English for Academic Purposes, Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache, CLIL, Russisch und Polnisch als Herkunftssprache.

Peter Lang AG Language and Cognitive Aspects of Child
Book Synopsis This book investigates how bilingualism affects children’s language, cognitive and narrative abilities. The data sample derives from 209 8-12 years old bilingual children, in three different targeted languages (Greek-English, Greek-German, Greek-Albanian) along with 100 monolingual Greek children. The children completed baseline and experimental tasks measuring their vocabulary, grammar, cognitive skills, and narrative production abilities. The outcome of this work reveals that learning to read and write in two languages is beneficial for the development of language and cognitive skills. A strong case can be made to the growing bilingual communities in Germany and beyond to provide literacy training in both languages within mainstream schools, afternoon classes outside of the curriculum or in community schools. Peter Lang AG Evaluating Tests of Second Language Development:
Book SynopsisThe book introduces a framework for examining the validity of tests that aim to assess second-language (L2) proficiency development over time and/or in relation to L2 instruction. It also reports the findings of a longitudinal study that aimed to examine the sensitivity to change of a test of L2 proficiency development. Specifically, the study examined changes over time in Progress scores and the linguistic characteristics of essays written in response to Progress by learners who took the test before, during and after a period of L2 instruction in different countries. The book furthers our understanding of the nature of L2 proficiency as it develops over time and in relation to L2 instruction and provides a framework that can be used in future endeavours to design and validate tests of L2 proficiency development. The book is intended for graduate students, test developers, and researchers doing research in applied linguistics and L2 assessment. Peter Lang AG Energising Directed Motivational Currents through
Book SynopsisThis book attempts to demystify concerns surrounding a novel motivational construct known as a Directed Motivational Current. The study aimed at exploring whether a high sense of efficacy may support a person in transforming short-spanned motivational episodes into longitudinal engagement typical for the DMC framework. To this end, a sequential exploratory mixed methodology was used. Subsequently, a link between well-anchored efficacy beliefs and the rate at which DMCs occur was indeed discovered. This was further reinforced by the outcomes of personalised interviews. Eventually, the research yielded several noteworthy conclusions, including the fact that imbuing the DMC structure with elements of efficacy building may lead to long-term, sustained behaviour in a foreign language classroom.Table of Contentslong-term motivation – individual variables – DMC – self-efficacy – second language acquisition – qualitative analysis – quantitative analysis

Peter Lang AG Testing Lexicogrammar: An Investigation into the
Book Synopsis This book explores the construct of language in use, specifically as operationalised through different item types in the Austrian Matura (school-leaving exam). Empirical research on some of these item types is scarce. The author reports on a mixed-methods study. The theoretical frameworks employed are Purpura’s (2004) model of language ability and Weir’s (2005) socio-cognitive framework. The findings suggest that the tasks under investigation assess grammatical form and meaning at the sub-sentential and sentential level. Different item types were also found to target different elements of lexicogrammatical competence. The study contributes to understanding the nature of language in use and sheds light on the application of the socio-cognitive framework to the validation of language in use tasks. Peter Lang AG Multilingual Norms
Book SynopsisMultilinguals are not multiple monolinguals. Yet multilingual assessment proceeds through monolingual norms, as if fair conclusions were possible in the absence of fair comparison. In addition, multilingualism concerns what people do with language, not what languages do to people. Yet research focus remains on multilinguals’ languages, as if languages existed despite their users. This book redresses these paradoxes. Multilingual scholars, teachers and speech-language clinicians from Europe, Asia, Australia and the US contribute the first studies dedicated to multilingual norms, those found in real-life multilingual development, assessment and use.

Peter Lang GmbH Cyclical Learning Processes in Second Language
Book SynopsisThis study of adult second language learning focuses on those aspects of syntactic development which show that the orders in which structures appear reflect principles of behaviour organization in language production. These principles facilitate learning under conditions where attentional capacity is limited. Learning to put the structures of a language into practice is characterised by recurrent orders of automation through repetition. Orders of emergence may be only indirectly related to orders of acquisition.

Peter Lang AG English Core Linguistics: Essays in Honour of D.
Book SynopsisThis volume unites nineteen papers on core topics in linguistics: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, and phraseology of English, exploring both synchronic and diachronic aspects of the English language. The papers have been collected to honour D. J. Allerton, who has taken a keen interest in all of these fields throughout his professional life. He has just retired from his professorship at the university of Basel where he has been professor of English linguistics since 1980. The authors of the contributions are colleagues and former students, all of whom felt inspired by his way of doing linguistics. Topics covered range from the Great Vowel Shift to contemporary changes in World Englishes, and from theoretical questions on the sound system and word formation patterns of English to more applied topics in phraseology and the lexicon.

John Benjamins Publishing Co Dimensions of L2 Performance and Proficiency:
Book SynopsisResearch into complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF) as basic dimensions of second language performance, proficiency and development has received increased attention in SLA. However, the larger picture in this field of research is often obscured by the breadth of scope, multiple objectives and lack of clarity as to how complexity, accuracy and fluency should be defined, operationalized and measured. The present volume showcases current research on CAF by bringing together eleven contributions from renowned international researchers in the field. These contributions not only add to the body of empirical knowledge about L2 use and L2 development by bringing new research findings to light but they also address fundamental theoretical and methodological issues by responding to questions about the nature, manifestation, development and assessment of CAF as multifaceted constructs. Collectively, the chapters in this book illustrate the converging and sometimes diverging approaches that different disciplines bring to CAF research.Table of Contents1. Table of contents; 2. John Benjamins Publishing Co English Prosody in First and Second Language
Book SynopsisDiscover the intricate dynamics of L2 prosody with this pioneering study, which examines how advanced learners from Czech, German, and Spanish backgrounds engage with British and American English intonation. By employing a multidimensional approach - spanning phonetic, phonological, discourse-pragmatic, and sociolinguistic perspectives - this book provides a comprehensive overview of L2 prosodic features, highlighting patterns of intonational phrasing, f0 range, and the use of tones and uptalk. Building on foundational works by Pierrehumbert, Mennen, and Gut, this work bridges significant gaps in the field by comparing different L1 and L2 varieties, integrating diverse linguistic variables, and proposing a multifactorial model of L2 prosody. Relevant for linguists, language educators, and researchers in SLA, the findings offer valuable insights for reducing foreign accents and enhancing intelligibility, making it an essential resource for improving language teaching methodologies and learner outcomes. Dive into this essential guide and elevate your understanding of L2 prosody and its impact on effective communication.

John Benjamins Publishing Co Planning and Task Performance in a Second
Book SynopsisThe last decade has seen a growing body of research investigating various aspects of L2 learners’ performance of tasks. This book focuses on one task implementation variable: planning. It considers theories of how opportunities to plan a task affect performance and tests claims derived from these theories in a series of empirical studies. The book examines different types of planning (i.e. task rehearsal, pre-task planning and within-task planning), addressing both what learners do when they plan and the effects of the different types of planning on L2 production. The choice of planning as the variable for investigation in this book is motivated both by its importance for current theorizing about L2 acquisition (in particular with regard to cognitive theories that view acquisition in terms of information processing) and its utility to language teachers and language testers, for unlike many other constructs in SLA ‘planning’ lends itself to external manipulation. The study of planning, then, provides a suitable forum for demonstrating the interconnectedness of theory, research and pedagogy in SLA.Trade ReviewOverall, this book provides a useful snapshot of current thinking about planning and task performance in L2 instruction and learning. -- Mathias Schulze, University of Waterloo, in Canadian Modern Language Review Vol. 62:2, 2006Table of Contents1. John Benjamins Publishing Co Learnability and the Lexicon: Theories and second
Book SynopsisThis book provides a critical review of recent theories of semantics-syntax correspondences and makes new proposals for constraints on semantic structure relevant to syntax. Data from several languages are presented which suggest that semantic structure in root morphemes is subject to parametric variation which has effect across a variety of verb classes, including locatives, unaccusatives, and psych verbs. The implications for first and second language acquisition are discussed. In particular, it is suggested that different parametric settings may lead to a learnability problem if adult learners do not retain access to sensitivity to underlying semantic organization and morphological differences between languages provided by Universal Grammar. An experiment with Chinese-speaking learners of English is presented which shows that learners initially transfer L1 semantic organization to the L2, but are able to retreat from overgeneralisations and achieve native-like grammars in this area.Suggestions for further research in this rapidly developing area of theory and acquisition research are also made.Trade ReviewThis book is the first and so far most comprehensive study of the acquisition of argument structure in a second language within a generative framework. It is a fascinating window into the cognitive processes of L2 acquisition. It should find a place on the shelves of anyone interested in the relationship between linguistics and language acquisition. -- Antonella Sorace in Journal of Linguistics 36, 2000Table of Contents1. Lannoo Publishers Media-Induced Second Language Acquisition:
Book SynopsisIn many countries, including Belgium, English is pervasively present in public life: it is the number one foreign language in music, computergames and television programmes. As a result, children are extensively exposed to English long before they get their first English class in school. This volume questions to what extent this massive exposure to English actually leads to language acquisition by children prior to instruction of English in school.
