Book SynopsisIs the Internet democratizing American politics? Do political Web sites and blogs mobilize inactive citizens and make the public sphere more inclusive? This book reveals that, contrary to popular belief, the Internet has done little to broaden political discourse but in fact empowers a small set of elites - some new, but most familiar.Trade ReviewWinner of the 2009 Donald McGannon Award for Social and Ethical Relevance in Communications Policy Research, awarded by the Donald McGannon Communications Research Center Winner of the 2010 Goldsmith Book Prize (Academic Book) "Both utopian and dystopian interpretations have been made of the Internet's influence on many spheres of life--and democracy is no exception... Absent from much of this debate is evidence-based analysis of the effects of the Internet on the business of politics. Many theories have been built on nothing more than anecdote, inference and assertion. In The Myth of Digital Democracy, political scientist Matthew Hindman fills important gaps in the evidence base, and does so accessibly."--Richard Allan, Nature "[T]here is much in Hindman's book that is persuasive, counterintuitive, and important to understanding the moment."--Matt Bai, Democracy: A Journal "Matthew Hindman's The Myth of Internet Democracy is one of the first significant efforts to bring data to bear on the relationship between the internet and democracy. He argues against the journalists and pundits who have made sweeping claims about the internet's transformative potential for democracy, and suggests that the new online bosses are not very different from the old ones. Unlike earlier sceptics, however, he has some data to support his claims."--Times Higher Education "This is a well written short book about one aspects of online politics, namely who gets read and heard when it comes to online political debate, which I recommend to any reader interested in the relation between the internet and democratic values. The book is well organized and most of content is accessible to a general readership."--Olle Blomberg, Metapsychology Online Reviews "Hindman convincingly challenges seemingly sensible claims that online communications are expanding public voice, weakening gatekeeper power, and engaging broader swaths of the citizenry in politics... By bringing new data and methods to bear in a serious critique of what were becoming consensus views about the Internet's role in public life, Hindman offers more than just another set of volleys over the net of ongoing academic debates."--John Kelly, Perspectives on Politics "The Myth of Digital Democracy ... make[s] a significant contribution to the scholarship on e-democracy."--Wendy N. Wyatt, Journal of Mass Media Ethics "Hindman's The Myth of Digital Democracy makes it possible to visualize the whole elephant. Comprehensiveness and rich data support Hindman's central claim about inegalitarian outcomes of the interactions of Internet and politics, and provide an excellent starting point for future research."--Meelis Kitsing, Journal of PoliticsTable of ContentsList of Illustrations ix Acknowledgments xi Chapter One: The Internet and the "Democratization" of Politics 1 Democratization and Political Voice 4 A Different Critique 8 Gatekeeping, Filtering, and Infrastructure 12 The Difference between Speaking and Being Heard 16 Chapter Two: The Lessons of Howard Dean 20 The Liberal Medium? 21 "Big Mo'" Meets the Internet 26 The Internet and the Infrastructure of Politics 27 The End of the Beginning 34 Chapter Three: "Googlearchy": The Link Structure of Political Web Sites 38 What Link Structure Can Tell Political Scientists 41 The Link Structure of Online Political Communities 45 Site Visibility and the Emergence of Googlearchy 54 The Politics of Winners-Take-All 56 Chapter Four: Political Traffic and the Politics of Search 58 The Big Picture 60 Traffic Demographics 67 Search Engines and (the Lack of) User Sophistication 68 What Users Search For 70 Search Engine Agreement 78 How Wide a Gate? 80 Chapter Five: Online Concentration 82 Barriers to Entry 83 Distribution, Not Production 86 Online Concentration 90 Comparative Data, Comparative Metrics 91 A Narrower Net 99 Chapter Six: Blogs: The New Elite Media 102 Blogs Hit the Big Time 103 Bloggers and the Media 105 So You Want to Be a Blogger 113 Blogger Census 118 Bloggers and Op-Ed Columnists 125 Rhetoric and Reality 127 Chapter Seven: Elite Politics and the "Missing Middle" 129 The Limits of Online Politics 131 A Narrower Net 133 Political Organizing and the Missing Middle 139 New Technology, Old Failures 141 Appendix: On Data and Methodology 143 Support Vector Machine Classifiers 143 Surfer Behavior and Crawl Depth 150 Hitwise's Data and Methodology 151 References 155 Index 173

Thus, it weaves the virtual and real in relation to so-called old and new technologies using globalization and technology as the frame for examination. Implicit in this investigation is the question of how offline actualities and online cultures are in turn shaped by online hierarchies, as well as different kinds of local access to global contexts. This book reveals the logic of particular global-local directions that emerge within digital, transnational capital and labor flows. CHAN, Center for East Asian Studies, Stanford UniversitySimon Shen and Shaun Breslin note how the emergence of an online civil society in China intrinsically provides some form of supervision of state power, and perhaps even a check on it. * Brookings, June 2010 *This volume is one of the most original and important volumes for years on China's international relations. It looks at the growing phenomenon of the emergence of a quasi-civil society in China via the internet, and uses it as a basis for a rethinking of how China relates to the rest of the world, including the battlegrounds with the Western world for power such as Africa and Latin America. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewIntriguing, topical, balanced, and well-supported by empirical information, Ethnopolitics in Cyberspace will likely become an important book on the contemporary evolution of nationalism. -- Karim H.Karim, Carleton University in OttawaClear and comprehensive, essential reading for students and scholars alike, an authoritative analysis of nationalism and nationality in the era of the Internet, Ethnopolitics in Cyberspace fills a critical gap in our hitherto anecdotal understanding of the use of the Web by cyber-elites and peoples without countries. Lexington Books Ethnopolitics in Cyberspace

Book SynopsisDefying predictions that the Internet would eventually create a world where nations disappeared in favor of a unified ''global village,'' the new millennium has instead seen a proliferation of nationalism on the Web. Cyberspace, a vast digital terrain built upon interwoven congeries of data and sustained through countless public/private communication networks, has even begun to alter the very fabric of national identity. This is particularly true among stateless nations, diasporic groups, and national minorities, which have fashioned the Internet into a shield again the assimilating efforts of their countries of residence. As a deterritorialized medium that allows both selective consumption and inexpensive production of news and information, the Internet has endowed a new generation of technology-savvy elites with a level of influence that would have been impossible to obtain a decade ago. Challenged nations-from Assyrians to Zapotecs-have used the Web to rewrite history, engage in political activism, and reinvigorate moribund languages. This book explores the role of the Internet in shaping ethnopolitics and sustaining national identity among four different national groups: Albanians outside of Albania, Russians in the ''near abroad,'' Roma (Gypsies), and European Muslims. Accompanying these case studies are briefer discussions of dozens of other online national movements, as well as the ramifications of Internet nationalism for offline domestic and global politics. The author discusses how the Internet provides new tools for maintaining national identity and improves older techniques of nationalist resistance for minorities. Bringing together research and methodologies from a range of fields, Saunders fills a gap in the social science literature on the Internet''s central role in influencing nationalism in the twenty-first century. By creating new spaces for political discourse, alternative avenues for cultural production, and novel means of social organization, the Web is remaking what it means to be part of nation. This insightful study provides a glimpse of this exciting and sometimes disturbing new landscape.Trade ReviewIntriguing, topical, balanced, and well-supported by empirical information, Ethnopolitics in Cyberspace will likely become an important book on the contemporary evolution of nationalism. Book SynopsisThis book investigates through a network approach the progressive construction of a new Internet governance (IG) discourse resulting from the joint participation of institutional and non-institutional actors in the Internet Governance Forum.Trade ReviewWith the advances in information communication technologies and the subsequent rise of the Internet, new avenues for research continue to open. Pavan (Univ. of Trento, Italy) opens a new avenue by analyzing specific structures of the Global Communication Governance (GCG) from both a systematic theoretical and empirical framework. GCG is defined as the sum of all political processes underpinning the management of information and communication matters from a supranational perspective. Based on sophisticated frames and network analyses and within the broader context of GCG, the study focuses on the development and consolidation of the global Internet Governance (IG) following the 2003-05 World Summit on the Information Society and pays close attention to the collaborative and dynamic roles played by institutional and noninstitutional actors. Relying on a bottom-up approach where the empirical investigation of these dynamic and collaborative relationships focuses on the emerging practices within IG, the study first discusses the structural and historical elements that gave rise to GCG and introduces the joint operational tools associated with the frames and network analyses. Book SynopsisSince its popularization in the mid 1990s, the Internet has impacted nearly every aspect of our cultural and personal lives. Over the course of two decades, the Internet remained an unregulated medium whose characteristic openness allowed numerous applications, services, and websites to flourish. By 2005, Internet Service Providers began to explore alternative methods of network management that would permit them to discriminate the quality and speed of access to online content as they saw fit. In response, the Federal Communications Commission sought to enshrine net neutrality in regulatory policy as a means of preserving the Internet's open, nondiscriminatory characteristics. Although the FCC established a net neutrality policy in 2010, debate continues as to who ultimately should have authority to shape and maintain the Internet's structure. Regulating the Web brings together a diverse collection of scholars who examine the net neutrality policy and surrounding debates from a varietyTrade ReviewRegulating the Web is a series of 11 essays that grew out of panel discussions from the 2011 National Communication Association meeting. As such, it shares the strengths found in many books growing out of conferences. It is well researched and full of very current information as of the time of its publication. Contributors present novel and informative perspectives on the history, politics, and current state of the Internet. This is a worthwhile read for audiences interested in the topic of net neutrality. Book SynopsisWith the leverage of digital reproducibility, historical messages of hate are finding new recipients with breathtaking speed and scope. The rapid growth in popularity of right-wing extremist groups in response to transnational economic crises underscores the importance of examining in detail the language and political mobilization strategies of the New Right. In Europe, for example, populist right-wing activists organized around an anti-immigration agenda are becoming more vocal, providing pushback against the increase in migration flows from North Africa and Eastern Europe and countering support for integration with a categorical rejection of multiculturalism. In the United States, anti-immigration sentiment provides a rallying point for political and personal agendas that connect the rhetoric of borders with national, racial, and security issues. The second edition takes into account the most recent research and developments and provides current analyses of new tools for microblogging and visual blogging. Jill Walker Rettberg discusses the ways blogs are integrated into today's mainstream social media ecology, where comments and links from Twitter and Facebook may be more important than the network between blogs that was significant five years ago, and questions the shift towards increased commercialization and corporate control of blogs. The new edition also analyses how smart phones with cameras and social media have led a shift towards more visual emphasis in blogs, with photographs and graphics increasingly foregrounded. University Press of America Misbehavior in Cyber Places

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book studies computer-mediated, interpersonal Internet activity up to the turn of the century, examining virtual misbehavior across a wide range of online environments. It also lays out the theoretical framework and fundamental ideas of media ecology, a branch of communication scholarship, highly relevant for understanding digital technology.Trade ReviewTo be programmed or to program? That is the question. For media ecology scholars, it is time to examine digital media from a new perspective. Janet Sternberg gives her answer to the above question in the book Misbehavior in Cyber Places: The Regulation of Online Conduct in Virtual Communities on the Internet. In comparison with monographs on digital media or human behavior, the book is intriguing because it revisits media ecology both from social and human behavioral perspectives and acts as an important call for scholarship on studies involving situationist-based medium theory. * International Journal of Communication *[This book] is a foundational work on the new senses of place that are arising with digital media. Sternberg catalogues and analyzes the new genres of mischief and mayhem, nuisances and nastiness, and crimes and creative activism that have emerged in online communities. In so doing, Sternberg creatively reveals the social construction of new conceptions of normative behavior in virtual interactions and the development of the mechanisms to enforce the boundaries of what is seen as ‘acceptable.’ Sternberg is a lucid writer and clear thinker. Her book holds significant long-term theoretical value as a major advance in situationist-based medium theory. -- Joshua Meyrowitz, professor of communication, University of New Hampshire, Durham, author of No Sense of PlaceThe next real generation of media theorists in the spirit of McLuhan, Ong, and Innis has finally arrived as Janet Sternberg. She revisits media ecology in the social and behavioral landscape of the net, upscaling the study of media onto an altogether new playing field: human misbehavior. From cheaters to spoilsports to shamans, this is not your mother’s media analysis. -- Douglas Rushkoff, author of Program or Be ProgrammedThis study represents an important contribution to the research on computer communication. Sternberg makes it clear that we cannot fully comprehend behavior online unless we first examine misbehavior, that rules and roles are most visible when they are violated. The media ecology approach that Sternberg employs, especially when incorporating symbolic interactional, relational, and situational perspectives, is essential to a comprehensive understanding of our new electronic environments. -- Lance Strate, professor of communication and media studies, Fordham University, author of On the Binding Biases of Time and Echoes and ReflectionsEveryone who has ever used the Internet has experienced online misbehavior first hand. So why haven’t scholars written more about it? Janet Sternberg’s book Misbehavior in Cyber Places is one of the few comprehensive treatments of the issue. -- Amy Bruckman, associate professor in the School of Interactive Computing, Georgia Institute of TechnologyA useful inventory of types of social and criminal online misbehavior, understood within a media ecology framework. Flamers, spammers, pranksters, virtual rapists, hackers—Sternberg captures the running battles between the Athenians and Visigoths of virtual communities, and shows us how netizens can control and police their cyber places. She examines digital skirmishes filtered through media ecology’s understandings of environment, space, place, and situation, allowing her broad generalizations about the Internet as medium as well as concrete assessments of particular online misbehavior occurring in concrete contexts. The prerogatives and limitations of the Internet’s rule-makers, rule-enforcers, and community pressures are illustrated with clear examples and envisioned with sensitive, pragmatic, ethical guidelines. Her award-winning research on and visions of cyber relationships is now available to all netizens. Bravo! -- Bruce Gronbeck, A. It explores the Internet's history and effects in four distinct and, to some, surprising societies–Iran, Estonia, South Korea, and Senegal - profiling Web pioneers in these countries and surveying the environments in which they each work.Trade Review"An essential book for thought-provoking summer reading. In The Internet of Elsewhere, technology journalist Cyrus Farivar explores the role of the internet as a social, political and economic catalyst through compelling case studies from four unexpected countries: Iran, Estonia, South Korea, and Senegal." * The Atlantic *"Cyrus Farivar's skill as a perceptive analyst and captivating storyteller let us see the future of a connected world through his seasoned eyes." -- Ethan Zuckerman * Berkman Center for Internet and Society, Harvard University *"Cyrus Farivar, a great friend of Estonia, has chronicled my country's recent and unprecedented technological history with this exceptional book. He understands not only what Estonia can teach the rest of the world but, moreover, he makes the insightful case for the necessity of modern global citizens to understand crucial Internet issues." -- The Honorable President Toomas Hendrik Ilves * Estonia *"The Internet of Elsewhere presents four stories of the Internet that diverge from the stories people are used to reading. Rather than looking at the development of the Internet in the wealthier Western countries, Farivar looks at four countries that do not immediately spring to mind when one thinks about the Internet: South Korea, Senegal, Estonia, and Iran. An interesting work that breaks the history of the Internet out of the history of Silicon Valley. Highly recommended." * Choice *"There's nothing like a good shot of clear-eyed, upbeat globalism to shatter the dreary national myopia and restore our sense of wonder about what really is an amazing contemporary world. Book SynopsisAn impassioned exploration of the ways in which social media has manipulated us all‘Witty, rigorous, and as urgent as a fire alarm’ Dorian Lynskey ‘Cooly prosecutorial’ Guardian Nobody meant for this to happen. Facebook didn’t mean to facilitate a genocide. Twitter didn’t want to be used to harass women. YouTube never planned to radicalise young men. But with billions of users, these platforms need only tweak their algorithms to generate more ‘engagement’. In so doing, they bring unrest to previously settled communities and erode our relationships. Social warming has happened gradually - as a by-product of our preposterously convenient digital existence. But the gradual deterioration of our attitudes and behaviour on- and offline - this vicious cycle of anger and outrage - is real. And it can be corrected. Here’s how.Trade Review‘Social media was meant to bring us closer together. Instead, it tore us apart. Charles Arthur has written the definitive account of how arrogance and greed got us into this mess, and how we might get out of it. Witty, rigorous, and as urgent as a fire alarm.’ -- Dorian Lynskey‘A guide to how the apps we use every day are hacking our politics, our society, and even who we are. It reads like science fiction, except he’s describing our world – right now.’ -- Ian Dunt‘Coolly prosecutorial’ * Guardian *‘A compelling account of how a handful of social media platforms came to dominate society and how to minimise the damage they cause, because “We can’t uninvent them”.’ * Mirror *‘The rapidity with which social media has come to dominate communications in this country – in less than two decades – has been breathtaking… Arthur helps bring the whole complex issue into greater focus here. He looks at the origins of social media, describing its early promise, and then follows the dangerous paths the phenomenon has been taking in recent years.’ -- Booklist‘Fascinating… As “connected” as we may feel on social media, Social Warming thoroughly shows how detached we’ve all become not just online but in real life too.’ * Porchlight *
