Book Synopsis We are pleased to announce the launch of the Journal of the International Qur'anic Studies Association (JIQSA). In support of the association’s mission of fostering scholarship on the Qur'an, the journal will publish twice annually. Articles will be rigorously peer-reviewed through a double-blind review process, with reviewers appointed by the Co-Editors and the international Editorial Board. The journal is being launched at a time of particular vitality and growth in Qur'anic Studies, and its primary goal is to encourage the further development of the discipline in innovative ways. Methodologies of particular interest to the journal include historical-critical, contextual-comparative, and literary approaches to the Qur'an. Die Nähe bei gleichzeitiger Differenz führte von Anfang an zu Irritationen, die im Grunde bis heute anhalten. Wie sind die Rezeption biblischer Figuren und die Kritik an den zentralen christlichen Dogmen im Koran zu bewerten? Andreas Herrmann versucht in Auseinandersetzung mit dem modernen Klassiker "The Nature of Doctrine" des nordamerikanische Theologen George A. Lindbeck eine Klärung dieser fundamentalen Fragen im christlich-islamischen Dialog. Die sich dadurch ergebenden Perspektiven werden im Kontext verschiedener Dialogthemen diskutiert. Dabei zeigt sich, dass von den durch die Philosophie Ludwig Wittgensteins inspirierten Konzeptionen Lindbecks neue Impulse für ein Verständnis des Islams als einer nachchristlichen Religion ausgehen können.

Book SynopsisFlorian A.G. Lützen untersucht in dieser Studie den Religionsbegriff ( dīn) bei Aḥmad Ibn ʿAǧība (gest. 1224/1809), seine Synthese von Sufitum und Theologie. Den Religionsbegriff beschreibt er insbesondere anhand der im "Gabriel-Hadith" dargestellten Ebenen: islām, īmān und iḥsān - Hingabe, Glaube und Vervollkommnung. Dieses Stufengebilde, von vielen Gelehrten in der späten Phase der Islamischen Theologie (etwa 1400-1800) für fundamental erachtet, eignet sich zum einen dazu, die Religion aus der Perspektive der Theologie darzustellen, und zum anderen, um den Weg des Menschen zu Gott zu beschreiben. In seiner Analyse macht der Autor deutlich, wie Ibn ʿAǧība, aufbauend auf seiner Tradition, eine Theologie konzipiert, die das Sufitum ins Zentrum stellt, ohne die anderen Disziplinen der Theologie auszuklammern.

Book SynopsisDer Radd ist eine apologetische Textgattung, die die eigene theologische Position argumentativ verteidigt beziehungsweise die Fragwürdigkeit einer anderen religiösen Position aufzudecken versucht. Eines der argumentativ dichtesten Radd-Werke ist das al-Radd ʿalā l-Naṣārā des al-Jaʿfarī (581/1185-668/1270). In dieser Studie unternimmt Serkan Ince in zweifacher Hinsicht einen ersten Schritt: er füllt eine eklatante Lücke in der Erforschung von al-Jaʿfarīs Werk und betrachtet die Radd-Literatur erstmals aus moderner, argumentationstheoretischer Perspektive. Der Autor stellt zunächst den islamischen Radd in seinen Grundzügen vor und verfolgt seine Entwicklung bis al-Jaʿfarī. Nach einer Darstellung der argumentationstheoretischen Analysemethode folgt eine eingehende Untersuchung zentraler Argumente al-Jaʿfarīs. Die Studie enthält eine vollständige Übersetzung des Hauptteils von al-Jaʿfarīs Radd.
