Springer Verlag, Singapore Language Teachers at Work: Linking Materials with Classroom Teaching

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines a ubiquitous, yet under-researched, area of language education, i.e., language teachers' use of curriculum materials. It particularly focuses on EFL teachers' use of prescribed curriculum materials in higher education in Mainland China and presents a qualitative, multi-case study involving four Chinese EFL teachersand eight students (two students from each teacher’s class) at one university in Mainland China. Drawing on data from pre-lesson and post-lesson interviews with the teachers, lesson observations, and documents in three consecutive semesters at the target university, the book delineates the processes of materials useinclassroom settings. It also identifies four domains of factors that influenced the enactment of curriculum materials. Most importantly, by adopting Vygotsky’s (1978) mediation theory and Remillard’s (2005) participatory perspective, the book constructs a "curriculum enactment mediation model" to reveal the complex and mediated relations among teachers, learners, curriculum materials, and context. It also recommends practical implications for materials developers, teacher educators, administrators, and policymakers.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction1.1 A global view on the role of textbooks in ELT1.2 Materials use as a research gap in English language education1.3 Aims of the study1.4 Research problems1.5 Structure of the bookChapter 2 Teachers’ use of materials: A sociocultural perspective2.1 Defining key concepts in the study2.1.1 Curriculum materials vs materials2.1.2 Materials use vs materials development2.2 The context of the study2.2.1 The evolution of college English (CE) curriculum in China2.2.2 Five generations of CE textbooks2.3 Research on materials use in ELT2.3.1 Teachers’ ways of using materials in ELT2.3.2 The influencing factors in teachers’ use of materials in ELT2.4 Research on materials use in mainstream education2.4.1 Teachers’ ways of using materials in mainstream education2.4.2 The educative role of curriculum materials in mainstream education2.4.3 The influencing factors in teachers’ curriculum enactment2.5 The theoretical framework of the study2.5.1 Theoretical underpinnings of teacher-curriculum studies 2.5.2 Theoretical underpinnings of this study2.6 SummaryChapter 3 The design of the study3.1 Qualitative multi-case study3.2 Selection of setting, participants and materials3.2.1 The target university3.2.2 Teacher and student participants3.2.3 Target textbook3.3 Data collection3.4 Data analysis3.5 Trustworthiness3.6 SummaryChapter 4 Teachers’ use of curriculum materials4.1 Teachers' use of curriculum materials in the pre-lesson phase4.1.1 Reading4.1.2 Evaluating4.1.3 Appropriating and adapting4.2 Teachers’ use of curriculum materials in the while-lesson phase4.2.1 Transforming4.2.2 Assessing4.2.3 Adapting4.2.4 Improvising4.3 Teachers’ use of curriculum materials in the post-lesson phase4.3.1 Reflecting4.3.2 Reconceiving4.5 SummaryChapter 5 Discussion5.1 The influences on teachers’ enactment of curriculum materials5.1.1 Teachers’ affordances and constraints5.1.2 Students’ affordances and constraints5.1.3 Curriculum affordances and constraints5.1.4 Contextual affordances and constraints5.2 Conceptualizing teachers’ enactment of curriculum materials 5.2.1 Mediations of teachers' use of curriculum materials in the pre-lesson phase 5.2.2 Mediations of teachers’ use of curriculum materials in while-lesson phase5.2.3 Mediations of teachers’ use of curriculum materials in post-lesson phase5.2.4 Mediated relations among teachers, learners, curriculum materials and context5.3 Curriculum enactment mediation model5.4 SummaryChapter 6 Conclusions and implications6.1 Significance of this research6.2 What are the good practices of enacting curriculum materials?6.3 Language teachers' knowledge of materials use6.4 Implications for professional development6.5 Implications for materials development6.6 Implications for teacher education6.7 Limitations and future researchReferencesAppendices

Book SynopsisTop the IELTS is an IELTS book like no other. It recognizes an essential key to the problem: students who struggle with the IELTS have problems mastering English. Hence, while other IELTS books teach strategies with long wordy explanations that hardly make sense to the average student, Top the IELTS focuses on teaching students in the most intuitive way possible: examples. Each unit is systematically broken down to make it simple for any student to Top the IELTS. First, 'Simple Steps' are condensed at the outset for easy reference. Next begins 'Elaboration with Examples' — a section where the 'Simple Steps' are put into practice. As an added bonus, actual student work is included in the elaboration section to reveal the common mistakes made by IELTS-takers. The unit concludes with the 'IELTS Trainer' which allows students a chance to directly put the strategies to practice rather than just throwing students into the deep end by providing a full set of IELTS practice tests.

Book SynopsisThis tried and true reference work reflects the unique use of American Sign Language in Canada.Trade Review"This dictionary is far more extensive than any available in the US. The pictures are clear, the explanations are good and the sample sentences will help my students use this book to expand their ASL vocabulary. Congratulations on the terrific work. The editors and contributors did a fantastic job. This is an AWESOME dictionary! " Bobbie Jackson, CSC, CT, Interpreter Trainer, American River College, Faculty at California State University, Sacramento"The Canadian Dictionary of ASL is...an outstanding work of reference for Canadians....unique in its depth and scope, and its commitment to showing regional differences....If you have any interest in learning or improving your ASL skills, this is a fabulous book." Gael Hannan, Abilities"All of the available dictionary resources are exclusively American, and it is very difficult to find Canadian materials. The Canadian Dictionary of ASL has the Canadian influences and the vocabulary I have been seeking for years. I especially enjoy the signs illustrated specific to a province. I have found quite a bit of difference from Winnipeg to Ontario, and the Dictionary has been a source of clarification for me. Many of the people in my class have put it on their Christmas list. This Dictionary is an incredible piece of work that has been long overdue!" Debra S. Amos, Interpreter Training Program, George Brown College"I thank the Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf for pursuing this project to fruition, and to Ms. Bailey and Ms. Dolby for the years of physical and intellectual energy poured into each letter of the alphabet. It is the most important reference document available to us in the field. The volume can only be described as exceptional." - Tracy Hetman, Interpreter"The Canadian Dictionary of ASL goes beyond any other signed language print dictionary with the detail of information provided with each entry. The editors, Carole Sue Bailey and Kathy Dolby, carefully considered the needs of Deaf readers, novice users of ASL and professional interpreters when organizing content.... It is an outstanding scholarly achievement, due to the depth and breadth of research and planning put into its development." - Denise Smith, President, Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada"Your comprehensive reference manual significantly contributes to the development and dissemination of knowledge about Canada in an important and innovative fashion. Your attention to details, including to the regional sign vocabulary variations, helps ensure that the dynamic nature of the ASL language is preserved and enhanced in Canada....Again, congratulations for your work which sets a standard of excellence and is an example for students and researchers of Canadian studies." Jack Jedwab, Association for Canadian Studies"This dictionary of American Sign Language is a massive accomplishment, and one that we felt...had been very well done. Generally the book was easy to navigate and to understand. The hand signals on the endpapers were well displayed and an excellent resource. The type hierarchies were clear and made word finding easy. The diagrams were good.and were depicted by figures of all ages and genders (a nice touch).... [A]ll in all the book is a fine achievement." Judges, The Alcuin Society 21st Annual Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. Second Prize, Reference"The jury was compelled to recognize the incredible undertaking of publishing what they felt to be a huge contribution to the community." BPAA Awards"Jurors described both the winner, and the silver award book, as world-class, but chose as the winner the book that represents a monumental achievement in publishing." BPAA Awards"Jurors chose this book for being a high achievement in publishing, and the positive impact it has had on the community." BPAA Awards

  • Teaching and Learning Arabic as a Foreign

Georgetown University Press Teaching and Learning Arabic as a Foreign

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis guide clearly and succinctly presents the basic tenets of teaching foreign languages specifically for Arabic teachers. Consolidating findings from second language acquisition (SLA) research and applied linguistics, it covers designing curricula, theory and methods, goals, testing, and research, and intersperses practical information with background literature in order to help teachers improve their teaching of Arabic as a foreign language (TAFL). Karin C. Ryding, a well-regarded scholar of Arabic linguistics and former president of the American Association of Teachers of Arabic, frames the discussion with SLA literature and suggests practical and effective ways of helping students learn. Ryding discusses issues at the core of Arabic teaching effectiveness and the achievement of communicative competence, such as the teaching of pronunciation, speaking, reading, listening, and writing; teaching mixed-level classes; creative classroom organization; corrective feedback; and use of activities and exercises, with plenty of examples from Arabic and tips for teachers. She also covers materials development and proficiency testing, providing study questions and recommended readings for each chapter. This guide, which can be used as a textbook, is the first of its kind aimed specifically at TAFL, and should be of interest to Arabic instructors-in-training, academics, graduate students, linguists, department chairs, language coordinators, and teacher trainers. It also serves as a resource for teachers of other less commonly taught languages (LCTLs), who struggle with similar issues.Table of ContentsTable of ContentsForewordRoger Allen Introduction Part I: Fundamentals of Foreign Language Pedagogy1. Book SynopsisRodnaya rech' with website, an introductory textbook for heritage learners, addresses the unique needs of students who have at least intermediate-level listening and speaking skills on the ACTFL scale but who have underdeveloped or nonexistent literacy skills. With an emphasis on conceptual understanding of vocabulary and grammar, Rodnaya rech' builds students' literacy skills and teaches them to strategically use the linguistic intuition they have gained as heritage speakers while strengthening all four skill areas. The accompanying companion website–included with the book–offers fully integrated exercises to use alongside the text. Rodnaya rech' can be used as the main course material either in an intensive one-semester class or at a more measured pace over two semesters. This book is flexible enough to be used in specialized heritage or in mixed classes. It can also support independent study and learning in less formal settings, such as community schools. For Instructors: Separate print Teacher’s Editions of Rodnaya rech’ are no longer available. Book SynopsisWho is this Gatsby anyhow?" Answering that question, voiced by one of the book's characters, is fundamental to teaching F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Although there is no simple answer, classroom analysis of this classic American novel can lead to a rich exploration of the colorful yet contradictory period Fitzgerald dubbed the Jazz Age. The novel also prompts considerations of novelistic technique, specifically point of view, characterization, and narrative structure. This volume aims to give instructors of The Great Gatsby multiple tools and strategies for teaching the novel and for introducing students to the culture of the 1920s. Part 1, "Materials," reviews the novel's composition history and the scholarly resources related to the novel. In part 2, "Approaches," contributors demonstrate a range of frameworks that usefully inform teaching, from the new historicism to feminist and gender studies to narrative theory. They also examine the novel's complex artistry, variety of motifs and symbol patterns, and cultural and social influences, such as the era's changing racial attitudes, the rise of a new suburban culture, and the dichotomy of East versus West in America.
