Book Synopsis“Dazzling and instructive . . . [a] magisterial new book.” —Walter Isaacson, TimeAn astute analysis that illuminates many of today''s critical international issues. —Kirkus Reviews Henry Kissinger offers in World Order a deep meditation on the roots of international harmony and global disorder. Drawing on his experience as one of the foremost statesmen of the modern era—advising presidents, traveling the world, observing and shaping the central foreign policy events of recent decades—Kissinger now reveals his analysis of the ultimate challenge for the twenty-first century: how to build a shared international order in a world of divergent historical perspectives, violent conflict, proliferating technology, and ideological extremism. There has never been a true “world order,” Kissinger observes. For most of history, civilizations defined their own concepts of orde

  • European Blame Games

Oxford University Press European Blame Games

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWho is held responsible when EU policies fail? Which blame games resonate in the European public? European Blame Games challenges the conventional wisdom that the complexity of EU decision-making eschews clarity of responsibility, thereby rendering European blame games untargeted and diffuse. The book argues that the politicization of EU policies triggers a plausibility assessment of blame attributions in the public domain with the effect that European blame games gravitate towards true responsibilities, targeting those political actors involved in enacting a policy that is subsequently considered a policy failure. It distinguishes three kinds of European blame games. In scapegoat games, supranational EU institutions are held responsible for a policy failure. Renegade games occur when individual member state governments are considered the culprits for a failed policy. When responsibility for a policy failure is shared between EU institutions and member states, diffusion games prevail. The book also explores three conditions to explain when each of the three European blame games prevails: the type of policy failure, the type of policy making, and the type of policy implementation. To empirically probe these conditions, European Blame Games studies the blame games in ten instances of EU policy failures, including EU foreign policy, environmental policy, fiscal stabilization, and migration policy.Transformations in Governance is a major academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, and environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states to supranational institutions, subnational governments, and public-private networks. It brings together work that advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars. The series is edited by Liesbet Hooghe and Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Walter Mattli of the University of Oxford. This is an open access title available under the terms of a [CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International] licence. • International Norm Disputes The Link between

Oxford University Press International Norm Disputes The Link between

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume offers a study of when and why contested international norms decline. It includes four contemporary case studies (the torture prohibition, the responsibility to protect, the duty to prosecute institutionalized in the ICC, and commercial whaling) and two historical case studies (privateering and the transatlantic slave trade).Trade ReviewThis timely study tests the limits of normative contestation. This team of scholars show that it is important to distinguish challenges to the application of a norm from those that challenge the very validity of the norm itself. The former may help to bring potential adherents onboard, while the latter is more likely to spell instability. This study makes an important contribution at a time when international norms seem besieged from the left and the right. * Beth Simmons, Andrea Mitchell University Professor in Law, Political Science and Business Ethics University of Pennsylvania *International Norm Disputes unpacks the effects of international norm contestation, arguing that disputes over the application of norms can shift their content, but arguments over the validity of norms can undermine them. A striking finding, across six rich and nuanced case studies, is that the clustering of norms and their embeddedness in institutions that promote procedural fairness enhance norm robustness. The book offers an important advance in our understanding of international norm dynamics. * Wayne Sandholtz, John A. McCone Chair in International Relations, Professor of International Relations and Law, University of Southern California *International Norm Disputes is the long-awaited summary of a decade of frontline research on the contestation of international norms. Combining theory development, in-depth case studies, and comparison, the book significantly advances our understanding of the normative robustness of the liberal international order. * Jonas Tallberg, Professor of Political Science University of Stockholm *This book represents a major milestone in the study of norm contestations and norm robustness. The distinction between applicatory and validity contestations specifies the conditions under which challenges to international norms strengthen or weaken international institutions. A "must read!" at a time when the liberal international order faces deep contestations! * Thomas Risse, Director, Berlin International College of Research and Graduate Training Senior Professor, Cluster of Excellence "Contestations of the Liberal Script" Freie Universität Berlin *Table of Contents1: Introduction: Contestation and the dynamics of norm robustness 2: The international torture prohibition: A contested norm endures 3: The responsibility to protect: A robust but changing norm? 4: Contesting the IWC moratorium on commercial whaling: A norm weakens at the international level 5: Losing Africa? Book SynopsisNATO was hugely successful in facing off the Soviet Union during the Cold War. But has it been equally successful in addressing the new threats of the post-Cold War era? This new study assesses the organization's political and military initiatives, and how its outreach to Russia, Ukraine, and other countries in the Euro-Atlantic and Mediterranean regions, devoted considerable attention to WMD proliferation risks. It also probes the political factors, both inside and outside NATO, as well as resource constraints, which have limited the alliance''s added value in the international community''s effort to combat proliferation. The events of 11 September 2001 and bitter intra-alliance controversy over the 2003 Iraq intervention have highlighted questions regarding NATO''s future role, and even its continued viability. This is a serious reflection on how the alliance should figure in the fight against WMD and terrorist threats and an examination of today's key Trade Review'A well-researched book ... 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe dramatic surge in regional integration schemes over the past two decades has been one of the most important developments in world politics. Virtually all countries are now members of at least one regional grouping. South Asia is no exception to this trend. In December 1985, seven South Asian countries came together to establish South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to address issues of peace and development in the region. This book examines regionalism in South Asia, exploring the linkages between institutional structures, government capabilities, and domestic actors' preferences to explain the dynamics of regional cooperation. It considers the formation and evolution of SAARC, explaining why its growth in terms of institutional developments and program implementation has remained modest and slow over the past two decades. It also addresses the impact of important issues such as the acquisition of nuclear capabilities by India and Pakistan, the unendingTable of Contents1. Introduction 2. Book SynopsisLike most years in the 50-year history of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), 2008 saw events that could have significant consequences for international relations and global balances of power. These included the election of Barack Obama as US president; the brief war in Georgia, which caused the West to look at Russia with more watchful eyes; and a cataclysmic crisis in the world's financial markets that seemed to threaten globalisation and even capitalism, and to herald a period of greater economic austerity. Even as these events occurred, the security issues and risks that have been the core focus of the work of the IISS during the past half-century continued to loom large, among them nuclear proliferation and the relations between the major powers. In addition to these perennial themes was another set of issues that has in recent times risen higher on the international security agenda, including the security ramifications of natural disasters and envTable of ContentsContributors -- Foreword John Chipman -- Introduction Alexander Nicoll and Tim Huxley -- I. Book SynopsisNo region of the world has been more affected by the forces of instability and the factors of war and insecurity than has the Middle East. The area has seen more violence and conflict in the last three or four decades than all of the other world regions put together. Moreover, conflict in the area has an international significance far beyond its borders. These events and issues have also been of the greatest international and academic interest, with much study generated. The editor's choice of materials in this new Routledge collection is based on an effort to cover a full range of issues concerning external and internal threats to the stability of Middle Eastern states as well as the means by which they try to ensure their security both at home and abroad. The topics include military, ideological, sub-national, Islamist, and economic challenges. In geographic terms it encompasses the greater Middle East: the Arab world, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, and Afghanistan.

  • Critical International Relations

Taylor & Francis Ltd Critical International Relations

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisCritical approaches to International Relations are now central to both current scholarship and contemporary teaching. Indeed, in the last decade or so, serious work that embraces traditions including, among others, the postcolonial, poststructuralist, psychoanalytic, feminist, deconstructive, genealogical, and interpretive, has moved decisively from the periphery to centre stage. Moreover, Critical International Relations increasingly draws on critical approaches in other disciplines, such as Human Geography, Literary Studies, Performance Studies and the visual arts, as well as Critical Historiography and Critical Legal Studies. To help users navigate and make sense of such an enormous, growingâand ever more complexâcorpus of scholarship, Routledge is pleased to announce this new four-volume collection edited by Jenny Edkins. Critical International Relations answers the need for a one-stop reference resource to enable scholars and students readily to acquaint themselves with key themes and contributions that typify the use of critical approaches to International Relations in diverse temporal and geographical locations.Much more than a historical survey of the field, or a simple assembly of works that may be regarded as âcanonicalâ, the editor has brought together an innovative compilation of materials to reflect the vibrancy and excitement of Critical International Relations. And, in addition to those relatively new to the field who will especially benefit from this enterprise, the collection will also be welcomed by established researchers from across the disciplinary spectrum who are currently engaged in critical work on topics related to International Relations.Volume I sets the scene. The materials gathered here explore how the space for a Critical International Relations was opened by early scholars; the theoretical and philosophical resources on which the field draws; and the methods and methodology it employs. Volumes II and III, meanwhile, bring together the major works by scholars of Critical International Relations, and those from cognate disciplines. The selections exemplify the approach, demonstrate the significance and specificity of Critical International Relations, and show how its assumptions and methods translate in practice into challenging and highly policy-relevant outputs. Finally, Volume IV includes sections on questions of pedagogy, interdisciplinarity, and the responsibility of scholars in relation to the growing dominance of Critical International Relations. The collection is supplemented with a full index, and also includes a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor. It will be appreciated by scholars, students, and researchers as a vital reference and pedagogic resource.

[T]his is an informative book which serves as a useful textbook or background reference for the study of Hong Kong society. * The China Journal *In this very well-written and richly detailed analysis, Chak Kwan Chan offers a convincing argument to explain why Hong Kong's social welfare system has remained highly residual as a result of skillful manipulation by colonial officials on traditional Chinese family values. The author's insightful analysis on the political economy of social welfare makes a significant contribution to the literature on East Asian social policy and social development. It should be widely read in the academic and policy communities. -- James Lee, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University[This] is among a handful of studies that have paid attention to the role of European imperialism in social welfare and should inspire more research into this neglected topic. It also offers important insights of relevance to social security policy in other parts of the world as well. -- James Midgley, University of California, BerkeleyThe book is probably the best I have read about social policy in Hong Kong. Tracing welfare development in Hong Kong, the author discusses the influence of traditional Chinese values on welfare, the interplay between British colonialism and Chinese socialism, and the striving of the local Hong Kong people to develop a system that links up welfare and democracy. -- Nelson Chow, University of Hong KongSocial Security Policy in Hong Kong is undoubtedly the outstanding book on social security and the nature of the welfare system in Hong Kong. Book SynopsisGlobal Multiculturalism offers a rich collection of case studies on ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity drawn from thirteen countrieseach unique in the way it understands, negotiates, and represents its diversity. A multi-disciplinary group of authors shows how, in different nations, identity groups are included, or made invisible by forced assimilation, or reviled even to the point of genocide. Framed within a theoretical discussion of national identity, transnationalism, hybridity, and diaspora, each chapter surveys the demographics and history of its country and then analyzes the dynamics of diversity. • American War Machine

Rowman & Littlefield American War Machine

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewIn Scott's view, the American military-industrial complex so feared by Eisenhower has grown into a military-industrial-corporate behemoth. This 'overclass,' often functioning independently from the official elected government, has spearheaded countless actions that it perceives to be in the best interest of perpetuating American hegemony. With exhaustive research and extremely persuasive arguments, Scott seeks to prove that the funding and motivation behind America's assertion of global supremacy can be traced to drugs. Drug money fueled American actions in Laos and Vietnam during the Cold War, American support of the mujahedeen in Afghanistan in the '80s, and defines American political action in Latin America and present-day Afghanistan. By looking at covert activity and recorded history through the lens of American global dominance, Scott makes a terrifyingly compelling case; he asks readers to consider what actions taken in the last fifty years have not benefited America's military-industrial complex, such an integral part of the global economy. . . . [His] carefully structured arguments never fail to interest or disturb. * Publishers Weekly, Starred Review *Scott has written a provocative account of CIA machinations and their link to spikes in global drug production, war, and terrorism. His chapters on Thailand and the Far East are especially well-grounded and of great use to historians. . . . [Scott] is a creative thinker who deserves credit for delving into the netherworld of clandestine operations and global corruption which most academics choose to ignore. . . . At his core, Scott is an idealist who believes that in exposing the sinister forces accounting for the spread of unnecessary violence, an aroused citizenry can mobilize to rein them in. The stakes today are especially high, because if left unchecked, the pattern of warfare and destabilization which Scott describes may lead to a global confrontation of truly catastrophic proportions as well as irreversible environmental damage and the economic bankruptcy of the United States. * History News Network *There are certain books that, once read, alter one’s mind permanently. This is such a book. Naïve readers and patriots beware: You will never think about the world in the same way after you have read just the first two chapters of American War Machine. * The Erowid Review *American War Machine explains how one of the principal techniques of [commandeering power in the United States by secret, undemocratic means] has been the CIA’s utilization of the drug traffic to combat communism, the governments and movements of the left, and, in our time, to maintain American supremacy in the world. . . . The demonstration is, one could say, stupefying. . . . This book reads like a real thriller filled with twists and suspense; a thriller for which one does not, yet, know the end. But can there be an end? In this world where the honest citizen is overwhelmed by mountains of data, this book must absolutely be read because it allows us to understand to what degree we have been so manipulated and misinformed. . . . [A] solid and convincing document, the mind-blowing reading of which truly leads to original and non-conformist elements of reflection, indispensable for attempting to understand the world which surrounds us, and for trying to discern where it is going. -- Bernard Norlain * Revue Défense Nationale *Peter Dale Scott has published a book of stunning richness. . . . I know of no study that so precisely captures a period as dangerous as our own. . . . Indeed, empires, kingdoms, and republics have their state secrets, but when the entire state becomes a secret, when in so-called democratic nations everything is decided without the people, elections themselves being open to doubt, it is necessary that one escape from the fear of ordinary people in the presence of the powerful and try to understand where these decisions are trending that are contrary to our interest. . . . Peter Dale Scott is the Tocqueville of this era, helping us understand how we are sliding into a world that can only be revolutionary if it wishes to survive. . . . Buy this book, read it, make it known. -- Ariane Walter * Agoravox *What I like most about Peter Dale Scott are his fierce intellectual curiosity, his willingness to investigate radioactive topics, and his tireless commitment to unearthing the truth. Over the years, he has done more than almost anyone to discover and chronicle the forces that covertly shape our policies. American War Machine may be his greatest work yet. -- Russ Baker, award-winning investigative journalist and author of Family of SecretsPeter Dale Scott is our most fearless and illuminating chronicler of the lethal and mysterious web of unaccountable violence linking government to organized crime, the drug trade, state terror, and eventuating in disastrous wars. Read this extraordinary book to understand why this country finds itself gridlocked in Afghanistan, yet another costly quagmire, because a small cabal at the top is still dedicated to the mirage of American global dominance. -- Richard Falk, Albert G. Milbank Professor of International Law Emeritus, Princeton UniversityPeter Dale Scott writes with his inimitable eloquence about the intersection between U.S. covert operations and international narcotics trafficking and its destructive undermining of American democracy. The past half-century of drug politics—and the country’s complicit acceptance of the violence it has spawned—is an ominous portent for our present and future. American War Machine should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the upper- and underworld marriage that drives contemporary foreign policy. -- Sally Denton, author of The Bluegrass ConspiracyPeter Dale Scott flashes a bright light on a dark illicit world of lowly thugs and high-placed political and moneyed cabals. Thoroughly researched and deeply informed, this book makes for an intriguing read. -- Michael Parenti, author of The Face of Imperialism and God and His DemonsI said of Scott's last brilliant take on this subject, Drugs, Oil and War, that 'It makes most academic and journalistic explanations of our past and current interventions read like government propaganda written for children.' Now Scott has written an even better book. Book SynopsisIn the age of terrorism Michael Ignatieff argues that we must not shrink from the use of violence. But its use - in a liberal democracy - must be measured.Trade ReviewIgnatieff is a rarity among modern thinkers and ethicists for his ability to communicate to a wide audience with lucidity, intellectual clarity and power. All these were to the fore in his 2000 analysis Virtual War, focussed on the Balkan conflicts, and they are present to the highest degree in The Lesser Evil ... Profound and powerful and a book that no thinking person should fail to read. Michael Ignatieff has written a sober yet chilling account of the issues facing liberal democracies in the face of modern international terrorism. In a surgical analysis he describes the challenges facing their leaders and citizens. His warning of the critical dangers of under- and over-reaction in combating terrorism could not be more timely. -- Justice Richard Goldstone, Constitutional Court of South Africa The strength of Igniatieff's thoughtful book is that it avoids reflexive answers and ideological certainties and insists on weighing choices carefully with respect to concrete human consequences.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisThis book explores the ethical dimension of peacebuilding. In the aftermath of the Cold War the hope for a more stable and just international order was rapidly dissolved by the internecine conflicts that plagued all continents. The Rwanda and Srebrenica genocides demonstrated the challenge of promoting peace in a world increasingly defined by intra-state conflict and sub-national groups confronting nation-states. Murithi interrogates the role that ethics plays in promoting and consolidating peacebuilding and presents a synthesis of moral philosophy and international relations and an analysis of the ethics of negotiation, mediation, forgiveness and reconciliation. In its attempt to explore the extent to which ethical concerns influence and inform peacebuilding this book contributes to a growing body of literature on ethics and international relations which will enable students, scholars and practitioners to ground their understanding of a principled peacebuilding.Table of ContentsPreface; 1. Book SynopsisThis book represents the first comprehensive overview of the US-Iraqi relationship since 1979 and the first attempt to place the 2003 American invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq in that wider historical context. Using a modified version of World Systems Theory, the book places American policy toward Iraq at the centre of a number of dynamics, including America''s dominant role in managing the world capitalist system, the fundamental importance of Persian Gulf oil to that system, and long-term change in the American political system. It argues that American policy towards Iraq since 1979 has been shaped above all by the importance of Persian Gulf oil to the world economy and the consequent need to restore America''s position as regional hegemon and guarantor of the global oil supply, which had been destabilized by the Iranian revolution. It also emphasizes the role of American domestic politics and above all the ''conservative ascendancy'' which brought George W. Bush to the presidency, as a critical factor in explaining the 2003 invasion of Iraq.Trade ReviewSteven Hurst has written a first-rate and very readable book. He shows how these relations followed a very different pattern to the high-level discussions concerning the economic shape of the post-war world that were going on at the same time. In this way, he highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of the broader process of Anglo-American economic diplomacy. Based on extensive archival research and a thorough knowledge of the secondary literature, this is a major addition to the study of Anglo-American relations in the 20th century.

Subsequent chapters explain the diverse forms that military government within occupation regimes take on and the role of civilian governors and agencies within occupation regimes; the significance of military occupation for our understanding of political obligation; the concept of sovereignty; the nature and meaning of justice; and our evaluation of regime transformation under conditions of military occupation.Table of ContentsIntroduction; 1. • The Foreign Policy of Lyndon B. Johnson

Edinburgh University Press The Foreign Policy of Lyndon B. Johnson

Book SynopsisA balanced overview of Johnson''s policies across a range of theatres and issues. Lyndon B. Johnson''s presidency was characterised by domestic successes and vilified interational policies. He presided over the advancement of civil rights and educational reform while escalating the disastrous war in Vietnam. Drawing on recently declassified documents and the latest research, this fresh account looks at Vietnam and beyond to Johnson''s relations with Europe, NATO and the rest of the world. Colman contends that, although the war in Vietnam could have been prosecuted more effectively, overall Johnson dealt with the world beyond the borders of the United States very capably. In particular, he dealt with successive challenges to the NATO alliance in a skilled and intelligent manner, leaving it politically stronger when he left office in 1969 than it had been in 1963.

  • Sovereignty After Empire

Book SynopsisHow does empire affect the route to successor sovereign state systems and the features of the sovereignty of these systems? This unique systematic comparison of empires and of their consequences for sovereignty in the Middle East and Central Asia brings theory on empire and sovereignty to bear on empirical variation across the two regions. The novel approach to understanding the political structures of states in two significant areas of the non-European world offers an important comparative discussion of post-imperial development and sovereignty. It raises a clear set of research questions about variations of imperial practice and puts forward an attractive and persuasive case that imperial legacy has been an important variable in the post-independence period.Table of Contents1. • Ethics and Politics After Poststructuralism

Edinburgh University Press Ethics and Politics After Poststructuralism

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis groundbreaking book offers a fresh and innovative perspective on ethics and politics after poststructuralism. Madeleine Fagan argues that the ethical should not be understood as a label; it does not mean good or right, and is not an evaluation or guide. Rather, both the ethical and the political are descriptions of the context in which we find ourselves. Fagan offers an account of the inseparability of ethics and politics that challenges existing accounts of poststructuralist ethics and shows the need for a practice-based rethinking of the ethico-political. Drawing on the work of Emmanuel Levinas, Jacques Derrida and Jean-Luc Nancy, Ethics and Politics after Poststructuralism puts forward a radical and far-reaching critique of both foundational and non-foundational ethical theory.
