Book SynopsisThe studio and residential building at Wuhrstrasse 8/10 in Zurich is a unique place: Commissioned by the Painters & Sculptors Cooperative Zurich, founded in 1948, eminent Swiss architect Ernst Gisel (1922–2021) designed this ensemble of buildings comprising 8 apartments and twelve artist studios in 1953. Thus, a utopia of self-organised working and living space became reality. Since then, 54 artists have left their mark on the artistic and cultural life of Zurich and Switzerland from their home on Wuhrstrasse 8/10. This book recounts the history of this extraordinary structure, illustrated with archival plans and documents as well as new and historic photographs. It also examines the political and social dimension of the Wuhrstrasse model and its international impact. Further essays explore how the lives and works of the resident artists are interwoven with contemporary events, and address the artist studio as both an idealised myth and as a real place of work. In inserts created especially for the book, eleven Zurich-based artists, all members of the cooperative themselves, respond to the exemplary model that is the “Atelierhaus.”

Book SynopsisIn 1789, Jedidiah Morse described Newport and its environs as the “Eden of America” in the First Geography of the United States. In the nineteenth century landscape architects such as Frederick Law Olmsted created dramatic gardens by the sea for his wealthy clients, and artists from John Frederick Kensett to Henry James and Thornton Wilder celebrated the city as a verdant paradise in painting, poetry, and prose. America’s Eden: Newport Landscapes through the Ages builds on the city’s iconic reputation as a centuries-old paradise, and establishes Newport as a cultural landscape of national significance. The comprehensive history from European settlement to the present day is illustrated by a treasure trove of rare period maps, paintings and photographs by prominent artists, and drawings and sketches by leading designers. Ten chapters discuss topography, geology, and climate; the history of the city from the early days of colonial New England, through the Gilded Age estates, to the 21st century. A chapter on Living Legends emphasises the importance of Newport’s historic trees. The book serves as a critical resource guide encompassing landscape architecture, fine art, tree and plant propagation, and the conservation of natural sites. A rich story of art, history, design and horticulture awaits readers among the gardens, gazebos and trees of Newport.Table of ContentsForeword; Acknowledgments; A Note from the Author; Introduction: America’s Eden; A Land Blessed and Cursed: Topography, Geology, and Climate; From Eden to Eternity: An Historical Overview; Paradise of New England: The Colonial Era and Early Republic; Case Study Seeing, or Recording the Land: Changing Perspectives on Mapping Newport; Genteel Landscapes: Romantic Villas and Rustic Views; Case Study The Horticulturists; Case Study Touro Park; The Art of Scenery: Design in the Age of the Picturesque; The Gilded Age: Estate Gardens and Urban Forests; Case Study Blooming Beauty; Floral Culture and Fashion during the Gilded Age; Working Landscapes: Gardeners and Greenhouses; The Age of the New: Modernism in the Landscape; Living Legend: Newport’s Historic Trees; Case Study The Sentinels of Eden; An Arborist’s View of Newport and Its Trees; Eden Preserved and Propagated; Conclusion: The Legacy and Future of Eden; Notes; Bibliography; Index; Picture Credits.

Book SynopsisAnyone viewing what we call a “landscape” from a distance will recognise that it is an artefact, a habitat created by humans as part of our built environment. Designing this realm carefully is a discipline that is taking on increasing importance today. Günter Vogt, with his practice in VOGT Landscape Architects and as a professor at ETH Zürich, has developed a set of tools and a working method that incorporate all the different dimensions of the human-designed environment, from the large-scale landscape to the small-scale urban public space. 'Mutation and Morphosis' looks at all the many aspects involved in the collective process of designing and shaping landscapes, from planning to implementation. The model as a tool and the collection as a driving force are illustrated on the basis of an astonishing variety of topics. In theoretical discussions and the examination of detailed dossiers of facts on the ground, a trajectory is traced: from the emergence of new landscapes as a result of climate change to the migration of the wolf to Central Europe, from the impact of invasive plants to the study of geological formation processes. The panorama that unfolds gives us insights into the broad context that landscape architects must consider in their work, exemplified by the outstanding projects realized by VOGT.

Book SynopsisWater is far too valuable of a resource to be disposed as a waste. Working Water presents the work of Denver landscape architecture firm Wenk Associates, highlighting their projects that treat stormwater, and the infrastructure that controls it, as a resource that supports functioning natural systems and enhanced urban open space. Built projects illustrate how stormwater runoff can be directed to support an intimate private garden, to the large-scale redevelopment of derelict industrial lands in Milwaukee organised around a stormwater park and open space system. Planning projects range from a plan for a surface stormwater system developed incrementally for a redeveloping urban district in central Denver, to a multi-generational plan for restoration of the Los Angeles River that will require profound changes in stormwater management policies and practice for full implementation. The final chapter describes the challenges, strategies, and lessons learned over the firm's 37-year history as part of implementing new approaches to infrastructure design that can withstand the test of time.Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION 6 PREFACE: Inspired by Land and Water 8 PART I: Land, Water, and Resilient Communities 14 PART II: Projects 28 Wenk Office Stormwater Gardens 32 Northside Park 34 Confluence Park 42 Shop Creek 52 Burgess Creek Promenade 60 The Blue Riverwalk 68 River North Park and Promenade 74 TAXI Mixed-Use Development 80 Lowry Parks and Open Space 90 Menomonee Valley Redevelopment 104 The River Mile 118 Grand River Corridor 126 Los Angeles River Revitalization 132 PART III: What We’ve Learned 140 AFTERWORD: Wenk Next 158 Working Water Glossary 162 Project Credits 170 Acknowledgments 184

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWith dozens of stunning photographs, this modern translation of a Classic text is a masterpiece of classical Chinese gardening.Ji Cheng's great work on garden design, the Yuan Ye or Craft of Gardens, was originally published around 1631 and is the earliest manual of landscape gardening in the Chinese tradition. This is the first complete English translation of Ji Cheng's seminal work. This Chinese gardening book is based on J Cheng's notes and experiences from his career as a garden designer, which he discusses at some length in his introduction> Since architecture is an integral part of the Chinese garden, much of the book is taken up with the design of different types of buildings and the integration of architecture with nature in the garden. Ji Cheng explains the religious and aesthetic principles underlying garden design and the appropriate emotional response to various effects. he then offers a down-to-earth series of instructions about the requirements of different types of sites, building layouts, architectural features, paving, the construction of artificial mountains, selection of rocks, and the use of natural scenery. This delightful book provides not only insights into Chinese gardening but also a unique perspective on Chinese culture and society in the late Ming dynasty. Full notes by the translator explain obscure points and introduce relevant aspects of Chinese culture, while an introduction by Maggie Keswick sets the book firmly in its historical context. Illustrations include not only Ji Cheng's original diagrams but also historical paintings and contemporary photographs of a number of outstanding gardens in the part of East China where Ji Cheng lived and worked.Trade Review"This book offers a view into a strange and delightful world with characteristics worth emulating." —The Atlantic"[Ji Cheng's] delightful "how-to-do-it" manual, published around 1631, is here put in historical context by Maggie Keswick in her foreword, while Alison Hardie provides an accurate and readable translation, a scholarly preface and a wealth of necessary endnotes based on the work of the modern Chinese editors." —Times Literary Supplement"Ji Cheng's book, beautifully translated and illustrated, gives a wonderful insight into the Chinese concept of what a garden should be and shows how, in the late Ming dynasty, the planning and ownership of a garden was a way of life. Alison Hardie's excellent notes lead you through this exquisite back door into the high culture of 17th century China." —The Garden: Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society"This delightful book provides not only insights into Chinese garden design but also a unique perspective on Chinese culture and society in late Ming times. Garden designers and historians alike can learn much from it." —Garden Design Journal

Book SynopsisTime is ticking. That's what it does. Or at least that's how we represent what we don't understand. For physics, time is a byproduct of so called space-time, elastic goo created at the very moment that something came from nothing; the moment eternity stopped and the universe began. For geology, time is 4.5 billion years of compression and catastrophe. For biology time is 3.5 billion years of diversification and now the urgency of the sixth extinction. For anthropology time is 150 thousand years since mitochondrial Eve walked out of the rift valley in Ethiopia. For historians, time begins with Herodotus (484 BC) and ends, or rather doesn't, with Fukuyama's The End of History. For architecture time is ruination. For landscape architecture time is ephemerality, entropy, and growth. For all of us time is running out.Table of ContentsContents: Editorial by Richard Weller & Tatum L. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is a book about ideal landscapes and Feng-Shui. Using evolutionary and anthropological approaches, Peking University professor Kongjian Yu - who holds a doctorate degree in Design from Harvard - explores the origin, structure, and meanings of Feng-Shui in juxtaposition to the ideal landscape models in Chinese culture. Using illustrative site observations and literature, Yu argues that Feng-Shui landscapes share similar structures with other Chinese ideal landscapes - the implications of which are deconstructed into terms of geography, anthropology, ecology, and philosophy. As a landscape architect and urbanist, Professor Yu respects the role of Feng-Shui in the making of places, yet still is in opposition to its superstitious nature. Well illustrated and poetically written, this book is a must-read for those who are interested in Feng-Shui, as well as those who care about their daily living environment - especially those who practice architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism.

Book SynopsisThis book traces the historic evolution of urban form, principles, and design; it serves as a compendium, or reference, of city design; and is a polemic about the necessity for the recovery of the city and a contemporary urban architecture. It begins with the planned cities of Greece and the Roman Empire from about 500 BC, through the late-medieval Bastides, the Ideal Renaissance cities, and Baroque new towns, to the urban planning strategies of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It covers anti-urban modernist architecture and the resulting disintegration of the city. It concludes with late-twentieth-century efforts to recover the city, a contemporary urban architecture, and urbanism’s potential contribution to the contemporary ecological crisis. The book is project oriented and extensively illustrated. It may be read graphically, textually, or both. As such, it falls into the long tradition of illustrated treatises in which theory is embedded in the projects, with only occasional assistance or clarification from the text. Architecture and urban design are physical arts, not verbal arts, and they are best understood from graphic representations.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Charles Bridgeman (c.1685-1738): A Landscape

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAn examination of the garden plans of eighteenth-century landscape architect Charles Bridgeman, shedding light on his artistic vision and contributions to English garden history. Charles Bridgeman was a popular and highly successful landscape architect in the first part of the eighteenth century. He was Royal Gardener to George I and George II, designing the gardens at Kensington Palace for them and working for many of the ruling Whig elite, including Sir Robert Walpole at Houghton Hall in Norfolk. His landscapes were audacious and monumental, but he is barely known outside the world of academic garden history; most of his gardens have disappeared, changed out of all recognition to chime with later tastes shaped by Lancelot Brown's vision of a more "natural" landscape, or buried under housing developments and golf courses; and there is little archaeological or written evidence of his work. This book aims to redress this injustice and rescue his legacy. It draws on the only significant body of evidence which survived him: an extensive but wildly heterogenous corpus of garden plans. Close examination of them reveals an artistic vision heavily influenced by the late seventeenth-century geometric garden but deeply rooted in the "genius of the place", and working methods that include a proto-business model which prefigures the gentleman improvers who followed him. The volume brings him from obscurity to demonstrate his skill as an artist, a manipulator of space on a grand scale and a consummate practitioner, a deserved member of the canon of famous and revered English landscape gardeners.Table of ContentsList of illustrations Acknowledgements List of abbreviations Introduction 1. Book SynopsisThis book traces cultural landscape as the manifestation of the state and national community under the Nazi regime, and how the Nazi era produced what could be referred to as a totalitarian cultural landscape. For the Nazi regime, cultural landscape was indeed a heritage resource, but it was much more than that: cultural landscape was the nation. The project of Nazi racial purification and cultural renewal demanded the physical reshaping and reconceptualization of the existing environment to create the so-called new Nazi cultural landscape. One of the most important components of this was a set of monumental sites thought to embody blood and soil beliefs through the harmonious synthesis of architecture and landscape. This special group of landscape-bound architectural complexes was interconnected by the new autobahn highway system, itself thought to be a monumental work embedded in nature. Behind this intentionally aestheticized view of the nation as cultural landscape lay the all-pervasive system of deception and violence that characterized the emerging totalitarian state. This is the first historical study to consider the importance of these monumental sites together with the autobahn as evidence of key Nazi cultural and geographic strategies during the pre-war years. This book concludes by examining racial and nationalistic themes underlying cultural landscape concepts today, against this historic background.Trade Review"The formal power of buildings in Nazi Germany has tended to focus historical attention upon the architecture at the expense of understanding the larger sites in which they were located. In this fascinating account, Haney forensically examines a range of ‘cultural landscapes’ each conceived to express an aspect of Nazi mythology."Professor Murray Fraser, The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London"This meticulously researched book alerts us to the geopolitical underpinnings of the National Socialist cultural landscape. Never one to bore his audience, David Haney will transform the way in which historians and general readers understand Nazi architectural production."Associate Professor Ian Klinke, School of Geography and the Environment, University of OxfordTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisWay Beyond Bigness is a design-research project that studies the Mekong, Mississippi and Rhine river basins, with particular focus on multi-scaled, water-based infrastructural transformation. The book proposes a simple, adaptive framework that utilises a three-part, integrative design-research methodology, structured as: Appreciate + Analyze, Speculate + Synthesize, and Collaborate + Catalyze. To do such, Way Beyond Bigness realigns watersheds and architecture across multiple: scales (site to river basin), disciplines (ecologists to economists), narratives (hyperbolic to pragmatic), and venues (academic to professional). The research critiques and recasts Oxford Dictionary's two very different definitions for a 'watershed': 1) "An area or ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers, basins, or seas" and 2) "An event or period marking a turning point in a situation in a course of action or state of affairs" and its two very different definitions for 'architecture': 1) "The art or practice of designing and constructing buildings" and 2) "the complex or carefully designed structure of something." The book highlights the author's comprehensive work of over more than a decade, including in depth field research across the Mekong, Mississippi and Rhine, along with a diverse body of academic and professional collaborations, ranging from the speculative to the community-based.Table of ContentsForeword (Margarita Jover) / 8 Acknowledgements / 12 Introduction Bigness, Katrina, Conflict, Hybridity & Audience / 18 Backstory “from Times Beach…” / 32 Definintions Watershed, Architecture & Way Beyond Bigness / 44 Appreciate + Analyze [A+A] / 53 Description (Anthony Acciavatti) / 55 Why the Mississippi, Mekong, & Rhine? / 62 Who Manages the River Basins? / 66 Mississippi, Mekong, and Rhine River Basin Atlas / 84 (with Jess Vanecek, Paul Wu, Chenyu Zhang) Mississippi River Basin & the World / 86 Missouri River Basin / 96 Erasure (Kees Lokman) / 121 Scar (Meghan Kirkwood) / 132 Upper Mississippi, Ohio, & Tennessee River Basins / 144 Reconnection (Chuck Theiling) / 169 Depth (Jesse Vogler) / 183 Between (Jennifer Colten) / 196 Above (with Jess Vanecek) / 199 Lower Mississippi & Arkansas-White-Red River Basins / 202 Splitting (Forbes Lipschitz & Justine Holzman) / 227 Shifting (Alex Kolker) / 239 Mekong River Basin & the World / 250 Development (Dorothy Tang) / 260 Balance (Palakorn Chanbanyong & Simon Krohn) / 344 Adapt (Shelby Elizabeth Doyle) / 355 Monitor (Duong Van Ni) / 366 Rhine River Basin & the World / 378 Transform (Han Meyer) / 388 Revive (Robbert de Koning & Dale Morris) / 451 Speculate + Synthesize [S+S] /469 Context (Ian Caine) / 471 from the Big Six to the Birds Foot / 487 (with Jonathan Stitelman, Allison Méndez, L. Book SynopsisUrban environments (including built, natural, and social environments) crucially impact children's physical and psychological health, particularly in cities. Now children's mentality and safety, and the freedom of travelling and playing have raised concerns in society. In this issue, trans-disciplinary discussions between scholars and practitioners in landscape architecture and environmental psychology, environmental behaviours, human engineering, public health, etc., as well as city managers, are encouraged to explore the ways to improve urban environments for children's outdoor activities. With such a multi-disciplinary coverage, this issue aims to update landscape architects' theoretical and methodological approaches to issues of children and urban environments, with a deeper understanding of their disciplinary competences, limitations, and challenges thus to find out their irreplaceable role in guaranteeing children's well-beings.

Book SynopsisMirei Shigemori had a major impact on the development of Japanese landscape architecture in the twentieth century. Active from the 1920s, he founded the Kyoto Garden Society in 1932. In 1939 he designed his own first masterpiece, the garden at the main hall of the Tôfuku-ji temple. From then on he designed 240 gardens all over Japan until his death in 1975; amongst the most famous are the Tenrai-an tea garden (1969) and the Matsuo Taisha garden (1975). The main characteristic of his gardens is that they respect tradition and, at the same time, depart from conventional paradigms by opening up to the influence of Western modernism with its own language. The first part of the book covers Shigemori’s life and factors that influenced his work. The second part contains a detailed illustration of 17 gardens. The book is published as a new and revised edition.

A landscape gardener of international renown he was in search of a challenge - a new climate, a new way of gardening and a new way of life. This is his account of gardening his way round Provence, and in particular, of attempting to restore the secret garden of M-nerbes. Situated high on the plains of the Luberon region, M-nerbes is a famously beautiful village - but this garden had long been forgotten. It trailed down over seven levels, thick with brambles and hornets'' nests, almond blossom and ancient fig trees. It was an archetypal Proven-al garden and for one whole year it dominated Alex Dingwall-Main''s life. From distant dreams came growth and disasters, but ultimately, the garden is reclaimed. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Art and Philosophy of the Garden offers the first authoritative and comprehensive philosophical discussion of the aesthetics of gardens. Philosopher David Fenner and horticulturist Ethan Fenner address such questions as: what is a garden? Are some gardens works of art? What does it mean to appreciate gardens aesthetically? Given that gardens are always changing in a variety of ways, how is it possible to compare, evaluate, or find meaning in them? How can we interpret gardens? How do we value gardens and gardening? While grounded in Western thought, Fenner and Fenner bring to bear global ideas and examples of gardens and gardening techniques.Inspired by a surge of philosophical interest in gardening, Fenner and Fenner argue that some gardens are indeed works of art. They explore how we might understand the aesthetic properties of gardens, and focus on what it means to read the formal aspects of gardens -- what the authors call garden form -- as a basis for interpreting a garden. Book SynopsisSince its founding in 1898, the Art Commission of the City of New York (ACNY) has served as the city's aesthetic gatekeeper, evaluating all works of art intended for display on city property. And over the years, the commission's domain has expanded dramatically to include everything from parks and courthouses to trash cans and sidewalks. In ThePolitics of Urban Beauty, Michele H. Bogart argues that this unprecedented authority has made the commission host to some complex negotiationsinvolving artists, architects, business leaders, activists, and politiciansabout not only the role of art in urban design, but also the shape and meaning of the city and its public spaces.A former vice president of the ACNY, Bogart tells its story here from an insider's perspective, tracing the commission's history from its origins as an outgrowth of progressive reform to its role in New York's reconstruction after 9/11. Book SynopsisA momentous history of the 1930s émigré generation, and how they reshaped BritainAs the horrors of fascism ran riot through Europe in the 1930s, tens of thousands of central Europeans, most of them Jewish and many of them artists, fled their countries seeking sanctuary in an imperial island at the edge of the continent. The world they found when they reached these shores damp, grey and parochial was a far cry from the modernity and dynamism of Weimar Berlin, Red Vienna or modernist Prague, but it was safe, and it became home. Yet the émigrés had not arrived alone: they brought with them new and radical ideas, and as they began to rebuild their lives and livelihoods, they transformed the face of Britain forever. In The Alienation Effect, the historian Owen Hatherley leads us into the technicolour world of this exiled generation of artists and intellects, from celebrated figures like Erno Goldfinger to forgotten luminaries like Ruth Glass. This book (and the exhibition it accompanies) is the first comprehensive survey of the artist's need to roam and the work that emerges from this need. Wanderlust presents the work of under-recognized yet pioneering artists alongside their well-known counterparts, and represents works that vary in process, with some artists working as solitary figures implanting themselves physically on the landscape while others perform and create movements in a collaborative manner or in public. Many of the earlier works use what were at the time nontraditional methods of art making. In Trail Markers (1969), for example, Nancy Holt spent time in the English countryside, where she documented the painted orange trail markers she found dotting the landscape. Vito

Book SynopsisExplores the aftermath of 9/11 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Describes how the local community remembered the event and how it was affected by national media attention. Follows the creation of the national memorial built at the site to honor those aboard Flight 93.Trade Review“Thoughtful and exceptionally well-written.”—Kenneth E. Foote Pennsylvania Heritage“Thompson includes intimate and emotional details of individuals with diverse, and sometimes opposing, perspectives. This, along with Thompson’s skill as a writer, results in engaging literary quality. This significant strength allows Thompson to represent opposing opinions—about the politics raised by various memorialization activities, for instance—without flattening the narrative into a simple debate between local and national interests, partisan politics, or elite and unsophisticated aesthetics.”—Sarah Dziedzic The Public Historian“Thompson describes how heroic columns and figures for the final Memorial Plaza were rejected in favor of abstract minimalism, providing insight into human psychology, public controversy, theory of memory, the role of media, and national politics. Should be widely read by the public, scholars, and professionals for its scholarship and sensitive insights into a current issue. Summing Up: Essential.”—B. Osborne Choice“Thompson raises and thoughtfully examines some of the central questions about public memory—and he does so with an example that has been relatively neglected, even seventeen years after the disaster. Therefore, this book makes an engaging and fresh contribution to ongoing discussions of memorialization, in general, as well as with specific regard to the events of September 11th.”—Carolyn Kitch H-Penn“Can serve as a historic overview of the process of building such a monument, with some useful orientation about the site and area for people who choose to visit the memorial.”—Al Holliday Pennsylvania Magazine“Weaving factual details with oral histories, Thompson traces the commemoration of United Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, from the bluntly patriotic temporary memorial erected on the site immediately following the crash of the hijacked plane on 9/11 to the sober minimalism of the Flight 93 National Memorial, dedicated in 2011. Engaging, informative, and heartfelt, From Memory to Memorial especially explores how, and why, contemporary Americans make mass tragedies memorable in public space.”—Erika Doss, author of Memorial Mania“Bill Thompson’s thorough analysis of the oral histories surrounding the downing of United Flight 93 in Somerset County results in a poignant, compelling, and engrossing account that answers the question: what happens next in an ordinary place where nothing will ever be quite normal again?”—Frederick R. Steiner, coauthor of Human Ecology: How Nature and Culture Shape Our World“A smart and moving account of the tragedy of Flight 93 and its effect on the families, the community of Shanksville, and our collective memories of 9/11.
