ACC Art Books Traditional Indian Jewellery: Beautiful People
Book SynopsisTraditional Indian Jewellery: Beautiful People is a vast and detailed publication covering the importance of ritual adornment, and the popular design motifs featured in traditional Indian jewellery. Jewellery plays an important part in the everyday lives, important moments, festivals and religious aspects of Indian culture. It is not only girls and women who wear jewellery, but also boys, men, temple statues and even animals. The book excels in its detailed descriptions, which accompany the sumptuous array of images. We discover why enamel is used in the north of India, and how ancestral craftsmen pass their skills from generation to generation, especially the process and tradition of enamelling. The book covers in detail the meaning of the use of flowers and birds in Hindu-influenced jewellery, looking through the eyes of seventeenth-century European travellers who visited the rich Mogul courts. This publication is the result of thirty-five years of research - travelling, studying, and talking to many people across the entire subcontinent of India, as well as having had unprecedented access to goldsmiths and enamellers; being shown techniques known only to one family, which have been transferred from generation to generation; and being granted access to beautiful and never before seen Royal collections.

Romisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Early Medieval Elite Jewellery from Great Moravia
Book SynopsisUsing a multidisciplinary methodology, the technological approach developed in this publication provides new insights into Great Moravian and Bohemian elite jewellery dated from the 9th and 10th centuries AD. Based on an investigation of the main types of jewels (gombiky, earrings, metallic elements of necklaces including kaptorgy, beads, and chains), it sheds light on the complex construction of these jewels, on the different manufacturing processes, and on the decoration techniques involved in their fabrication. Detailed material characterizations highlight the elemental chemical composition and purity of the alloys used by jewellers in Moravia and Bohemia through the 9th and 10th centuries. Comparisons of the size, the total number of components, the estimated manufacturing time, and the weight of precious metal needed to produce each type of jewel shed light on the level of complexity involved in their manufacture and highlight the exceptional pieces. Observations and comparisons of tool marks, defects, and quality of realization evidence the presence of very fine pieces manufactured by highly skilled goldsmiths using sophisticated tools alongside coarser products manufactured by unexperienced craftsmen with low skill and more rudimentary tools. In addition, they allow us to identify pieces likely produced in the same workshop and probable imports.

Arnoldsche Padua School: Modern Jewellery from Three
Book SynopsisThe Padua School originated from the Istituto Pietro Selvatico in Padua. The distinctive features of this jewelry are the use of gold reminiscent of the goldsmith's art in antiquity and a modern and abstract formal expression within the group. Mario Pinton, who brought the goldsmith movement international recognition and acclaim in the 1950s and '60s, is credited with founding the experimental goldsmith movement in Padua. Francesco Pavan has enlarged the scope of the Padua School with his kinetic and geometric formal idiom. The breakthrough on the international jewelry scene took place in the late 1960s with Giampaolo Babetto, under whose support the geometric and Minimalist tendency was most pronounced. Other distinguished artists in jewelry such as Graziano Visintin, Renzo Pasquale, Annamaria Zanella, Stefano Marchetti and Giovanni Corvaya continued along these lines or went their own highly individual ways by experimenting with the use of new materials including plastic. The work of these crea

Arnoldsche Sculpture to Wear: The Jewelry of Marjorie Schick
Book SynopsisFor decades the American artist Marjorie Schick has been a pioneering exponent of avant-garde jewellery. Her dynamic objects, charged with energy, are rooted in the revolutionary late 1960s European conception of jewellery and transgress the conventional boundaries of form, material and colour. The artist regards the human body as 'living sculpture' and constructs works of sculpture in a wide variety of materials to extend the body. Her works are often on an excitingly grand scale: a brooch that stretches far across the wearer's shoulder to occupy the surrounding space; a neckpiece so large that it creates its own physical environment; an object that is worn on the shoulders yet envelops the entire head. Marjorie Schick's jewellery relates to 20th-century abstract art, especially Constructivism. Here, body sculpture is created that must be classified as abstract art. Text in English and German.

Arnoldsche Sigurd Bronger: Laboratorium Mechanum
Book SynopsisA key, a safety pin, a balloon, a propeller, a voltmeter - these unexpected objects in art jewellery rewrite the world of the Norwegian "jewellery engineer" Sigurd Bronger. He carries over his fascination for machines and instruments in humorously constructed jewellery pieces, and transforms natural materials and everyday objects into meticulously executed, complex and ingenious constructions. In his Oslo "Laboratorium Mechanum", Bronger works on his witty "carrying devices" - brooches, pendants, and rings with balloons, sponges, eggs, even his mother's gallstones, or with medical equipment, which have a greater positive effect on the mind than on the physical well-being. An established feature of his work, which symbolically marks the entrance into Bronger's world, is the key. This current publication offers such a key; a review of over thirty years of his creative work: from Bronger's experiments with materials and constructions in the struggle with the avant-garde Dutch art jewellery to his attempts in fathoming out states of expansion and emptiness in jewellery. He revolutionised contemporary creative jewellery work in such a way, not just in Norway, where to this day he still finds new forms of expression at the interface of jewellery, art, design and engineering. With works from the 1980s to the present day, this book will carry you off into the humorous world of the decorative engineering art of Sigurd Bronger, one of the most significant Norwegian jewellery artists today. Text in English, German & Norwegian.

Arnoldsche Petra Zimmermann: Jewellery
Book SynopsisPetra Zimmermann occupies a unique position among emerging contemporary jewellery artists: she shares their exciting approach to the subject of jewellery and the quotable adoption of the pop culture label for defining the auteur jewellery concept in which she succeeds, this time through historical reference. The artist draws on past encounters with costume jewellery from the previous century for her rings, bracelets and brooches. Comprised of bright, colourful synthetic forms, these objects receive a framework in which their artificial appearance contrasts to the dusty splendour of the historic costume jewellery. Beguiling pieces of jewellery emerge, which combine the present fascination for glamour with an element of progression, thus referencing the costume jewellery as an essential component in the production and construction of glamour in the portrait photography of the Hollywood diva. In her latest series of works, the artist uses mass media images of models, floral motifs, architecture and design objects which broaden her scope of cultural and social interpretations. Thus behind the visual opulence of her work, she succeeds in handling relevant aesthetic and social themes in her pieces; relevant for a generation that no longer struggles against traditional conventions, but that negotiates much more in an increasingly complex environment in the search for personal and historical coherence. Petra Zimmermann is one of the most ambitious artists in contemporary jewellery. This book provides the first overview of her fascinating and exciting creative jewellery works with sumptuous images and scholarly articles.

Book Synopsis2018 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first international symposium of silver jewellery Jablonec '68. Thanks to the liberalisation endeavours as part of the 'Prague Spring', European jewellery artists from East and West came together for a 'summit' at the invitation of the Czech artists' association in Jablonec, northern Bohemia. The jewellery pieces that developed at that time have remained in the Muzeum skla a bizuterie in Jablonec nad Nisou and to this day have lost nothing of their exceptional and pioneering aura. This publication - which contains a reprint of the original catalogue from 1968 - makes these pieces accessible to a wider audience for the very first time. A document that in a wholly authentic way allows the reader to experience this unique historical moment in the history of the international studio jewellery scene. Text in English and German. Accompanies the exhibition at Die Neue Sammlung The Design Museum, Munich (DE), 10 March-3 June 2018.
