'Although the topic of male rape is receiving increasing research interest in the forensic, clinical and social psychological literature, there are currently very few academic texts relating to this issue. I applaud Dr. Abdullah-Kahn for under-taking this timely and potentially very useful book.' Palgrave MacMillan UK The English Jacobin Novel on Rights Property and the Law
Book SynopsisThe English Jacobin Novel on Rights, Property and the Law is a study of the radical novel's critique of the evolving social contract in the 1790s.Trade Review'Johnson's argument goes straight to the heart of novel studies: fiction privileged property as the basis of enfranchisement and so limited the democratizing process it envisioned. The genius of her book is to come at this paradox through the curious body of fiction written during the period following revolutions in North America and France for the expressed purpose of exposing the limits of the Lockean model of government. This strikingly fresh look at the Jacobin novel shows it embracing fiction as culture's most powerful political medium and challenging the premises of modern nation building. In focusing on these particular novels, she therefore deals with the very topics that preoccupy scholars who read and write about fiction in any epoch, namely, the gendered identity of citizenship, the restriction of political agency, and the difficulty of imagining a future of collective transformation.' - Nancy Armstrong, Nancy Duke Lewis Professor, Brown University, USATable of ContentsIntroduction Narrativizing a Critique of the Contract Debating Rights, Property and the Law Envisaging the New Citizen Acquiring Political Agency Bestowing the Mantle Bibliography Index

Kogan Page Ltd Employment Law
Book SynopsisElizabeth Aylott has over 15 years' experience as an HR specialist and lecturer in areas of Employment Law and Employee Relations. After a career in HR both in industry and the charitable sector, she joined the Hampshire Business School where she lectured on CIPD programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. She is based in Surrey, UK.Trade Review"The compact yet extremely informative text will prove invaluable to both students and professionals in in the HR and legal fields. What stands out is the clarity in which complicated concepts are broken down and no assumption of legal knowledge is made, or jargon used. Diagrams are used where appropriate to ensure a full understanding of systems and processes. I thoroughly recommend this text." * Adam Doyle, Director of Careers and Enterprise, Royal Docks School of Business and Law, University of East London *"This book has been written clearly and concisely and will be very useful to students as well as professionals. Each topic covers comprehensive aspects of case law and case studies for easy understanding. How I wish this book was out while I was studying my MSc. in Human Resources Management to easily learn key points with ease and to acquire good grades. A must buy." * Enide Freeman, Administrator, Brixton Prison *"When looking for a good text, you have to ask yourself what learners, HR professionals and line managers with responsibility for people actually need and want: knowledge which is accessible, comprehensive and easy to apply in the real world. Employment law and practice are dynamic areas which often require quick decision-making rather than trawling through dry accounts of case law for an answer. This book offers that depth and knowledge while remaining a concise and easily understood reference point for a diverse range of employment and HR topics." * Chris Dobbs, Employment Solicitor, Frettens Solicitors *"As an HR professional, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to educate people about their rights at work, as well as help HR professionals to think more broadly about their profession. Having had the opportunity to attend Elizabeth's Employment Law seminars, I am proud to say that Elizabeth had a major influence on my career choice as I was hugely inspired by her knowledge and expertise which she shared with us with a great passion. Following Elizabeth Aylott's Employment Law 1st and 2nd editions, I found the 3rd edition as interesting as the first two. As a past HRM student, I would highly recommend the 3rd edition to all students who wish to embark on their career as HR professionals. The book provides in-depth knowledge on Employment Law and the core principles and legislation of HR Management in global business which I found fascinating." * Karine Harutyunyan, HR Business Partner at the Security Industry Authority *Table of Contents Chapter - 00: Introduction; Section - ONE: Fundamentals; Chapter - 01: What is employment law?; Chapter - 02: The importance of employment law; Chapter - 03: Employment law and strategy; Section - TWO: In practice; Chapter - 04: How it works; Chapter - 05: How you do it; Chapter - 06: Planning and action; Chapter - 07: Measurement; Chapter - 08: Conclusions and Government changes to employment law

Beyond Bias presents a compelling explanation of the reasons for this failure. Current diversity initiatives focus primarily on teaching people to be less biased and more inclusive. But this is the wrong focus. As Beyond Bias make clear, workplace gender inequality is a systemic problem caused largely by the (unintended) discriminatory operation of personnel systems, policies, and practices. Beyond Bias presents the four-prong PATH program for directly attacking this structural discrimination-and with it, individuals'' discriminatory conduct: Prioritize Elimination of Exclusionary Behavior Adopt Bias-free Methods of Decision-Making Treat Inequality in the Home as a Workplace Problem Halt Unequal Performance Evaluations and Leadership Development OpportunitiesTrade ReviewBeyond Bias offers a curated introduction to the literature on workplace gender bias, and many concrete steps organizations can take to interrupt bias by providing more structure in their business systems. -- Joan C. Here, with the New York Times bestselling writer Ariane Conrad, he shows how history is about to enter age of the Citizen. Unleashing the power of everyone equips us to face the challenges of economic insecurity, climate crisis, public health threats, and polarisation. Citizens is an upbeat handbook, full of insights, clear examples to follow, and inspiring case studies, from the slums of Kenya to the backstreets of Birmingham – and a foreword by Brian Eno. Brian Eno sets out the value of Citizens in framing a new, optimistic cooperative story for our age, as opposed to the two other options: authoritarian states such as China and "Siliconia" - "a Consumer state with centralised power and deep surveillance". Mentions Citizen Story 1. Opening. Jon Alexander sets out the need to 'step into' the Citizen Story so that we can deal with the many challenges of our age: economic insecurity, ecological emergency, public health threats, political polarisation, and more. How humans are bound together through interdependence and reciprocity, and in turn have a deep bond with nature, which conventional big business cannot understand. Picks apart the self-dependence and utilitarian philosophy of tech billionaires Peter Thiel and Mark Zuckerberg 3. Citizens By Nature. Central to the Citizen Story is a belief in ourselves and in human nature as creative, capable, and caring, rather than lazy, self-interested, and competitive within a zero-sum framework. Any redesign of institutions will fail if we haven’t embraced this fundamental belief 4. We're All Consumers Now. Mentions Apple Macintosh, Ridley Scott, consumer demand, Consumer Story, George Orwell 1984, Virgin Atlantic, Richard Branson, IKEA, Walmart, Virgin Galactic 5. Once We Were Subjects. The rest of us are innocents, ignorant of important matters. Mentions King Sargon of Akkad and Mesopotamia 6. Citizen NGOs. The Consumer Story is falling apart, but the truth alone is not enough to ensure it passes to the Citizen Story. We must act too, to seize control of our futures, and to ensure that we actually have a future. Case studies include the National Trust in the UK 7. Citizen Business. How businesses can harness the power of the Citizen Story to make their workings more popular and inclusive, and to drive forward societal change. Case studies include the brewery BrewDog in Stonehaven, Scotland. Mentions Martin Dickie, Tesco, craft beer, Equity Punks 8. Citizen Government. Taiwan has pioneered the application of citizen government, in stark comparison to Communist China, which offers a vision of an alternative, authoritarian future. Examples include Paris approving a standing Citizens' Assembly and Chile's Citizen-driven Constitutional Convention. Harvard University Press The Known Citizen
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewMasterful (and timely)…Privacy is clearly a protean concept, and Igo deftly reviews the definitions that scholars have offered in their efforts to cage its elusive essence. She judges these attempts helpful but less than conclusive. Her own ambitious solution is to embrace privacy’s multifariousness. In her marathon trek from Victorian propriety to social media exhibitionism, she recounts dozens of forgotten public debates…Utterly original. -- David Greenberg * Washington Post *A mighty effort to tell the story of modern America as a story of anxieties about privacy… Igo is an intelligent interpreter of the facts…She shows us that although we may feel that the threat to privacy today is unprecedented, every generation has felt that way since the introduction of the postcard. -- Louis Menand * New Yorker *[An] excellent new book on privacy in America…Igo follows the different ways in which Americans have been scrutinized—in the home, school, and workplace; by the state, the press, and marketing firms, corporations and psychologists, data aggregators and algorithms…Her book can…help us better understand our own debates over privacy today. -- Katrina Forrester * Harper’s *A masterful study of privacy in the United States. -- Sue Halpern * New York Review of Books *Engaging and wide-ranging…Igo’s analysis of state surveillance from the New Deal through Watergate is remarkably thorough and insightful. -- Katie Fitzpatrick * The Nation *A highly readable new history of privacy in America [that] offers insight into the ways attitudes have evolved as different forms of identification, and different expectations of privacy, have emerged. -- Katrina Gulliver * Reason *Luminous… For a century and a half, people in this country have been arguing at high volume about privacy… Today, we are watched as never before, through surreptitious governmental data collection and through corporate profiles of our desires and habits. Yet we also divulge private matters aggressively, seeking freedom through publicity. * Dissent *Monumental…In vigorous, smooth-flowing prose, case by case and landmark by landmark, Igo tells this story with an authority and insight no previous comprehensive account has achieved…The Known Citizen is the best history yet to appear of the long road leading to that unprecedented privacy crisis, and she concludes by observing that no matter how altered the modern landscape is, we cannot do without privacy. -- Steve Donoghue * Open Letters Review *While most studies of privacy dwell on laws, court decisions, and other regulations, the premise of Igo’s book is that we might gain a better vantage point if we think about privacy as part and parcel of a larger culture…Igo tracks shifts in popular expectations about privacy across disciplines, decades, and media forms. -- Palmer Rampell * Public Books *Igo brilliantly interrogates the long history of privacy’s much-heralded demise and its shape-shifting meaning in the modern United States…A tour de force of cultural history that maps out privacy’s sprawling legal, social, and moral terrain with tremendous insight and verve…This is a major achievement and an essential guide to the competing and often contradictory dynamics of exposure and recognition in our intensively mediated society. -- Josh Lauer * American Historical Review *Brilliant…Capture[s] the shifting cultural moods around privacy…to reveal their relevance in the American public sphere…A literary and historical gem that deserves a wide readership. -- David Lyon * American Journal of Sociology *Sweeping [and] meticulously researched… Igo gives us the definitive biography of an idea that all readers should both cherish and fear… The Known Citizen is essential reading. -- Hamilton Cain * Chapter 16 *From prison cells to memoirs, from suburban living to the big data revolution, this remarkable book chronicles how Americans have defined, debated, and litigated privacy for more than a hundred years. The Known Citizen shows that drawing the line between the private self and public citizen has been the essential modern social question. -- Robert O. Self, author of All in the Family: The Realignment of American Democracy since the 1960sA masterful history of the role that privacy has played in the lives of American citizens. Following the ‘known citizen’ over time, Igo brilliantly reveals what it means to be modern—to claim protection against the prying eyes of marketers or the national security state while making one’s self more visible by a social security number or disclosing intimate secrets on social media. An amazing book! -- Brian Balogh, author of The Associational State: American Governance in the Twentieth CenturyIn this deeply researched and wonderfully astute history of the rise of privacy as a problem in American society, Sarah Igo shows us how privacy in our liberal culture has always been about both protection of one’s self from public view and control of the narrative by which one wants to be known. -- Dorothy Ross, Johns Hopkins University

C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Between God and the Sultan: A History of Islamic
Book SynopsisToday's discussions on Islam and the place religion should have in society often lead to questions about the Shari'a - Islamic law. Those who work for a political role for Islam demand that the Shari'a must be applied in their country, while those critical of Islam use the law as proof of its 'medieval' character. Islam is sometimes, not quite justly, called a 'religion of rules', and the rules of Islam are the Shari'a. But it is often hard to establish the exact nature of this law in more practical terms. Asking those who favour it or those who oppose it may only lead to greater confusion. But a rule and its exact opposite can both be said to be 'what the Shari'a says' and what God demands of the believer. It may even be questioned if there is any Shari'a at all in the work-a-day world, or whether it is just an ethical ideal, or a body whose secrets are known only to God. At the same time people may be stoned or mutilated in the name of this law. The key to understanding Shari'a is the concept of 'religious law', a term which might seem contradictory. 'Religion' is faith in a non-material force of some kind, and something we consider internal to the human soul. 'Law', on the other hand, is external to us, established by society in order to regulate the material needs of the community. The contrast between 'religion' and 'law' has been continuous throughout Muslim history. Islamic law has always existed in a tension between these two forces: God, who gave the law, and the state - the 'sultan' - representing society and implementing the law. This tension and dynamic have created a very particular history for the law - in how it was formulated and by whom, in its theoretical basis and its actual rules, and in how it was practised in historical reality from the time of its formation till today. That is the main theme of the book. Knut S. Vikor aims in this book to introduce the development and practice of Islamic law to a wide readership: students, lawyers and the growing number of those interested in Islamic civilisation. He summarises the main concepts of Islamic jurisprudence, discusses debates concerning the historicity of Islamic sources of dogma and the dating of early Islamic law; describes the classic practice of the law, in the formulation of legal rules and practice in the courts; and sets out various substantive legal rules, on such vital matters as the family and economic activity.Trade ReviewAn excellent introduction to Islamic law … It fulfils its aim of providing a rounded history of the subject, combined with studies of particular areas of the law (criminal law, family law, land and tax law) … a very important contribution to the field. -- Robert Gleave
