Urim Publications Tiferet Yisrael Volume 1: Translation and
Book SynopsisThe famed Maharal of Prague, a 16th-century mystic, is known for the legend of the Golem, but his Torah scholarship has remained a closed book to English speakers for far too long. While several attempts have been made to translate or abridge the Maharal’s Torah, the complexity of his thought has defied standard translation methodologies. This edition of the Tiferet Yisrael (the Splendor of Israel) seeks to present the Maharal’s thought in all its majesty and to enable beginners and scholars alike to grasp the overall structure of the Maharal’s concepts through the addition of innovative summaries and graphical aids. In the work, the Maharal contemplates questions of Jewish life, such as How can there be ritually observant Jews who behave immorally? What is the reason for performing Mitzvot (commandments)? Is there any relevance or meaning to performing Mitzvot if one doesn’t understand God’s reasons for commanding them? What is the path to self-fulfillment? The translation is lucid and faithful, with in-line comments to guide the reader in exploring the Maharal’s depths.Trade Review"One of the major novel approaches that Rabbi Widmonte has taken is to create a method of synthesizing the Maharal's thought and summarizing them, utilizing summaries and graphics devices" Rabbi Avraham Tanzer"Maharal's thought to the English reading public is a great service that will provide the intelligent and interested reader a window into the thought of this great thinker." Rabbi Mosheh Lichtenstein"Sets out very clearly the flow of the Maharal's ideas, as well as how they connect to the Maharal's broader philosophy and ideas. The unique combination of text and diagrams . . . illuminates Tiferet Yisrael in a comprehensive and excellent manner." Rabbi Warren Goldstein"What is unique in your work is that you have succeeded in clarifying the words of the Maharal in a manner that benefits everyone." Rabbi Yehoshua Hartman"This is a clear and lucid Hebrew edition with English translation of the Maharal of Prague's Tiferet Yisrael (the Splendor of Israel) intended for the English reading public... In addition to providing a much-needed translation Widmonte's unique approach to presenting this text enables the English reader to better appreciate the Maharal's depth of thought and the important place his work occupies within the Rabbinic corpus. Also included is a glossary, a general index, name index, and an index of sources. Recommended." David B Levy, AJL Reviews

Book SynopsisIndie Book Awards Winner A deeply affirming exploration of the unknown—with meditations and exercises for transforming the fear and uncertainty of ‘not knowing’ into a sense of openness, curiosity, and bravery For most of us, the unknown is both friend and foe. At times, it can be a source of paralyzing fear and uncertainty. At other times, it can be a starting point for transformation, creativity, and growth. The unknown is a deep current that runs throughout all religions and mystical traditions, plays an important role in contemporary psychotheraputic thought and practice, and is essential to personal growth and healing. In The Wisdom of Not Knowing, psychotherapist Estelle Frankel shows us that our psychological, emotional, and spiritual health is radically influenced by how comfortable we are with navigating the unknown and uncertain dimensions of our lives. Drawing on insights from Kabbalah, depth psychology, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and ancient myth, Frankel explores how we can grow our souls by tapping into the wisdom of not knowing. She also includes case studies of individuals who have grappled with fears of the unknown and, as a result, come out wiser, stronger, and more resilient. Each chapter includes experiential exercises and meditations for befriending the unknown, conveying how embracing a state of "not knowing" is the key to gaining new knowledge, learning to bear uncertainty, and enjoying a healthy sense of adventure and curiosity.

Liverpool University Press Founder of Hasidism: A Quest for the Historical
Book SynopsisThe Ba'al Shem Tov is an elusive subject for historians because documentary evidence about his life is scanty and equivocal. Until now, much of what was known about him was based on stories compiled more than a generation after his death, many of which serve more to mythologize him than to describe him. The portrait Moshe Rosman provides is drawn from life instead of from myth. Based on innovative critical analysis of familiar and previously unexplored archival sources, and concentrating on accounts that can be attributed to the Besht or to contemporary eyewitnesses, this book goes further than any previous work in uncovering the historical Ba'al Shem Tov. Additionally, documents in Polish and Hebrew discovered by Professor Rosman during his research for the book enable him to give the first detailed description of the cultural, social, economic, and political context of the Besht's life. Founder of Hasidism supplies the history behind the legend. It presents the best, most convincing description that can be drawn from the existing documentary evidence, changing our understanding of the Besht and with it the master-narrative of hasidism.A substantial new introduction considers what has changed in the study of Hasidism since the influential first edition was published, these changes being in part due to the effect of the book. New approaches, new sources, and new interpretations have been introduced, and these are reviewed and critically assessed. Criticisms of the original edition are answered and key issues reconsidered, including the authenticity of the various versions of the Holy Epistle; the ways in which Jacob Joseph of Polonne's books can be utilized as historical sources; and the relationship to history of the stories about the Ba'al Shem Tov in the hagiographical collection Shivhei Ha-Besht.Trade Review'The only scholarly book, in any language, that deals with the figure of the Besht in a detailed, profound, and very documented manner. Dr Rosman has mapped the background of the life and activity of the Besht, using unknown material, penetrating analysis, and a broader perspective regarding Jewish history in Poland ... A very remarkable achievement.'- Moshe Idel, Hebrew University of Jerusalem'The subject is crucial; the approach is bold and brilliantly chosen. The result is a persuasive revision of a fundamental chapter in the Jewish experience.'- Gershon Hundert, McGill UniversityFROM REVIEWS OF THE HARDBACK EDITION:'In this quest for the historical Ba'al Shem Tov, Mr Rosman has brilliantly re-created a chapter of this alien world of our ancestors.'- David Biale, Forward'A model of sober scholarship that combines detective work and careful reasoning in quest of the man behind centuries of accumulated legends. Thanks to Rosman's careful historical analysis, we can now attach a recognizable biography to Israel ben Eliezer Miedzydoz and situate the man within his times.'- Jewish Book World'Rosman's painstakingly lucid investigation of the movement's putative founder ultimately and ironically deepens the movement's mystery ... Rosman's greatest innovation is his use of the kinds of archival materials - tax rolls, land registers, communal ordinances, and the like - usually overlooked by historians of theology. Through careful examination of the extant evidence, and a thorough investigation of the precise contours of the time and place of Besht's life and milieu, he arrives at the surprising, but compelling conclusion that the Besht, rather than being the rebel he is universally thought of, was in fact an established member of this community in Medzhibozh.'- Jerusalem ReportTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Note to Reader Introduction Part 1: Context 1 Ba'al Shem Tov 2 Hasidism before Hasidism 3 A Country in Decline? 4 Miedzboz: A Place in Time and Space 5 The Contentions of Life Part 2: Texts 6 The Holy Epistle 7 More Besht Correspondence 8 Testimonies 9 Life Stories 10 Light from the Archives Part 3: Images 11 A Person of his Time 12 From the Historical Besht to the Usable Besht: The Image of the Ba'al Shem Tov in Early Habad Afterword Notes Bibliography Index

University of Pennsylvania Press Living with the Law: Gender and Community Among
Book SynopsisLiving with the Law explores the marital disputes of Jews in medieval Islamic Egypt (1000–1250), relating medieval gossip, marital woes, and the voices of men and women of a world long gone. Probing the rich documents of the Cairo Geniza, a unique repository of discarded paper discovered in a Cairo synagogue, the book recovers the life stories of Jewish women and men working through their marital problems at home, with their families, in the streets of old Cairo, and in Jewish and Muslim courts. Despite a voluminous literature on Jewish law, the everyday practice of Jewish courts has only recently begun to be investigated systematically. The experiences of those at a legal, social, and cultural disadvantage allow us to go beyond the image propagated by legal institutions and offer a view “from below” of Jewish communal life and Jewish law as it was lived. Examining the interactions between gender and law in medieval Jewish communities under Islamic rule, Oded Zinger considers how women experienced Jewish courts and the pressure they faced to relinquish their monetary rights. The tactics with which women countered this pressure—ranging from exploiting family ties to appealing to Muslim courts—expose the complex relationship between individual agency, gendered expectations, and communal authority. Zinger concludes that, more than money, education, or lineage, it was the maintenance of a supportive network of social relations with men that protected women at different stages of their lives.

Rowman & Littlefield Your Guide to the Jewish Holidays
Book SynopsisRecent years have seen an increased interest in Jewish life, its culture, and its celebrations. There are many new students of Judaism, often potential converts or members of interfaith families who are seeking to learn more about the religion and its rituals. Unfortunately, many of the existing texts that examine the Jewish holidays are written in a dry, unexciting way, making it difficult for the reader to retain much information. For those seeking to learn more about Jewish celebrations, Cantor Matt Axelrod has written Your Guide to the Jewish Holidays: From Shofar to Seder. Intended for the reader who has no prior knowledge about the Jewish holidays as well as the reader who knows the basics about the holidays but wants to understand the holidays on a deeper level, Axelrod's book takes a humorous, light-hearted look at the 11 most important Jewish holidays. Instead of simply explaining that Jews are obligated to observe in a certain way because of a biblical text, Axelrod shows wheTrade ReviewThe book opens with the familiar but still funny line some Jews use to describe their holidays: “They tried to kill us. We won. Let’s eat.” Happily, this book takes things further and does so in highly readable manner. All the major holidays are covered, as well as some of the lesser ones, including Tishah-b’Ab, a day that commemorates the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. Ironically (or not), it is also the day the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492. Because the book is written without affectation, those new to the holidays will find it a way to understand both the meaning and the observance of Judaism’s special days. The text is full of interesting facts, from the origin of the Kol Nidre service to the story behind gift giving at Hanukkah and the derivation of Moses’ name. And, appropriately, each holiday gets a section, called “Let’s Eat,” that details the foods associated with the day (or in the case of Yom Kippur, how to fast). A good starting point for both Jews and their non-Jewish friends who want to know more. * Booklist *If you want to know the story behind the Jewish a cappella group the Maccabeats’ latest video, look to this book. If you are one of a burgeoning number of interfaith families, this guide will help you. Axelrod (cantor, Congregation Beth Israel, Scotch Plains, NJ; Surviving Your Bar/Bat Mitzvah) has a facility for making the shofar and the seder accessible to all. Without compromising their theological importance, he sets the 11 most important Jewish holidays in their historical and ritual contexts, adding wit and a bit of whimsy. In explicating a holiday, he titles sections with such headers as 'The Back Story,' 'Let’s Eat,' and 'The Bottom Line.' Certain celebrations require additional headings such as 'Come on Baby, Light My Fire.' There are 'Tips for Parents' and 'In Depth' segments throughout. He describes the holidays also through real-life applications and scenarios such as alternatives to camping in a tent for seven days during Sukkot. The three appendixes—a 'Quick Guide to the Holidays,' a Jewish calendar, and a glossary—offer great value on their own. VERDICT. . . This is an excellent choice for readers new to Jewish holidays and history and anyone wishing to incorporate these meaningful celebrations into their own lives. * Library Journal *Table of ContentsTable of Contents Acknowledgments Introduction 1. The University of Chicago Press Cultural Disjunctions
Book SynopsisThe identity of contemporary Jews is multifaceted, no longer necessarily defined by an observance of the Torah and God's commandments. Indeed, the Jews of modernity are no longer exclusively Jewish. They are affiliated with a host of complementary and sometimes clashing communitiesvocational, professional, political, and culturalwhose interests may not coincide with that of the community of their birth and inherited culture. In Cultural Disjunctions, Paul Mendes-Flohr explores the possibility of a spiritually and intellectually engaged cosmopolitan Jewish identity for our time. Reflecting on the need to participate in the spiritual life of Judaism so that it enables multiple relations beyond its borders and allows one to balance Jewish commitment with a genuine obligation to the universal, Mendes-Flohr lays out what this delicate balance can look like for contemporary Jews, both in Israel and in diasporic communities worldwide. Cultural Disjunctions walks us through the labyrinth of twTrade Review"In this provocative and important work, Mendes-Flohr argues for the significance of a spiritually and intellectually robust conception of a post-traditional Jewish identity. Though still rooted in the transcendental ontology of its tradition, Mendes-Flohr’s Judaism is one in a perpetual state of interpretation, always alert and open to the contributions of 'the Other,' even if their origins are from non-Jewish sources. In this way, Judaism can emerge fortified from the antinomies of modernity, seeking solace neither in the particularism of an ethnic nationalism nor in the jettisoning of faith in its entirety. This book should be required reading for students and scholars alike. . . . Highly recommended." * Choice *“Cultural Disjunctions preserves the transcendent, divine, legacy of Judaism while ushering it into the modern world. The book argues for a version of Jewish identity which espouses a radical cosmopolitanism, holds fast to the endless interpretability of Jewish religious texts, makes the case for a way of being Jewish which would take its place among the multiple identities and forms of community offered by modernity, but would do so without sacrificing its sense of a unique spiritual calling grounded in revelation. This is an important book by one of our foremost Jewish scholars and thinkers.” * Jacqueline Rose, Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities, London *“In Mendes-Flohr’s enchanted world of enlightened Jewish letters, the neo-Kantian Hermann Cohen consorts with the popular Talmudist Adin Steinsaltz, and the baptized Heine writes odes to the Sabbath cholent. The humanistic vision of a Judaism open and welcoming to kultur in all its forms is by turns moving and bracing—and welcoming to critique as well as renewal.” * Noah Feldman, Harvard Law School *"Replete with metaphors from literature, philosophy, and poetry, Mendes-Flohr applies reflections from important thinkers of the past to a consideration of post-traditional Jewish identities." * Reading Religion *Table of ContentsIntroduction: Discontinuous Identities, Dialectical Imponderables 1. Oxford University Press Inc Once We Were Slaves
Book SynopsisOnce We Were Slaves tells the story of a brother and sister who were born enslaved Christians in Barbados yet ended up among the wealthiest white Jews in New York. Tracing the siblings' extraordinary journey throughout the Atlantic world, Leibman examines artifacts they left behind, family heirlooms, and official documents to show how this transformation was possible. Though their affluence was exceptional, their story mirrors that of the largely forgottenpopulation of mixed African and Jewish ancestry that constituted as much as ten percent of the Jewish communities in the New World and challenges current notions regarding Jews and race in early America.Trade ReviewOnce We Were Slaves most definitely "works." It is a book one needs to dive into, step back from, and then reread as the story of this far-flung multiracial family begins to emerge ... Leibman has done a remarkable job of evoking time and place in a vast Atlantic world in which identities were made and remade ... Her discussion of pandemics has an eerily contemporary ring as she reminds us that they are nothing new -- and neither are our responses to them. * Julie Winch, The Civil War Book Review *This book is a must read for both academic historians and for those who simply love a good story. * Jessica V. Book SynopsisOrthodox Jewish women are increasingly seeking new ways to express themselves religiously, and important changes have occurred in consequence in their self-definition and the part they play in the religious life of their communities. Drawing on surveys and interviews across different Orthodox groups in London, as well as on the author’s own experience of active participation over many years, this is a thoroughly researched study that analyses its findings in the context of related developments in Israel and the USA. Sympathetic attention is given to women’s creativity and sophistication as they struggle to develop new modes of expression that will let their voices be heard; at the same time, the inevitable points of conflict with the male-dominated religious establishment are examined and explained. There is a focus, too, on the impact of innovations in ritual: these include not only the creation of women-only spaces and women’s participation in public practices traditionally reserved for men, but also new personal practices often acquired on study visits to Israel which are replacing traditions learned from family members. This is a much-needed study of how new norms of lived religion have emerged in London, influenced by both the rise of feminism and the backlash against it, and also by women’s new understanding of their religious roles.Trade Review'Lindsey Taylor-Guthartz's in-depth study of the religious experience of Orthodox women raises questions for the rabbinic establishment... an important new book.'Simon Rocker, The Jewish Chronicle'Taylor-Guthartz's precise academic writing, interwoven with her own personal knowledge and experience of the community, gives the women represented here agency and authority, exemplifying how traditional groups and practices do not exist at odds with the modern world, or even in parallel, but rather as an integral part of it, adding rich diversity and colour to the pattern of Jewish life today. This is a timely and important treatise, reflecting modern feminist values and shining a light on a previously unexamined segment of the community.'Noa Gendler, Jewish Renaissance'Challenge and Conformity opens up for our understanding a subject of immense importance to Judaism and the Jewish community. The religious lives of Orthodox women is a topic that has previously attracted little research. Taylor-Guthartz approaches it with academic skill and real empathy for the women she interviews and their communities. We learn of the great variety of women’s beliefs, customs and practices that are spread across the Orthodox Jewish world and, through Taylor-Guthartz’s eyes, we gain a greater understanding and appreciation of Jewish life that might otherwise have remained hidden.'Neville Teller, The Jerusalem Post‘Challenge and Conformity serves as a rich chronicle of Orthodox British womanhood and the challenge of creating uniquely female Jewish spaces. It is well rooted in history, community context, and robust ethnographic data and will be helpful to bridge the lacuna on British scholarship of religious practices of Jewish women.’ Ilana C. Cambridge University Press The Theology of the Books of Haggai and Zechariah
Book SynopsisTucked away at the end of the Minor Prophets, the Books of Haggai and Zechariah offer messages of challenge and hope to residents of the small district of Yehud in the Persian Empire in the generations after the return from Babylonian exile. In this volume, Robert Foster focuses on the distinct theological message of each book. The Book of Haggai uses Israel''s foundational event - God''s salvation of Israel from Egypt - to exhort the people to finish building the Second Temple. The Book of Zechariah argues that the hopes the people had in the prophet Zechariah''s days did not come true because the people failed to keep God''s long-standing demand for justice, though hope still lies in the future because of God''s character. Each chapter in this book closes with a substantive reflection of the ethics of the major sections of the Books of Haggai and Zechariah and their implications for contemporary readers.Trade Review'Foster majors on these minor prophets, often ignored as a theological resource for contemporary communities of faith. His accessible interpretations arise from careful exegesis rooted in the texts' original contexts. Book SynopsisThe first history of Jews in the nineteenth-century transatlantic diamond industry, A Brilliant Commodity shows how Jews became key players in the trade from its earliest days-from South Africa to Amsterdam and London to New York-to its place as a lucrative commodity in the global economy.Trade ReviewThe author's scholarship is exceptional, the writing is clear and concise, and the book is an essential account of that tumultuous time in history. * Russell Shor, Journal of Gemmology *A product of deep research, this admirable book illuminates the circuits of people, commodities, and capital in the diamond trade. In tracing Jewish enterprise and expertise through networks that encompass the Cape, London, Amsterdam, and New York, Coenen Snyder provides a convincing study of material culture set in the dynamic contexts of societies old and new. * Saul Dubow, Cambridge University *If diamonds, as De Beers would have us believe, are forever, the full story of the modern diamond trade has slipped from memory. Saskia Coenen Snyder reminds us of the central and multi-faceted role of Jews on three continents in transforming rough-hewn stones from the mines of Kimberley to the brilliant jewels sold to eager customers in the United States. This is transnational history at its best, revealing the global networks that made the diamond trade possible, teaching us about how diamonds reshaped local economies and everyday lives, and illuminating the lasting cultural impact of the relationship between Jews and diamonds. * Adam D. Mendelsohn, author of Jewish Soldiers in the Civil War: The Union Army *Ever wonder how and why the magic words 'I do' are coupled with a diamond ring? If so, this book is for you. Sweeping, vivid, and resonant, Saskia Coenen Snyder's account of the global traffic in diamonds encompasses economics and etiquette, diamond mines and curb-side markets, intimate courtship rituals and public displays of affluence. A Brilliant Commodity is a triumph of the historical imagination. * Jenna Weissman Joselit, author of A Perfect Fit: Clothes, Character, and The Promise of America *This intriguing book is a model of transnational Jewish economic history. Assorted histories—imperial, Jewish, economic, and labor—converge in Coenen Snyder's fascinating account of how diamonds became a niche dominated by Jews in the world of luxury goods. This comprehensive but comprehensible study takes the reader from the minefields of Africa to the exchange floors of London to the 'Jewish factories' of Amsterdam to the retail storefronts of New York City as it brings to life the enterprising people who made diamonds a ubiquitous luxury by the twenty-first century. * Rebecca Kobrin, Columbia University *Table of ContentsPreface Introduction: Clarity, Cut, Carat, and Color Chapter 1: "Like Dewdrops in the Waving Grass": Diamonds in South Africa Chapter 2: An Empire Made Portable: London Chapter 3: "As Long As It Sparkles!": Amsterdam Chapter 4: "Luxuries Have Now Become Necessities": New York Chapter 5: Jews and Diamonds in the Public Imagination Conclusion Acknowledgments Notes Bibliography Index

Oxford University Press The Dead Sea Scrolls
Book SynopsisSince their discovery in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls have become an icon in popular culture that transcends their status as ancient Jewish manuscripts. Everyone has heard of the Scrolls, but amidst the conspiracies, the politics, and the sensational claims, it can be difficult to separate the myths from the reality. In this Very Short introductions, Timothy Lim discusses the cultural significance of the finds, and the religious, political and legal controversies during the seventy years of study since the discovery. He also looks at the contribution the Scrolls have made to our understanding of the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible, and the origins of early Christianity. Exploring the most recent scholarly discussions on the archaeology of Khirbet Qumran, and the study of the biblical texts, the canon, and the history of the Second Temple Period, he considers what the scrolls reveal about sectarianism in early Judaism. Was the archaeological site of Qumran a centre of monastic life, a fortress, a villa, or a pottery factory? Why were some of their biblical texts so different from the ones that we read today? Did they have ''a Bible''? Who were the Essenes and why did they think that humanity is to be divided between ''the sons of light'' and those in darkness? And, finally, do the Scrolls reflect the teachings of the earliest followers of Jesus? Brandeis University Press Dirshuni – Contemporary Women′s Midrash
Book SynopsisA unique compilation of contemporary women’s midrashim. Dirshuni: Contemporary Women’s Midrash, is the first-ever English edition of a historic collection of midrashim composed by Israeli women, which has been long-anticipated by multiple American audiences, including synagogues, rabbinical seminaries, adult learning programs, Jewish educators, and scholars of gender and religion. Using the classical forms developed by the ancient rabbis, the contributors express their religious and moral thought and experience through innovative interpretations of scripture. The women writers, from all denominations and beyond, of all political stripes and ethnic backgrounds, contribute their Torah to fill the missing half of the sacred Jewish bookshelf. This book reflects dramatic changes in the agency of women in the world of religious writings. The volume features a comprehensive introduction to Midrash for the uninitiated reader by the distinguished scholar Tamar Kadari and extensive annotation and commentary by Tamar Biala. Trade Review"Dirshuni is a step forward; it carves out a place for contemporary women to see themselves in the sacred texts. It focuses on the courage, the heartbreak, and the fight of biblical women — and it brings them to life. ... What would Judaism look like if women had been reading, studying, interpreting, and commenting on our sacred texts all this time? Dirshuni gives us a glimpse of that, and the view is spectacular." * Jewish Book Council *"Biala’s anthology together puts the writers in conversation across time. “Dirshuni” (Amos 5: 4) means “seek me” and this book fulfills its title’s promise." * Association of Jewish Libraries *"Jerusalem-based author and teacher Tamar Biala birthed a contemporary oeuvre of midrashim that could legitimately stand alongside those of the ancient rabbis in their canon of Midrash. With a capital M. Biala... collected contemporary midrashim written by a group of exceptional Israeli women. Curated in anthology form, unadorned, these luminous pieces addressed the needs and truths of the female half of the world....Not only is the world of Dirshuni now available to English-language readers, but there is a new twist: Biala has added framing and commentaries to each piece." * Jerusalem Post *"Dirshuni is the long-anticipated English edition of a collection of midrash composed by Israeli women. Scholars will relish the book’s nuances, it is the less experienced Torah student who will learn most from this wealth of new insights into the tradition." * Moment Magazine *“Dirshuni is powerful, playful, joyful and sometimes painful. Its words and insights will be making many ‘guest appearances’ in my sermons and teaching in the coming year. . . . Get a copy of Dirshuni. As we begin a new cycle of Torah for the year, it should be at your side—for your own learning and teaching. It will yield numerous insights. With a solemn caveat: Don’t lend it out. You might never see it again.” * Religion News Service *“. . . . Anyone interested in midrash or contemporary Israeli women’s thought should find this work intriguing and stimulating.” * The Reporter *“I hope that the writings in this collection will be part of our conversation, and that we will be better able to ‘listen to her voice.’” * The Jewish News of Northern California *“As the first anthology of Midrashim written by women in English, Dirshuni offers valuable insights into midrashic feminist interpretation. . . . Biala’s commentary. . . . sparks further questions and insights. Her remarks are a testament to the effort, thought, consideration, and time that not only went into writing the commentary, but also into the midrashim themselves.” * Reading Religion *“This text is a gift—a profound exploration of both ancient text and the modern world all through the lives of women and their experiences. . . . This volume should be required reading.” * CCAR Journal *“How thrilling to have this rich collection of women’s midrashim in our hands. The melding of scholarship, deep insight, and creativity in this brilliantly edited volume yields fresh new feminist perspectives on classical Jewish tradition. We are truly blessed to have this resource for understanding biblical texts and rabbinic commentaries.” -- Marcia Falk, author of Night of Beginnings: A Passover Haggadah“Opinions regarding the practical conclusions to be drawn from the innovative readings of sacred history offered here will no doubt differ widely, ranging from demand for inclusion in the canon to dismissal as heresy. Either way, the jolt that these feminist midrashim present to traditional sensibilities, highlighting and imaginatively amplifying upon the lacunae of distinctly male perspectives, will leave readers with much food for thought.” -- Tamar Ross, author of Expanding the Palace of Torah: Orthodoxy and Feminism“Those familiar with feminist midrash primarily in the U.S. context will be surprised and delighted with the richness, range, and erudition of this collection by Israeli women. The conversations with and reworkings of traditional texts are consistently thought-provoking, sometimes brilliant, and always carefully explained. This is an exciting addition to the body of feminist commentary available in English.” -- Judith Plaskow, author of Standing Again at Sinai: Judaism from a Feminist Perspective“Part classical midrash, short story, poetry and social commentary, these midrashim are a new genre, a treasure to cherish. These voices and texts are bound to leave each student moved and changed.” -- Rabbi Avi Killip, Hadar"A long-overdue expansion of the sacred Jewish library following centuries of patriarchal hegemony, exclusion and injustice. The texts’ profound insights result from the encounter between the authors' lived experience, their creativity, and Torah study. This volume belongs in every Jewish library, in our homes, our schools, and our synagogues." -- Rabbi J. Rolando Matalon, Congregation B'nai Jeshurun, NYC"In its 2 slim Hebrew volumes, Dirshuni changed the study of Rabbinic midrash for those fortunate enough to grasp the brilliance, expert knowledge and exquisite language that pays homage to while shattering traditional midrash. Now the English reader has the opportunity to study these masterpieces and to find their own voice in our tradition." -- Rabbanit Devorah Zlochower, Yeshivat MaharatTable of ContentsThe Enchanted World of Midrash and its Unexpected Return in Recent Generations – Tamar KadariThe Road to Women’s Midrash – Tamar Biala Translators’ NotesPart I: Creation of the WorldMiscarriage and Creation – Tamar BialaThis One Will Be Called Woman – Miri WestreichAnd Your Desire Will Be for Your Man – Rivkah LubitchAnd He Will Rule Over You – Dana PulverWhy Was it Given to Her – Tamar BittonThe Ever-Turning Sword – Tamar BialaPart II: Matriarchs and PatriarchsThe Tears of Salt – Ruti TimorSarah’s Trials – Naama EldarSarah and the Sacrifice of Isaac – Rivkah LubitchStirrings – Bilha Kritzer ArihaAnd Where Was Sarah? – Tamar BialaIn the Presence of His Wife – Hagit RappelAnd Dinah Went Out – Rivkah LubitchThe Daughter of Dinah – Ayala TzruyaLet Your House Be Open Wide – Hagit BartovPart III: ExodusThe Midwives Saw and Feared – Orna Pilz Bitya, The Daughter of God – Gili ZivanThe Giving of the Ten Commandments – Tamar BialaPart IV: Israel in the DesertDaughters of Tzelophchad – Rivkah LubitchDeath by a Kiss: Miriam's Passing – Tamar Biala Part V: Prophets and WritingsTanot, Jephthah’s Daughter – Rivkah LubitchI Will Build You Up Again – Yael LevinA Woman of Valor – Adi BlutPart VI: Sexuality, Love, and MarriageMore Bitter than Death – Rivkah LubitchAfter Twenty-Four Years – Rivkah LubitchFor Love is as Fierce as Death – Tamar BialaThe Ways of Marriage – Avital HochsteinOne Who Did Not Find a Wife – Yael UntermanAnd Eve Knew – Efrat Garber-AranPart VII: Fertility and ParenthoodSeven Clean Days – Etti RommHe Supports the Fallen – Nehama Weingarten-MintzThe Blessing for Breastfeeding – Efrat Garber-Aran All the Mitzvot for the Son and the Daughter – Naama ShakedDaughters of The Place – Hila UnnaPart VIII: Rape and Incest And Now be Silent – Tirza Barmatz-SteinThe Father’s Scream: Concealing and Revealing – Oshrat ShohamThe Mother’s Scream: Uncovering and Expulsion – Oshrat ShohamThe Woman’s Scream: Cover-Up and Tikkun – Oshrat ShohamPart IX: Inequality in Jewish Law and in the Rabbinic CourtThe Assembly of God – Rivka LubitchRachel, A Mother of Mamzerim – Rivka LubitchMoses Visits Beruriah’s Beit Midrash – Rivka LubitchThe Refused Woman – Rivkah LubitchJamila the Objector – Rivka LubitchVows – Rivkah LubitchPart XI: Post-Holocaust TheologyA Raven and a Dove – Tamar BialaThe Shepherd in the Lilies – Dini Deutsch FrankelPart XII: HolidaysSukkot Prayer for Rain (Tefillat HaGeshem) – Ruth Gan KaganPesach The Four Daughters – Einat RamonShavu’otThe Love of Ruth and Naomi – Yael Oryan and Ziva OfekRuth, Who Interpreted – Yael UntermanContributorsAcknowledgmentsIndex

Indiana University Press American PostJudaism Identity and Renewal in a
Book SynopsisArticulates a new, post-ethnic American JewishnessTrade ReviewShaul Magid . . . has just happened to write one of the most important books on American Judaism written of late. . . . Magid has a keen eye on the politics of change and renewal as they impact Israel and the American Jewish community. * The Daily Beast *The ongoing public conversation about the future of American Judaism is embodied in a small library of recent books, many of which have been considered here. None of them, however, offers quite the same potent brew of courage, clarity, passion and expertise as Shaul Magid's American Post-Judaism . . . , a scholarly but also visionary book about what it means to be a Jew in America today. * Jewish Journal *Magid's important book is a clear and realistic – albeit incomplete – preliminary analysis of Judaism in America; its achievements; and its crises. It provides a variety of perspectives on the creation of contemporary Jewish society in the U.S. . . . that provide an accurate portrait of postethnic Judaism. * Haaretz *[Magid's] American Post-Judaism provides a timely and necessary, if controversial, entry into contemporary Jewish theology. Highly recommended. * H-Judaic *[American Post-Judaism] deals with the reality of American Jewish life with realism and with insight. * JNS *[R]equired reading for anyone directly concerned with Jewish survival, and for everyone interested in the state of institutional religion and personal spirituality in the US today. . . Highly recommended. * Choice *[T]his spirited and erudite collection has much to contribute to the sociological understanding of American Jewry. . . When read against the findings of the Pew Study, however, his observation that American Jewry has arrived at a 'between moment' strikes me as singularly prescient. * Sociology of Religion *Table of ContentsForeword Acknowledgments Introduction 1.
