    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThe World Scientific Handbook of Futures Markets serves as a definitive source for comprehensive and accessible information in futures markets. The emphasis is on the unique characteristics of futures markets that make them worthy of a special volume. In our judgment, futures markets are currently undergoing remarkable changes as trading is shifting from open outcry to electronic and as the traditional functions of hedging and speculation are extended to include futures as an alternative investment vehicle in traditional portfolios. The unique feature of this volume is the selection of five classic papers that lay the foundations of the futures markets and the invitation to the leading academics who do work in the area to write critical surveys in a dozen important topics.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Overview and Introduction (Anastasios G Malliaris and William T Ziemba); Classical Contributions: Proof That Properly Anticipated Prices Fluctuate Randomly (Paul Samuelson); The Variation of Certain Speculative Prices (Benoit Mandelbrot); Commodity Futures Prices: Some Evidence on Forecast Power, Premiums, and the Theory of Storage (Eugene F Fama and Kenneth R French); Volume and Volatility in Foreign Currency Futures Markets (R Bhar and Anastasios G Malliaris); The Strategic and Tactical Value of Commodity Futures (Claude B Erb and Campbell R Harvey); New Invited Papers: Organized Futures Markets and Trading Mechanisms: A Global Perspective (Peter Alonzi); Regulatory Issues and Clearing Houses (Robert Steigerwald); Market Participants: Hedgers (Hendrik Bessembinder); Market Participants and the Role of Speculators in Futures Markets; Econometric Techniques for Chaotic Dynamics in Futures Markets (Cars H Hommes); Agricultural Markets (Angelo Vignola); Metallurgical Futures Markets (Brian M Lucey); Indices and Index Arbitrage in Futures Markets: Hedge Fund Strategies (Steve Todd and Tom Nohel); Interest Rate Futures; Foreign Exchange Markets (Tim Weithers); Energy Futures Markets (Cetin Ciner); Climate Futures Contracts (Helyette Geman); Performance of Commodity Futures Funds and Portfolio Theory (Alex Ziegler and William T Ziemba); Macro Risks and Futures Markets (Robert J Shiller); Failure of Futures Hedge Funds (William T Ziemba).

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisOver the last two decades, risk-sensitive control has evolved into an innovative and successful framework for solving dynamically a wide range of practical investment management problems. This book shows how to use risk-sensitive investment management to manage portfolios against an investment benchmark, with constraints, and with assets and liabilities. It also addresses model implementation issues in parameter estimation and numerical methods. Most importantly, it shows how to integrate jump-diffusion processes which are crucial to model market crashes. With its emphasis on the interconnection between mathematical techniques and real-world problems, this book will be of interest to both academic researchers and money managers. Risk-sensitive investment management links stochastic control and portfolio management. Because of its distinct emphasis on integrating advanced theoretical concepts into practical dynamic investment management tools, this book stands out from the existing literature in fundamental ways. It goes beyond mainstream research in portfolio management in a traditional static setting. The theoretical developments build on contemporary research in stochastic control theory, but are informed throughout by the need to construct an effective and practical framework for dynamic portfolio management. This book fills a gap in the literature by connecting mathematical techniques with the real world of investment management. Readers seeking to solve key problems such as benchmarked asset management or asset and liability management will certainly find it useful.Table of ContentsIntroduction: A Primer on Risk Sensitive Control; Diffusion Models: The Complete Market Case; Asset Management in Incomplete Markets; Managing Against a Benchmark; Introducing Constraints; Asset and Liability Managements; Jump-Diffusion Models: Jumps in Asset Prices; Affine Processes; General Jump-Diffusion Setting; Extensions to Benchmarks and ALM; Implementation: Securities Modeling; Factor Selection; Parameter Estimation and Partial Observations; Numerical Methods; Empirical Analysis.

  • Contingent Convertibles [Cocos]: A Potent

    World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Contingent Convertibles [Cocos]: A Potent

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisContingent Convertibles (CoCos) represent debt that is subject to being converted automatically into common equity under pre-specified terms of conversion if the chosen regulatory capital ratio falls to a level triggering conversion. CoCos are that subspecies of contingent capital that references regulatory (Basel III) concepts in its triggers. From 2014, trigger points are set by common equity (Common Equity Tier 1 [CET1]) in percent of risk-weighted assets [RWA] or of more complicated measures of total exposure to a variety of risks, particularly credit risk. This is the first comprehensive book on CoCos, an innovative instrument that has attracted growing attention since it was first issued in 2009.The book is mostly concerned with going-concern ‘recovery-’ rather than ‘resolution-’ CoCos, because avoiding failure and costly disruption of financial networks without government financing is the first order of business. CoCos hold a high promise of providing fully loss-absorbing equity capital when it is most needed and least available to financial institutions. Yet, having grown out of the 2007-2009 financial crisis, they are still an ‘infant’ reform instrument in many respects. Few of the instrument's design features (or even the rating, regulatory, and tax treatments) are entirely settled. This book seeks to move the discussion toward, and then past, the main decision points so that CoCos can prove their value for contingency planning and self-insurance all over the world. It is intended to increase the ability of issuers and investors to analyze and understand the different kinds of CoCos.

  • Global Derivative Debacles: From Theory To

    World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Global Derivative Debacles: From Theory To

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThis book analyzes in depth all major derivatives debacles of the last half century including the multi-billion losses and/or bankruptcy of Metallgesellschaft (1994), Barings Bank (1995), Long Term Capital Management (1998), Amaranth (2006), Société Générale (2008) , AIG (2008) and JP Morgan-Chase (2012). It unlocks the secrets of derivatives by telling the stories of institutions which played in the derivative market and lost big. For some of these unfortunate organizations it was daring but flawed financial engineering which brought them havoc. For others it was unbridled speculation perpetrated by rogue traders whose unchecked fraud brought their house down.Should derivatives be feared 'as financial weapons of mass destruction' or hailed as financial innovations which through efficient risk transfer are truly adding to the Wealth of Nations? By presenting a factual analysis of how the malpractice of derivatives played havoc with derivative end-user and dealer institutions, a case is made for vigilance not only to market and counter-party risk but also operational risk in their use for risk management and proprietary trading. Clear and recurring lessons across the different stories in this volume call not only for a tighter but also 'smarter' control system of derivatives trading and should be of immediate interest to financial managers, bankers, traders, auditors and regulators who are directly or indirectly exposed to financial derivatives.The book groups cases by derivative category, starting with the simplest and building up to the most complex — namely, Forwards, Futures, Options and Swaps in that order, with applications in commodities, foreign exchange, stock indices and interest rates. Each chapter deals with one derivative debacle, providing a rigorous and comprehensive but non-technical elucidation of what happened.What is new in the second edition? A new chapter on JP Morgan-Chase's London Whale, an in-depth discussion of credit-default swaps, and an update of the revamped regulatory framework with Basel 2.5 and Basel III against the backdrop of the Euro crisis, along with a revised and expanded discussion of the AIG debacle.Table of ContentsDerivatives and the Wealth of Nations; Forwards: Showa Shell Sekiyu K K; Citibank's Forex Losses; Bank Negara Malaysia; Futures: Amaranth Advisors LLC; Metallgesellschaft; Sumitomo; Options: Allied Lyons; Allied Irish Banks; Barings; Societe Generale; Swaps: Procter and Gamble; Gibson Greeting Cards; Orange County; Long-Term Capital Management; AIG; From Theory to Malpractice: Lessons Learned;

    World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Foreign Direct Investment And Small And Medium

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThere is a large literature dealing with the spillover effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) flows to emerging and developing economies at the aggregate level. Beyond the aggregate impacts, a growing number of studies also examine the impact of FDI spillovers on firms of different sizes, especially small and medium enterprises (SME). This book is dedicated to exploring issues relating to the various interactions between FDI flows, productivity spillovers and SMEs in Asia and beyond. It studies globalization, FDI, and regional innovation in China, and trade and investment liberalization in India. It analyses how to promote SMEs and enhance labor productivity in Singapore. It investigates the impact of intellectual property rights processes on productivity growth. It documents the use of finance and financing patterns of informal firms. It uses empirical analysis to point out the limitations of traditional banks lending to SMEs and suggests possible policy approaches facilitating them to access growth capital. It also provides an empirical investigation of the main determinants of entrepreneurial activities.

    Book SynopsisDerivatives Algorithms — Volume 1: Bones (Second Edition) is for practicing quants who already have some expertise in risk-neutral pricing and in programming, and want to build a reusable and extensible library. Rather than specific models, this volume provides foundations common to all pricing, such as C++ code structure, interfaces, and several widely used mathematical methods. It also presents a set of protocols, by which models and trades can collaborate to support pricing and hedging tasks, and illustrates their use with several example trade types and models. Readers will learn to deploy the results of their research work with productivity-enhancing methods that are not taught elsewhere, including object serialization, code generation, and separation of concerns for continuous improvement. Of all the books on derivatives pricing, only Derivatives Algorithms shows the internals of a high-quality working library. The new Second Edition is more accessible to readers who are not already familiar with the book's concepts; there is an increased focus on explaining the motivation for each step, and on providing a high-level perspective on design choices. The chapters on Persistence and Protocols have been substantially rewritten, providing motivating examples and additional detail in the code. The treatment of yield curves and funding has been modernized, with the increased sophistication required by today's markets. 1 in stock

    Book SynopsisIn this fascinating multi-disciplinary and multi-sited volume, the authors challenge reductionist and oversimplifying approaches to understanding China's engagement with Southeast Asia. Productively viewing these interactions through a 'resource lens', the editor has transcended disciplinary and area studies divides in order to assemble a dynamic and diverse group of scholars with extensive experience across Southeast Asia and in China, all while bringing together perspectives from resource economics, policy analysis, international relations, human geography, political ecology, history, sociology and anthropology. The result is an important collection that not only offers empirically detailed studies of Chinese energy and resource investments in Southeast Asia, but which attends to the complex and often ambivalent ways in which such investments have become both a source of anxiety and aspiration for different stakeholders in the region. It is essential reading for scholars seeking to understand the diverse contours of Chinese investment in Southeast Asia" — Erik Harms, Department of Anthropology, Yale UniversityTrade ReviewIn this fascinating multi-disciplinary and multi-sited volume, the authors challenge reductionist and oversimplifying approaches to understanding China's engagement with Southeast Asia. This is the question that animates this important book, complicating what is often seen in stark, binary terms. There is no simple answer, as the contributions make all too clear. Local histories and geographies, socio-cultural contexts and national policies all require an excavation of shaping factors and conditions if a semblance of explanation is to be rendered. This book helps us in that process of getting beneath the surface." — Jonathan Rigg, Director, Asia Research Institute and Raffles Professor of Social Science, Department of Geography, National University of Singapore

    Book SynopsisGlobal warming, overpopulation, the biodiversity crisis... the world we live in is in a state of emergency. This is not just an ecological problem; it is an economic problem as well. The state of the natural world impacts - and is impacted by - human society. Our actions have long-term consequences, so we must be wise in the choices we make, not least in the companies/practices we support through our investment decisions. In The Ethical Investor's Handbook, author Morten Strange connects the dots, to show how economics and finance play a direct role in perpetuating this crisis. What can we as individual investors do to avoid wrecking the Earth while growing our wealth? How can we navigate the capital allocation space without compromising our ethical values? It can be done - some of the Big Boys have done it - and this invaluable new book shows us how. Delving into topics such as alternative energy sources, conservation and natural capital, The Ethical Investor's Handbook offers practical advice on how to build a sustainable green portfolio that reaps handsome returns. There are pitfalls and stranded assets to avoid, but also new opportunities if you know where to find them. Do-gooders, with the right understanding of the issues at hand, can make a good buck!Trade ReviewStrange is articulate, has a great sense of understanding of the subject and a good turn of phrase, combined with the financial rigour, to tackle one of the key challenges facing investors who are not convinced by climate change ... I would thoroughly recommend this book! — Lawrence Gosling, Editor-in-chief, WhatInvestment (UK) It is a thoughtful reflection on what is leading us down the path to ecological meltdown, a mirror against which to determine what is `ethical’, and a practical framework on deciding what to invest in, how to do it, and why it is worth a try.”—Dr Shawn Lum, President, Nature Society (Singapore)

    Book SynopsisThe year 2020 marks the twelfth anniversary of the 2008 global recession. In the last decade, economies were seen to have weathered the global recession relatively well. From each financial crisis experienced, there is always something to be learned. However, one of the hardest parts of investing is to have control over one’s emotions. The ups and downs in the stock market are perfectly normal and it is how an investor reacts to each of them that makes a difference in their investment strategy. Following on the success of the first edition, veteran financial adviser Dr Ben Fok offers rational, well-documented insights and tips on ways to maximise your returns for your hard earned money. The 36 articles featured here, previously published in The Sunday Times and The Business Times, were written during the times of bull and bear markets. It serves as a timely reminder of the importance of managing your money, and in particular financial planning, understanding the investment world and devising strategies to protect your investments.

It focuses on how a REIT investor can make millions in REITs in a systematic way. The key lies in not only having Good Performing REITs in your investment portfolio and letting them run, but also in avoiding the Bad Performing REITs or Value Traps that will drain investors’ wealth, time and emotions. Gabriel Yap does a deep dive into how certain valuation benchmarks used by the market have proven to be faulty and gives clear guidance on how investors can grow with REITs. As inorganic growth has been an important factor in driving up REIT prices, this book also delves into REITs acquisitions with detailed case studies.
