Explication of the newest discoveries pertaining to language in the brain completes the coverage of all major aspects of linguistics from a refreshing and insightful angle. Multilingual Matters Psycholinguistic Approaches to Instructed Second

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book applies a psycholinguistic perspective to instructed second language acquisition, seeking to bridge the gap between second language acquisition research and language teaching practices. It challenges the traditional divide between conscious and unconscious processes, or explicit and implicit learning, and re-envisions this as a continuum of the varying levels of consciousness which can be applied by learners to different language behaviors in the second language classroom. It applies this model to learner development and the classroom context, discussing pedagogical applications for instructors at all levels. This book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in second language acquisition, psycholinguistics and language pedagogy. The accessible discussion of research findings, pedagogical approaches and classroom tasks and activities make this book particularly relevant for language teachers, providing the tools needed to apply second language acquisition research in their classroom.Trade ReviewA richly comprehensive and at the same time very practical introduction to two research strands that often remain disconnected. Walter links psycholinguistic approaches with instructed second language acquisition while focusing on pedagogical implications and student needs. An ideal book for language educators and researchers who value synthesis of theory and practice. * Angelika Kraemer, Cornell University, USA *Walter's book would be a great resource for a L2 pedagogy seminar. Major research insights, including from cognitive science, provide the foundation for accessible recommendations for curriculum and pedagogical planning. Best of all: the integration of K-12 perspectives and research showing the importance of multilingual cultures' insights into language learning. * Silja Weber, Tampere University, Finland *Walter does a lovely job of weaving together the two central traditions of psycholinguistics and pedagogy for understanding instructed second language learning. Based on a detailed survey of the most important research findings, Walter then shows how these findings can profitably illuminate classroom practice and the construction of pedagogical materials and methods. * Brian MacWhinney, Carnegie Mellon University, USA *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction Chapter 1 Instructed SLA: A (Modern) History Chapter 2 The Conscious|Unconscious Divide Chapter 3 Re-envisioning a Conscious–Unconscious Continuum Chapter 4 The Conscious Continuum in Individual Development Chapter 5 Psycholinguistic Processes in the Classroom Chapter 6 Curricular and Pedagogical Recommendations References Index

Book SynopsisEmpirical translation studies is a rapidly evolving research area. This volume, written by world-leading researchers, demonstrates the integration of two new research paradigms: socially-oriented and data driven approaches to empirical translation studies. These two models expand current translation studies and stimulate reader debates around how development of quantitative research methods and integration with advances in translation technologies would significantly increase the research capacities of translation studies. Highly engaging, the volume pioneers the development of socially-oriented innovative research methods to enhance the current research capacities of theoretical (descriptive) translation studies in order to tackle real-life research issues, such as environmental protection and multicultural health promotion. Illustrative case studies are used, bringing insight into advanced research methodologies of designing, developing and analysing large scale digital databases forTrade Review'The book provides a wide range of empirical research on translation, covering the most important areas where research in the area of empirical translation studies takes place.' • Motivation to Learn Multiple Languages in Japan:

Multilingual Matters Motivation to Learn Multiple Languages in Japan:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides rare insights into motivation among extremely successful learners of English and languages other than English (LOTEs) through the analysis of a longitudinal study and the examination of the factors involved in becoming multilingual in a non-multilingual environment. Based on sixteen interview sessions, conducted over the course of nine years while the learners progressed from high school to the world of work, this book offers the story of how two learners persist in English/LOTE learning. The study illuminates the long-term processes through which the interviewees develop ideal English/LOTE selves in an environment where multilingualism is not emphasized and where both English and LOTEs can still be described as foreign languages. Educators and researchers will learn from this study, which stretches our understanding of motivation beyond the recent theorizing of L2 motivation and contributes to the limited research in long-term motivational trajectories and LOTE learning motivation, which is particularly scarce in non-European contexts. The book will be of interest not only to readers in Japan but also to those in other contexts as it offers an example of successful learners who go beyond the pragmatic and instrumentalist view of language learning to hold a more holistic view, thus revealing the factors which can sustain multiple language learning, even in foreign language contexts.Trade ReviewThis book is riveting and illuminating! Readers will be fascinated by the nuanced analyses of the ebbs and flows in the multilingual motivational trajectories of two Japanese learners of multiple languages as they successfully but differently negotiate context and agency over nine years. Takahashi’s new construct of enduring translingual transcultural orientation truly pushes the boundaries of the field of L2 motivation. * Lourdes Ortega, Georgetown University, USA *A fascinating case study of multiple language learning, this monograph breaks new ground in providing an account of persistence in the pursuit of a multilingual future. Examining motivational trajectories as processes in motion, Takahashi’s study will be required reading for anyone interested in L2 perseverance and the long-term dynamics of language learning motivation. * Alastair Henry, Högskolan Väst, Sweden *This book provides a fascinating account of two successful multilingual learners’ nine-year learning journeys. It expands our understanding of multilingual motivation by transcending the traditional research site of school settings, and highlights how lifelong language learning and lived experiences co-shape and coordinate over a long term. The endurance and persistence shown by the learners are truly impressive. * Yongyan Zheng, Fudan University, China *English in Japan is mandatory at all levels of education, from elementary school through to undergraduate university and – while languages other than English (LOTEs) are occasionally available at secondary level and undergraduate levels – LOTE courses are generally not required and thus few in number [...] This is one reason why Takahashi’s book is such a rarity [...] An even more striking aspect of this book is the length of the study it describes: longitudinal work lasting nine years is highly unusual and, for a study based in Japan, very likely the first of its kind. * Matthew Thomas Apple, Ritsumeikan University, Japan, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development 2023 *Takahashi’s research monograph distinguishes itself from many publications on language education by drawing attention to the learning of LOTE in Japan, where explicit policy support is absent [...] The experiences represented in this study undoubtedly echo many language learners’ motivations for multilingual learning in the Asia-Pacific region. Its results should encourage readers to reflect on the educational system and identify areas for positive change concerning the learning and teaching of multiple languages in addition to English. * Junyi Gu, Tongji University, China and Xuesong (Andy) Gao, University of New South Wales, Australia, Asia Pacific Journal of Education, 2023 *Table of ContentsTables and Figures Acknowledgments Abbreviations Part 1: Contextualizing the Study Chapter 1. Book SynopsisThis book is intended to help language teachers to work effectively and successfully with students who have Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs). It enables teachers to gain a thorough understanding of the nature of SpLDs and how these affect both general learning processes and the mechanisms of second language acquisition. In addition, the book explores the particular inclusive methods and techniques of teaching and assessment that foster success in language learning. Language teaching is embedded in a wider social and educational context, and therefore the book also provides an in-depth discussion of general educational issues related to identifying and disclosing disabilities and to making transitions from one institution to the other. The content has been thoroughly updated and revised for the second edition, particularly in the areas of inclusive pedagogies, new evidence-based methods and tools for identifying SpLDs, and new conceptualisations of neurodiversity. The book also includes the latest research on assessment, transition and progression, and the impact of SpLDs on additional language learning.Trade ReviewThis timely and informative book addresses the impact of specific learning differences (SpLDs) on learning additional languages and the knowledge and teaching strategies that teachers need to enhance the language learning of SpLDs. Book SynopsisWhether we grow up with one, two, or several languages during our early years of life, many of us will learn a second, foreign, or heritage language in later years. The field of Second language acquisition (SLA, for short) investigates the human capacity to learn additional languages in late childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, after the first language --in the case of monolinguals-- or languages --in the case of bilinguals-- have already been acquired. Understanding Second Language Acquisition offers a wide-encompassing survey of this burgeoning field, its accumulated findings and proposed theories, its developed research paradigms, and its pending questions for the future. The book zooms in and out of universal, individual, and social forces, in each case evaluating the research findings that have been generated across diverse naturalistic and formal contexts for second language acquisition. Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1977. Learning to read is probably the central educational achievement of any child's life. It is also a central concern for parents and teachers. Leila Berg, known for her work in children's literature, believes that the enjoyment of books and the acquisition of reading and writing is not primarily an academic or a technical skill, but grows from a warmly physical and emotional base of shared enjoyment with another human being. This book traces the varied ways that babies learn to communicate, and discusses the place of books in the lives of different groups in the community. It examines the types of books used in school, and demonstrates that, in many cases, books themselves provide the major inhibition to the development of reading through their stilted and often formalistic vocabulary. The author's aim is that all children's first experience of reading should be a loving and sensuous one, so that they can come to discover the power of books themselves.Table of Contents1.
