  • A Drink at the Bar: A memoir of crime, justice

Quiller Publishing Ltd A Drink at the Bar: A memoir of crime, justice

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA Drink at the Bar: A memoir of crime, justice and overcoming personal demons is the witty, opinionated and revealing memoirs of Judge Graham Boal QC, a criminal barrister for thirty years before serving as a judge for nine years until his retirement as a Permanent Judge at London’s Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey, in 2005. Boal's career highlights included his being the legendary George Carman's junior in the Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe's trial for conspiracy to murder in 1979, leading for the Crown at the Appeal of the Birmingham Six in 1991 and becoming First Senior Treasury Counsel. His memories of key cases in his career are fascinating but his day-to-day experiences, and the underlying legal issues and happenstance, are every bit as revealing and interesting. Boal has been described as ‘clubbable’, a man who enjoys cricket, golf and life in a Norfolk village, but as his brilliant career progressed he found himself increasingly dependent on the demon alcohol. He went into treatment for alcoholism and depression in 1993, and has been a recovering alcoholic ever since, including his years as a judge at the Old Bailey, the court at which most of the most serious criminal cases in the country are tried. This intriguing memoir reveals the many inside stories of classic criminal cases and the author is unstinting in his analysis of his professional achievements and personal struggles. This will be an essential read for all those interested in legal and political issues and the toll that the pressures of high office can put on one’s personal life and wellbeing. The author is now a trustee and board member of WDP, a leading addiction charity.Trade ReviewWitty and engaging. It offers a fascinating ringside seat at some of the most high-profile trials in modern English legal history, together with a brutally honest account of the writer’s descent into alcoholism and depression — and his rise out of it.As you would expect from a former Old Bailey judge, Graham Boal QC is searingly honest about the challenges he has faced — and overcome. Well aware that, as he puts it, “there are few more boring experiences than ploughing through the reminiscences of retired barristers and judges”, Boal takes us through his early life and career at a reasonably brisk pace. Writing about one’s human frailties is entirely commendable and Boal, 77, dedicates his book to the Westminster Drug Project, where he serves as a trustee and board member. While later chapters of Boal’s book make for painful reading, this is a story with a happy ending. Boal recovered. Despite everything, then, [he] considers himself to be a very lucky man indeed. -- Joshua Rozenburg * A Lawyer Writes *...a searingly honest and engaging account of failings and redemption.Offering readers a candid portrayal of his alcoholism and depression, which were inevitably intertwined, this book’s appeal extends beyond the narrow readership of practising lawyers and fellow judges. His angst may regularly punctuate the narrative, washed down with recollections of tumblers full of whisky, but they do not dominate Boal’s story. Instead, they are neatly interwoven with his 30-year stretch as a criminal barrister, during which time he became First Senior Treasury Counsel. -- Dominic Carman * Reports Legal *This book is marvellous fun and gloriously entertaining. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

  • The Equality Act 2010 in Mental Health: A Guide

Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Equality Act 2010 in Mental Health: A Guide

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Equality Act 2010 in Mental Health provides a critical guide to the Act: what it means for mental health services and how it should be implemented. It addresses each of the nine characteristics protected by the Act in turn, examining the research and practice issue associated with each and offering positive guidance. Contributors also highlight the broader issues associated with achieving equality in mental health, including conflicts between different forms of discrimination, the impact of budget cuts and the issue of inequality in wider society and how it relates to the mental health services. Finally, the book tackles organisational change and the implications for management practice, organisational structures and staff training. This book will be a valuable resource for those involved in providing mental health services, including managers and frontline workers across health and social care.Trade ReviewIt consolidates and extends a range of previous legislation in respect of race relations, gender discrimination and disability discrimination by outlining nine 'protected characteristics'. A number of guides have been written to help practitioners implement the Act but this appears to be the first with a specific focus on its possible implications for all those working within mental health services. This book aims to be an accessible guide to legal and technical information on the Act and attempts to provide practical ways of putting equality into mental health practice. -- The Psychiatric BulletinThis is an accessible, easy to understand and stimulating book on what can often be seen as either a theoretical topic or about addressing political correctness. -- British Journal of Occupational TherapyThis book is both rich and fascinating. It combines deep theoretical insight with acute pragmatism and never fails to engage the reader. The book will provide an indispensable guide to anyone who wishes to understand the context in which equality legislation must be implemented, or, frankly, why that legislation became necessary in the first place. -- David Hewitt, Solicitor and partner at Weightmans LLP, UK and author of The Nearest Relative Handbook 2nd editionTable of ContentsForeword. • Mediation Skills and Strategies: A Practical

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Mediation Skills and Strategies: A Practical

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMediation is a process that can be used to resolve conflict in many different dispute contexts. This book focuses on the essential skills and strategies needed by any mediator to be successful in their work.Tony Whatling draws on his extensive experience in the field of mediation to explain the range of skills and strategies that are commonly used, as well as why you would use different skills and when they are best employed. The author shows how, by adopting these techniques, a mediator can manage challenging conflicts. It features the use of questioning skills and how they can be used effectively, as well as how to deal with high emotion and negative responses. This book is essential for anyone who wants to improve their mediation skills, whether as a trainee, novice or experienced professional.Trade ReviewTony Whatling has done exactly what he set out to do: to offer a straightforward, comprehensive description of core mediation skills and strategies... The manyexamples that are included in the book as a whole bring the mediation process to life, endorse the power of core mediation skills and provide encouragement and a reminder to all mediators to practise and develop those skills in order to be effective in helping people to take charge and resolve conflicts positively for themselves. It deserves a place on all our bookshelves. -- Family LawTony Whatling has written this book to fill a gap he identified in mediation-related literature. Whilst books on conflict theory, legal issues, and how to manage the mediation process and its stages abound, it is the author's contention that there are but few works offering a 'straightforward, comprehensive collection of mediator skills and strategies'. Whether he is correct in his assessment or not, there can be little doubt that mediation practitioners should be glad that he made it, for he has produced a fine book to plug the hole. The book may be a practical guide, but it is more than just a 'how to' manual. Whatling shares with the reader the assumptions and principles which inform his practice and his thinking. -- Mediation DigestA positive "gem" of insight and wisdom! Tony Whatling draws on nearly three decades of experience as a mediator and trainer to explain in simple phraseology a variety of mediation models; the skills that accompany them and their appropriate use...There is value for everyone in this book from those individuals in the process of training or recently qualified, to experienced mediators. The publication includes plenty to refresh knowledge, review skills and acquire alternative perspectives... The author achieves simplicity with thoroughness; easy to read yet with observations based on a wealth of personal experience and expertise. -- Academy of Experts JournalThis is an excellent practice guide to mediation, which will be of benefit to anyone working in public or private law who has to mediate between two or more parties, even if not carrying out full 'mediation'. In a short text, the author initially takes the reader through the essential principles of mediation (voluntary participation, neutrality, impartiality and confidentiality), discusses various models of processes in mediation and the attributes of mediators, before going on to consider more detailed issues. He uses examples all through the text. -- CAFCASSThe reader of this book is indeed fortunate to have the benefit of Tony Whatling's unique wealth of mediation practice, training and teaching experience distilled so accessibly. This clear and comprehensive exposition of mediator skills and strategies, enriched both by vivid concrete examples and the theoretical literature, is essential reading for anyone wishing to acquire and enhance their mediation expertise. -- Marian Roberts, Visiting Fellow, Department of Law, London School of Economics, and author of Developing the Craft of MediationTony Whatling gathers together pearls of wisdom which he has been passing on to mediation trainees and colleagues for over three decades. His book is remarkably comprehensive, yet very easy to read. For a trainee or inexperienced mediator it will be absolutely invaluable. It affords the opportunity to experienced mediators to refresh, hone and acquire skills in a thoroughly enjoyable read which I unhesitatingly recommend. -- Margot Moffit, Family Law solicitor, family mediator and trainerTable of ContentsIntroduction. 1. Waterside Press Sir William Garrow: His Life, Times and Fight for

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSir William Garrow was born in Middlesex in 1760 and called to the Bar in 1783. He was the dominant figure at the Old Bailey from 1783 to 1793, later becoming an MP, Solicitor-General, Attorney-General and finally a judge and lawmaker within the Common Law Tradition. Garrow is now in the public-eye for daring to challenge entrenched legal ways and means. His 'gifts to the world' include altering the relationship between judge and jury (the former had until then dominated over the latter in criminal trials), helping to forge the presumption of innocence, rules of evidence and ensuring a general right to put forward a defence using a trained lawyer. He gave new meaning to the trial advocate's forensic art of cross-examination, later diverting skills honed as a radical to help the Crown when it was faced with alleged plots, treason and sedition. This is a generous work in which well-known legal historian and biographer John Hostettler and family story-teller Richard Braby (a descendant of Garrow) combine their skills and experience to produce a gem of a book. The lost story of Sir William Garrow and its rediscovery will prove enlightening for professional and general readers alike and provide an invaluable 'missing-link' for legal and social historians. It is also a remarkable work of genealogical research which will register strongly with family historians.Trade Review'A Law book yes, but boring no, a delight to read': Internet Law Book Reviews. • Mary Ann Cotton: Britain's First Female Serial

Waterside Press Mary Ann Cotton: Britain's First Female Serial

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs one of the UK's leading commentators, David Wilson shows how some serial killers stay in the headlines whilst others rapidly become invisible - or "unseen". Yet Mary Ann Cotton is not just the first but perhaps the UK's most prolific female serial killer, with more victims than Myra Hindley, Rosemary West, Beverly Allit or male predators such as Jack the Ripper and Dennis Nielsen. But her own north east of England and criminologists apart, she remains largely forgotten, despite poisoning up to 21 victims in Britain's 'arsenic century'. Exploding myths that every serial killers is a 'monster', the author draws attention to Cotton's charms, allure, capability, skill and ambition - drawing parallels or contrasting the methods and lifestyles of other serial killers from Victorian to modern times. He also shows how events cannot be separated from their social context - here the industrial revolution, growing mobility, women's emancipation. And concerning the reticence of 'human nature', Like Dr Harold Shipman, Cotton was allowed to go on killing despite reasons to suspect her.The book contains other resonances to aid understanding of how serial murderers can continue to kill despite such things as coincidence, gossip, whispers or motives that become more obvious with the benefit of hindsight. It is also a detective story in which the persistence of a single individual saw Cotton tried and executed, events analysed first-hand and in detail from the records.Trade Review'A fascinating book... The historical research is illuminating'- feminists@law; 'The great strength of Wilson's book is in providing an extensive examination of Mary Ann Cotton and the murders she committed, framed within the context of Britain's industrial revolution ... an interesting and useful book'- Howard Journal of Criminal Justice; 'This book is an enthralling read. I started off firmly believing that Mary Ann Cotton was innocent - that, indeed, there had been no murders. David Wilson's meticulous research, his eye for detail, his forensic ability to reconstruct the material that survives, and assess the probabilities where gaps remain in the record, opened my eyes. He does not write generic "true crime", but history of the highest order': Judith Flanders, best-selling author, journalist and historian.

  • Intelligent Policing: How Systems Thinking

Triarchy Press Intelligent Policing: How Systems Thinking

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPolicing is at a crossroads. At a time of unprecedented cuts and increasing levels of demand, the British police service (like many others) faces enormous challenges. Under the most radical reforms the service has ever experienced, its leadership is looking for new approaches that can maintain levels of service delivery and secure efficiency, accountability and public confidence. Recent history shows that applying private sector business models to the public sector often generates hidden costs and unintended consequences that damage productivity and morale. In spite of this evidence, reform programmes and prevailing management practices still seek to enforce approaches that have demonstrably failed. In Intelligent Policing, Simon Guilfoyle proposes a simple and elegant solution that refocuses organisational activity on the service user. Drawing on his own experience as a police officer, he uses a range of evidence to explore the possibilities that systems thinking offers. He clearly outlines how a systems-based approach can bring greater efficiency, improved service delivery, enhanced morale and reduced cost. He shows that the practices and models proposed in the book can be implemented immediately and insists that senior police leaders and policy makers have an ideal opportunity to make lasting improvements today that will resonate throughout policing and leave a positive legacy for the future.. Intelligent Policing is a rich resource for those - in the UK and around the world - who care about delivering an effective policing service in the 21st Century. It will also interest systems theorists for its practical approach to policing and inform academic debate in the fields of management and human behaviour.Trade ReviewThis book could be game changing for the police service. Systems thinking theory can be viewed as complex and challenging, but not for Simon Guilfoyle. In this book he provides a comprehensive and cohesive explanation of the theory based on years of research and his practical experience of applying systems thinking in a policing context. This book provides you with everything you need to know to introduce systems thinking in your workplace, and to convince others to do so too!" Irene Curtis,(President of the Police Superintendents Association of England & Wales) "Traditionally, policing has been 'managed by default': officers are deployed with little heed paid to what they should do and how they should do it. They are usually just left to 'just get on with it'! However, there is much that the police do that they share with other organisations. Suspects need to be admitted into custody, interviewed, fingerprinted, whilst elsewhere witnesses may need to be identified and interviewed. This may entail a more or less complex array of officers and civil staff performing different, but interlocking activities. How can such routine activities be organised and managed better than they are? Simon Guilfoyle thinks he has the answer. This comes not just from a theoretical approach developed far from the streets where real officers must work, but from a fusion of theory and practical (but reflective and thoughtful) experience of policing. Simon Guilfoyle is both an academic and a practitioner, holding the rank of Inspector in the West Midlands Police in which he has served for 18 years. Written in an accessible and engaging style this book will provoke as well as inspire its readers. Those readers should not only be other police officers, but anyone with a professional interest in policing." P.A.J. Waddington, Professor of Social Policy, Hon. Director, Central Institute for the Study of Public Protection, The University of Wolverhampton "Simon Guilfoyle's book is the ultimate antidote to the tick-box culture that has spread through our public services like a computer virus in recent decades. However, whereas others merely point out the absurdities and distortions that may derive from unthinking application of performance targets but have no credible alternative, Guilfoyle has shown that the problem is targets not measurement. To demonstrate this, Guilfoyle takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the various techniques of managing quality from Deming onwards, showing how statistical process control can, through analysis of variations, tell us far more than targets which distort whatever they are intended to measure. What makes Guilfoyle's book different is that these concepts and theories are not only presented with a wealth of practical examples from policing and other fields, but the author's approach is itself developed from experience gained over many years as an operational police officer working and managing in one of the UK's most challenging urban environments. The book is thus no armchair polemic or technocratic discourse, but a set of principles, theories and techniques that have been tried and tested over years. What it shows is that there is no substitute for applying intelligence to the problem of quality in public service delivery, and that the shortcut that performance indicators appear to offer is an illusion that can have devastating consequences. Guilfoyle's book presents complex theories and techniques in a clear and engaging style that is accessible without being simplistic and is ideally suited to use on training courses as well as being an ideal textbook for public sector management. Although the book is primarily concerned with policing, its message and methods will be both relevant and revelatory for students of any field of public service and for public managers at any stage of their career." Dr Adrian Campbell, Head of Masters in Public Administration (MPA) programme,School of Government and Society, University of Birmingham "Simon is a 21st century police officer. He really cares about improving how the police perform their duties. His insights into Systems Thinking and Performance Measurement within UK Policing has developed a cult following within most of the national forces. This book distils and makes accessible Simon's acumen, expertise, empathy and mass of experience and conveys it humorously and articulately to show police officers, both frontline and commanding, that by applying these principles they can make the world a better place." Dr. Mark Johnson,Associate Professor of Operations Management, Assistant Dean (Executive Education). Systems Editor, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, Warwick Business School, University of Warwick "Simon Guilfoyle's Intelligent Policing will rightly attract the attention of police leaders and the policed public throughout the country. By describing his own experience, the lessons he draws should inspire every public service manager. Management is a simple activity that with the best of intentions most managers constantly make more difficult. But by thinking of organisations as systems, and focusing on purpose, demand and capacity, they give themselves the means of keeping it simple (not easy!). The good news is that using these principles managers can transform performance, morale and public perception by doing less of the bad stuff and more of the good. And not just at the top - at every level in the organisation. He did it - so can you." Simon Caulkin,Writer and Management commentator "Targets, MBO, cost-cutting and other misguided management behaviour is demotivating officers, destroying performance and eroding public confidence. In his book, Guilfoyle offers a comprehensive and compelling alternative that should be on every Senior Officer's agenda." Hazel J Cannon, Director of The Deming Forum "This book tears the faltering heart out of the way things have always been done and replaces it with a super-sleek, ultra refined approach that will leave many senior management chilled to their very bones! Inspector Simon Guilfoyle encourages managers, most of whom are stuck in a world of performance targets and knee-jerk priorities, to ditch their current belief systems and adopt a 'systems thinking' approach to their work. A proportionate, measured response will always reap far greater rewards than one born from uninformed management interference based on insufficient and inappropriate data. A real eye-opener for those who currently seek to prove their worth through the presentation of skewed statistics and re-invention of old policy. Bin the targets, acknowledge that there are some acceptable risks and empower your staff - just a few of the changes that might actually make a difference. I just hope that there are some out there who are brave enough to take up the challenge - " Minimum Cover, The Police Officer Blog http://minimumcover.wordpress.com/

Book SynopsisIn this first full-length account of Helena Normanton's life and career, Judith Bourne tells of her fight to join the Bar of England and Wales and open it up to women. The book describes how her ambition was forged as a child after seeing her mother patronised by a solicitor. It tells how the press were quick to pigeon-hole and harass her, leading to disciplinary proceedings for 'self-advertising'. Enmeshed in a world of men, Helena Normanton faced a constant struggle to establish herself against a backdrop of prejudice, misogyny and discrimination - as when solicitors, fearful of the unknown, were reluctant to instruct her, leaving her to take on poor person's cases, dock briefs and those 'deemed suitable for a woman'. But Helena Normanton was a force to be reckoned with. She was not just the first woman to be admitted to an Inn of Court, hold briefs in the High Court and Old Bailey, and (with Rose Heilbron) be made a King's Counsel, but a prolific author, leading feminist and speaker who entranced audiences at home and abroad. Along with the controversies that eternally surrounded her progress and her foibles, this is all contained in this captivating book.Trade Review'[ An ] excellent biography of Helena Normanton, brilliantly researched by Judith Bourne... a captivating book for all aspiring barristers to read'-- Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers; 'Succeeds ... in rendering Helena Normanton as a human being, a woman with grit and aspiration, whose experiences were as often disappointing as they were celebratory ... • Lizzie Borden and the Massachusetts Axe Murders

Waterside Press Lizzie Borden and the Massachusetts Axe Murders

Book SynopsisThe case of Lizzie Bordon is one of the most infamous in criminal history having spawned songs, plays and media speculation. It also ranks as one of the most puzzling. Having been acquitted of the axe murders of both her parents, Borden then returned home and carried on as before only to be roundly ostracised by the stoutly religious local community. Prosecutors never charged anyone else. Here, author Ronald Bartle revisits events in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1892. He explains how her answers to police questions were at times strange and contradictory and her accounts often bizarre. With so many pointers to her involvement in the killings her trial has been compared to that of O J Simpson in the modern day. Whatever the justice of the situation, no-one wanted to see a woman hanged. The case is immortalised in legal folklore as well as the children's skipping rhyme:Lizzie Borden took an axeAnd gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done,She gave her father forty-one.A refreshing account of a very famous case. Contains legal and other analysis. A fly-on-the-wall view of the nineteenth century USA justice system. A true story that reads like a thriller. From the text: "The essence of the prosecution case in the Borden trial is simply: If Lizzie didn't do it who else could have done? But when that is the proposition before a jury trying a defendant who enjoys from start to finish the presumption of innocence that is not enough...There is a difference between feeling certain that the defendant is guilty-and the sufficiency of the evidence to prove it. The method of criminal trial in Anglo-American jurisprudence is weighted in favour of the defendant...But as a system of justice it is, like democracy, though imperfect, better than all the others."Table of ContentsCopyright and publication details; About the author; Acknowledgements; Dedication; Lizzie Borden in Popular Culture; Floorplans. 1.The Case Against Lizzie Borden; 2.The Background; 3.Before the Holocaust; 4.Lizzie's Visit to Alice; 5.The Inquest;6.The Scene is Set; 7.The Murder of Abby Borden; 8.The Murder of Andrew Borden; 9.The Evidence of Hannah Reagan; 10.The Blood Mystery; 11.The Murder Weapon; 12.The Burning of a Dress; 13.The Alibi; 14.The Exclusion of the Inquest Evidence; 15.The Exclusion of the Prussic Acid Evidence; 16.Lizzie's Failure to Give Evidence; 17.Closing Speeches and Charge to the Jury; 18.The Conclusion. Book SynopsisIn August 1966, two weeks after England won the World Cup, and four miles from Wembley Stadium, Harry Roberts and his associates gunned down three unarmed police detectives in front of dozens of primary school children. The nation was outraged and struggled to understand what had happened. Roberts had served in the special forces during the conflict in Malaya and claimed he was assigned to kill selected targets. He returned to the UK keen to continue such work in civilian life, but he was rejected by the two gangs that dominated the London Criminal Underworld in the 1960s, the Krays and the Richardsons. Prophetically, they considered him to be too violent. Following the Shepherd's Bush Massacre, Roberts' accomplices, John Witney and John Duddy, were quickly arrested, but Roberts went to ground, using the survival and camouflage skills that he had learned in the British Army. Harry Roberts and Foxtrot One-One covers every detail of the investigation and manhunt that followed, from arrest, trial and imprisonment to Roberts' eventual (and controversial) release. One of the most notorious crimes of the 20th century. The case that led to the police firearms training arrangements seen today. Looks at the tragic impact on the victims' families. Book SynopsisCelia Wells always felt like an outsider. Her unconventional early life was shaped by her Communist Party parents, she grew up as `town' not `gown' in Oxford, surrounded by books but living in a council house. She has uncovered an intriguing backstory with a bigamous grandmother, a convicted forger cousin transported to Australia in the 1840s, and the rise and fall of landed gentry. The author describes her parents' bohemian friends and their coded language and uses their original wartime correspondence to produce a picture of a fascinating heritage which ran against the grain and shaped an inquiring mind. A Woman in Law shows how the post-war political landscape provided opportunities for women yet failed to shift many entrenched advantages of gender and class. Tracing the rocky path to becoming Cardiff University's first female law professor, the author shows how her distinctive academic research led to different approaches to teaching criminal law as well as contributing to key reforms described in the book. As she asserts, `I wanted to write about my rather confused political and cultural background, and to relate it to my professional and personal life, to my academic writing, to my relationships, and my beliefs, my experiences of suicide and addiction in my close family.'Trade Review'Well written and beautifully composed in terms of the strands [the author] interweaves so successfully'-- Andrew Ashworth CBE; 'Beautifully written and searingly honest ... a rare resource ... emotionally articulate and deeply considered'--Nicola LaceyTable of ContentsForeword Nicola Lacey. Book SynopsisA TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEAR. An undercover investigation into the synthetic-drug epidemic. A new group of chemicals is radically transforming the recreational-drug landscape. Known as novel psychoactive substances (NPS), they range from so-called ‘legal highs’ like Spice, to synthetic opioids – most famously, the deadly fentanyl. Designed to replicate the effects of established drugs like cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, and heroin, NPS are synthesised in laboratories. They are cheap to produce and easy to transport. They are also extremely potent and often deadly. Originally developed for medicinal purposes, and then hijacked by rogue chemists, who change their molecular structures to stay ahead of the law, these chemicals’ effects can be impossible to predict. What we do know is that they have triggered the biggest drug epidemic that America has ever seen, and which is now spreading internationally. In Fentanyl, Inc., award-winning journalist Ben Westhoff goes undercover to investigate the shadowy world of synthetic drugs — becoming, in the process, the first journalist to infiltrate a Chinese fentanyl lab. He tracks down the drug baron in New Zealand who unintentionally helped to start the synthetic-drug revolution; prowls St. Louis streets with a former fentanyl dealer to understand how the epidemic started; and chronicles the lives of addicts and dealers, families of victims, law enforcement officers, and underground drug-awareness organisers in the US and Europe. Fentanyl, Inc. is essential reading on a global calamity we are only just beginning to understand.Trade Review‘It’s a sucker-punch of a read … Westhoff exposes, with cinematic scope and reams of data, a new epidemic.’ -- Harriet Alexander * The Daily Telegraph *‘Groundbreaking.’ -- Eleanor Halls * The Telegraph *‘An eye-opening work of journalism, informed on the legal and pharmaceutical aspects without losing sight of the human cost.’ -- Alastair Mabbott * The Herald *‘A fascinating book.’ -- Seán Moncrieff * The Moncrieff Show *‘Through his courageous reporting, Ben Westhoff takes us to the heart of the problem. In Fentanyl, Inc. he shines a light on the human wreckage and damage caused by the most powerful and dangerous of the opioids, fentanyl, and its derivatives. He shows us how addiction, mislabeling, purposefully or mistakenly mixed drugs lead to tragic ends. The drug is often created out of factories operating with the permission of the Chinese government. To solve this epidemic, we must understand it. Make no mistake; the fentanyl problem is a global issue. Fentanyl, Inc. is a must-read, pulling the curtain back and showing us how this human tragedy occurs and how insidious and addictive a drug can be.’ -- Katherine Tobin, PhD, Former Member of the U.S.-China Economic & Security Review Commission‘A necessary and sobering look at the opioid crisis and how it is not as simple as it appears on the surface. Well-researched and user-friendly for all readers. An important book.’ -- Debra Ginsberg * Bay Books *‘Drawing material from official reports, drug databases, scores of interviews, and years of personal research, Westhoff presents an unflinching, illuminating portrait of a festering crisis involving a drug industry that thrives as effectively as it kills. Highly sobering, exemplary reportage delivered through richly detailed scenarios and diversified perspectives.’ STARRED REVIEW * Kirkus Reviews *‘This is an exceptionally useful and well-timed book. I hope anyone concerned about this era’s new addiction epidemic will read it and put its messages to use. Ben Westhoff very skilfully combines pharmacology, politics, law enforcement, and gripping international intrigue in his account of America’s number-one public health problem. I hope Fentanyl, Inc. is widely read and influential.’ -- James Fallows, award-winning journalist and author of China Airborne‘In Fentanyl, Inc., Ben Westhoff lays bare the twisted history that led to opioids wreaking havoc on twenty-first century America. If you want to understand the bloody cycle of addiction and death gripping the nation, you need to read this book.’ -- Ioan Grillo, author of El Narco and Gangster Warlords‘An information-packed work of reporting that traces the rise of designer drugs, including synthetic and/or more dangerous versions of weed, acid, and heroin, the last of which gives the book its title. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that’s chemically similar to morphine and heroin, is the top cause of fatal drug overdoses in the United States. The most illuminating parts of the book are those that reveal the business practices of Chinese labs that supply illicit fentanyl to U.S. dealers. These labs are a source of death and destabilisation for our country, American officials say, while Chinese leaders contend that it’s on us to deal with Americans’ appetite for the stuff.’ -- Francie Diep * Pacific Standard *‘Westhoff explores the many-tentacled world of illicit opioids, from the streets of East St. Louis to Chinese pharmaceutical companies, from music festivals deep in the Michigan woods to sanctioned ‘shooting up rooms’ in Barcelona, in this frank, insightful, and occasionally searing exposé ... Offers a truly multifaceted view of the landscape of fentanyl use and abuse. The disparate narrative strands he weaves together — including tragic stories of drug users, straightforward analysis of the history of opioid use, tension-filled episodes of drug runs and supplier meet-ups, and the humane and hopeful work of the ‘harm reduction’ movement—all come together to provide a more complex understanding of the rise of, and response to, the opioid epidemic. Westhoff’s well-reported and researched work will likely open eyes, slow knee-jerk responses, and start much needed conversations.’ * Publishers Weekly *‘Excellent’ -- Mary Wakefield * The Spectator *‘Will assist policymakers, activists, and general readers in understanding better how to respond to the drug crisis that is only more intractable now.’ * Library Journal *‘So many substance abuse books are a mix of hysterical in tone and a disappointing ‘paint by numbers’ in their execution, but [Fentanyl, Inc.] really stands out for its research, journalism, and overall analysis ... It is also a great book on China, and how China and the Chinese chemicals industry works, backed up by extensive original investigation ... Definitely recommended.’ -- Tyler Cowen * Marginal Revolution *‘Timely and agonising … [Westhoff’s] book is the product of a four-year deep-dive into the world of designer drugs, and it’s an impressive work of investigative journalism. He interviewed 160 people and visited laboratories all over the world; he even infiltrated a pair of Chinese drug operations.’ * USA Today *‘A history lesson on American drug use and drug laws, a crash course in chemistry and neuroscience, a multifaceted portrait of addiction, and a look at how harm reduction programs can atone for the failures of the War on Drugs … A finely woven and accessible analysis of the connection between university chemistry professors, dark web sales, drug cartels, law enforcement, and the dealers and addicts dependent on it … Westhoff is a skilled and empathetic biographer, and this gift serves the composite of the dealers, users, and bereaved of Fentanyl, Inc. … It’s in this focus on the human cost of the crisis, of empathy over criminalisation, that this accomplished book feels most urgently important.’ * St. Louis Post-Dispatch *‘The most frightening book of the year, and it’s mandatory reading … Epic … This is a story about people, and Fentanyl, Inc. features a roster of villains and victims who stray far from movie archetypes.’ * Dig Boston *‘Setting Fentanyl, Inc. apart from most other books that focus on the supply-side of illegal drugs, Westhoff smartly avoids pro-drug-war narratives that push for an intensified law-and-order response to the proliferation of more potent synthetic drugs … The War on Drugs and misguided law enforcement efforts have not stemmed the spread of fentanyl, but instead have contributed to its takeover, Westhoff carefully explains.’ * Filter *‘Extensively reported and vividly written … Westhoff elevates his impressive examination of the opioid epidemic by reporting on the US government’s failed war on drugs and the promise of innovative ‘harm reduction’ policies that recognise that ‘Just Say No’ is a losing proposition.’ * National Book Review *‘Westhoff looks at the new wave of synthetic drugs that are taking the opioid epidemic to a whole new deadly level. He managed to go undercover into one of the many labs in China where these drugs are being manufactured, and the results of his research there and elsewhere are terrifying … Anyone who is interested in learning more about the opioid crisis, or has read Dopesick, is going to want to check this out.’ * Omnivoracious, the Amazon Book Review *‘A detailed and far-ranging investigation into the production, marketing, and usage of fentanyl reveals an intertwined business network that spans continents and kills thousands.’ * Shelf Awareness *‘In this gripping investigation, Westhoff recounts the deadly consequences of synthetically made drugs and how this phenomenon is beginning spread internationally.’ * Happy Mag *‘The way [Fentanyl, Inc.] looked at every aspect of the novel psychoactive substance trade was unique. From chemists manipulating chemical structures of precursors to fentanyl before countries can ban them, to the dealers, end users and those who want to change the way addiction is treated, Westhoff details it all ... this book is an eyeopener to anyone who reads it of just how coordinated and advanced the illicit drug trade is in aiming to get new highs to market at any cost.’ * Sam Still Reading *‘Fentanyl, Inc. is a wake-up call to us all. Shocking and unnerving.’ -- Judith Baragwanath * Noted *‘The information uncovered by Westhoff, an investigative reporter, will no doubt prove useful to lawmakers, addiction counsellors, and anyone else who is dealing with opioid addiction ... But where the book really shines is in Westhoff’s ability to get inside the lives of his characters, from addicts like Henke and Schwandt, to the scientists who initially developed opioids, to the Chinese chemists who are manufacturing fentanyl knockoffs — and profiting hugely off the global rise of opioid addiction ... a feat of reporting, to be sure. And while the many details Westhoff uncovered are likely to leave some readers enraged, Fentanyl, Inc. is an important book that arrives at a key juncture in the opioid crisis.’ -- Arlene Weintraub * The New York Journal of Books *‘[E]pic ... like Breaking Bad, sure — meets Night of the Living Dead meets New Jack City, Gummo, Kids and Gremlins, with a cast from a lot of the places on President Donald Trump’s ‘shithole’ list ... Westhoff includes ample relevant history.’ -- Chris Faraone * Little Village *‘A really fascinating book on a terrifying subject.’ * Joe Rogan *‘Excellent … Readable and alternately engaging and chilling in its account of the development, deployment, and devastating consequences of NPS … Politicians, police, and the public continue to debate how to handle the use of psychoactive substances in our culture and legal system. Westhoff’s Fentanyl, Inc. should be required reading for anyone who wishes to contribute to a knowledgeable discussion.’ * Winnipeg Free Press *‘A fascinating look into how China is playing a major role in the spread of fentanyl across the US. The book connects the dots between the pharmaceutical companies and their role in the opioid crisis with the Chinese labs manufacturing the illicit fentanyl and manoeuvring it through Mexico to get it into the US. Highly recommend it!’ * Yahoo Finance *Praise for Original Gangstas ‘I trust Ben Westhoff. I trust him to report a story and I trust him to tell a story, and that's exactly what he's done here in Original Gangstas. He's taken what's always felt like an almost impossibly knotted string of storylines and plot points in gangsta rap, the most turbulent version of the most popular music on the planet, and turned them into an airtight and unflinching book. Original Gangstas is as resolute as the people and ideas it sets out to profile, and that is no small feat.’ -- Shea Serrano, New York Times bestselling author of The Rap Year BookPraise for Original Gangstas ‘A provocative, multifaceted portrait of essential rap pioneers who ushered the hip-hop music scene to greatness … As raw, authoritative, and unflinching as the music his narrative chronicles, Westhoff comprehensively uncovers the factual roots of the gangsta rap movement and admirably credits those whose footprints paved the way for the younger rappers emerging today … An elaborately detailed, darkly surprising, definitive history of the LA gangsta rap era.’ STARRED REVIEW * Kirkus *Praise for Dirty South ‘Packed with lively reporting and colourful social history … doesn't shy away from the bigger questions. Westhoff grapples with Southern rap's troubling racial politics and takes on the critics.’ * Rolling Stone *
