  • The English Landscape Garden: A survey

Historic England The English Landscape Garden: A survey

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe 18th-century phenomenon of the English Landscape Garden was so widespread that even today, when so much has been built over or otherwise changed, one is never far from an example throughout England. Although seemingly natural, the English Landscape Garden was generally the result of considerable contrivance, effort and design skill, the result of `the art that conceals art’. It might involve digging lakes, raising or levelling hills, and planting trees, sometimes in vast numbers. Nature was arranged and shown to best advantage. The English landscape garden took many forms, and the variety of manifestations was and remains remarkable. A great number survive, if sometimes in modified form, and can be visited and appreciated. The book is structured so as to give the background to, and motivation for, creating the landscape garden; to summarise the chronology of its development; to chart the most significant writers and theorists; and to consider the range of the many forms it took. The story of the landscape garden is complex, multi-layered and constantly changing in emphasis for such an apparently simple and straightforward construct. This book will help to uncover some of the richness that lies behind a meaningful part of the environment. The book can be regarded as a companion to the volume already published by Historic England, The English Landscape Garden in Europe.Trade ReviewReviews'An authority on the 18th-century garden, the author clearly sees both trees and woods—and, indeed, the whole purview of how and why English gardens assumed such a central role in the Enlightenment—making his latest work an excellent introduction to the subject.’ Tiffany Daneff, Country Life'Symes does an excellent job of synthesizing a large body of research and allowing the reader to distinguish the wood from the trees: the detail is there, but the bigger picture is to the fore. [...] Symes’s book provides an excellent and engaging overview of its subject: one that will satisfy many readers and encourage others to find out more.' • Boydell & Brewer Ltd Charles Bridgeman c.16851738

Book SynopsisAn examination of the garden plans of eighteenth-century landscape architect Charles Bridgeman, shedding light on his artistic vision and contributions to English garden history.Charles Bridgeman was a popular and highly successful landscape architect in the first part of the eighteenth century. He was Royal Gardener to George I and George II, designing the gardens at Kensington Palace for them and working for many of the ruling Whig elite, including Sir Robert Walpole at Houghton Hall in Norfolk. His landscapes were audacious and monumental, but he is barely known outside the world of academic garden history; most of his gardens have disappeared, changed out of all recognition to chime with later tastes shaped by Lancelot Brown's vision of a more "natural" landscape, or buried under housing developments and golf courses; and there is little archaeological or written evidence of his work. This book aims to redress this injustice and rescue his legacy. It draws on the only significant body of evidence which survived him: an extensive but wildly heterogenous corpus of garden plans. Close examination of them reveals an artistic vision heavily influenced by the late seventeenth-century geometric garden but deeply rooted in the "genius of the place", and working methods that include a proto-business model which prefigures the gentleman improvers who followed him. The volume brings him from obscurity to demonstrate his skill as an artist, a manipulator of space on a grand scale and a consummate practitioner, a deserved member of the canon of famous and revered English landscape gardeners.

  • Rutgers University Press Designing Gardens with Flora of the American

Book SynopsisAs recent years have seen alarming declines of insect and bird populations in many states, more gardeners have discovered the importance of including native plants in order to nurture these pollinators and sustain local ecosystems. But when so many popular landscaping designs involve exotic cultivars and invasive plant species, how can you create a garden that is both aesthetically pleasing and ecologically responsible? In this fully revised second edition of the classic guide Designing Gardens with Flora of the American East, gardening expert Carolyn Summers draws upon the most recent research on sustainable landscaping. She is joined in this edition by her daughter, landscape designer Kate Brittenham, offering an intergenerational dialogue about the importance of using indigenous plants that preserve insect and bird habitats. The practical information they provide is equally useful for home gardeners and professionals, including detailed descriptions of keystone trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, and grasses that are native to the Eastern United States. Accompanied by entirely new illustrations and updated plant lists, they offer chic yet eco-friendly landscape designs fully customized for different settings, from suburban yards to corporate office parks. The states covered in this book are CT, DE, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, TN, VA, VT, WI, and WV, as well as southern Quebec and Ontario.

  • Fundamentals of Ornamental Horticulture and

New India Publishing Agency Fundamentals of Ornamental Horticulture and

Book SynopsisOrnamental Horticulture is a specialized branch of horticulture that deals with the commercial cultivation of ornamental plants and the enhancement of the aesthetic appeal of the surrounding environment. It plays a crucial role in improving the overall environment and combating visual pollution through the use of ornamental plants. Flowers, in particular, have been admired by poets and artists for generations not only for their beauty but also for their medicinal properties. The study of ornamental horticulture encompasses two aspects: the cultivation of a wide variety of plants, including annuals, shrubs, climbers, trees, bulbous plants, succulents, cacti, shade-loving plants, and lawns, and their application in beautification programs. However, information on these topics is scattered across different books, making it difficult for students, landscape designers, and scientists to access. Therefore, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive book on the introduction, cultivation, and management of ornamental plants that can meet the demands of horticulture students and florists in India. This book provides a comprehensive guide to the collection, identification, propagation, cultivation, nutritional management, weed control, and plant and flower senescence management of annuals, herbs, shrubs, climbers, and ornamental trees. In addition to these topics, the book also covers bio-aesthetic planning, the basics of landscape design, and flower arrangement. The content is presented in a simple and clear style to make it easily accessible to readers. The book includes the latest available information, and the illustrations have been created using specimens and photographs.
