Book SynopsisTrade Review"Reflecting on the repatriation of cultural property, this study covers disputed objects from the differing perspectives of ownership on the part of European museums in Austria, the UK, France, and Germany that currently hold cultural artifacts originally taken from Mexico. . . . Carroll reflects on the controversial five-centuries-long history in Mexico and Austria of El Penacho, the titular contested crown, believed to have belonged to Aztec Emperor Moctezuma Xocoyotzin. . . . The study concludes with an analysis of the ethics of keeping artifacts in museums in the future." * Choice *"The Contested Crown is a beautifully written and engaging work, effectively weaving together family history, colonial studies, museum politics, conservation dilemmas, national agendas, and personal reflections. Carroll situates the book in a global art history while also considering a psychological dimension of the protagonists’ feelings, from guilt to intimacy.” -- Sally Price, author of Paris Primitive: Jacques Chirac's Museum on the Quai Branly“I urge you to spend some time with The Contested Crown—an original, personal, and creative insight into the repatriation debate from someone uniquely placed to comment. The University of Chicago Press The Powers of War and Peace The Constitution and

Book SynopsisSince the September 11 attacks on the United States, the Bush administration has come under fire for its methods of combating terrorism. Waging war against al Qaeda has proven to be a legal quagmire, with critics claiming that the administration's response in Afghanistan and Iraq is unconstitutional. The war on terrorand, in a larger sense, the administration's decision to withdraw from the ABM Treaty and the Kyoto accordshas many wondering whether the constitutional framework for making foreign affairs decisions has been discarded by the present administration. John Yoo, formerly a lawyer in the Department of Justice, here makes the case for a completely new approach to understanding what the Constitution says about foreign affairs, particularly the powers of war and peace. Looking to American history, Yoo points out that from Truman and Korea to Clinton's intervention in Kosovo, American presidents have had to act decisively on the world stage without a declaration of war. They are a

  • Political Ideologies in Contemporary Russia

McGill-Queen's University Press Political Ideologies in Contemporary Russia

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the realm of political discourse there is a distinct gap in understanding between Russia and the West. To an outsider, the ideas that animate the actions of Russia's ruling elite, opposition, and civil society remain shrouded in mystery. This key text is a major contribution to our understanding of this world power.Trade Review"A useful rejoinder to much of the simplistic analysis of Russia that predominates nowadays. Chebankova displays an excellent mastery of the subject matter and treats it in a balanced and fair way. This book will benefit scholars and members of the general public interested in a more detailed analysis of modern Russia." Paul Robinson, University of Ottawa“[Chebankova]’s forensic, historically grounded, and comparatively informed treatment of Russia’s main ideological trends is a valuable addition to our understanding of contemporary Russian politics. It successfully argues that Russian intellectual life is more vibrant and pluralist than is often presented, as well as far more complex." H-Russia

  • Rivals in Arms

McGill-Queen's University Press Rivals in Arms

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAs the UK leaves the European Union and as the multilateral order is increasingly under stress, bilateral security links are more important than ever. Among such relationships, the UK-France partnership has become particularly critical in the past decades. Alice Pannier''s Rivals in Arms reveals the history of the growing special partnership between Europe''s two leading military powers in the twenty-first century. Using an innovative analytical framework rooted in theories of cooperation and negotiation, this book exposes the challenges the two countries have faced to develop, equip, and employ their military capabilities together. Through a decade-long study, Pannier highlights how France and the UK have endeavoured to make their partnership more effective and resistant to domestic and international shifts, including Brexit. Building on more than one hundred interviews with key stakeholders and unmatched access to primary sources, Rivals in Arms takes the reader behind the scenes, inTrade Review“Pannier offers a substantial contribution to the literature on the UK-France relations in the realm of defence given that the Brexit environment opens new avenues for the research. The author successfully extends the theoretical assumptions of bilateral relations and emphasizes their importance when it comes to defence matters in a world of swaying multilateral commitments.” Journal of Contemporary European Studies“Rivals in Arms is recommended for a primarily academic audience with an interest in IR theory, contemporary military affairs, and European politics and diplomacy.” The Northern Mariner / Le marin du nord“This book is a timely reminder of how far the British and French have come over the past decade in surmounting obstacles to collaboration. Successes in force planning and the nuclear realm could serve as templates for future cooperation even if the entente between Downing Street and the Elysée remains less than cordiale.” International Affairs“Alice Pannier provides a comprehensive overview and in-depth study of the relationship between France and the UK. The shift back towards bilateral relationships in European security and defence with the focus on Franco-British cooperation is a very welcomed addition to the literature. The book will not only appeal to academics and advanced students of European security and defence, but specifically also to experts and policymakers who are interested in deepening their knowledge and understandings of this special relationship.” European Security“Rivals in Arms establishes the complex relation between bilateral cooperation and multilateral settings through a robust framework of analysis. It also offers a rich narrative of Anglo-French inner-state and inter-state learning, so often unintelligible to outside observers. Although published in 2020, before successive challenges rocked the boundaries of the European and transatlantic security frameworks, the book will continue to appeal to those with an interest in European security and state decision-making on defence.” Modern & Contemporary France

  • Multilateral Sanctions Revisited

McGill-Queen's University Press Multilateral Sanctions Revisited

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisSanctions are back with a vengeance, with new objectives, measures, challenges, and opportunities. Shaping the thinking of generations of scholars, Canadian Margaret Doxey anticipated and analyzed these issues. Multilateral Sanctions Revisited applies her lessons to the many multilateral sanctions that define our geopolitically contested world.Trade Review“Margaret Doxey (1975) wrote much of her influential work on sanctions in an era characterized by young international institutions, against the backdrop of the geopolitical tensions of the Cold War. The 16 women who contribute to [this book] honor Doxey's scholarship in a time of re-emerging global tensions. Contemporary sanctions are smarter than ever, but they fail to make up for the eroding moral legitimacy of measures imposed outside of the framework of the UN. Regardless of the reader's stand in the debate between respecting the consensus below the ceiling or pursuing higher norms above and beyond it, the inevitable consequence is that multiple unilateral sanctions can never be as effective as truly multilateral ones.” World Affairs"Cutting-edge considerations and scholarly insight … de facto make Multilateral Sanctions Revisited the new reference point in multilateral sanctions studies. Furthermore, as all the contributions(and even reviews) are made by female-only sanctions experts, this volume is … tangible proof of the successful path a once-solitary female voice helped shape for many subsequent female scholars in the discipline.” International Spectator“... expertly and comprehensively explained ... [this] book provides an authoritative guide to the use of multilateral sanctions and the UN’s central role in it. While the future of the UN and multilateral sanctions looks uncertain, this book provides an excellent guide to all aspects of its past and present.” International Affairs

McGill-Queen's University Press Distant Stage Quebec Brazil and the Making of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDistant Stage examines the neglected histories of Canada-Brazil relations and the role culture played in Canada’s pursuit of an international identity. French-Canadian artists, intellectuals, and diplomats are at the heart of both. Eric Fillion shows how Brazil served as a distant stage where Canadian identity politics and aspirations could play out.Trade Review“The research in Distant Stage is excellent, and the writing is really exceptional; it is a pleasure to be guided through the significance of the interwoven cultural episodes at the heart of this book. This is truly a study of two countries’ relations in the cultural and diplomatic fields, not simply Canada's approach to one country. Nonetheless, it does a great deal to rectify the neglect of Quebec, French Canada, and Catholicism in English scholarship on Canada and the world.” David Webster, Bishop's University and author of Fire and the Full Moon: Canada and Indonesia in a Decolonizing World

Socialist Yugoslavia and the Non-Aligned Movement understands the NAM as a site for transnational cultural exchange, and explores the movement’s decolonial alternatives to global inequalities.Trade Review“This astute volume brings together the latest research by established Non-Aligned Movement specialists – most of which is being published in English for the first time. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the book deals with important questions raised by prior works and presents unused material, leading to new interpretations.” Nataša Mišković, co-editor of The Non-Aligned Movement and the Cold War: Delhi-Bandung-Belgrade“This edited volume by Paul Stubbs will serve as an essential reference point and an insight into the work of some of the most prolific participants in this discussion … highly recommended to a wide audience. [Socialist Yugoslavia and the Non-Aligned Movement] is a representative, accessible and enjoyable read [that] comes at a time when a strong voice from the peripheral and marginalised is as important as ever. Rigorous scholarship such as that provided in this book will helps us better understand and defend or regain historical memory.” Europe-Asia Studies

Book SynopsisChomsky takes on the international scene since 1945, devoting particular attention to events following the collapse of the Soviet Union. He develops a forceful critique of Western government, from imperialist foreign policies to the Clinton administration's empty promises to the poor.Trade ReviewFor nearly thirty years now, Noam Chomsky has parsed the main proposition of American power-what they do is aggression, what we do upholds freedom-with encyclopedic attention to detail and an unflagging sense of outrage. World Orders Old and New... may be his best book; it's certainly his most concise and far-ranging. Utne Reader With his customary mastery of the historical record and his command of enormous amounts of source material, Chomsky here debunks the notion that the 'new world order' of Bush and Clinton is different in any essentials from the old world order... Book SynopsisLooks beneath the rhetoric of hatred and misunderstanding to challenge the views of Islamic history. argues that beginning in the 1950's American policymakers misread the Muslim world and, instead of focusing on the growing discontent against the government, saw only a forum for liberal, democratic reforms within those governments.Trade ReviewRichard Bulliet's The Case for Islamo-Christian Civilization re-examines most of the pieties of the West about the Muslim world and Islamic politics (and about the West itself) and finds them not only wrong but wrongly conceived... He argues that modern European and Muslim history are deeply intertwined and that one cannot be understood in isolation from the other, thereby launching a profound challenge to teachers, historians and policy-makers. -- Juan Cole, University of Michigan The International Journal of Middle East Studies [An] insightful book about Islam and Muslims that actually provides hope for the future... this book is a quick, informative, and encouraging read. Publishers Weekly A clearly written book, aimed at the general reader...requires a place on the library shelf -- Steve Young Library Journal Presents a persuasive case for viewing Islam and the West... [a]brilliant new book -- Emran Qureshi Toronto Globe and Mail Seeks to bridge a gap between Islam and the West... His solution is to try to patch things up by emphasizing all that Islam and Christianity have in common. -- Daniel Lazare The Nation As Bulliet writes... there is a far better case for 'Islamo-Christian civilization' than there is for a clash of civilizations. Washington Monthly Offers a rich lode of penetrating insights. -- L. Carl Brown Foreign Affairs A positive and challenging proposal, underscoring the importance of the phases we use in defining our world. Future Survey Obviously, this is an important book with the important proposal to familiarize everyone with the term "Islam-Christian civilization". Let us take heed. -- Murad Wilfried Hofmann The Muslim World Book Review It deserves the widest possible readership, addressing as it does with wit and insight one of the most freighted issues of our times. -- Malise Ruthven Times Literary Supplement Bulliet's ideas are collectively imaginative and a major contribution... Book SynopsisSeyom Brown’s authoritative account of U.S. foreign policy from the end of the Second World War to the presenTrade Review[A]n analysis with difference-an important difference. Seyom Brown discusses United States policy from the perspective of how decision makers in the United States viewed their adversaries and the alternatives as those decision makers saw them... Well worth the effort of a careful reading. Brilliant clarity in understanding complex situations makes this book particularly rewarding. -- Ronald E. Broad, deep, and wise, it is simply an indispensable introduction to all aspects of China's ongoing encounter with the world at large. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewWorking from North Korean media, Patrick McEachern shows that, whatever might have been the case under Kim Il Sung, North Korea under his son, Kim Jong Il, is not the unknowable and irrational totalitarian state presented by many commentators. Since the elder Kim's death in 1994, the country's political structure has evolved. The younger Kim is undoubtedly powerful but has neither his father's revolutionary credentials nor his personal charisma and does not always succeed in imposing his views. It is these policy debates that lie behind the apparent abrupt swings from engagement to non-engagement, not some inherent irrationality in the North Korean polity, and it pays to study them. This stimulating and well-written book does just that. It should be required reading for all those interested in or involved with North Korea. -- J. E. Hoare, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and coauthor of North Korea in the Twenty-First Century It is conventional wisdom that information on North Korea is hard to come by, but in fact, the opposite is true. Most researchers quickly find themselves drowning in information, and the real challenge is to make sense of the deluge of data and separate the wheat from the chaff. Patrick McEachern rejects easy routes and embraces the project of using sound social science methodologies to examine a mountain of primary sources. The result of his painstaking analysis is the illumination of domestic politics in Pyongyang-opening up the "red box." While McEachern's findings can be disputed, they cannot be ignored-this book is a must read for any serious student of North Korea. -- Andrew Scobell, Senior Political Scientist, RAND Corporation ...deserve to be added to the list of essential readings on the modern politics of North Korea... -- Marc Lanteigne International Affairs This is a brilliant book that should be read by anyone with an interest in Korean affairs. Survival McEachern's book is a highly useful source for those interested in a comprehensive and nuanced overview of North Korean domestic and foreign policies in the Kim Jong Il era.
