Shambhala Publications Inc Climbing Jacob's Ladder: One Man's Journey to
Book Synopsis“A compelling portrait of the relationship between a student and a teacher,” this spiritual memoir “raises important questions about the meaning of Judaism and the search for spirituality in this world” (Los Angeles Times)Jewish by birth, though from a secular family, Alan Morinis explored Hinduism and Buddhism as a young man. But in 1997, in the face of personal crisis, he turned to his Jewish heritage for guidance. In his reading he happened upon a Jewish spiritual tradition called Mussar. Gradually he realized that he had stumbled upon an insightful discipline for self-development, complete with meditative, contemplative, and other well-developed transformative practices designed to penetrate the deepest roots of the inner life. Eventually reaching the limits of what he could learn on his own, he decided to seek out a Mussar teacher. This was not an easy task, since almost the entire world of the Mussar tradition had been wiped out in the Holocaust. In time, he found an accomplished master who stood in an unbroken line of transmission of the Mussar tradition, and who lived in the center of a community of Orthodox Jews on Long Island. This book tells the story of Morinis’s journey to meet his teacher and what he learned from him, revealing the central teachings and practices that are the spiritual treasury and legacy of Mussar.

ATF Press The Other Side of the Story: Essays on Jews,
Book SynopsisRachael is one of the the most effective advocates of the argument that there are immense practical benefits, and even a demanding moral necessity to investigate and uncover the intricacies of religious faith... Her ability to penetrate so deeply into other peoples modes of religious expression and belief, whether they stand in light or in darkness, is remarkable and unique. At the same time, her voice of where to direct her gaze, whether at Christian media accounts of Jews in the period of the Second World War or the sexual machinations of cults of the late twentieth century or the struggles of women to make a place for themselves in religious institutions, is both brave and expansive. - Rabbi Prof. Fred Morgan. Rachael Kohns insightful comments, inform, inspire, and provoke: a lovely combination of scholarly research, journalistic clarity and personal passion. -- Prof Amy-Jill Levine, New Testament and Jewish Studies, Vanderbilt University. Rachael Kohn understands the issues she writes about at the deepest level and as well as providing a way through the thorniest controversies always keeps a sense of the shape of the whole argument... This is a superb volume. Greg Sheridan, foreign editor, The Australian, author of God is Good for You.

Baraka Books The First Jews in North America: The
Book SynopsisFilled with original documents and vintage illustrations, this history chronicles the lives of the Hart family—a Jewish family who settled in predominantly Catholic Trois-Rivières, Quebec, in 1761. Following Aaron Hart and his descendants for a century, this account not only bares the Jewish struggle for equality and freedom, but also delineates the contributions made by the various family members—including the passing of the Jewish Emancipation Act in 1832 and the creation of the Hart Memorial Trophy for the National Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player. A fascinating and comprehensive read, this book breaks new ground in its examination of the Jewish experience in North America.Trade ReviewThe saga of the Hart family . . . marks a milestone in the worldwide struggle for Jewish emancipation. . . . Vaugeois's fascinating account, amply illustrated by archival documents, is a valuable contribution to the history of Quebec, Canada and minority-majority relations." —www.MontrealGazette.com"We can feel Vaugeois's pleasure as he links history to private memoir. . . . It is charming, but Vaugeois is also politically motivated." —Victor Rabinovitch, former president and CEO of Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation"This is a fine translation. . . . Verdict: A significant contribution to our understanding of this period from the perspective of a family espousing a minority faith. Non-French-reading students of Canadian, Jewish, and North American social history will be rewarded in choosing this book." —www.LibraryJournal.com
