Jessica Kingsley Publishers People of the Book: An Interfaith Dialogue about

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat is the role of scripture in illuminating the lives of the faithful today? In this book, three experts in Judaism, Christianity and Islam respectively discuss and debate this question, by exploring the core messages of the Torah, Bible and Qu'ran. Taking a deeper look at the wide range of theological, political and social issues that divide (and sometimes unite) their religions, they reveal how inspiration and guidance can be drawn not only on life's big questions such as sin and the afterlife, but also on societal issues including war, suffering, marriage and justice.Trade ReviewThe book offers a useful trialogue between the authors - as well as between the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Bible and the Quran - concerning the views of these three scriptures on a variety of topics, from creation to afterlife, and from land to God. As such, it not only offers the readers a glimpse into each scripture, but also a background for understanding the differences and similarities between the three scriptures, and the religions which they represent. -- Dr Zohar Hadromi-AlloucheIn this most illuminating and engaging volume, three authors, from (their) committed standpoints as Jew, Christian and Muslim, present their informed positions on a wide range of topics, ranging from the interpretation of the Word of God to gender and ethnicity, aspects that vitally affect how we live, communicate with, and understand each other in today's world. Dispelling ignorance and misunderstanding, the volume will surprise the reader as to the extent of those values and beliefs we actually share in common rather than what keeps us apart. This is a most readable, and informative book, usefully divided into helpful sections so that it can act as a reference volume as well as a work to be read in one sitting. It is an ideal resource for those engaged in interfaith dialogue, at either an academic or pastoral level and is a major contribution to promoting understanding and respect for others, whose beliefs we may not personally hold ourselves. -- Martin O'Kane, Professor Emeritus, UWTSDRich and fascinating, People of the Book will undoubtedly be used as a reference book by those who are involved in interfaith engagement. Members of each faith group will surely learn new things from this book, not just about the other religions but also about their own religious heritage. Just as surely, those outside of the interfaith arena who are seeking to understand diverse religious worldviews among their constituencies, or in the wider global environment, will benefit from this profoundly informative and thought-provoking work. -- Farhana Mayer (MA OXON), Doctoral Research Scholar, Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of OxfordGreat stories, memorable jokes, profound theory - all are interwoven in this wonderful record of what happens when a Jew, a Christian and a Muslim talk together about their scriptures. You could call it Scriptural Reasoning; or you could call it a conversation among friends of God. Whatever you call it, this book will enlighten, enliven and engross your spirit. -- Rt Revd Dr Michael Ipgrave, Bishop of LichfieldA very interesting and informative dialogue amongst three expert theologians that covers a wide range of topics from the perspective of Abrahamic faiths. The dialogue is engaging, thought-provoking and eye-opening in relation to the sources of scripture, God and man's relationship with the divine, daily life, ethics, morality and eschatology. A frank conversation like this, conducted with mutual respect, is rare in our atmosphere of exclusivist discourse, and we need more of this. I very much hope that this worthy book will inspire and encourage further such encounters. -- Sheikh Dr Salah al-Ansari, Egypt and UK-based Imam for 20 years, including at the Regent's Park Mosque (London Central Mosque)Table of ContentsAbout the Authors. Book SynopsisOne of the best-kept religious secrets has been the revolution that has been quietly taking place within Judaism over the last two decades, as it has sought to grapple with contemporary issues. These include mixed-faith marriages, gay relationships, women's empowerment, declining numbers, atheism and being trans. It has involved a willingness to abandon biblical laws that conflict with modern values. Most ground-breaking of all, it has meant re-defining what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century.Inclusive Judaism not only uncovers this religion revolution, but presents a challenge to all people of faith on how best to marry tradition and modernity. The book also reflects the soul-searching that has prompted rabbis to chart a new course, both out of principle and as a practical way of rescuing British Jewry from possible collapse if it did not adapt to the new social trends that affect us all.Trade ReviewThis book celebrates the huge advances progressive Judaism has made in recent years - inclusive, tolerant, welcoming, accepting. For anyone who thought they were excluded from Judaism, or anyone who wants to know how religion can change in the face of facts and social changes, this book is a must read. -- Baroness Rabbi Julia NeubergerReligion has long struggled with inclusivity. This engaging work lays out what an inclusive Judaism looks like, and in doing so gets to the heart of some very basic issues of how theology is to be done in the twenty-first century. Even those who reach different conclusions will profit from the moral seriousness in this fascinating challenge. -- The Reverent Canon Giles FraserAll of the welcome changes within this book are about securing a Jewish future. I stand up as a ridiculously proud Jew. Our achievements are nothing short of dazzling. I hope this book will enlighten its readers as to how we can progress, adapt to the times, yet continue to remain so. -- Maureen Lipman CBETable of Contents1. Crisis? What's Crisis? 2. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis volume of eight essays written by French scholars analyzes Daniel Mendelsohn's first three volumes of nonfiction (The Elusive Embrace, 1999, The Lost, 2006, and An Odyssey, 2017) as well as an illustrated interview (2019) in which Mendelsohn tackles various aspects of his work as a literary and cultural critic, as a professor of classical literature, as a translator, and as a memoirist. The essays discussing The Elusive Embrace (1999) argue that, in addition to offering a subtle reflection on sexual identity and genres, Mendelsohn’s first volume already broadens his topic and patiently weaves links between ancient and present times, feeding his meditation with his knowledge of Greek culture and myths—a natural movement of back and forth which would become his signature. The Lost (2006), his much acclaimed investigation into the death by bullet of six of his family members during the Shoah, is analyzed as a close-up on the disappearance of a whole world, the unspeakability of which Mendelsohn addressed through intertwining several languages, linguistic echoes, and biblical references. Finally, Mendelsohn’s recent An Odyssey (2017) is studied as a brilliant musing on teaching Homer’s masterpiece while building up a memoir on his declining father sitting among his students and allowing Homer’s universal questions and lessons to enlighten a father and son’s last journey.Trade ReviewA pioneering collection exploring Daniel Mendelsohn's several works of memoir, with astute attention to their manifold dimensions, formal complexity, and literary quality. A worthy tribute to a master. -- G. Thomas Couser, Hofstra UniversityThis is the first collection ever of Daniel Mendelsohn’s first three memoirs, preceded by a long interview offering an inspiring introduction to his work. A ground-breaking volume of essays that favors a close reading of Mendelsohn’s powerful texts. -- Jerome CharynTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction Sophie VallasPrelude: “Daniel Mendelsohn: An Interview in Arles”Interviewed by Sophie Vallas and Laurence BenarrochePhotographs by Andres Escobedo1 The Elusive Embrace: A Gay Man’s Bi-passing the Fantasy of OnenessNicolas Pierre Boileau2 Translation, Heteroglossia and Othering in Daniel Mendelsohn’s The LostYves-Charles Grandjeat3 Rescued from Oblivion–The Search for One of Six in Daniel Mendelsohn’s The Lost. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book reveals how Moses ibn Ezra, Judah Halevi, Moses Maimonides, and Shem Tov ibn Falaquera understood metaphor and imagination, and their role in the way human beings describe God. It demonstrates how these medieval Jewish thinkers engaged with Arabic-Aristotelian psychology, specifically with regard to imagination and its role in cognition. Dianna Lynn Roberts-Zauderer reconstructs the process by which metaphoric language is taken up by the imagination and the role of imagination in rational thought. If imagination is a necessary component of thinking, how is Maimonides’ idea of pure intellectual thought possible? An examination of select passages in the Guide, in both Judeo-Arabic and translation, shows how Maimonides’ attitude towards imagination develops, and how translations contribute to a bifurcation of reason and imagination that does not acknowledge the nuances of the original text. Finally, the author shows how Falaquera’s poetics forges a new direction for thinking about imagination. Table of Contents1. Introduction- 2. Book SynopsisIn this collection of essays, Markus Witte offers a survey of genres in the wisdom literature of the Old Testament as well as exegetical and thematic case studies of the books of Job, Ben Sira, Wisdom of Solomon, and the Psalms of Solomon. The author focuses especially on reflections on the justice and power of God, on human knowledge, and on good and evil. He thereby demonstrates the contribution of early Jewish wisdom to the Hellenistic culture of knowledge and to biblical theology.Table of ContentsEinleitung Literarische Gattungen in der alttestamentlichen Weisheit 3.

Book SynopsisDoes the Christian church replace the nation Israel in the plan of God? The doctrine of supersessionism answers this question in the affirmative. But is supersessionism a biblical doctrine? Michael J. Vlach offers a detailed examination of the view that the church is the new Israel that permanently takes the place of the nation Israel. He surveys the supersessionist view in church history and then examines its hermeneutical and theological arguments. He also presents a case against supersessionism. In a unique way, he lays out the arguments of both supersessionism and non-supersessionism and then offers his analysis of why supersessionism is not consistent with the biblical witness.Table of ContentsContents: A thorough examination of the church-Israel relationship – A compelling case against replacement theology – Why the church is not the new Israel.
